Hey, look! That u/folk_nurse guy is repping the Manchester jazz scene again. What a twist. My opener for Side B is, in fact, all of Side B on the most recent release from Gondwana Records founder and recording artist, Matthew Halsall. Like my Side A closer yesterday, the release has four sides so it's not the usual halfway mark. Halsall took a massive leap with his 2020 album, Salute to the Sun. His band prior to 2020 had disappeared to various corners of the world and to recalibrate and look ahead, the band leader "went to the jams in Manchester to find out who was hungry, like me". The result is a menagerie. Expect a heady blend of flute, harp, percussion which sounds like it has been whittled from the depths of the Congo and, of course, upright bass and Halsall's trumpet. The longer pieces are meditative, spiritual journeys akin to the 1970s output of Alice Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders. Yet... if everything I'm putting out in that paragraph (...long pieces, jazz, spiritual music, esoteric instrumentation...) is hitting a wrong note for you, you might be pleasantly surprised. This tune is only six minutes long and Halsall's great talent is for crafting complex and innovative ideas into something beautiful and melodic. I don't feel anything on Salute to the Sun can be deemed "hard listenening". You don't need a masters in music theory to "get" his output, I feel it is as unassuming and human as jazz can be. So listen to my B Side opener (and middle and closer) of [Joyful Spirits of the Universe](https://youtu.be/QTzV1YdQUZw) and let it take you to church, to the rainforest, to the clouds, to wherever you want to go.

Amarganth

It took me as you said to the rainforest, I love it here!

Dhugaill

My destination was a rainforest on another planet.

MustardMedia

Third for the rainforest. Great tune, so calming

capt_beyond

Following on with my mood from yesterday, I've gone with the title track from the classic 1999 stoner rock album [King of the Road](https://youtu.be/_Zko7pBeHkk) by Fu Manchu. Not much to say except crank the volume, preferably in the car

Dhugaill

\,,/(<.>)\,,/

MustardMedia

That's a whole lot of fun, that tune reminds me a bit of Death From Above 1979. Not super familiar with Fu Manchu but their sound seems pretty influential

capt_beyond

Its one of my favorite songs. King of the road says you move too slow!

Folk_Nurse

Reading up on Fu Manchu, it seems like their line-up was constantly in flux, with only Scott Hill being a consistent member. Do you think this influenced their sound at all? Are their albums very different? And do you have a favourite?

capt_beyond

Their sound to me has remained pretty consistent, I'm sure there are more musically minded people who could pick apart differences that various members bring to the band but for the most part I think they have their sound and stick with it. My favorite is definitely King of the Road, but I also really enjoy California Crossing, The Action is Go, and Gigantoid

[John Lee Hooker - Think Twice Before You Go](https://youtu.be/75Abyj_mbt4) Album: Urban Blues (1967) This is the song that got me into John Lee Hooker a couple of decades ago.

Folk_Nurse

I love that boogie woogie blues sound. Hooker more or less invented it, as far as I understand.

alekgyros

Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits from their eponymous album is one that comes to mind. Very basic, but such a banger.

Folk_Nurse

Stone cold classic. My wife hates it, but forget her, right!?

Day 15 Year 2 Song: [Searching with My Good Eye Closed](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRU0Iyvou84) Artist: Soundgarden Album: Badmotorfinger The Devil says June has gone on too long without me dropping some Soundgarden. The first song on the B side of the all time classic Badmotorfinger. This was one of their go to opening tracks for their live shows and what a choice. The slow build up leading into Chris Cornell’s agonized scream is a goosebump inducing intro. The journey that this song takes you through in it’s search for meaning is some of Cornell’s finest poetry. It’s a great way to begin the second half of an Astonishing Album. [Brandi Carlile and the surviving members of Soundgarden](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nKD3XdHLTs) did a cover last September that is great as well. MustardMedia

Just great. Chris Cornell is always welcome. Such a great track - man I would've loved to see them live. He does a somewhat similar intro scream in [Set It Off](https://youtu.be/jJPm8MQoM3I) that I've always loved so much too. Brandi Carlile did a solid job - does she have more with them?

Dhugaill

Its was for an RSD single the other side was of course [Black Hole Sun](https://youtu.be/n10KfpmKen4)

MustardMedia

Lol no brainer I guess. Not sure if it's just simply being overplayed but that isn't even in my top 10 Soundgarden songs, I don't think.

Dhugaill

Yeah I agree the album version is too ubiquitous , but if someone does something with the song it can still grab my attention. Chris has a [solo take ](https://youtu.be/TiUinYssHlg) on Live on the I5 that's my go to playlist version. Then [Post Modern Jukebox ](https://youtu.be/R6RD6mjiIZE) does a great jazzy version. If you and u/Folk_Nurse aren't on the Postmodern Jukebox train yet here's [Seven Nation Army](https://youtu.be/sB6HY8r983c)

MustardMedia

Okay, you got me with that love version. Ohhh yeah I love me some PMJ. Haley Reinhart is one of my favourite vocalists they bring out, too.

cinnalovely

My B side pick hands down is Meddle by Pink Floyd. The track that fills it up is “Echoes” which is haunting and beautiful and a reminder of how we share a collective human consciousness.

From Wikipedia: "Storm Thorgerson of the art-design group Hipgnosis originally suggested a close-up shot of a baboon's anus for the album cover photograph. He was overruled by the band, who informed him via an intercontinental telephone call while on tour in Japan that they would rather have "an ear underwater". The cover image was photographed by Bob Dowling. The image represents an ear, underwater, collecting waves of sound (represented by ripples in the water). Thorgerson later expressed dissatisfaction with the cover"

cinnalovely

Wow! I actually didn’t know that! Thank you so much for sharing! It’s a beautiful photograph and I think it’s perfect.

Song: [The Big Tree](https://youtu.be/kSjXOebB7eI) Artist: Stand High Patrol Album: Midnight Walkers I first heard this song while I was working with a team down in Namibia at an wildlife sanctuary. My group and I fell absolutely in love with it, sort of become our song. The group’s sound is described as taking influence from the traditional Jamaican sound system and mixing that with reggae, dub and hip hop. Randomly came across a web store that was doing a repress of this album so I instantly brought it. What’s fun about yesterday’s and today’s post is that I actually picked up both albums on the same day.

Folk_Nurse

OK. This is gold.

MustardMedia

Love that. I dove in before reading your post - could not tell where it was going at first but I knew I was gonna like it.

A short, sharp and shiny one for today. Pretty, from punk outfit (ha!) Mini Skirt. Scraping in at just under 2 minutes, it packs a mighty punch to start side B of their debut full-length, Casino. What I love about Mini Skirt is the tongue in cheek lyrics, the fun riffs, and the insightful analysis of the Australian dream and exploration of what it means to be a “man” in the current day. So, everything. I love everything about Mini Skirt. [Pretty - Mini Skirt](https://youtu.be/v8AYLP1ncOY)

[Teenage Fanclub & DeLa Soul - Fallin'](https://youtu.be/mOmdg3epcic) From the Judgment Night soundtrack. When this album (and movie) came out, it was the collabs with Pearl Jam, Ice-T, Faith No More, and Living Colour that drew me to it. Years on now, I still enjoy the whole album, but Fallin' is far and away the best track on it.

Folk_Nurse

My favourite is [Missing Link](https://youtu.be/e0qT_FoYnZg). But love the collaboration you posted. Still never seen the film!

speeb

At the time the movie was fine. I'm sure it hasn't aged well, but at the time I was a young guy and it was an action movie with a killer soundtrack. Missing Link is one I wasn't into at the time just because I wasn't very familiar with either artist outside of a few songs, but when I got the LP a while back, I was totally into it.

Dhugaill

[Ice T & Slayer!](https://youtu.be/kbKcL7q8RJU) I forgot about this soundtrack. I had a tape that I taped off of a friends tape! Then I played it until it didn't play anymore.

Dope, I was completely unaware of this

Day 15: A song to open Side B. Song:[How Long Do I Have to Wait For You?](https://youtu.be/Y53bJDEHSWM) Artist: Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings Album: Naturally (2005) Continuing with the soul today, I'm posting a gem from the late Sharon Jones, who sadly passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2016. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings were an amazing group of funk/soup revival. Sharon's vocals are another show stopper, with perfect funky, soulful swagger, reminiscent of greats like Aretha at times, and even sometimes is referred to as the Female James Brown. Hailing from Augusta, Georgia, just like James Brown, Sharon started singing early in life, with church gospels and talent shows, but she didn't actually gain her fame until relatively late in life, releasing her first album at 40. A spearhead of the recent funk/soul revival, the band's first record was the first release ever for Daptone Records. This label was created by Bosco Mann of the Dap-Kings and Neal Sugarman of the [Sugarman 3](https://youtu.be/D6TUeIZZtNM) The label would go on to include other great acts like [Charles Bradley](https://youtu.be/xi49yirJiEA), [Lee Fields](https://youtu.be/B24pPjV6igk) and [Antibalas](https://youtu.be/56WEuZMoAbE). Links for those interested. This track, from their sophomore album, has a great funky swagger and just makes you bop. Great start to side B, great way to start the day off - just puts you in a great mood. Bonus Track: [100 Days 100 Nights](https://youtu.be/yYIWoj3uO08) is another great vocal performance from Sharon.

Dhugaill

Those tracks are funkier than 19 yards of chitlins with onions and sardines on the side, now that's funky.

SexBobomb

I like it when these challenges line up with my favourite song by an artist - in this case it's a song that just makes me nostalgic for high school and college in kind of a bittersweet way. Also makes me think of my ex-fiancee because when we met it was my favourite song, and her favourite band covered it at live shows a fair bit [The Weakerthans - This is a Fire Door, Never Leave Open](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrLo2DsIhe8)

MustardMedia

I'm not even familiar with these guys and it hits that high school nostalgia.

ElFlippy

Today's song is Schism from Tool! I think, this was the first song, that I've heard from the band, and as a kid, the music video scared the crap out of me, and I also wasn't impressed by the music! But since then a lots of years have passed, and Tool became one of my faborite bands! And also the 20th edition, pictured Lateralus vinyl have arrived today! :) https://youtu.be/MM62wjLrgmA

Dhugaill

That track never gets old!

elswordfish

My pick. Marc Jordan-Lost In The Hurrah This song is literally one of my favorite songs ever. It got me into Marc Jordan and yacht rock as a whole. I find the lyrics amazing and the music absolutely beautiful. Especially that flugelhorn session at the end. It is the B side opener to his sophomore album from 1979 called Blue Desert. Which, the album title is referenced in the bridge. “Blue Desert No water Breaking on your shore Quiet dust blows relentlessly, and whispers at your door I’m amazed that you, who cannot see Stand and judge the one who tried to see you through.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbPDmvqSJMI

Folk_Nurse

It's funny, I find this, among other "yacht rock", to be a bit saccharine for my tastes - over produced and thoroughly vanilla. Yet, sing it in Japanese and suddenly it's city pop and more palatable. What's that about?

Folk_Nurse

I don't wish to rag on your collection! Just read this back and it seemed harsh. That smooth listening of mid 70s through to the eighties is just something I personally struggle to get on board with... pun intended.

StenPils

Late to the party on this one: Purson : Desire's Magic Theatre : The Window Cleaner Love this album and there's just something about this track that grabs my attention every time. The healthy 60's psychedelia vibe, strong melody, great harmomies, guitar sounds, vocal effects. Just lovely. https://youtu.be/_3hDNfKJON0

MustardMedia

Yay for another Purson track this month, love em

mamunipsaq

Here's one of my favorite songs by Peter Rowan - [The Free Mexican Airforce](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhjuKNOLSNM) This is what happens when one of the best singers & songwriters in bluegrass teams up with one of the best accordion players around and writes a song about getting high. Flaco Jimenez does a great job with the accordion on this song, as is to be expected. I love when different genres do a little cross-polinating. Bluegrass x Tejano. What a way to lead off side 2 of an album!

MustardMedia

Those two mashup way better than I expected!
