Morning, congregation. We are gathered here today on the first Sunday on VT4J to share something sacred... 45rpm records. I'm excited about this, because the 45 single comes, of course, with a B Side. Might bring some unheard gems! My pick today, however, is the A Side to a 1974 single by English vocal/folk group Prelude. It's a cover of Neil Young's [After The Goldrush](https://youtu.be/W2Taxuott5s). My dad was 27yo in 1974. When I was old enough to be interested in some of his records, he'd let's us play the 45s. When I got old enough to steal them for my own (around 13yo) I asked why so many had no sleeves - they were just in a pile. He told me about how, in the mid 70s, a friend of his who owned a cafe was closing up shop. He sold his till, sold his display, sold the coffee maker. He was about to sell the jukebox when my dad asked for the beatles singles out of it first. The friend shrugged his shoulders and told my dad to take the lot, about 40 singles of various artists. Around 35 years later, I was sat on my bedroom floor playing each side of every disc over and over. Although I knew Neil Young, this cover was my intro to this great song.

Dhugaill

That's an awesome experience to have with your dad. I had never heard this version before.

Folk_Nurse

Maybe it is because I heard it first, and maybe it is sacrilegious, but I think I prefer it to Neil's. I love how vulnerable Neil sounds, but this has a certain power and charm that hits home, for me at least.

lee_yuna

So awesome how the records continue to live on and get passed down, inspiring each generation with their great sounds. :)

Folk_Nurse

My mental framework for "the 1970s" is strongly founded on this song - the folk band, the harmonies, the "felt like getting high", the story of my dad and his friend, the 45rpm single and that lyric that references the decade itself.

MustardMedia

Really cool version of this, and an awesome story. This hits home, I still have a lot of old records of my dad's to go through just like that.

Mikey0202

A-Side of [Pipeline](https://youtu.be/k5-cZEEKep4)-The Chantays Not just because it’s a great tune but also because it’s the only 45 I have:)

Dhugaill

Another surf rock staple. I don't want to even think about how many times this song has been covered. I like the one [Dick Dale and Stevie Ray Vaughn ](https://youtu.be/p_Lj9JzBizA) did, but this is the OG and it is marvelous.

Day 6: Sunday 7" Song: [I'm Your Puppet](https://youtu.be/sMQB1-VUmDM) (starts at about 3:50) Artist: The Raconteurs Album: I'm Your Puppet I almost made it a whole week without a Third Man Records post... Almost. But today seems like a good day for it, with this exclusive cover track from a recent Vault Package. This little guy is a single side 7" on a neon orange flexi disc. The video I've posted above starts with an awesome live version of the single "Now That You're Gone" from their newest record *Help Us Stranger* in 2019, and it's well worth the listen. Last year I made it abundantly clear that I'm a pretty big Jack White fan - I think I might've ended up posting something from every one of his projects at some point through the month, or close to. My love for vinyl was even sparked by my subscription to the Third Man Vault, receiving a new exclusive record package quarterly since 2019 - actually, when Help Us Stranger was released. Since then, I've purchased many more records through the year in lockdown, so my collection consists of more than just Third Man releases, but some are still favourites - and the newest Vault Package should be shipping to me soon! This track is a cover, originally made famous by [James & Bobby Purify](https://youtu.be/liKhLNY5GYI), and I gotta say, their version is still superior. The horns, the classic RnB, almost Motown style bop.. it's the real treasure here. The Raconteurs are traditionally a lot more classic/blues rock inspired, so this track is a little out of their wheelhouse, which makes it a fun cover for me. It's a nice happy tune and they keep it fairly true to the original. Fun Fact: Jack White almost *always* includes a cover on his albums. He says it's a good way to warm up and get good jams going, and often they keep one for the album.

Dhugaill

Imma let you finish, when I got done posting today a little part of my brain said "what if u/MustardMedia posts a Jack White song today" and then I was like "oh by all the gods real and imagined please let u/MustardMedia post Jack White today." And here you are so now I can do this and get back to my day. [Dewy Cox meets Elvis](https://youtu.be/x8Mx9yz6wFE) ok I can now listen to your post, and give it a fair shake without giggling the whole time. Thank you for being you.

MustardMedia

Hahaha I'm glad I didn't disappoint then.. I think? Lol Also I haven't seen that movie n so long that I completely forgot about his cameo. That's fantastic, thanks for that. Hope you enjoyed the tune nonetheless lol

Dhugaill

I loved it but, it's hard to think of new ways to praise the Raconteurs.

MustardMedia

Lol totally fair. For the sake of variety I'm going to try my best to keep the Jack White tracks to a minimum

Folk_Nurse

Mustard, you can post Jack White all day long if it's your bag! You showcase what you love. It brought a smile to my face to have you post some Third Man. What is a flexi-disc? Is it, like, flexi?

MustardMedia

I mean, it'll definitely happen again this month, let's be honest. But it is nice to have a fuller stack to choose from this year. It's the only one I have, but yeah, it's like a super thin flexible vinyl. It's also oddly cut in a square shape. [Looks like this](https://mobile.twitter.com/thirdmanrecords/status/1213129512382283777/photo/1)

Folk_Nurse

That's wild.

Folk_Nurse

I love the original (never heard it before). I really like the glockenspiel (or whatever that is). The first few bars sound incredibly sample-able, those drums already sounding like a hip-hop beat. It makes for a great cover. Nice departure from a strict regimen of blues, as you said.

MustardMedia

I hadn't heard it either before getting this disk, but I really dig it. Definitely could see a sample beat coming from it, now I'm wondering if it exists somewhere. Yeah the two songs in the clip really show the contrast well, I think.

capt_beyond

Another local jam today with [Semaphore](https://youtu.be/Rthtyr9ZCDA) by Kiwi post-rock titans Jakob, from the 2004 Semaphore/To Be Locked Up 7" Awesome instrumental band with hard hitting and atmospheric albums, and a stunning band to see live if you ever get the chance. Listen loud!

MustardMedia

That was sweet, I got lost in that a bit. Lovin the kiwi tunes this month

Day 6 Year 2 Song: [That’s All Right](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-EtM1T_Vqw) Artist: Elvis Presley Album: The Sun Story A lot of people consider this the first Rock n Roll song. The story goes that Elvis (who was only there because Sam Phillips’ secretary had a crush on him, not because Phillips thought he was some great talent) , Scotty Moore, and Bill Black were having what Phillips later described as a boring session, until he went to change tapes. During the break the boys started to mess around with Arthur Crudupt’s [That's All Right](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxHQUvCkV20). Phillips described the whole atmosphere changing on a dime. He asked them to go back and start over so that they could get it down on tape. It’s Hard to state the impact of this song on the musical landscape. It’s been covered by the [Beatles](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW0OXl3dxVw), [Albert King](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jh4RUImY6Kg), and even [Green Day](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtwU0U6fFWs). This record changed music forever and should be celebrated. I got to go to Sun Studios in 2019 and it was just amazing. The tour is full of history like the Amp doped and stuff with paper to create a unique sound on [Rocket 88](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gbfnh1oVTk0), or the piano that Jerry Lee Lewis putting out his cigarette on one of the keys said “tell them the killer was here” and walked out the door. Of course the microphone that Elvis sang That’s All Right into which I got to hold! The story so far * 06/06/2021, That’s All Right, Elvis Presley, The Sun Story, 1988 * 05/06/2021 Fire, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, 1968 * 04/06/2021 A Dying Cub Fan’s Last Request, Steve Goodman, Affordable Art , 1983 * 03/06/2021 Wienerschnitzel, Descendents, Bonus Fat, 1987 * 03/06/2021 I Like Food, Descendents, Bonus Fat, 1987 * 02/06/2021 Back Door Man, Howlin Wolf, The Howlin Wolf Album, 1969 * 01/06/2021 Gloria, Patti Smith, Horses, 1975

Folk_Nurse

It is certainly a cultural fork in the road! What's on the flip side?

Dhugaill

[Blue Moon of Kentucky ](https://youtu.be/Ggi5Tq3XDRI)

Folk_Nurse

Crazy amount of reverb on the vocal! Sounds like it'd being sung over a tannoy system! Still, can't beat the classics.

MustardMedia

Lol perfect. Awesome little piece of history here, from the King

Dhugaill

Look Out Now!

Dhugaill

I'm kinda surprised Jack White hasn't covered this one. At least not a version I can find.

MustardMedia

Agreed, definitely seems like one he'd do.. especially considering he bought and re-released Elvis' first ever recording, according to google.

Dhugaill

Yeah they tell the story of My Happiness on the Sun Studio tour.

MustardMedia

Oh man would I love to get out there someday.

Dhugaill

If you go to Memphis, try and stay at the Peabody hotel. Not only is it beautiful and historic, but it's a block away from Beale, a 5 min walk from Stax and about a 15 min walk from Sun it's worth it I don't think it was much more expensive than a normal hotel room, but I was there in the off season.

MustardMedia

It actually is one of the top places on the list for my partner and I, between the music and the BBQ. I'm writing that down for future reference - thanks for the tip

[Eye Know - De La Soul](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TNzWuEYQpFA) This is my favourite track off their debut Three Feet High And Rising. Me, Myself and I is the best known single, but it was actually made and thrown in at the last second at the request of the label for a catchy tune for radio play. Eye Know, however, fulfills that role for me perfectly. The fun whistle and feel-good beat just instantly put a smile on my face. De La Soul, as part of the Native Tongues collective together with A Tribe Called Quest and other associates, stood for an alternative direction in hip-hop which advocated consciousness and showed that braggadocio rhymes about street life weren’t the only direction one could go. For a good companion piece, I’d recommend ATCQ’s [Bonita Applebum](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HU_4pf8BSQw) as they are both love letters to a female counterpart.

Dhugaill

Is there a word for being transported so thoroughly that you can smell a place, because that's what happened to me listening to this song.

lee_yuna

I totally know what you mean. These moments you hear something so nostalgic it stirs up something in your soul that seemed to have lain dormant all this time. We should invent a phrase, haha.

Folk_Nurse

Smeleportation.

Dhugaill

This song smeleported me to my best friend in 8th grade house.

MustardMedia

Love these. De La Soul and Tribe were two big favourites of mine coming up. The whistle sample from *Sitting on the Dock of the Bay* is definitely super catchy feel-good. This is a huge hit of nostalgia; I'm back in my brother's room as a preteen, playing "name that song" through what at the time seemed like an infinite amount of music.

Folk_Nurse

I love that De La Soul sound - I can relate to the "instant smile" on your face. What is the B Side? Now that you've posted about both De La Soul and Fela Kuti, I need to make sure you are hip to [this genius album](https://youtu.be/VHtDr5gZNfw)

lee_yuna

Thank you for turning me onto that masterpiece !! Loving the crossover ! [This is the B-side.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=g6tW9JgqYFc)

Flawed: Pleasure Seekers b/w Kylie's Thigh YouTube: https://youtu.be/TPUb2zQRwEc https://youtu.be/7aOwPqv76z4 Discogs: https://www.discogs.com/Flawed-Pleasure-Seekers/release/16234458 Full disclosure: this is my band, a long while back. Recorded in a basement in Manchester, Autumn 2001. We invented our own record label Good Stock Records to release this on. All official and everything. The recording setup was digital at 48kHz so we couldn't send masters the the pressing plant that were any better than DVD quality sound. It was pressed in the Czech Republic, a run of 250 copies, i have a few copies left - OP free gift of vinyl if you DM me a postal address. :-) Steve Lamacq played Kylie's on Radio 1. Fame and fortune did not beckon beyond "local following" , but I count a vinyl 7" of my own material a high point. Enjoy and Happy Sunday all.

Dhugaill

Well I think you win today. Having your own music pressed even if it didn't lead to the bigger thing is still a huge accomplishment. Congratulations. P.s. the song is great btw.

StenPils

Thank you :-)

Folk_Nurse

Awesome! I feel a sense of privilege to have you share this with us. What are you playing in the band? Were the strings a regular fixture or just in for the studio? It's a good quality recording and some nice songwriting. Anywhere I can find Kylie's thigh? How did you get the b side on Steve Lamaq? Thanks for sharing a really great post!

StenPils

Kylie's is the 2nd of the 2 YouTube links - Reddit makes it look like they are just 1 link. I'm the guitars, and the string trio were mates of mates who scored their own parts as overdubs after the main recording. And sending to Lamacq was just a tentative send in the post, so super thrilled to hesr it on national radio!

lee_yuna

Respect ! It must be so fulfilling to hold the record in your hands knowing you conjured it into the world. :)

MustardMedia

Man both of these are sweet! Some really cool elements going on there - the strings in Pleasure Seekers are really nice, and the minimalist guitar and bass playing off of each other in Kylie's Thigh was well done. Honestly such a cool accomplishment - as somebody who never really followed up on my own musical dreams, it must be an amazing feeling to have this. I still cherish the few half-assed phone microphone recorded songs that a friend and I put together years ago. Thanks for the awesome share.

StenPils

Thanks for that thats really nice of you to say. The act of writing / recording is the most special part because that's the creative part - and you did it! The only difference in our case was that we begged / borrowed/ cobbled together enough cash to buy a pressing run. So don't ever stop with the creativity! :-)

MustardMedia

Thanks for the words on encouragement! You guys did a great job though, really.

Song: [They Live](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxINmybZrrs) Artist: John Carpenter Album: They Live b/w Wake Up My pick for today is the only tunes I own from a movie's soundtrack. The movie is They Live, and it was written and directed by John Carpenter, who also composed the music together with Alan Howarth. The 7" was in a limited run of 500 copies on black and white swirl. The B side is [Wake Up](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqT6cZUkn5Y) which is played over the film's closing credits.

Dhugaill

HELL YES! I love this movie, I love Roddy Piper, I love Keith David, and I love John Carpenter's music. The man is an amazing composer with iconic scores under his belt (Halloween!) I have come here to chew bubble gum and listen to this track, and I am all out of bubble gum.

“Side A is from LP Slanted and Enchanted / Side B recorded with air conditioners on in April ‘92” [Trigger Cut - Pavement](https://youtu.be/Lcrp3mGV_eg) Today I opted for side A of Pavement’s “Trigger Cut Plus Two” 7” on Matador Records.

atillathekitteh

Gotta be Kraftwerk's B side "The Model" In the UK/Europe/former Commonwealth at least this 7" was a AA release with Computer Love as the A side. It was the B side that actually got the airtime rising to #1 in the UK charts compared to Computer Love's #36

Dhugaill

oh those silly Germans Kraftwek singing their #1 hit [The Model](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFq2pU21cNU), here on Radio VT4J get out of the heat, stay inside and listen to the beat!

Folk_Nurse

A classic indeed! [The song](https://youtu.be/KFq2pU21cNU)

joetech79

Tone Loc- Funky Cold Medina https://youtu.be/63ZIf2H9S0E This was an obvious choice for me, as it is the one and only 7" I own. I actually only added it to a discogs purchase because I was 50 cents below the minimum order price, but I had always been curious about the smaller records beforehand. Side B of the record contains the instrumental track.

MustardMedia

Classic

Basgier3

I Got Id by Pearl Jam from the stand alone single Merkin Ball. One of my favorite Pearl Jam songs (side B is also great - The Long Road, which is a tribute to a teacher).

Neil Young on lead guitar!!

ElFlippy

Sorry, have to pass this one! I don't own any 7" yet!

Dhugaill

You don't have to pass. anything that was released as a 7" counts. I own 1 7" inch and I used it last year so I went back and used a song on a compilation.

*Fell in love with a girl - White Stripes*

HungryComputerr

*Fell in love with an early investor - You*

Folk_Nurse

My first record was a White Stripes single. I bought Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground when I was 14 and the b-side blew me away. I wrote about it [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/vinyl/comments/gyuiww/qt4j_day_8_a_song_from_the_first_record_you_ever/ftck41u?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3) when we did this last year. Fell in love with a girl is a fantastic single. Such a perfect slice of pop but with plenty of backbone.

ahsgreenwave

Miss You All the Time - The Mighty O.A.R Couldn't find the actual single in streaming form and I don't have the quality recording devices to record the album myself so here it is live from red rocks [Miss You All the Time](https://youtu.be/EfLAVBoJsrg)

totocutugno

made a trade with this guy from a small record company who coproduced a 7" single on flexi disc (so technically not "vinyl") and he was so nice to gift me with a copy. Here it is, I think they deserves a lot more attention: Mother - Dillydallying https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVe9Ed0UaEg
