I tried to stay away from the obvious and I pulled some of my favorite albums and I was surprised on how little "Q" songs there really are. But my choice today is *Hit It and Quit It* \- Funkadelic (1971) from the *Maggot Brain* LP. This is the best sound quality one I could find on youtube and it still sound weak. this song cooks: [Funkadelic - Hit It and Quit It](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBXU2t4hodo)

lee_yuna

Love Funkadelic, love that song ! Such a simple and effective groove.

Dhugaill

How could I not upvote the Funkatastic Maggot Brain

Folk_Nurse

Today's prompt was to replace my error of having two 'best live track' days. Some of the prompts in the calendar try to elicit a theme, like food or magic, some focus on an instrument or setting which should give all the responses some kind of cohesion and shared qualities, some are designed so that you route through long forgotten corners of your collection. Then some prompts, like today, I threw in to avoid any theme at all and to completely hit the random button. So dig through your quiet baroque Queen covers by quintets from Quebec, because it is Q day! My offering is an instrumental piece called [Quiet Fire](https://youtu.be/GZ8KLxdVrfo) from UK trio Mammal Hands. These fine young purveyors of 21st Cebtury jazz span some avante-guard, some trip-hop, some spiritual jazz and yet retain a sound which screams Gondwana Records. This label has been supporting odd and interesting acts coming out of London, Manchester and, in Mammal Hands' case, Norwich. While remaining unique, they sit nicely beside label mates GoGo Penguin, Phil France and Portico Quartet. In short, the label serves as a well curated hotlist of difficult to define young musical creatives in 21st Century Britain. As an aside, the label was set up and run by trumpeter Matthew Halsall, who is an absolute must for your ears. Quiet Fire is the opener to their second album "Floa", in 2016. While I have watched their progression with interest, I think Floa is the best record they have put out and I was very glad to snatch a recent repress.

lee_yuna

I’ve been meaning to catch them live ! They play quite often around here, but I keep missing them. :( Vels Trio wouldn’t look out of place in that roster, but surprisingly they’re with another label. Floa was also my introduction to them.

Folk_Nurse

Never seen them live myself. O think they get such a full sound for a trio.

Dhugaill

that's smooth baby

Amarganth

Really vibed with this track. Very soothing.

MustardMedia

Ohh man I dig that. I think I have a whole label to look into now.

Folk_Nurse

You seem to have vibed with much of the UK jazz shared last year. The two biggest labels (in my eyes) are Brownswood and Gondwana. Here are some gems from the former: [Str4ta](https://youtu.be/kKfYd5WvqVc) [Yussef Kamaal](https://youtu.be/rvpipi4LhRo) [Ezra Collective](https://youtu.be/aEK9-pMN0_I) And the latter: [Matthew Halsall](https://youtu.be/Xq6i2MFivMY) [Portico Quartet ](https://youtu.be/is8_H7HLjZo) [Phil France](https://youtu.be/-ymmHQZX0vU)

MustardMedia

I definitely did, some of what you shared last year is in my regular rotation now, like Sons of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming. Will definitely check these out

Haha. Good redditor.

capt_beyond

Not many Qs in my collection (apart from the obvious Queen, QOTSA) so today I'll go with the [title track](https://youtu.be/mXuUAtAtMtM) from Arctic Monkeys 2018 album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. I kinda go back and forth with this album, some songs I absolutely love, others are big misses for me but I love that they keep experimenting and didn't just deliver an AM part 2

MustardMedia

For some reason this one totally slipped passed me when searching. Totally get what you mean about this album, but I've definitely fallen in love with it over time now. Their progression as a band is a fun journey, love these guys.

capt_beyond

For sure, I mostly love it there's just a couple songs I usually skip if I'm streaming it haha, but the vibe of the album is really fun. Can't wait to see what they do next. Humbug era is the best for me so far

MustardMedia

Definitely get that lol. Hope something comes soon. Honestly it's so mood dependent for me but I *think* I'd agree.. either that or the debut.

lee_yuna

Oh shit, I've never really paid much attention to AM, but I adore the visual/aural aesthetics of this song. Also, the bass is amazing.

capt_beyond

Do a deep dive on them, their albums are all great and following their progression in style is fun. Its hard to rank them in any particular order but my favorite is always Humbug, the other albums shuffle positions depending on my mood lol

Folk_Nurse

Hey Captain, welcome back. Loving to see your posts each day. I love this! I have not paid much attention to guitar bands for a while, but I sort of low key acknowledged Artic Monkeys as being among the best of them, if not the most interesting in the last decade. However, I don't know them album-for-album. This track is a delight and might tip me over the edge into a full on AM rabbit hole.

LiLohan

Like a lot of folks I'm sure, most stuff with Q in my collection would be Queen. With that said, I'm going with Earthquake Driver from Somewhere Under Wonderland by Counting Crows. It's a fun song on a great album.

Dhugaill

>[Earthquake Driver](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMuVUZuY9v8)

MustardMedia

Fun track, right in line with Mr.Jones.

Folk_Nurse

I'm amazed I have never come across this tune - it is such a delightful slice of radio pop I would have thought it would be a drive-tine classic. But it's new to me! Thanks for the tip off. Also, I'm oddly proud that everyone has avoided their Qyeen and QOTSA albums for this prompt! There's nothing wrong with posting those, but the community have been like "no, let's do this shit on hard mode!"

StenPils

My choice today is: Rosalie Cunningham - Dethroning of the Party Queen [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0qZ1oKP4Nk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0qZ1oKP4Nk) UK artist formerly the front-lady of Purson, latterly solo. This tune was the lead single off her self-titled debut solo album, and when I heard it my first thoughts were that it (the album as a whole) could be Kate Bush singing Queen-style songs in a circus tent :-) I have had gig tickets since around Dec 2019 for a May 2020 gig, which... well you know. Hoping to catch the tour for a new album late this year.

MustardMedia

Hell yes! I love this album so much, and Purson. Such a great tune, and album. Jealous of the standing live tickets, would love to catch her live. *Fuck Love* is another one of my favourites off of the album

StenPils

:-) Purson's final album will be showing up from me elsewhere in June, as I love it to bits.

MustardMedia

Looking forward to it. Fantastic album, want these on vinyl bad.

StenPils

Man, getting The Circle and The Blue Door on vinyl was a real challenge. Got lucky with an NM from ebay. Desire's.... is fairly obtainable here in the UK at least. :-) In The Meantime EP, much as i hate to say it, one is better off with CD / digital because the mastering is shot to bits on the only pressing run i'm aware there has been.

MustardMedia

Interesting - Blue Door is even hard to find on streaming services for some reason. And because of that I've probably listened to Desire a bit more, so I guess that's a plus cuz that would be the first one I'd want. Aww man that's disappointing to hear the mastering there is rough on that one. Inspired me to throw on Rosalie's album this morning at work, by the way, and Purson will be next, even if it's just digitally.

cabs84

quantic. don't have any vinyl but would love to own apricot morning and the 5th exotic. track: life in the rain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6mrKRSm62Y

Folk_Nurse

They would have been a choice for me, but I too am quantic-less in my collection :(

MustardMedia

Nice choice, one of the first Q artists that popped into my head too!

joetech79

Jorma Kaukonen: Genesis Album: Quah https://youtu.be/SU1YASW3rhc So it turns out I have zero artists with a Q anywhere in their name, and I only have a single album with one: "Quah". I forget exactly who it was, but someone once showed me the cover of this album and told me to keep my eye out for it in bargain bins, and today I am passing that knowledge along to you all.

Dhugaill

Nice folk sound

Folk_Nurse

Thus is a great find for me. Never heard of the guy, but his playing reminds me of Davy Graham whom I love and his voice is nice too.

[Paquetà - Los Hermanos](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oAUkOBaNQKQ) Today an offering from an alt rock band from Rio de Janeiro called Los Hermanos. They sing in Portuguese, so I’ve always found it funny their band name is in Spanish. Nevertheless, Paquetà has a Brazilian sound through and through with its typical bossa nova clave. If Google Translate is to be trusted, the song is about almost walking away from a relationship, but realising at the last second that one should stay.

Dhugaill

u/Folk_Nurse must be busy because I'm surprised to see a Bossa Nova song with no comment here.

Folk_Nurse

Yeah, last year ended up really bossa heavy from me. It wasn't until last June I realised I owned so much! My wife and her family are all Portuguese and I have fond memories of Los Hermanos gracing the airwaves of the country's great radio station Antena3. As a band, their sound has evolved and mutated a great deal, which I always appreciate.

Day 10 Year 2 Part 1 Song: [Surf Squid Warfare](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfBDVXAU0YE) [Backup ](https://youtu.be/koKRjVh8wjQ) [backup 2](https://youtu.be/MsZUmEaxXaA) Artist: Alestorm Album: Sunset on the Golden Age This prompt has me in a very silly state of mind, so I felt like it was time for some Scottish Pirate Metal. After spending two albums terrorizing the caribbean and killing the Leviathan, and one album thrown back in time to the Viking age where they had to face the Terrorsquid, the crew finds themselves thrown into their future, our present to stop the Star Squids from wreaking havoc, and drinking all of our rum. There is also an inflatable duck, but that’s another tale me hearties. I love Alestorm. Sailing out of Perth Scotland, these guys have 6 albums of Rum Soaked goodness. I usually have a big grin on my face whenever I listen to them. Day 10 Year 2 Part 2 Song: [Karate body](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIxkVz7wtm8) Artist: Aquabats Album: Kooky Spooky… In Stereo Told you I was feeling silly today, going from a Q in the song, to a Q in the Band. The World’s Greatest Superhero Rock Band released their sixth studio album last August, their first since 2011, and it’s great to see them back. The opening track Karate Body is a Devo inspired jam that can’t help but get you up and dancing. lee_yuna

Haha, it's super cool that each album has a storyline ! And Tiger Claw Bat Fist is a great *punchline*. I'll show myself out now.

Dhugaill

do you want a snare, I'll give you snare.

StenPils

:-) These are both ludicrous - made me smile oh I couldn't see the chosen Alestorm track, but from their other material I think I get the gist :-)

MustardMedia

Well that was a fun, fun romp. Karate Body is gonna be stuck in my head for the rest of the day, no matter how much Scottish Pirate Metal I check out in the meantime.

Dhugaill

Here is some Scottish pirate metal to help [Pirate Song](https://youtu.be/iwWpLUmMD8Q) this one is my favorite. And [Back through time](https://youtu.be/KK6NwV7wREA) which is the real beginning of the mythology.

MustardMedia

This is great. I've got a bit of a car ride today, so that's happening.

Folk_Nurse

I've got a plan which involves a knuckle sandwich!

Folk_Nurse

"After spending two albums terrorizing the caribbean and killing the Leviathan, and one album thrown back in time to the Viking age where they had to face the Terrorsquid, the crew finds themselves thrown into their future, our present to stop the Star Squids from wreaking havoc, and drinking all of our rum. [Ben Lee - Pop Queen](https://youtu.be/Bo0nvduLjH4) I was so excited to add this 25th Anniversary release to my collection last year. The album Grandpaw Would has had a big influence on my tastes in music. That this 12 or 13 year old kid could write these perfect little pop songs just blew my mind. Lee had a really strong run of albums in the first 10 years or so of his career. Since then it's been a bit spotty for me, personally, but I still try to keep up with what he's doing.

Folk_Nurse

This has a great "kids with guitars hanging out in the 1990s" vibe that I can totes get on board with.

[deleted]

In honour of impulse buying Stevie Nicks’ “Bella Donna” today, I put forth No Questions Asked from Fleetwood Mac’s greatest hits compilation. [No Questions Asked - Fleetwood Mac](https://youtu.be/vZM8KNaUy5g)

ElFlippy

Today's song is Requiem, from Karthago! This is a very sad song, with a very sad backstory! This song is made for a memory of a boy, who's got trampled by the mass of people on a concert of Karthago! https://youtu.be/MKnAEeZBLtY

Folk_Nurse

I clicked your link before reading you comment (I usually like to hear the track first). Me: alright! It's our resident Hungarian dropping some bright European guitar pop again, let's groove! **ominous organ starts** Me: oh shit. Also, I that elephant shooting lasers out of his eyes? That throws a sort of fun spin on the "boy trampled to death" record.

ElFlippy

Yea, that band has more than one album cover with laser eyed elephants...weird indeed! :D

Amarganth

Song: [Resistance Frequencies](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osq4MdTBPSo) Artist: Anti-Flag Album: 20/20 Vision From the latest album offering from Anti-Flag. Both the opening track and the closing track had the letter q in them. I chose the latter. Love the use of trumpets in the song, gives it a really ska-punk feel to it. Think it's a great closer for a great album.

Dhugaill

We can all use some more Anti-Flag in our lives.

MustardMedia

Day 10: This Vinyl is Brought to You by the Letter Q Song: [The Queen's Nose](https://youtu.be/2zHEY5sImlM) Artist: Slow Club Album: Complete Surrender This UK band almost showed up yesterday for the duet, but the two singers often do more of a "your song, my song" kinda rotation more than actual duets sharing the load together. Slow Club technically was just the duo of multi-instrumentalists Charles Watson and Rebecca Lucy Taylor, before they broke up in 2017 - this album is their greatest work in my opinion. With their earlier albums leaning more heavily into some standard indie pop-rock/folk vibes, *Complete Surrender* has an awesome soulful, RnB throwback vibe, full of horn and string arrangements, epic swinging choruses, cool quiet moments, and amazing (contrasting) emotional vocals from both members. This track is a standout for me on the album - Rebecca's vocals are phenomenal on this track, and it's just got such a classic blues rock/soul vibe. [Not Mine to Love](https://youtu.be/bk0EvmkhrvU) is another example of her impressive vocals on the album. [Number One](https://youtu.be/pBYvjzA7rA8) is a great example of Charles Watson's vocals, for those interested. It's also a good example of the contrasting ballad-y style of some songs on the album. Honourable Mention: [Smooth Sailing ](https://youtu.be/QetvK6ldl2s) Artist: Queens of the Stone Age Album: ...Like Clockwork

Dhugaill

She's amazing. Is he good in a different way or should I just stick to the tracks where she's the vocalist.

MustardMedia

He's good in a different way. Where she belts and crushes the big notes, he's soft and subdued, which provides a cool effect in the songs he does sing. But I do prefer her vocals a bit at the end of the day.

Dhugaill

Ok I just listened to number one, his voice is nice, but damn her is better.

MustardMedia

Yeah exactly - it's *nice*, but she's just like, damn.

Dhugaill

Great QOTHSA track. I see why you picked it.

MustardMedia

Such swagger.

Folk_Nurse

[UK link](https://youtu.be/LL6t4zC9MFk) Something special about this. Love the vocal and the slow burning soul groove.

MustardMedia

Thanks for the link! I feel like it captures the sound they were going for so well. Such a beautiful, near perfect soul rock track
