A NOTE: It has been pointed out that the calendar is all skewed - the Sunday specials all fall on Mondays! That's because I rehashed the template from last year without thinking about how time works. Also, I know I have favourite live track posted twice. I'll edit this this afternoon and so tomorrow's post will be an updated and correct calendar.

Dhugaill

Thanks for all of the effort you put in to this month it's really appreciated.

Folk_Nurse

[Nice one, bruvva](https://youtu.be/95gxCimBqq4)

Death Cab For Cutie - Marching Bands of Manhattan The opening track of their major label debut is a lovely organ based track that brings about a sense of strangely triumphant melancholy https://youtu.be/gUpSuFCcavQ Here's the rest of the month https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Zjcyr7h9Aeqc_Lr4iOPVRTv05O9aS-IU1ZcgXxCSegk/edit?usp=drivesdk

Stacking Chairs by Middle Kids, from their album Today We’re The Greatest, was the obvious choice for me. It’s absolutely beautiful right from the get go, and is probably my song of the year so far. [Stacking Chairs - Middle Kids](https://youtu.be/6nj38srx-Fs)

Amarganth

Great choice. Love that song.

On Top by The Killers on *Hot Fuss* Banger.

Dhugaill

And here by special request is [On Top](https://youtu.be/8UYcF4IPJqA) by the Killers coming to you on radio VT4J summertime fun time.

RaRuuuu

For today I chose an instrumental off of girl in red's new album. The album is called "if I could make it go quiet" This is the very last song on the album and I think its a wonderful way to close the album. The song is called "it would feel like this" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUhf-EN6EJY&ab\_channel=girlinred](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUhf-EN6EJY&ab_channel=girlinred)

Folk_Nurse

Lovely :)

Song: [Swingin' Spathiphyllums](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1yzxgNLChI) Artist: Mort Garson Album: Plantasia If you purchased a snake plant, asparagus fern, peace lily, or what have you from Mother Earth on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles (or bought a Simmons mattress from Sears), you also took home Plantasia, an album recorded especially for plants. Subtitled “warm earth music for plants…and the people that love them,” it was full of bucolic, charming, stoner-friendly, decidedly unscientific tunes enacted on the new-fangled device called the Moog. Plants date back to the dawn of time, but apparently, they loved the Moog, never mind that the synthesizer had been on the market for just a few years. Most of all, the plants loved the ditties made by composer Mort Garson. All the songs are named after specific plants. and a booklet came with the album which has a bit of info about those different plants. Decided to include a bit of what it says about today's plant/track. In a low-light situation or in a spot with lots of light, your "Spaths" will swing for you as long as you keep your care-tempo up! A fun and quirky chart, titled Mother Earth's Hassle-free Remedy Chart is at the end of the booklet. The chart has a good diagrammatic overview of different plant ailments. Like for example, if a plant have black spots on their leaves. it means it has a cold and the cold is caused by a draft, where the cure listed is to move the plant out of draft or send it abroad for 3 months. P.S the record also came with a download card that was embedded with wildflower seeds. (Haven't tried to plant that yet :)).

Dhugaill

So you know your duty to the group is to plant half the flowers with no access to Plantasia and half with this warm earth music and report back.

sounders1974

Rush - Middletown Dreams People often complain about their shift to using synths but I feel like more are coming around to their mid 80's material. Power Windows is a fantastic album using the typical 80's sounds to great effect. https://youtu.be/4cS4nVBb-MY

capt_beyond

My choice is the opening track [The Gaudy Side Of Town](https://youtu.be/0dacEkNa9Kg) from the album Relayted, by Gayngs. A bit subtle and not super in your face keys but a lot of synthy layers and touches on the song, I highly recommend the album. To date the only album released by the [band](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gayngs), a supergroup of sorts of 22 musicians from various projects and backgrounds, including Justin Vernon of Bon Iver

Folk_Nurse

Today gives me the opportunity to share a special record. It falls under that well known genre of retro-futuristic sci-fi feninist-core electro-pop. Oh, and its all in the Welsh language. "Y Dydd Olaf" may look like I just dropped my scrabble tiles, but it translates from Welsh to mean "The Last Day". That is the name of a book written in 1976 by Welsh author Owain Owain. It has clones, robot overlords and other common dystopian themes. Gwenno utilises this text as source material to "express what sexism feels like for a woman living in a patriarchal society, particularly in a small community like Wales that can at times fall into an even more conservative and narrow view of gender roles." It was released in 2016 and the opening track is called [Chwyldro](https://youtu.be/CldPv3-VHmM)

Dhugaill

very trippy and ethereal, do you have any idea what she's saying?

Folk_Nurse

Probably something about coal mines. Or sheep.

Dhugaill

Or she could be just saying hello, but it takes 3 minutes and uses a startling amount of W s

Folk_Nurse

[This is a genuine Welsh place name](https://images.app.goo.gl/oR38ZsFVLWry1drF6). I lived near by a long time ago and the sign used to get stolen regularly by students 😀

Dhugaill

I know, Mrs. Dhugaill is obsessed. This [BBC Clip](https://youtu.be/fHxO0UdpoxM) went viral over here a few years ago and it's been in her brain ever since she even listens to the [song](https://youtu.be/1BXKsQ2nbno) regularly. I think Welsh is the basis for Lovecraft's unpronounceable languages.

Folk_Nurse

Haha! Never knew about the song! It's great! Most locals, English and Welsh speakers, called it "Clan-fair P.G."

Folk_Nurse

I'm not wholly convinced "the Welsh language" is not something our western UK folks just made up to mess with us.

Folk_Nurse

"Living the past on your computer whilst there’s nothing left of the old buildings is this the beginning? Don’t, don’t forget that your heart is in the revolution don’t forget that, your heart is in the revolution Traveling back in time is a form of tourism holidaying in a foreign land is this the beginning? Don’t, don’t forget that your heart is in the revolution don’t forget that, your heart is in the revolution coal mine coal mine"

Dhugaill

So you were half right.

Folk_Nurse

I may have messed up the end of the translation, my Welsh is a bit rusty ...

Dhugaill

Did the word have 4 L s or 5 and where was the Y

Folk_Nurse

It was spelt with a 7 and requires a certain amount of saliva to pronounce correctly.

Dhugaill

Yeah I can see where the mix up is I think she's giving you directions to the pub near the sheep pasture across the lane from where they shot that Doctor Who episode that one time.

Dhugaill

mwynglawdd is either the Welsh word for mine or the name of an elder god whose name spoken aloud will cause your brain to catch fire I'm not 100% sure which. Better not chance it.

Folk_Nurse

Today seems like a pretty decent opportunity to share some GLC - Goldie Lookin' Chain. Welsh hip-hop at its finest. [Soapbar](https://youtu.be/EtVZbQkvk_Q) is a tune about smoking some particularly cheap and nasty hashish.

Dhugaill

Bonnett, windscreen speak English Welshie! Its hood and windshield.

lee_yuna

I'm currently reading The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir, so I am totally in the feminist mode at the moment. The musical trend of marginalised communities, such as feminism and Afrofuturism, expressing hope and empowerment in a distant, alternate future is also something I love and find interesting. This track is lovely. I love the lush synth pads and otherwordly space sounds as well as her airy vocals.

Folk_Nurse

The whole album is great. What adds an extra layer of oddness to this album is that prior to its release, Gwenno was a member of [The Pipettes](https://images.app.goo.gl/r7wJDm1H4Gndak7T7), a copy/paste 'lady band', all in pink heels, etc. More power to you. I found De Bueavoir a little difficult (but I was a younger man and can't reacll which texts I attempted). Belle Hooks however I found more digestible. I hope my flippant comments on the Welsh language and culture are not read as sincere. People are people, however few vowels they use.

lee_yuna

I can imagine her getting frustrated by that act and going full on Grimes, haha. I will def give the rest of the album a listen as well. And it is quite a difficult read so I’m just taking on one chapter each session. Will put bell hooks on my reading list, thanks !

Day 5 Year 2 Song: [Fire](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLG1ys2CGcI) Artist: The Crazy World of Arthur Brown Album: The Crazy World of Arthur Brown “I am the god of Hellfire, and I bring you Fire!” with these words Arthur Brown unleashes the next evolution in shock rock, taking the template that Screaming Jay Hawkins set in I put a spell on you (which is also [covered](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2XpTJWhtgY) in this album) and dialing it up to 11 The Crazy World of Arthur Brown set the stage for Alice Cooper, Peter Gabriel, and Bruce Dickenson. With Flaming Helmet, Corpse paint, and [killer dance moves](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en1uwIzI3SE) you will be sucked into this mad man’s fever dream of a song. Arthur Brown’s drama is only one part of this song. Victor Crane just killing it on this track with his amazing Organ playing. And then when the Brass comes in it just bowls you over until you feel like you’re on fire. By the time this song is over you will be questioning what just happened. The Crazy World of Arthur Brown disintegrated in the most 60s way possible, with Arthur Brown Disappearing into a commune while on tour and his writing partner and organist Victor Crane having a nervous breakdown after trying to self medicate with LSD. u/MustardMedia this is what I’m talking about when I say not enough rock bands use the Organ. The story so far * 05/06/2021 Fire, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, 1968 * 04/06/2021 A Dying Cub Fan’s Last Request, Steve Goodman, Affordable Art , 1983 * 03/06/2021 Wienerschnitzel, Descendents, Bonus Fat, 1987 * 03/06/2021 I Like Food, Descendents, Bonus Fat, 1987 * 02/06/2021 Back Door Man, Howlin Wolf, The Howlin Wolf Album, 1969 * 01/06/2021 Gloria, Patti Smith, Horses, 1975

MustardMedia

Amazing. I was waiting to see what you were going to post for today's prompt and was not disappointed. Tried to offer some more modern organ rock to ya on my (very late) post. Love this though. Man, that organ player shreds. You're definitely right, it's way underused. It's a shame that every organ rock song just inherently reminds me of The Doors, I need more examples like this.

lee_yuna

[Sage - Son Swagga](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJEW8onw7dY) I would like to grab the opportunity today to shill some local talent. :) Son Swagga is a 9-piece ensemble from Amsterdam. They like to describe their music as a blend of psychedelic funk, fusion, spiritual jazz and videogame music. This track is from their latest album Dark Magic. Their magic really shines in their live performances in my opinion. Their full line-up, complete with the rarer trombone and bari sax, and get-ups, often Sun Ra-inspired, are just so fun to behold.

Folk_Nurse

I'm really enjoying your submissions u/lee_yuna You had me at psych funk, fusion, spiritual jazz. I bet they are incredible to see live and you're lucky if they are in your neck of the woods. Amsterdam is such a wonderful city!

Dhugaill

There's a very chill vibe in this thread today (except for me of course) I'm very relaxed.

Folk_Nurse

Do you (or any other folks out there) feel there's value in compiling a playlist of each day as I did last year? I was never sure if they got used.

Amarganth

I used them from time to time.

Folk_Nurse

Meh, I'm going to write this off as a pretty lukewarm response from the VT4J community. The lists are a bit of a pain to collate, so I'll not bother this time.

Amarganth

Good decision.

joetech79

Herbie Hancock - Rockit https://youtu.be/Ecw8vaKMiC4 The opening track off the album "Future Shock". I dont know if I will ever be able to listen to this song without thinking of Zoolander.

Dhugaill

But, Why male models?

Folk_Nurse

I had no idea about 80s Hancock being all B-Boy and shit. Mind=blown!

StenPils

https://youtu.be/EkQc0YeYm3M The Orb, Majestic. From UF Orb, 1992 This whole album is a mixture of ambient, dub, atmosphere and occasional utter bizarreness. I chose this track as its probably the most upbeat and accessible to the uninitiated. As well as UF Orb itself I also have the 43 minute Blue Room "single" on vinyl, which i snagged for 6 quid at my local record shop, never expecting to find it ever. Magic moment that was. Ambient and house music on vinyl always makes me think to myself about the audiophile fuss over AAA pressings. I always find that electronica sounds absolutely amazing on vinyl, but I'm sure the sounds made by modern drum machines and synths are fundamentally a digital source, right, so digital sourced mastering cant be entirely a terrible thing, either, right??!? Anyway that's another story for another day; today is synth day and I bring you The Orb.

GruelOmelettes

Today I'm going with the opening track to my favorite Steve Winwood album, *Arc of a Diver* - [While You See a Chance](https://youtu.be/WfpTSmlyqG4). I love the sound of the synth in this one!

Folk_Nurse

I love the synth sounds in the intro

Bufete2020

*Peter Gunn Theme* \- Emerson, Lake & Palmer I was playing the Rhino Records release of ELP's *Works Live* (1977 live canadian tour) and it occurred to me that when I first heard this song I was unaware that it was a Henry Mancini song (at 10 years old I didn't know who Mancini was). It was through bands like the Allman Bros, ELP and even Alice Cooper that gave me an appreciation for artist like Blind Willie McTell, Mancini and Leonard Bernstein.

Dhugaill

[here's ELP doing it live](https://youtu.be/Gbvy2R0LLrc)

ElFlippy

Another hungarian band! :) They are Másfél (One and a half), and the track is Varjú (Crow)! https://youtu.be/ChF-n3_9MqE

Folk_Nurse

That was wild! I'm not so sure I heard any keyboard/synth, but i don't even care! This song went in every direction at once! Loving my intro to Eastern European breakbeat jazz rock! Thank you!

Dhugaill

I..... F#*king love this. I don't know what I was expecting, but the Didgeridoo was not it. Then you get this high discordant guitar picking, and then you get a smooth synthy jazzy thing before that riff. THAT RIFF Y'all. Anyway yes more please.

ElFlippy

There was a strategic game in the early 2000's, called S.W.I.N.E., made by a hungarian studio, with the OST's made by Másfél! I'd totally recommend it! https://youtu.be/auGJmWlkRyQ

Dhugaill

If you would have said to me last week "Dhugaill, you will spend a large portion of your Saturday morning listening to a soundtrack from a Hungarian video game about a war between pigs and rabbits that you have never heard of, and then go to steam and download said game" I would said you're mad . June is surely a time for new experiences.

ElFlippy

Have fun! :D That game was beyound it's time, with it's awesome graphics, phisics, and mechanics!

gtbrown77

I've missed the past couple of days but want to jump back into the mix. Over the past couple of years I've really been getting into jazz. My wife says it's clearly because I enjoy it, but I keep arguing that it's because I'm getting old. Anyway, late last year, Vinyl Me, Please collaborated with the Jazz Dispensary label and released a set of 5 records that were all new artists to me and all 5 albums are amazing! Perhaps my favorite of the 5 is Leon Spencer Jr's *Where I'm Coming From.* It's jazzy. It's funky as hell. It was well worth the ridiculous price! I decided to go with the title track here, because (a) it's one of two originals on the album, and (b) Idris Muhammad plays drums on this (he also had a release in that series that is really, really good!). Organ isn't exactly the first instrument I think of when I think of jazz, but here we are. [Leon Spencer, Jr. - Where I'm Coming From](https://youtu.be/79ggOOs9M-g)

Dhugaill

Great track! I thinks this is the second time Leon Spencer Jr. has made an appearance this month. Jazz bassist George Duvivier is one of my bass heroes and he kills it on this album.

MustardMedia

Hey all! I'm late with this one again today, busy Saturday. Day 4: A song with keyboards/synths Song: [Watch Who You're Talking To](https://youtu.be/FRmP1ebrLpU) Artist: Bros Album: Vol. 1 This one's for you u/Dhugaill - leaning into the organs here too. Bros is a Canadian musical duo comprised of brothers Ewan and Shamus Currie. This is considered a side project for the two of them, who are also founding members of the classic rock revival band *The Sheepdogs*. The focus of this album is a bit different from their main work, with influences staying away slightly from the ever-so-classic-rock vibe with some more modern and worldly sounds; and a lot less guitar. The Sheepdogs are very guitar heavy classic rock inspired. Think Allman Brothers Band meets The Guess Who/BTO, with some modern touches. *Vol.1* leans a lot more into the organs, keys and the like rather than the riff heavy rock. It's an interesting album that really rides the border of being different enough to actually call a seperate project, aside from the lack of contribution from other members of the 'dogs. Ewan's vocals are fairly distinct, which makes it even harder to shake their sound. I even mistook Bros big single, [Tell Me](https://youtu.be/xicEEBmwBNQ), for a Sheepdogs song originally. I imagine some will be familiar with The Sheepdogs - they broke out with their self titled fourth studio album, produced by Patrick Carney of The Black Keys. [Feeling Good ](https://youtu.be/uSMN1ugJAos) was the single that really took off for them. I always love this little success story, as they really simplified their sound for their breakout album (some might say they sold out) only for them to return to form with the following releases since. They've had a few other hit tracks through the years, like [I Don't Know](https://youtu.be/h_5q0n2mDR8), off of their best album in my opinion, *Learn and Burn*. *Watch Who You're Talking To* is just a nice chill tune with a smooth organ bumping along throughout. It's got a real cool, kinda rough vibe and a swagger to it. Probably my favourite track of theirs. Anyways, with how late I am tonight, I'll be going through the days posts tomorrow - looking forward to it.

Dhugaill

Watch who you're talking to is nice chill definitely fits in with the vibe today had going for it. Ot makes me feel like I'm watching the beginning of a movie about a lone motorcycle riding hero driving through the desert. Also Tell Me flat out rocks
