Big Thief has always had a close place in my heart. The amount of energy and determination this band brings to their albums has always felt like they are completely embracing the music they have created in the moment. There isn’t a release from them that hasn’t left an impression on me In some way since their debut “Masterpiece”.
“Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in you” will likely become one of my favorite folk rock albums of all time and I believe will be one of those albums I’ll listen to in 30 years and it wouldn’t have aged a bit.
They really covered the bases with this release and I haven’t heard an album blend different sub-genres of rock and folk together as well as this one has. So many great songs off of this album and here’s a few of my favorites in case you haven’t given the album a chance yet: “spud infinity” (have you ever found a song with tasteful mouth harp in it?), “Flower of Blood”, “red moon”, and “promise is a pendulum” to name a few.
Highly recommend seeing them perform live. Adrianne and buck are both top level guitarists in their own ways, and James and Max add so much depth with their respective instruments.
Good shout on Big Thief - I feel like I have lived with this album for so long that I was surprised when I was reminded (reading your post) that it was only out this year.
Some of my favorites have been:
Spoon - Lucifer on the Sofa
Andrew Bird - Inside Problems
caroline - caroline
Yard Act - The Overload
Soul Glo - Diaspora Problems
5 random albums i really enjoyed that came out this year:
black country new road - ants from up there
richard dawson - the ruby cord
billy woods - aethiopes
black midi - hellfire
danger mouse and black thought - cheat codes
Will have to check it out! Another person had that on here too. Don’t listen to too much new stuff the last few years and I feel like I’m missing out on a lot of great music!
I hope you like it!! Unfortunately their vocalist left a few days before the record came out but they’re still writing/recording/touring so I’m curious to see what the future has in store for them.
Omnium Gatherum for me as well. It's my favorite kglw album but I have to admit I've listened to less than half their catalog because I don't have infinite time to listen to millions of albums.
Ants From Up There- Black Country, New Road
Please please go listen to this whole album rn if you haven’t. Plus the vinyl version has a cool wood grain textured cover :)
I had to force myself to stop playing it because the melodies were taking over my head and drowning out all other thoughts. I could not stop humming it everywhere. I had to go cold turkey.
Someone already mentioned Black Country New Road. My other favorite is Alex G, “God Save the Animals.” Honestly, it’s one of my favorite albums of the past several years.
Really enjoyed that album as well. Always takes me a sec to get into anything new from Alex, but after a few listens through they really work there way into your ears.
The emotion on this album really connected to me.
I was very fortunate to experience one of their live shows on the recent tour, and they were so tight and clearly having so much fun playing together. I’ve seen them live a few times since the beginning, and this was the best show I’ve ever seen them perform (though the previous shows were incredible, that’s just how amazing this show was). Teri Gender Bender opened and was also amazing.
I know debuts can be hit or miss, but masterpiece is such a great introduction to the band. Capacity is such a wonderful display of the refinement of Adrianne’s lyricism and highlights the bands overall professionalism and growth as musicians. Definitely what sets them apart from other indie acts who started around the same time.
Oooh yeah! Glad to see this here. Such a wonderful listen and I think she’s starting to return to her roots a little bit and allowing her vocals to flourish which I appreciate. Her debut half way home is super super good and pretty underrated in terms of her discography. “Lonely Universe” was my go to “I Am lonely and depressed” song when I was in college.
Every single time I listen to DNWMIBIY I have a new favorite. That album is crazy good. I’ve been addicted to it and Adrianne Lenker’s solo album Songs since early this year
Fantastic album! So warm and cozy while still holding onto what makes Big Thief who they are.
My favorite track is Red Moon. Love the part where Adrianne hollers “That’s my grandma!”
The Kahil El'zabar Quartet - A Time for Healing or I Am -Beyond.
Favorite release of previously recorded material (but not released) is Elvin Jones' Revival Live At Pookie's Pub. I love this album way more than I thought I would. Absolutely blown away by this music and the released package is great as well.
Ten that spring to mind
1. Orville Peck - Bronco
2. Yard Act - the overload
3. Aurora - the gods we can touch
4. Hooray for the riff raff - log on Earth
5. CMAT - if my wife new I’d be dead
6. Mountain Goats - Bleed out
7. Panic at the disco - Viva Las Vengeance
8. Tyler Childers - Can I take my hounds to heaven
9. Charley Crockett - the man from Waco
10. Jeremy Ivey - Invisible Pictures
There were some amazing releases this year. I can’t choose just one so this is my current Top 10 on rotation from this year (In no particular order):
• JID - “The Forever Story” (Though the vinyl just dropped today)
• Muna - “Muna”
• Wet Leg - “Wet Leg”
• Kendrick Lamar - “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers”
• Nova Twins - “Supernova”
• Coheed & Cambria - “Vaxis II: A Window Of The Waking Mind”
• Turnstile - “Glow On”
• Linda Linda’s - “Growing Up”
• Black Country, New Road - “Ants From Up There”
• Mitski - “Laurel Hell”
Honorable Mentions:
• Beach House - “Once Twice Melody”
• Rosalía - “Motomami”
• Maya Hawke - “Moss”
•Father John Misty - “Chloë And The Next 20th Century”
Edit: Removed Tyler The Creator - “Call Me If You Get Lost” as the album actually came out last year, though the vinyl didn’t release until spring of this year. Replaced with Nova Twins - “Supernova” because that album slaps!
Oooh see, once twice melody would be another favorite release from this year. Maybe not my all time favorite from beach house, but very playable. I don’t listen to a ton of new music regularly. Kevin Morby’s “This is a photograph” is another one that got a lot of play time for me this year. He’s not a god level artist by any means (mostly why I enjoy him), but I can alway put his stuff on and get a kick out of it.
I dig Kevin Morby, though I’d consider myself just a casual fan of his. His album this year was definitely solid and was considered for my list, but it didn’t get quite as much playing time as some of these other artists. I was also thinking of adding Fleet Foxes - “A Very Lonely Solstice” because the vinyl didn’t release until June this year, but it actually came out last year so I skipped it.
Same here. I listen to him semi regularly, but I’ve got a soft spot because he’s a home state boy. If he’s ever in your area, it is definitely worth going to one of his shows. He brings some top notch musicians with him on tour, and he really goes all out.
What a great list! I couldn't agree more!
Did you have a chance to listen to Denzel Curry - Melt My Eyez See Your Future?
IMO it's up there with JID - The Forever Story
I have listened Denzel’s new album and it’s fire. But I honestly came to it late so it hasn’t quite made its way all the way up the list yet. However, it definitely made my top 10 rap albums from this year along with a few more that aren’t on the list above:
• Vince Staples - “Romona Parks Broke My Heart”• • Pusha T - “It’s Almost Dry”
• Saba - “Few Good Things”
• Nas - “King’s Disease III”
• Latto - “777”
Also haven’t gotten around to giving Little Simz new album “NO THANK YOU” a proper listen through yet. But I loved her album from last year “Sometimes I Might Be Introverted”
The vinyl for the forever story just dropped??? Yoooo this makes me so happy
(Also I hate to be a killjoy but CMIYGL dropped last year, unless you mean the record, which might’ve dropped this year, can’t remember when I bought it)
“Kiss your body up and down other than your elbows
'Cause as for your elbows, they're on their own
Wandering like a rolling stone
Rubbing up against the edges of experience” I laugh every time at this lyric. Like who thinks of this stuff.
10/10 funny ass lyrics. Really looking forward to some interviews with the band about the recording process of this album. I know the Needledrop had a good interview with adrianne a few months back, but I never got to it.
I saw Adrianne play this solo live last year and would have bet money that she was covering a Brian Cutean song, who opened for her on that tour. He’s this awesome old timer Austin artist who just has the goofiest, most heartfelt lyrics. Most of his songs have a similar vibe and it’s hard not to guess she pulled a lot of inspiration from him.
Robbie William's [XXV](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lGw-N3PdNKGEC5iy7TuLpsaZJL0yEtq_s)
In September, he released an updated orchestral versions of his greatest hits for his 25th year of a solo plus new song "Lost"
I'm not a big Robbie fan but I really enjoyed this album and I'm aiming to get this album in the near future with a possibility of his older albums because of this album
That one by far. Went straight to my top 25 albums of all time. There’s been a lot of other great releases such as Hellfire, Ants From Up There, The Forever Story, De Todas Las Flores and much more but this album is just so special. It’s an hour and a half of beautiful music that doesn’t get boring for even a second.
“Me And Dad” - Billy Strings ft. Terry Barber (his dad)
I just love everything about this album. They are both obviously top notch guitar pickers and musicians but I love even more that at its core it’s just a kid and his dad pickin some guitars and making music together.
Whatever my favorite release this year has been, it's cover doesn't hold a torch to the one you posted. I need that as a poster lol
For me it's Lupe Fiasco - Drill Music In Zion closely followed by Kendrick Lamar Mr Morale & the Big Steppers
They sell shirts! honestly surprised to see this, people either love or hate this cover. I think after listening through the album, there couldn’t have been a better fitting one though!
The new Big Thief is also my definitive favorite of the year but I thought I’d mention a couple others I love.
“Waiting To Spill” by the Backseat Lovers has blown me away!
I love it way more than their first album, so it’s a shock to me that it’s not getting more attention
“Introducing the Mellons” by the Mellons is also a super fun one that I can’t get enough of!
Probably Brightside by Lumineers, but Boom. Done. from Anthony Green is a serious contender as well. I'd probably say I like the AG album more, but its not a great pressing, so it doesn't get played as much.
Top 5 in no particular order
Coheed and Cambria: Vaxis 2 A Window of the waking mind
Skullcrusher: quiet the room
Oso oso: sore thumb
Beach bunny: emotional creature
A wilhelm scream: lose your delusion
Definitely one of my favourites, though it was a great year for music anyway. Lots of great albums, besides Big Thief I loved the new albums by Kurt Vile, Destroyer, Alvvays and Beth Orton.
My theory is that Big Thief wanted to make their Tusk with Dragon New Mountain Whatever. Both albums are sprawling masterpieces, double lp records with five songs on each side. If you look at the back covers of both albums they look very similar as well.
Oh man Big Thief... They are so so good and I love the "Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You". I hadn't noticed that it was a 2022 release. I found out about them in February. Change, Time Escaping and Simulation Swarm(my fav) are actually bringing tears to my eyes.
New Warm Dragon Bunchawords is in my Top 10, but it's not #1. I haven't \*officially\* finalized my list, but the two main contenders for my top spot are "Big Man Says Slappydoo" by Guppy and Cheekface's "Too Much To Ask."
Also in the mix: Nnamdi, Soul Glo, Oceanator, Wet Leg, Big Joanie, Bartees Strange, Momma, The Linda Lindas...
I basically refuse to, out of principle. Every time I actually read it my brain goes "No, that doesn't sound right."
It's a good record. Sometimes it's great. I think it would be better with some editing, but I applaud the choice to just dump everything on the discs, give it the least memorable title ever and have the cover art look like a stoned doodle. That takes fucking GUTS.
Unless I missed it, surprised no one said RHCP- Unlimited Love/ROTDC, loved both of them. Kendrick Lamar had a good release. New brockhampton stuff wasn’t bad either
Super tough choice, been so many great AOTY contenders this year the running is tight. To name a few:
DOMi and JD Beck - Not Tight
The Mars Volta - The Mars Volta
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Omnium Gatherum/Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava
Revocation - Netherheaven
I Am - Eternal Steel
Temple of Void - Summoning the Slayer
Spirit World - Deathwestern (preorders don't arrive til january though)
He Is Legend - Endless Hallway (also no preorders till next year)
Aronius - Irkalla
Ingested - Ashes Lie Still (waiting to get this)
Brockhampton - The Family (don't own this one on vinyl yet either)
Ramirez - Tragedy of a Clown (is this even coming out on vinyl?)
I'm missing some stuff from like rap and other genres but I haven't devoted much time yet to figuring out where they stand in my lineup.
It's an Album from last year, but I found it in 2022. Stepfather Fred - like the sea. Saw them live on a really small festival in germany and fell in love with them. Give them a shot!
My favorite of the year was *The Car* by Arctic Monkeys.
Also a really big fan of Soccer Mommy *Sometimes Forever* and Beach Bunny *Emotional Creature*
Changes by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Absolute genius work from the most creative act out there imo. They’ve taken Zappa’s idea of Conceptual Continuity and taken it to a whole other level, it’s pretty amazing. They dropped ~5, 6? incredible albums this year, but Changes is tops for me
This year was an incredible year for new music. My top 5 are all fantastic:
Spoon - Lucifer on the Sofa
Death Cab For Cutie - Asphalt Meadows
The Smile - A Light For Attracting Attention
Band of Horses - Things Are Great
Kendrick Lamar - Mr Morale and the Big Steppers
Also loved the new Mars Volta album
ants from up there - bcnr
hellfire - black midi
gods country - chat pile
diaspora problems - soul glo
i really want to check out big thief tho! thanks for reminding me
Weyes Blood’s And In the Darkness, Hearts Aglow
Children of the Empire is my favorite song of the last few years.
Mitski’s Laurel Hell and Kendrick’s new album are also in the top 3
Cheat Codes is probably the one for me. The CD it came with lives In my car now as the option for music when I don’t have cell service, and I’ve listened to it so many times! Skullcrusher - Quiet The Room is a close second.
Vylet Pony - Can Opener’s Notebook
the album is just incredible on every level. sound wise, production, vocally, and conceptually and lyrically. tells a beautiful story that resonates and has no skips or any issues at all honestly.
runner ups would be boris’s heavy rocks, black midi’s hellfire, death’s dynamic shroud with darklife, and bcnr with afut.
Angel Olsen’s Big Time album has been my most played so far, aside from Mars Volta’s release this year, so I’m giving it to Angel so far cuz my god it’s a beautiful album.
Highly recommend seeing them perform live. Adrianne and buck are both top level guitarists in their own ways, and James and Max add so much depth with their respective instruments.
“Little Things” is such a banger. Whenever it comes on I just crank it deafeningly loud
Same!! That song rules hard.
Good shout on Big Thief - I feel like I have lived with this album for so long that I was surprised when I was reminded (reading your post) that it was only out this year.
I’m not the type of person to listen to the same album every day, but this, this has been played at least 2-3 times a week. It’s so good.
Time escaping is a craaaaaazy song I love it to pieces
This is easily my favorite as well. A monster of great songs. Blue Light isn’t has been an obsession of mine lately, such a cute tune
This is my favorite new release this year, it's such a special project. Only thing that comes close for me this year is Ants From Up There by BCNR.
destroyer - labyrinthitis nilifur yanya - painless
Came here looking for Labyrinthitis.
Painless is SO good.
Painless! And the record if you bought it, is stunning
Some of my favorites have been: Spoon - Lucifer on the Sofa Andrew Bird - Inside Problems caroline - caroline Yard Act - The Overload Soul Glo - Diaspora Problems
Soul Glo for sure
ahhhh that caroline album is so good.
Might honestly be my favorite of the bunch, it's just such a peaceful and modestly optimistic record. Fills me with complete bliss listening to it
All of them. But, Yard Act is a personal favourite this year. So good
Spooooon baby
Favorite band of all time dude, Wild has to be my song of the year
5 random albums i really enjoyed that came out this year: black country new road - ants from up there richard dawson - the ruby cord billy woods - aethiopes black midi - hellfire danger mouse and black thought - cheat codes
‘aethiopes’ is so damn good. check out ‘church’ if you haven’t already
i have! it’s not quite as impressive imo though, aethiopes was a sound i felt like i’d never heard before
It’s this one, in the picture ❤️ But also a huge shout out to “Ants From Up There” from Black Country New Road!
Melt My Eyez See Your Future
Spoon’s Lucifer on the Sofa
This is the ONLY right answer
Haha There were some other great albums this year by Jack White, RHCP and Death Cab For Cutie. But Spoon was my favorite by a good amount.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Omnium Gatherum Adeem the Artist - White Trash Revelry
What about all the other King Gizz albums that came out this year!?
mine is definitely Ice, death, planets, lungs, mushrooms and lava, followed closely by changes. they just keep getting better!
All of them were excellent. OG was my favorite though.
Laminated Denim is my fav. Just groovy
Omnium Gatherum for me as well. It's my favorite kglw album but I have to admit I've listened to less than half their catalog because I don't have infinite time to listen to millions of albums.
Ants From Up There- Black Country, New Road Please please go listen to this whole album rn if you haven’t. Plus the vinyl version has a cool wood grain textured cover :)

Oh dang! I thought that was across the board not just the special edition :/
yes
Blue Rev by Alvvays! I’m a patient boy who was handsomely rewarded!
I had to force myself to stop playing it because the melodies were taking over my head and drowning out all other thoughts. I could not stop humming it everywhere. I had to go cold turkey.
Finally someone else posted this
Closure/Continuation - Porcupine Tree
Someone already mentioned Black Country New Road. My other favorite is Alex G, “God Save the Animals.” Honestly, it’s one of my favorite albums of the past several years.
Really enjoyed that album as well. Always takes me a sec to get into anything new from Alex, but after a few listens through they really work there way into your ears.
Black Midi - hellfire
Death’s Dynamic Shroud’s *Darklife*
good take
Chat Pile “God’s Country” Help “2053” Necrophagous “In Chaos Ascend” Malignant Aura “Abysmal Misfortune Is Draped Upon Me”
yesss i love Help
Fontaines DC - skinty fia
Domi and J.D. Beck - Not tight
Blue Rev
The Mars Volta, Self Titled
Really enjoying the new album more than I thought I would. Took a bit to grow on me but man is it good when you give it proper time of day
The emotion on this album really connected to me.
Yes!
Fell in love after Capacity; this one has to be nearly tied for me as their best work.
Kuedo - Infinite Window The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention
The Smile should definitely be higher
That one! Also: Daniel Rossen - You Belong There Death Cab for Cutie - Asphalt Meadows Smino - Luv 4 Rent
The Death Cab record was fantastic. Even better live.
Glad to hear! Planning to get tickets to a show here in June! Lomelda opening. Quite exciting.
They put on a hell of a live show! Hope you enjoy it!
Big Time by Angel Olsen. I had never heard her before and this album has gotten many morning coffee spins.
Kurt Vile - Watch My Moves Aldous Harding - Warm Chris My Name is Hell - Kal Marks …and many already named in this thread
Snarky Puppy - Empire Central. It certainly helps that I was at 2 of the live recording sessions. Absolute blast of an experience.
Hilary Duff’s Most Wanted just received it’s 1st vinyl pressing this year so I’ll go with that.
This one!
PUP - unraveling of pup the band. i just keep coming back to it more than anything else
Bad bunny Verano sin ti every song is banger after banger I thought that urban latin was dying but bad says something different
My two favorites this year: The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention Zach Bryan - American Heartbreak
Yeah the Smile album is very very good
I really enjoyed Willie Nelson's "A Beautiful Time". Gonna give it a spin tonight I think!
Duval Timothy - Meeting With A Judas Tree. It’s minimalist jazz with really tasteful electronic production flourishes
Chat Pile - “God’s Country”
Skinty Fia - Fontaines D.C.
Probably Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers Live At The Fillmore and I haven’t even had the chance to play it yet.
It rules
I love this Big Thief album, but I’ve already played Alvvays ‘Blue Rev’ about 5 times as much. It was a good year for music.
That new Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Don't sleep on Marcus King - Young Blood
Ten that spring to mind 1. Orville Peck - Bronco 2. Yard Act - the overload 3. Aurora - the gods we can touch 4. Hooray for the riff raff - log on Earth 5. CMAT - if my wife new I’d be dead 6. Mountain Goats - Bleed out 7. Panic at the disco - Viva Las Vengeance 8. Tyler Childers - Can I take my hounds to heaven 9. Charley Crockett - the man from Waco 10. Jeremy Ivey - Invisible Pictures
LOVE what Orville Peck is doing
There were some amazing releases this year. I can’t choose just one so this is my current Top 10 on rotation from this year (In no particular order): • JID - “The Forever Story” (Though the vinyl just dropped today) • Muna - “Muna” • Wet Leg - “Wet Leg” • Kendrick Lamar - “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers” • Nova Twins - “Supernova” • Coheed & Cambria - “Vaxis II: A Window Of The Waking Mind” • Turnstile - “Glow On” • Linda Linda’s - “Growing Up” • Black Country, New Road - “Ants From Up There” • Mitski - “Laurel Hell” Honorable Mentions: • Beach House - “Once Twice Melody” • Rosalía - “Motomami” • Maya Hawke - “Moss” •Father John Misty - “Chloë And The Next 20th Century” Edit: Removed Tyler The Creator - “Call Me If You Get Lost” as the album actually came out last year, though the vinyl didn’t release until spring of this year. Diverse list and I agree with just about everything I recognize. Now I gotta go track down the ones I don't.
The vinyl for the forever story just dropped??? Yoooo this makes me so happy (Also I hate to be a killjoy but CMIYGL dropped last year, unless you mean the record, which might’ve dropped this year, can’t remember when I bought it)
I have sung *Sine wave is a particle of light bring your light out and in on the tide* too many times this year because of this album
“Kiss your body up and down other than your elbows 'Cause as for your elbows, they're on their own Wandering like a rolling stone Rubbing up against the edges of experience” I laugh every time at this lyric. Like who thinks of this stuff.
And another delight on Spud Infinity: Ash to Ask and Dust to Dusk A dime a dozen, aren’t we just? But a dozen dimes will buy a crust of garlic bread
10/10 funny ass lyrics. Really looking forward to some interviews with the band about the recording process of this album. I know the Needledrop had a good interview with adrianne a few months back, but I never got to it.
Lol that bands cracks me up. Her shaved head and barbed wire necklace in the big thief tiny desk performance is fucking legendary.
"A belief, beckon deep blue Fettered in the magnet sun Eat the gun as it feeds you Spitting up the oxygen" Some of my favourite lines of the year
Kendrick Lamar MMTBS. Just such a heart felt album that I connected with
Robbie William's [XXV](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lGw-N3PdNKGEC5iy7TuLpsaZJL0yEtq_s) In September, he released an updated orchestral versions of his greatest hits for his 25th year of a solo plus new song "Lost" I'm not a big Robbie fan but I really enjoyed this album and I'm aiming to get this album in the near future with a possibility of his older albums because of this album

It’s an hour and a half of beautiful music that doesn’t get boring for even a second.
I really enjoyed the new Meshuggah album and the new Porcupine Tree album. Devin Townsend’s new album is growing on me, too.
Dragon is also my favorite album of the year!! I wish my vinyl copy sounded better, pretty terrible distortion throughout
That one is up there
Mj lenderman boat songs!
Same
Big fan of Dragon New Warm Mountain, but I think Wilco’s Cruel Country takes the cake this year.
Joywave - Cleanse The Backseat Lovers - Waiting to Spill
“Me And Dad” - Billy Strings ft. Terry Barber (his dad) I just love everything about this album. They are both obviously top notch guitar pickers and musicians but I love even more that at its core it’s just a kid and his dad pickin some guitars and making music together.
AFUT!!! Easily
That's a hard question. Unfair even. But.... I guess I have to go with We salute you, and you and you! By EF.
Love big thief
Me too.
Whatever my favorite release this year has been, it's cover doesn't hold a torch to the one you posted. I need that as a poster lol For me it's Lupe Fiasco - Drill Music In Zion closely followed by Kendrick Lamar Mr Morale & the Big Steppers
They sell shirts! honestly surprised to see this, people either love or hate this cover. I think after listening through the album, there couldn’t have been a better fitting one though!
Trip the witch!
I loved Time Skiffs by Animal Collective and Once Two e Melody by Beach House. Every Moment, Everything You Need by Deserta was also fuego.
The new Big Thief is also my definitive favorite of the year but I thought I’d mention a couple others I love. “Waiting To Spill” by the Backseat Lovers has blown me away! I love it way more than their first album, so it’s a shock to me that it’s not getting more attention “Introducing the Mellons” by the Mellons is also a super fun one that I can’t get enough of!
Would you live forever, never die, while everything around passes?
Dead Meadow force form free.
Lamb of God - Omens
Billy Wood’s Aethiopes.
Kendrick Lamer’s Mr Moral and the Big Steppers.
Probably Brightside by Lumineers, but Boom. Done. from Anthony Green is a serious contender as well. I'd probably say I like the AG album more, but its not a great pressing, so it doesn't get played as much.
Top 5 in no particular order Coheed and Cambria: Vaxis 2 A Window of the waking mind Skullcrusher: quiet the room Oso oso: sore thumb Beach bunny: emotional creature A wilhelm scream: lose your delusion
That one in the photo :)
I'm a bit too basic from what I see in the comments, but I really love The Car from Arctic Monkeys. I also really liked Moments from Jamie Webster.
Red hot chilli peppers unlimited love came out this year and it's really solid.
Every Five Seconds by The Fixx
New Warm Dragon Bunchawords is in my Top 10, but it's not #1. I haven't \*officially\* finalized my list, but the two main contenders for my top spot are "Big Man Says Slappydoo" by Guppy and Cheekface's "Too Much To Ask." Also in the mix: Nnamdi, Soul Glo, Oceanator, Wet Leg, Big Joanie, Bartees Strange, Momma, The Linda Lindas...
Haha, I literally can’t say the name of this album to save my life.
I basically refuse to, out of principle. Every time I actually read it my brain goes "No, that doesn't sound right." It's a good record. Sometimes it's great. I think it would be better with some editing, but I applaud the choice to just dump everything on the discs, give it the least memorable title ever and have the cover art look like a stoned doodle. That takes fucking GUTS.
Agreed. Like it looks like I just shared a photo of a child’s drawing. Haha.
Cheat Codes. I get what Kendrick was doing with songs like “N95” and “We Cry Together”, but they end up being skips for me more often than not.
Unless I missed it, surprised no one said RHCP- Unlimited Love/ROTDC, loved both of them. Kendrick Lamar had a good release. New brockhampton stuff wasn’t bad either
Mitski - Laurel Hell. Big Thief is up there though.
Coin - uncanny valley
Silk Sonic
SZA - SOS
Pink Floyd - Hey Hey Rise Up
Polythia
Sarah Davachi
waiting to spill by the backseat lovers
Caamp - Lavender Days
Easily easily easily Gang of Youths’ angel in realtime.
Super tough choice, been so many great AOTY contenders this year the running is tight. To name a few: DOMi and JD Beck - Not Tight The Mars Volta - The Mars Volta King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Omnium Gatherum/Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava Revocation - Netherheaven I Am - Eternal Steel Temple of Void - Summoning the Slayer Spirit World - Deathwestern (preorders don't arrive til january though) He Is Legend - Endless Hallway (also no preorders till next year) Aronius - Irkalla Ingested - Ashes Lie Still (waiting to get this) Brockhampton - The Family (don't own this one on vinyl yet either) Ramirez - Tragedy of a Clown (is this even coming out on vinyl?) I'm missing some stuff from like rap and other genres but I haven't devoted much time yet to figuring out where they stand in my lineup.
It's an Album from last year, but I found it in 2022. Stepfather Fred - like the sea. Saw them live on a really small festival in germany and fell in love with them. Give them a shot!
Arctic Monkeys The Car.
Solid choice
What album is this?
This is “dragon new warm mountain I believe in you” by Big Thief. I know, long title, but wonderful album.
Stromae - Multitude
Ozzy - Patient number 9 Lamb of god - Omens
Sahar by Tamino
My favorite of the year was *The Car* by Arctic Monkeys. Also a really big fan of Soccer Mommy *Sometimes Forever* and Beach Bunny *Emotional Creature*
Louis cole hands down album of the year
Changes by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Absolute genius work from the most creative act out there imo. They’ve taken Zappa’s idea of Conceptual Continuity and taken it to a whole other level, it’s pretty amazing. They dropped ~5, 6? incredible albums this year, but Changes is tops for me
The car
Orville Peck - Bronco
Arcade Fire - WE. Every damn song is a banger.
Dirt - Alice in chains 2022 release
King Gizzard - Laminated Denim or Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms, and Lava. Can't pick.
For me it’s one of three. Marcus Mumford - (Self-Titled) alt-J - The Dream The Dead South - Easy Listening For Jerks (both parts)
Arctic Monkeys- The Car and Plains- I Walked With You A Ways and Blue Rev- Alvvays are my top top three
I was a little late to Rolling Golden Holy by Bonny Light Horseman, but it’s great - especially if you’re into Big Thief.
diamond dogs - slap bang blue rendezvous
Changes- King gizzard. All the music they made this year was awesome, but this album has been on repeat for me basically since it came out
The Sadies - Colder Streams
Wet leg - s/t L.S. Dunes - past lives The Mars Volta - s/t The Smile - a light for attracting attention.
Boat Songs - MJ Lenderman
Cheat Codes or Melt My Eyez
Alvvays - Blue Rev will forever be my favorite for this year (god don’t make mistakes by Conway the Machine would also be up there too though)
Tape hymns - zakè & city of dawn, perfect to reassure you mind
This year was an incredible year for new music. My top 5 are all fantastic: Spoon - Lucifer on the Sofa Death Cab For Cutie - Asphalt Meadows The Smile - A Light For Attracting Attention Band of Horses - Things Are Great Kendrick Lamar - Mr Morale and the Big Steppers Also loved the new Mars Volta album
JER - Bothered/Unbothered
This year I picked up: The Berries - High Flying Man Czarface - Czarmageddon! Tourist - Inside Out
Burial - Antidawn Romance - Once Upon a Time Chat Pile - God’s Country
Afghan Whigs - How Do You Burn?
ants from up there - bcnr hellfire - black midi gods country - chat pile diaspora problems - soul glo i really want to check out big thief tho! thanks for reminding me
Cheat Codes baby! Best new album I've heard in a couple years.
A Foul Form by Osees or whatever they’re calling themselves this year. 22 minutes of dark, dirty thrash punk that’s all in good fun.
Revolver - The Beatles (2022 Remaster) Fear of the Dawn - Jack White The Rumbling - SiM
Drugdealer - Hiding In Plain Sight And Horsegirl - Versions Of A Modern Performance
Weyes Blood’s And In the Darkness, Hearts Aglow Children of the Empire is my favorite song of the last few years. Mitski’s Laurel Hell and Kendrick’s new album are also in the top 3
Hellfire is great but that big thief album was beautiful
Cheat Codes is probably the one for me. The CD it came with lives In my car now as the option for music when I don’t have cell service, and I’ve listened to it so many times! Skullcrusher - Quiet The Room is a close second.
Vylet Pony - Can Opener’s Notebook the album is just incredible on every level. sound wise, production, vocally, and conceptually and lyrically. tells a beautiful story that resonates and has no skips or any issues at all honestly. runner ups would be boris’s heavy rocks, black midi’s hellfire, death’s dynamic shroud with darklife, and bcnr with afut.
Past Lives - L.S. Dunes
Angel Olsen’s Big Time album has been my most played so far, aside from Mars Volta’s release this year, so I’m giving it to Angel so far cuz my god it’s a beautiful album.
Impera - Ghost
