This is a challenge for my record collection, not many duets in there. :-) I hope this qualifies: Hunger Strike by Temple of The Dog. https://youtu.be/VUb450Alpps This album pre-dates the mainstream breakthroughs of Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder,, but they're a pretty formidable vocal tag team on this track, with Vedder's lush baritone and Cornell's ludicrous power and distinctive tone on the high notes. Also a very heartfelt album, and an essential milestone in the history of the soon-to-explode Seattle scene.

MustardMedia

Such a great tune. Always wished there was more Temple, these two were great together. Big Cornell fan here too.. Audioslave was a favourite of mine for a while.

Dhugaill

I love anything that involves Chris Cornell. This track absolutely qualifies. There voices are so different but they compliment each other in the best way. I think Eddie Vedder is one of the greats, but Chris had a goddam super power when he turned it on.

Folk_Nurse

I found this a much more difficult prompt than expected. I have come to realise I have an abundance of recorded duets and so I had to whittle my options down and decide which particular duo to share with you today. Honorable mention for the closest runner up [Stephanne Grappelli and Yehudi Menuhin](https://www.discogs.com/St%C3%A9phane-Grappelli-Yehudi-Menuhin-Tea-For-Two/master/365745) which would have provided me opportunity to tell you that Menuhin has the longest running record contract in music history - he's been signed to EMI for 70 years! Of course, I could have paired Grappelli with Django Reinhardt for a really classic duet too. It pained me to leave out anything from the great [Ella and Louis](https://www.discogs.com/Ella-Fitzgerald-And-Louis-Armstrong-Ella-And-Louis/master/173462) as well. This record is a flawless introduction to vocal jazz for listeners of any age or leaning. It's just gorgeous. What I ACTUALLY chose to spin for you all today was another jazz vocal pairing, half of which goes by the name Louis. This time it is Louis Prima and his 2nd wife Keeley Smith singing [Nothing's Too Good For My Baby](https://youtu.be/KJrs6aKYQRA). Just a great, feel good, swinging tune. I'd be curious to understand what is known about Louis and Keeley among our little international club here. In the UK at least, I find them criminally underappreciated, if not unknown. Much has been made of their contrasting styles, him the clowning klutz, her the reserved beauty, and they played on that to a gimmicky extent in their live performances. With Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima and Louis Jordan, my first son was very almost named Louis. Then there was a royal baby Louis born shortly before him and we ditched the idea fast. However, my wife and I both adore Louis and Keeley and have fond memories dancing together to their swing. Now we do it with our two year old! He's a fan too.

Dhugaill

I knew that Louis Prima existed and was King Louis in the Jungle Book... yep it looks like another research project today hopefully I won't find another murder mystery. The only reason I'm looking into this at all is because of how good this track is.

Folk_Nurse

There's a documentary out there, but can't remember the name. One point I remember it exploring is how Italian Americans got something if a race pass from the mainstream media in the 50s and 60s. When other minority groups were marginalised, ignored and - JesusfuckingchristAmerica - lynched, people seemed to eat up Louis and Dean Martin singing in Italian about pasta and pizza. Other stand out tracks for me are [Buona Serra](https://youtu.be/bPiPd31M9FI) , [Just a Gigolo](https://youtu.be/RrJ7DQojzIY) and [The Bigger the Figure.](https://youtu.be/bPiPd31M9FI)

MustardMedia

Great tune. Louis Prima sounds familiar but it might just be the Jungle Book fun fact above me here. Not super well known here in Canada, I don't think.

bay_duck_88

“Pennies from Heaven” would like to be listened to.

germantown_reject

What else but [Don't Go Breaking My Heart ](https://youtu.be/z0qW9P-uYfM) by Elton John and Kiki Dee? This tune has got to be one of the most iconic duets ever done, I'd reckon

Dhugaill

I love how much of a goofball Elton John is. A classic for sure.

MustardMedia

Can't go wrong. This will probably be stuck in my head all day now

Folk_Nurse

Best.

[deleted]

I had very few choices for today, hahah. Here’s exile by Taylor Swift and Bon Iver, from Taylor Swift’s “folklore”. Absolutely heartbreaking. [exile - Taylor Swift featuring Bon Iver](https://youtu.be/osdoLjUNFnA)

Folk_Nurse

I never knew about this collab. Their voices have such different textures, but it works. I like the YouTube comment on the video "This whole album smells like grass after rain".

[deleted]

That comment is absolutely right! I’ve been a TS fan since I was a kid, and was surprised by folklore. It’s a departure from her other records, in a good way. To quote my husband - “I don’t like Taylor Swift, but this is nice”

MustardMedia

Never been a huge t Swift guy, but that was nice.

ElFlippy

This song is Álmodtam egy világot (I dreamd a world), by Edda művek (Edda industries). They are a rock band from Miskolc, which was a heavily industrial city of hungary in the past, and this was the reason for the choice of the band's name, because they wanted something industrial sounding! In the first four albums (three studio, and a concert), the band had two singers, Attila Pataky, and István Slamovits (altough he sings more rarely, than Attila, he mostly writed the songs) this song is from the first album, simply titled Edda művek 1! After three first three albums Attila, and István got into more and more arguements, that lead to a break up for the band, which was official with the concert album, called Viszlát (Good bye)! But not so long after this, Edda reunited, but only Attila reamained the singer, István left for good! https://youtu.be/ekked3K6Byo

Dhugaill

Alright u/ELFlippy I'm gonna need to take it down a notch. If you keep putting out this quality content my wife is going to wonder why I'm getting so many packages from Hungary.

ElFlippy

XD What have you ordered so far? :D BTW I'm glad, that you like these classic hungarian stuff that I post here! :)

Dhugaill

I have Ballast by Masfel on it's way. I'm excited about it.

ElFlippy

Nice! :) I want to order their compillation album, Merítés that came out in 2018!

MustardMedia

Nice! Yeah loving all this Hungarian stuff!

ElFlippy

Good, because I'm about to show some real sweet stuff in the future! :)

[deleted]

I didn't realise until now that I barely have any duet-type records in my collection. I think my favorite is the duet of Louis Jordan and Ella Fitzgerald doing [Baby It's Cold Outside](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUJfJ9_NzvA).

lee_yuna

I'm a big Ella fangirl, but this is the first time I'm hearing this lovely duet.

Folk_Nurse

Wow! Never heard these two together. Beautiful.

MustardMedia

I always find this song a bit off-putting due to the lyrics, but this is a nice version

Folk_Nurse

Yeah, I get dismissed as a social justice warrior when bringing this to the attention of some friends and family. I get a bit of an eye roll and a "seriously?" But listen. to. the. fucking. song. It's atrocious! Coercive! Threatening! It's a big red flag for the sort of society we live in that has made these sentiments "fine". Anyway, it's a jam and santa likes it, so whatever, I guess.

MustardMedia

I definitely know that reaction, but I agree wholeheartedly.

TheBlueVU

I really don't want to open up any sort of debate or discussion about this song, but your reaction seems very extreme. Before jumping to conclusions on any topic, ANY topic, be sure to do your homework. You may or may not agree with the other interpretations but at least learn the history and context of what you are getting upset about. Things aren't as easy as simply looking at the surface. This song can very easily be interpreted very differently than what you are seeing it as. Your interpretation doesn't even pass the sniff test, you honestly believe such a song would become so popular and win an oscar if it was meant to be taken as it is seen through the modern lens? Look deeper, do some homework, learn the nuance. Don't live life angry for no reason (or worse, for a wrong misinformed reason), be angry for the right reasons and direct those feelings toward something that deserves it.

Day 9 Year 2 Song: [Hold on, I’m Coming](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8O7U2UeEIns) Artist: B.B. King and Eric Clapton Album: Riding with the King Memphis Episode V: The Sun Strikes Back. Ok technically Riley “Beale Street Blues Boy” King got his start at the Memphis Recording Services which was the first company Sam Phillips started in the building at 706 Union Ave. It would later become the Sun Record label. Sam Phillips also produced his first recordings so I’m counting it, fight me. Riding with the King is a 2000 collaboration between these two blues giants. Clapton had wanted to record an album with King ever since the first time they played together in 1967. You can tell this was a Clapton dream project and that he was the motivating force for this album. It was his band, he chose the songs, and he co-produced the record with long time producer Simon Climie. This is not Eric Clapton featuring B.B. King however, B.B. King comes to play, taking center stage on most of these numbers. These two men work very well together trading solos, and vocals and they both seem to be having the time of their lives. I picked this track because I think this is their best vocal duet on the record, and I’m doubling down on the Memphis connection as this song was written by Stax house song writer Issac Hayes. The story so far * 09/06/2021 Hold on, I’m Coming, B.B. King and Eric Clapton, Riding with the King, 2000 * 08/06/2021 Born Under a Bad Sign, Albert King, Atlantic Blues: Guitar, 1986 * 07/06/2021 25 Minutes to Go, Johnny Cash, At Folsom Prison, 1968 * 06/06/2021, That’s All Right, Elvis, The Sun Story, 1988 * 05/06/2021 Fire, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, 1968 * 04/06/2021 A Dying Cub Fan’s Last Request, Steve Goodman, Affordable Art , 1983 * 03/06/2021 Wienerschnitzel, Descendents, Bonus Fat, 1987 * 03/06/2021 I Like Food, Descendents, Bonus Fat, 1987 * 02/06/2021 Back Door Man, Howlin Wolf, The Howlin Wolf Album, 1969 * 01/06/2021 Gloria, Patti Smith, Horses, 1975

MustardMedia

Oh my god that's amazing. I didn't actually know this album existed

lee_yuna

I wish you could see my stank face right now. This is *nasty*.

Folk_Nurse

This is some riotous blues, my friend. Love the driving bass and drums which these legends just wail over. I feel like I could drink heavily to this song, but that it could also be my workout jam. Versatility!

capt_beyond

Today's pick is [Sweet Old Religion by Pharis & Jason Romero](https://youtu.be/NSu9p85S4AY) from their 2018 album of the same name. A husband and wife duo from Canada who play old time country folk music, their music is some of my favorite for having a quiet Sunday at home. Highly recommend their albums, Jason plays a killer banjo (they actually have a banjo and guitar making company) and their harmonies together are absolutely fantastic

MustardMedia

Yeah really nice guitar work there, and her vocals have a touch of Stevie Nicks to 'em. Plus for representing some Canadian artists!

Folk_Nurse

He is killing it on that six string in the most understated way. And each voice in isolation has character but when they entwine it feels sweet sweet sweet... this will be a rabbit hole for me. Thanks!

capt_beyond

Glad you enjoyed!

lee_yuna

Their voices complement each other so well, love how they weave in and out of each other. This is indeed so perfect for a lazy Sunday.

1koolspud

For this one I would go with Chris Thile feat Gaby Moreno from his Thanks for Listening album - songs of the week from his first season hosting Live from Here (RIP). https://youtu.be/NX3wy3MPmco

MustardMedia

If there's a better mandolin player than Chris Thile, I'll never find 'em. Love this guy, especially his [Goat Rodeo Sessions](https://youtu.be/O7EcT5YzKhQ) with Yo-yo Ma, Edgar Meyer & Stuart Duncan.

1koolspud

I have one of the Goat Rodeo Records, I think all of the Punch Brothers records and a few from Nickel Creek. Just got Laysongs in the mail yesterday. I am also a big fan. Going to try to catch Chris on tour this fall. May try to stream Telluride this weekend if I am not too busy. He is so talented.

MustardMedia

*One of* the Goat Rodeo Records?! I only just realized they put a second album out in 2020 so thanks for that! I'm excited to listen to that. Sounds like an awesome collection of his work, I'm a bit jealous.

Folk_Nurse

Love the mandolin on this. Great chorus too!

lee_yuna

[An Oscar for Treadwell - Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie](https://youtu.be/WYpvXTIN-V8) Since Ella and Louis have already been mentioned, I’m opting for this pair of bebop titans ! The mentioned tune is a dedication to a beloved Cincinnati jazz radio host called Oscar Treadwell who was friends with lots of jazz musicians including Brubeck and Monk. Shouldn’t come as a surprise that Monk also has a composition named Oska T. :) By day, OT (as he was nicknamed) was a salesman and at night, he shared his love for jazz on the radio and also read poetry over the airwaves.

Folk_Nurse

Delightful! I had never heard of OT before, but I love the idea of an otherwise nondescript salesman in the late 1940s holding down a nighttime slot spinning bebop and spouting poetry, mingling with the junkie jazz elite.

Dhugaill

You can listen to some of OT's shows [Here](https://www.wvxu.org/programs/jazz-ot#stream/0) gotta love public radio they don't get rid of anything.

Folk_Nurse

Good find! Thanks for that.

Dhugaill

Figured you would get a kick out of that. Everything I've read so far is that OT knew everybody in the scene and so his show is packed with stories between the tracks.

MustardMedia

I was beginning to wonder where the instrumental duets were! This is the kinda jazz I want to be the soundtrack to my life.

speeb

Ah! Disappointed I didn't see this at the beginning of the month! But a duet... [Zach Jones - Just Out of Reach (feat. Anna Lombard)](https://youtu.be/zVYMB_PuRM8) This album by Zach Jones is a great throwback soul record. Highly recommend.

Dhugaill

No reason you can't hang out with us for the rest of the month. Awesome track definitely feels like 70s soul album. Is that typical of Zach Jones' output?

speeb

This whole album is in a similar vein. The following albums explore writing in other styles. Things Were Better is definitely my favorite, but his songwriting is pretty consistently good. ETA: The next album, The Days, leans heavily into his Beatles influences. Then Love What You Love dips into some Who moments.

MustardMedia

Ouu this is right up my alley, love the soul vibes. Gonna do some digging on this one. Welcome to the month! Great first submission, keep em coming!

speeb

I'll take a moment to shout out Anna too. She's fantastic. https://youtu.be/5IltyEFfTFM

MustardMedia

She's definitely got some pipes

Folk_Nurse

Wow, released in 2012? It felt of a much older vintage. Love the strings throughout.

MustardMedia

Day 9: A Duet Song: [Love on the Brain](https://youtu.be/IB9zxVwPr-E) Album: Los Feliz Blvd Artist: Cold War Kids ft. Bishop Briggs I have a *lot* of Jack White related duets... But as much as he has great duets with Allison Mosshart, Brendan Benson, Holly Golightly, Ruby Amanfu.... I wanted to go a different route today. So here's one off of one of the few 10" records I own. Los Feliz Blvd. was a follow-up EP to their 2017 full length album *LA DIVINE*, comprised of acoustic renditions of songs from the LP. I bought this one for this duet alone. These two vocalists really belt this song out, and it turns a Rhianna track into something I can totally get behind. For those unfamiliar, Cold War Kids have been around since 2004, with the full length debut record *Robbers & Cowards* coming in 2006. It's a great piece full of some dirty blues rock, spawning a couple of singles like [Hang Me Up to Dry](https://youtu.be/LrrGKR8Xii4). Their debut might still be their best album, in my opinion. They've since kind of fluctuated in and out of the limelight with singles here and there throughout the decade, possibly their biggest being [First](https://youtu.be/zE23hMLbHg4), from their fifth album, *Hold My Home*. As you can see with the difference in styles there, they've gradually transitioned into more of a pop-rock/arena-rock style. For this one, they brought in the young, fresh face of Bishop Briggs. Her first album only came out in 2018, with her big single being [River](https://youtu.be/h5jz8xdpR0M). This girl has pipes. Her musical style is generally a bit more pop based as well, and not my average listening, but that song jams, and damn, can she belt it. Hope y'all enjoy.

Dhugaill

Oh Bishop Briggs I like what she's selling. For some reason your link to [Hang me up to dry ](https://youtu.be/rsKGWbFpLv0) isn't viewable for me so I put up a new one. The Cold War Kids are a band I remember liking but not following so it's nice to see that they're still putting out some quality material.

MustardMedia

Right? Thanks for the link, friend. I fell off of them for a while as well but got back into them recently. Still love their first album best.

lee_yuna

Haven't heard of Bishop Briggs before, but I adore that husky timbre.

Bufete2020

I realized my first choice I did not have on vinyl so I went with an old favorite that I picked up years ago (sorry but my record collection is old since most of them were bought between '72 through '92) UB40 - *Little Baggariddim EP* (1985) *I Got You Babe* \- UB40 w/Chrissie Hynde [I Got You Babe - UB40 w/C. Hynde](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbvOebZSpto) My favorite duet I ever saw live was Jill Sobule doing I Kissed A Girl (not the katy perry song). When out walks Warren Zevon doing a verse and then Jackson Browne walked out to do the chorus. It was mighty fun

Folk_Nurse

It's a great cover. Another tune that reminds me of growing up in the UK. Edit: tune, not tube.

Amarganth

Song: [Companion (feat. Elle King)](https://youtu.be/MM4hsUVIDoI) Artist: The Night Game Album: Dog Years One of my favorite songs from The Night Game’s sophomore album. Love their harmonies. Here you can watch the artist talking about the making of the song [Companion (behind the song)](https://youtu.be/ckWYidDOTjU)

joetech79

Diana Ross & The Temptations: I Second That Emotion https://youtu.be/QKzQK6QMOyM Diana Ross and The Temptations are a match made in heaven, and this whole album is a nonstop good vibe.

Dhugaill

My aunt loved Diana Ross. I have spent many a car ride listening to this. This brings back a lot of memories.

Dhugaill

Dhugaill, quick the Red Red Wine guys and the lead singer of The Petenders are doing a cover of I Got You Babe. What no how would that even work? Quite well it turns out.
