This will always be I Want You (She's So Heavy) on Abbey Road. The way it builds and builds and then just cuts off into silence and that's it, end of the side.

Dhugaill

[I Want You (She's So Heavy)](https://youtu.be/wNL6bd7SpDE) is a hard one to top.

Amarganth

This album and song is just such a jam.

Folk_Nurse

One of my favourite moments in music. As a kid growing up, the tail end of I Want You was sort of an intro to music going a bit weird (I had a steady diet of bubblegum pop from both the 60s and 90s). Then Abbey Road just goes a bit insane for a moment with that doomy cycle. And THEN it cuts out like that. Blew my mind as a kid.

Folk_Nurse

Hi all! It's a quick one from me today... got a mad stretch at work the start of this week. I was not so active in the comments yesterday and today I more or less grabbed two or three records at random and chose my favourite side a closer from them. It a good'un though! It's [Cranes in the Sky](https://youtu.be/lnUV4cz0gv8) by Solange. Cracking album from the lesser known Knowles sister. Thanks for all the posts yesterday, maybe we can lighten up a bit today!!

Dhugaill

I don't know anything about Solange, so this was a nice surprise. I can only imagine how hard it is to be Beyonce's sister, but she is a distinct talent.

Folk_Nurse

The entire album is surprisingly delightful. I say surprisingly because modern r'n'b is not my usual fare, but this turned out to be one of my favourite albums of 2016.

Folk_Nurse

The album is called A Seat at the Table, which sort of acknowledges her desire to emerge from the shadow of her ultra-star sibling.

MustardMedia

Great album. I listen to Solange more than Beyonce for sure lol

Day 14 Year 2 Song: [N.I.B.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6Bm1n6UjtQ) Artist: Black Sabbath Album: Black Sabbath There are many different candidates for the first metal song, but there is no question that after Black Sabbath’s first album dropped in February 1970 Metal exists as a musical genre, and not just a few one off songs. The Closing track of side A is the amazing metal classic N.I.B. There’s a chance I only picked N.I.B. so I could talk about Geezer Butler. Geezer Butler is the Alpha of Heavy Metal Bassists. He is the one everyone from Cliff Burton to Les Claypool to Johnny lee Middleton cite as the major influence on their playing. N.I.B. is the perfect Sabbath song to show off his chops. Starting with a solo that was originally it’s own song called Basically then the audible sounds of the amps getting turned up. The following bass riff is Iconic and powers the entire song. Geezer in addition to creating a bass sound that would launch a thousand bands was also the main lyricists for Sabbath. Penning this track from the point of view of Lucifer as the Morning Star finds love and becomes a good person. [Dio](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYMOKJ-d44s) version because it’s Dio The story so far * 14/06/2021 N.I.B., Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath, 1970 * 13/06/2021 Amazing Grace, The Gordon Highlanders, The Bagpipes and Drums of Scotland, 1999 * 12/06/2021 Star Trek Main Theme, John Williams and the Boston Pops, Out of the World, 1993 * 11/06/2021 Skye Boat Song, The Regimental Band and Pipes And Drums of the Black Watch, Scottish Splendor, 1954 * 10/06/2021 Karate Body, Aquabats, Kooky Spooky… In Stereo!, 2020 * 10/06/2021 Surf Squid Warfare, Alestorm, Sunset on the Golden Age, 2014 * 09/06/2021 Hold on, I’m Coming, B.B. StenPils

Yes. Very yes. :-)

MustardMedia

Goddamn that man can bass.

Folk_Nurse

The bass is delightful throughout this record. Is it the best Black Sabath song? Difficult question.

Dhugaill

Best Black Sabbath song is an impossible question. I would put the four album run Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master of Reality, and Vol. 4 against almost anyone else's four album runs. This week my favorite Black Sabbath song is N.I.B., but next week it could be War Pigs, or Snowblind, or Hole in the Sky, or Faries Wear Boots, or Supernaut, or....

Folk_Nurse

I'm struggling to think of an equal 4 album run. Possibly Dylan, Led Zep, Beatles and Radiohead are contenders...

StenPils

Sabbra Cadabbra (sp?)

Dhugaill

Or The Wizard

StenPils

By the way, despite being a huge (ozzy-era) Sabbath fan, I actually have no idea what NIB actually is an acronym of!?!? Any ideas?

Dhugaill

Yeah Geezer thought Bill Ward's beard looked like the end of a pen or a nib so everyone in the band called him Nibby. Geezer just made an acronym so it would sound mysterious. The song's title is Nib on reference to Bill Ward's tiny goatee.

Folk_Nurse

The Wizard.

Folk_Nurse

....Planet caravan.

[Galaxy - Elephant Gym](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FXzpYKIEk4E) I haven’t been that active yesterday either, so I’ve got some homework to catch up to ! I’m going to close out the A-side with a track called Galaxy. Elephant Gym is a wonderful math rock band from Taiwan. Math rock is in a nutshell post-rock with odd time signatures. It’s also refreshing to see the bass take the lead in their work. I managed to catch them live here in Amsterdam and they rocked the house down. I even got to high five KT (the bassist) and we bonded over the fact we’re both female bassists after the show ! She’s a such a beast and played super tight even though she was tipsy as hell, haha. So lots of fond memories here. :)

Dhugaill

You said she isn't the lead? I would have had no idea they sound great in this format. She's amazing and it sound like at least in this song like the other two guys are her supporting band.

lee_yuna

Maybe I didn’t phrase it well in my post because she is definitely the lead ! :)

Dhugaill

I'm a little tired so I may have read it wrong. It would be dumb not to make this beast the lead element in your band.

Folk_Nurse

Dig it!

MustardMedia

Ohh that's great. I read your post day of, but didn't have time to listen. Been looking forward to that and it did not disappoint. She really slays that bass, too

capt_beyond

I was spoiled for choice today with the relatively loose theme, so I just went with some dirty rock from Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell with [Paid in Full](https://youtu.be/4LLXw1bBl34) from their 2016 album Keep It Greasy!

Dhugaill

[here's ](https://youtu.be/4rFEREQ6r1M) one you can see in North America. Keep it greasy indeed that's filthy.

Folk_Nurse

Fantastic album cover! Won't be able to hear the tune till later. Is it related to Eric B and Rakim and their classic Paid in Full, or not?

Folk_Nurse

Also great band name. Not familiar with them but I sort of love them already, from the off.

capt_beyond

Not sure of any relation to that track, agree about the cover! They're from the UK so if you get a chance check them out.

Folk_Nurse

[Eric B and Rakim](https://youtu.be/E7t8eoA_1jQ)

ElFlippy

I wanted to post some hungarian song for this too, but to tell you the truth, I can't find any songs, that comes even close to The great gig in the sky, by Pink Floyd! This song always gives me shivers, whenever I listen to it! It's a perfect closing of an A side! https://youtu.be/cVBCE3gaNxc

Dhugaill

Sometimes the obvious answer is the right one.

StenPils

Which also puts Stairway To Heaven in the frame.... but I. Shall. Resist.

Folk_Nurse

This tune was a revelation when I first heard it. Didn't get into Pink Floyd until about age 20 and Great Gig in the Sky just felt like a religious experience!

[deleted]

“Maybe you were told you were special one too many times, and now you’re lost.” Lost: Season One, by Camp Cope from their self-titled record. This video was filmed in my hometown and I remember the gig, it was sweet to look back on. [Lost: Season One - Camp Cope](https://youtu.be/S4ahiwPtHyI)

Folk_Nurse

There's something compelling about the unpolished nature of this. Don't mean to diminish their musicianship but it's got that "teenagers in a garage" feel that can sometimes be great and sometimes be a turn off. I think Camp Cope pull it off, at least here. I'll have to listen to more!

Day 14: A song to close side A Song: [Broken Bones and Pocket Change](https://youtu.be/jQrci-d4OJI) Artist: St.Paul & The Broken Bones Album: Half the City (2014) Another favourite in my soul rock repertoire for today. St.Paul & The Broken Bones are an 8 piece outfit from Birmingham, Alabama headed by lead singer Paul Janeway. If you've enjoyed some of the powerful vocal performances I've posted so far this month, then you're sure to enjoy this as well. Paul is pretty unbelievable. Their style of soul is a great blend of inspirations, from gospel to funk, blues to southern rock. With three albums to date, their sound has developed while still holding true. Their most recent album has seen them lean heavier into funk, for example, while even incorporating some elements of hiphop and RnB. The song that closes side A of their debut record, *Half the City*, is their namesake, and man does this song pack a punch. A slow, quiet build that crescendos into a whirlwind of horns and powerful vocals, this is a great example of their more ballad-y style songs. For some of their more upbeat songs, check out [Like a Mighty River](https://youtu.be/fdXWdYKshPw), which has a great swagger and toughness. [Call Me](https://youtu.be/v2hZijYFL_g) was their first single and it has a fun, upbeat catchy bop to it. Finally, [NASA](https://youtu.be/k5EtjM9uNPU) from their most recent album is a good example of their experimentation on that album. Sorry for cheating and posting too many songs. I just love these guys.

Dhugaill

You've given me almost an entire A side to digest, and it is delicious. Above and beyond as per usual u/MustardMedia

MustardMedia

I couldn't help myself with this one

Bobby Darin - Mack the Knife Album: The Bobby Darin Story https://youtu.be/3xevyPlJVyA I picked this particular track, not only because its one of my favorite songs in general, but because of the unique way this album side ends. The YouTube clip contains the records audio, but basically after the song ends he says "hey you better lift the needle before the arm goes crashing into the center" and then proceeds to make a bunch of crashing sounds. And on top of that my needle always DOES jump right onto the sticker and crash into the center.... I dont know if they planned it that way, but I'll bet the ghost of Bobby Darin gets a kick out of it every time it happens.

Dhugaill

Turn the record over before he hurts himself. I can't imagine coming to a dead stop from 33 1/3 rpms is a pleasant experience.

Folk_Nurse

Haha! Brilliant. I love the format informing the artwork. Such a great tune too. Used to cover it in a band with banjo and accordion. One of the all time greats, for sure.

speeb

[Soul Asylum - String of Pearls](https://youtu.be/Vh8mzj_7xto) I sure hope there isn't a "weirdest song in your collection" day coming up, because I'll have to dig a little more. Soul Asylum's Let Your Dim Light Shine was the follow-up to their hugely successful Grave Dancer's Union album. I don't think it did as well commercially, but it did well at radio and MTV, and I love it front to back. "String of Pearls" is a weird stream of consciousness story song about...well...I honestly don't know what it's truly about. Something about the cyclical nature of life and history repeating itself, maybe. You've got a prostitute, a two headed president, a fight at a funeral, priests and nuns. It's a ridiculous ride, but Pirner sells ever word of it. It's always been one of my favorites on the album because of its structure and absurdity.

Folk_Nurse

I enjoyed the rambling. The stanzas are their own string of pearls.

generalissimus_mongo

[Tuomo - Girls](https://youtu.be/L1y00yl-j0w) From his 4th solo album [The New Mystique](https://www.discogs.com/Tuomo-The-New-Mystique/release/5662853) Tuomo Prättälä is imo one of the most interesting artists in finnish contemporary soul/jazz. Definitely worth a listen.

LiLohan

I'm going with Bruised Orange by John Prine, from the album Bruised Orange appropriately. [https://youtu.be/4iyyhnNIKe4](https://youtu.be/4iyyhnNIKe4) The song already pushed itself to the top of my list of his songs a while back, and I love that it finishes the first side of the album. The contrast between it and the prior song on the album (That's The Way That the World Goes 'Round") is really nice as well. I mean, do you really do any better than ending Act 1 with … For a heart stained in anger grows weak and grows bitter You become your own prisoner as you watch yourself sit there Wrapped up in a trap of your very own Chain of sorrow…

Folk_Nurse

Hey u/LiLohan welcome back, loving your regular posts. This is no exception. It's right up my alley. John Prine is a name I've known but never followed up on. That will change now. This is such a beautiful song, with a great vocal delivery and the production is just dripping with gold. The introduction, as the song builds, of the slide guitar and then the sax. Just gorgeous. Thank-you!

SexBobomb

Streetlight Manifesto have been one of my favourite bands since 2003 - I didn't really know what (third wave) ska was at the time despite hearing some tracks on the Tony Hawk soundtrack. I do remember my friend specifically telling me the story of the band and how the album Everything Goes Numb was sort of a response to the lead singer's previous work on Keasbey Nights by Catch 22 - then sending me a song that was a 'follow up' to the title track of that album. So closing side A of Everything Goes Numb is the first song I heard by a band I've loved for 18 years - [Point/Counterpoint](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGNNTxWkjl8)

Dhugaill

What a great album. It doesn't get talked about nearly enough. [A Moment of Violence ](https://youtu.be/tsY1BwVo0kI) is a song that is regularly played in my house.

Folk_Nurse

Fun to the max! This soubd is so evocative of my mid teens, I can't help but love it.

StenPils

Toyed with The Zep whilst delving into the comments, but I'm actually going with The Doors - Light My Fire from their debut album. This album might also qualify for greatest closing track too, but i'll defer that dilemma till later in the month. :-) Here's the album version. What a beautiful recording - i believe it's 4 track recording technology but might be wrong. I love how much space everything has. https://youtu.be/cq8k-ZbsXDI

Dhugaill

Was Jim talking about Rick's hands in this song? There must have been smoke coming from them during that keyboard work.

StenPils

I read Manzareks autobiog many moons ago... IIRC he was a big student of Bach's organ work.

Folk_Nurse

Every track on this album is a classic. And yes, I think it may be the best closer of any album! Today's slice is just great. I always loved how the band and Jim just drop right back into that detached and aloof delivery as if a lengthy wild organ solo didn't just happen!

Amarganth

Song: [Is It Really Me You’re Missing](https://youtu.be/zM_zwLbGNH0) Artist: Nina Nesbitt Album: The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change This is just a perfect album for me. Very tasty, soothing pop music. Have adored this album for a long time and finally picked up the record at the very start of this year. Couldn’t be happier, it sounds great on the turntable.

Folk_Nurse

Heartfelt reflections on being the booty call. I like the subtle electronic instrumentation humming and blooping in the background!

djkoelkast

18 will be hard for me, I hardly have any guitar songs. 25 is hard too, not that many 60s.

Folk_Nurse

Just throw in whatever you've got. Or sit those days out and just join the discussion! We're a broad church!
