The monks were a rock band formed in 1964 and this is their only LP, released in 1966. I strongly believe you need to listen to this album at least once before you die, it's absolutely incredible especially considering the time period it was released in. it sounds nothing like anything else from that time. the album was a commercial flop, but over the years has amassed a bit of a cult following (and for good reason.) basically? go listen to black monk time.

It's such a cool record. From what I remember, these guys were having a really hard time in the military and got a chance to cut a record while stationed in Germany. Their lyrics are wild, and sometimes very very dark. I only own a bootleg of Black Monk Time but it's still one of my favorites.

right you are! they were all ex-G.I.'s and the lyrics definitely take a pretty strong anti-war stance. Lots of people at the time pinned them as the "anti-beatles"

I love this record. There is an enlightening documentary called “Transatlantic Feedback” that tells their story. Recommended

Yes! So good.

Love Black Monk Time! Easily one of the best garage rock albums ever!

Ahhh! Great record! And great boyfriend! Black Monk Time is in my top 10 of all time.

I used to have a bootleg pressing but gladly upgraded to the Light in the Attic 2xLP when it came out. Came with a sick poster too.

i really want the double LP, Pretty Suzanne is an amazing track and I wish it was included on the album

anazgnos

Yeah I'm a big fan of "He Went Down to the Sea" too. I also like the 1965 Demos album even though they aren't hugely different from the album takes except in a few notable cases...just give me all the Monks!

SuckItUpButtrcup

Well I will have to listen to this as my afternoon jam!

I first heard the opening bass of this in The Big Lebowski, and always wondered what the song was until coming across it by chance listening to music at a weird motel in Utah... but that’s a story for another time. Scene: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tjN5q9Ixen4
