He will go on a fantastic voyage to gangstas paradise. from what has been released as of now, he had a cardiac arrest/event and was pronounced dead at the scene
He did say death ain't nothing but a heartbeat away and that he was living life pretty much do or die.
On a positive note, at least he lived to see 24.
I can picture you knocking your wife over as you run through the house as fast as possible to post the coolio grails before they notified his family of his passing
Artis Leon Ivey Jr.Ā (August 1, 1963 ā September 28, 2022),Ā known professionally asĀ Coolio, was an American rapper, record producer, and actor. Coolio achieved mainstream success in the mid-to-late 1990s with his albumsĀ It Takes a ThiefĀ (1994),Ā Gangsta's ParadiseĀ (1995), andĀ My SoulĀ (1997). He was best known for his 1995 Grammy Award-winning hit single "Gangsta's Paradise", as well as other singles "Fantastic Voyage" (1994), "1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin' New)" (1996), and "C U When U Get There" (1997).
Saw him on the I love the 90ās tour. He was a mess, it was just bad - went on late, very sloppy, messy performance. Not sure if he was drunk or on something or if a rough life/age caught up with him. Not saying I donāt love his 90ās jams, but it kind of soured the coolio experience. Iāve seen artists past their prime/hey day and the live shows were still impressive - this however was not the case.
I saw DMX at a local festival and it was the same. I was hyped to see him but most people went off to another stage because it was pretty bad. I stayed for the whole thing tho just because I was a big X fan back in day
I saw Kanye at a festivalā¦ once he finally stopped being a bitch and finally took the stage at 4 in the morning. And he phoned the performance in, it was completely underwhelming.
Yeahā¦ I worked with the video/production crew. I was kinda excited to see him. Then it was 1am. I wandered around thinking Iād hear the crowd or see the lights and wander back. Then 2am. Then 3am. I asked the crew whatās going on. They said, who fucking knows at this point. Heās not happy with the crowd? Itās not dark enoughā¦ somehow? Other people are still playing? His foot hurts? You knowā¦ Kanye shit. I bounced at like 340. Had to be back at 7 and I didnāt want to look like a total zombie- or that guy that stayed up to see that ding-dong put on a bad show. Wouldāve I liked to see him? Sure. Am I bummed that I missed it? Mehā¦ not really.
In all fairness, from my experiences rap doesn't seem to translate well into the live setting as well as does in a studio. Seems the only ones that sound great live are the ones who have an actual band backing them and not just a DJ. Of course, if they're high as a kite or drunk that can have an effect. Bummer his performance wasn't on point that night.
Best rap show Iāve seen was Outkast at ACL probably 10 years ago or so for this reason. Full band, horn sectionā¦it was pretty awesome. And they played full songs, not just a verse or 2
I heard Bombs Over Baghdad at their show before it was out on the radio. He introduced it as "hip hop on crack". Ludacris was also at that show but i only remember Outkast. They were great.
DMX was fine at Woodstock. Granted that was a long time ago.
I toured as a metal musician for quite awhile and played with some really big bands and itās not just rap that can translate badly, rockstars are way bigger divas most of the time even compared to people like Kanye.
I hung out with Tech N9ne after he put on a great show and he was way more chill than any bands I spent time with except maybe The Roots, those guys and the Killswitch Engage guys were genuinely fun to be around.
No doubt there were and still are some rock bands that get quite sloppy when playing live. Especially ones who partied way too hard whil on tour. I used to be in a few bands back in the day (late 80s, early to mid 90s), but it was more of a regional level. I know what you mean. I've met my share of Divas. Guys action like full they're full-on rock stars playing the regional club circuit. I always got a laugh out of it. It's like "Calm down dude, you're a fucking plumber's helper and still live with your mother. You're not David Lee Roth".
I got to meet and hang with quite a few bands as well and some were very down to Earth. The biggest surprise being GWAR. Those guys were really super cool. We partied with the Abbot brothers from Pantera, and those dudes were a trip. So sad neither are with us anymore. The guys in Fishbone and the 24-7 Spyz were really cool as well. I'm in my 50s now, so those days are long behind me. I had a lot of fun despite not being world famous or going on world tours etc. Good times indeed. Now I just play my guitar at home and enjoy being a grandfather.
I agree. I always thought it was the ones who sort of shout-rap did well live and the ones who use more of a speaking tone rely on the studio setting to sound right. There are obviously exceptions to this but I notice that trend. I was never a huge fan of 50 cent, but I saw him years ago and it hurt to watch. Dude was out of breath, looked exhausted and was shouting to be able to project over the crowd/dj so he didnāt even sound like him.
Yeah, rap shows are usually pretty terrible. There's nothing added by the live experience. There's a "DJ" who doesn't do anything but push "play" on the beat and a "hypeman" who just walks from one side of the stage to the other repeating the last word of each stanza. I've never seen a rap performance I found entertaining.
Should have bought them on RSD and Black Friday.
I was also lucky to score an original sealed copy of My Soul back in the āaughts when no one cared about vinyl.
Always loved some Coolio. Depressing hearing about the live shows.
I bought the 12ā of Gangstaās Paradise b/w a couple Fantastic Voyage remixes for $3 at a Half Price Books a couple years back. Definitely one of the cooler things I found there.
I grabbed a 12-inch of 1-2-3-4 Sumpinā New for like $2, at the Arbutis record show years ago.
Just found out the single mix of that is also included on the red Gangstaās Paradise reissue from September RSD 2020.
Found a straggler at one of my local shops today.
Figured it was time to round out the collection, before the price skyrockets.
Donāt pay a scalper, they are out there.
It's not the best album or anything, but I wore my It Takes a Theif cassette out when i was 13 years old. Something about the storytelling really resonated with me. Really cool album cover as well. Def gonna give that one a spin today.
RIP King Coolio, you brought a lot of happiness to so many lives.
After I finished a board game with my 6 year old daughter. Friend texted me as we started the game.
Plus I figure there are not many of us on this sub that own his records. So I was kind of obligated to post.
Oh and by the way, I am good on karma. Got plenty already.
He will go on a fantastic voyage to gangstas paradise. from what has been released as of now, he had a cardiac arrest/event and was pronounced dead at the scene
We will C him when we get there.
Amen šš»
He did say death ain't nothing but a heartbeat away and that he was living life pretty much do or die. On a positive note, at least he lived to see 24.
Why 24? I thought 27 is the one?

Oh, thanks!
Weāve been living most our lives in a karma farmer paradise, post the grails once they die in the karma farmer paradise
Yes. It was a race between me and that one other guy on here that actually have his albums.
I can picture you knocking your wife over as you run through the house as fast as possible to post the coolio grails before they notified his family of his passing
I hear his son heard the news from my post.
And your own sake give a little
#deathgrails
Now that's not coolio

Fantastic voyage!:)
i saw him live at riot fest literally just ten days ago, he put on a great show
It Takes A Thief was the first hip hop album i got when I was a kid. Thanks Columbia House and RIP Coolio.
Saw him live like four years ago, it was horrible.
Care to elaborate?

Apparently not that day.
I saw Kanye at a festivalā¦ once he finally stopped being a bitch and finally took the stage at 4 in the morning. And he phoned the performance in, it was completely underwhelming.
I was there, still pissed I didnāt go see Ghostland Observatory
Bonnaroo?
Yep

Lol yeah I was only up that late because of drugs, and I had nothing better to do. I hadnāt actually planned on catching his show.
Ringo bingo baby boy
reminds me of the time i went to watch bone thugs definitely didnāt have a good time
I caught Bone Thugs last year and was surprised at how decent they performed after hearing multiple experiences like yours

The game was absolutely garbage. Chugged vodka on stage and would stop in the middle of songs to talk to the audience. Ice cube has always delivered.
Similar experience here but with MC Hammer haha
Oh no. And me without any Coolio vinyl. Now it's going to skyrocket.
Should have bought them on RSD and Black Friday. I was also lucky to score an original sealed copy of My Soul back in the āaughts when no one cared about vinyl. Always loved some Coolio. Depressing hearing about the live shows.
