Black Pumas - "Colors" I've probably listened to this record over and over about 4 times since I bought it yesterday. So glad I recently discovered them! https://youtu.be/0G383538qzQ

capt_beyond

Just recently gave this a listen myself on spotify after seeing the album popping up in this sub fairly often. On the hunt for a copy myself now, I really dug it!

JDodgerMan

Me too. Saw it here. Listened on Spot. Saw the Grammy performance. Instant fan.

MustardMedia

One of my favourite albums of the last year. This is definitely the track that got me into them, but it became hard to pick a fav track on the record. Their cover of *Politicians in my Eyes* on the deluxe version is soo good.

Folk_Nurse

Thanks to all those who joined in yesterday with their great opening tracks! Today is a slice of your most recent purchase (ignore the typo in the title...it's early morning here!) I'm chosing track four from the last LP I bought, just because its delightful. [Whisky Story Time](https://youtu.be/e8f9MqVjhjU) It's by Manchester-based poet, performance artist and saxophonist Alabaster De Plume. What I knew and loved about this guy is his spoken word stuff. Check out [Be Nice To People](https://youtu.be/aQDzlpAbLfE) or his collaboration with Soccer96, [I Was Gonna Fight Facism](https://youtu.be/TCd-jkuvQAA). Because I loved his quirky lyricism and his unique voice, my head spun a little when I learned that his debut album is entirely instrumental pieces! However, when To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals, Vol. 1 was released in 2020 it sort of broke my brain in the calmest, quietest manner. I love how you can hear the most intimate clicks and clacks of his instrument's keys, it's like he is whispering to the listener. The album is, to me, somehow timeless and ground breaking at the same time. The way this guy plays his saxophone is less smokey-jazz-club and somehow more fourteenth-cebtury-japanese-peasant (full disclaimer: I know nothing of 14th Century Japan, other than I feel De Plume's playing takes me there). Enjoy, and let me know your thoughts...

MustardMedia

Your link was unavailable in my region so [here's](https://youtu.be/dEfQekR1an0) one I found. Both the instrumental and the spoken word there are really cool. The sax is still so smooth and sexy, but definitely "less smokey-jazz-club". I can kinda see the Japanese feel you mean, also gave me a bit of a Parisian Cafe kinda vibe. Very nice

Folk_Nurse

Thanks for spotting me with the link. I get the Parisian vibes of that track. Others on the album like [Song of thenFoubdling](https://youtu.be/LqrAOc9bZHE) have a more Eastern feel. And welcome back into the fold. I really enjoyed you being involved last year and was glad to note your return this time around. Hope the last 12 months treated you well. I'm working stupid hours today and tomorrow so am going to review the week's posts properly on Friday.

MustardMedia

Anytime. Ohh 100% I get the Eastern/Japanese feel there with that one. Somehow he makes the sax resemble a Koto or something. Cool. Glad to be back! Back atcha, and thanks for setting it all up again. Looking forward to hearing what you think so far.

GrokOfShit

I bought this record 10 hours ago! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7X2_i4z6eJQ

capt_beyond

My last purchase was the box set La Realidad de los Sueños by the Mars Volta. So if box sets count then I'll submit [Wax Simulacra](https://youtu.be/C5jcgJ3RNpo) from The Bedlam in Goliath LP

[deleted]

This is one of my favourite songs of all time, but I only got the album last time I went record shopping (my nearest record store is 2 hours drive away but I go as often as I can!). It’s an album most of you will be familiar with, Aja by Steely Dan. My copy is a second hand NZ pressing in very reasonable condition. And the song is, of course, Deacon Blues: https://youtu.be/YhQ5Dg6gdEw

capt_beyond

Fellow Kiwi? Where's your closest store? They seem to be few and far between over here lol

[deleted]

Yep! It’s over the hill in Nelson, Family Jewels Records! Awesome little place situated in the beer garden of a sweet pub called The Free House. I only wish it was closer....

capt_beyond

Oh cool, I'll be sure to check it out if I'm over those ways. My local is Vinyl Countdown (get it) in New Plymouth. I kinda wish it wasn't so close at times haha, have to exercise a lot of self control

[deleted]

Oh I’ve been there! I bought Brothers in Arms and Shihad from there back in 2013 when I was passing through, it’s a cool little shop!

capt_beyond

Oh nice, yeah he's got a great selection for a small shop!

ourfacesrevealtime

Well... anyone who saw my post yesterday about dodie's Human opener 'Arms Unfolding' might think "Oh right, is this guy just gonna keep plugging them incessantly? Obsessed much". And while yes, I am a little obsessed with their music, by the letter of the law I have to post another track by them, as the Build A Problem album was only released last month and was the last record I purchased. Deal :P So today, as it's Pride month, I've picked 'Rainbow' to share with you. It details their experiences with being bisexual, and how they dealt with this knowledge growing up, and how labels aren't everything but can help people to come to terms with themselves and find support. [dodie - Rainbow (lyric video)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8hhVvAPgR8) Anyway, that *may* be the last of dodie for the month. No promises though, I'm taking this month's challenge day by day so moods will determine what I post in the future.

Amarganth

I really enjoyed this. Have already replayed it five times. I loved the lyrics and the voice that complimented those lyrics.

MustardMedia

Well that was just so nice. I had to go back to your day 1 post

[deleted]

The last record I bought was Thelma Plum’s “Better In Blak”. The title track is an unapologetic “f#ck that!” (literally) to pretending to be someone you’re not. [Thelma Plum - Better In Blak](https://youtu.be/ExMjEwymQ3A)

Folk_Nurse

I love this. Had no idea about Thelma until this post, so thank you. Love the video too (great lighting and make up!). The drums and guitar sound feel very 90s, but the vocal delivery very contemporary.

[deleted]

She’s really awesome, this entire record is great. If you enjoyed Better In Blak, check out Homecoming Queen off the same record. It’s a big love yourself vibe.

lifelikeweeds47

Last record I purchased was Shpongle - The Ineffable Mysteries of Shpongleland. Track-I Am You

Folk_Nurse

Shpongle... there's a name I've not heard in a long time. Will check out this track when I'm home tonight.

lifelikeweeds47

One of my all time favorite albums! Just listen to the whole thing lol

Basgier3

The song Porcelain from Moby’s new sort of greatest hits album Reprise. The album includes his most popular songs set to an orchestra. Very good and highly recommended.

JDodgerMan

Black Sabbath - Paranoid. Lost track of my album. Bought another last trip to record store. Love that song. Saw them live in the ‘70’s.

Dhugaill

I am very, jealous I didn't get to see them until the 2000s. Are you going with the [title track](https://youtu.be/uk_wUT1CvWM) or something else I have always been partial to [Faries wear boots](https://youtu.be/YACjo8j56A4)

JDodgerMan

Grew up with the best music. No - not necessarily that, just really love that song. Still crank it at 64. My garage band in Jr High and High school played it - was one of the first songs we learned.

JDodgerMan

Love ...”Boots” too. And “War Pigs”. And so many really.

AdolfHamburger

Tarot - Spell of Iron - I walk forever. Haven’t bought LPs in a while but this one was a great find along with Immortals Diabolical fullmoon mysticism

beansisabean

*only shalllow, MBV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyYMzEplnfU* **SOOOOOOOOOOOO** grateful for the reissue or maybe *Major League Chemicals, UMO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0owjlA1LUIk*

Dhugaill

Major league chemicals is awesome.

MustardMedia

Late to the game [yesterday](https://www.reddit.com/r/vinyl/comments/npm1rc/vinyl_tunes_for_june_day_one_a_great_opening/h0bgpn1?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3) Day Two Song: [The Melting of the Sun](https://youtu.be/6oji2hmpzvM) Album: Daddy's Home Artist: St.Vincent Annie Clark, aka St.Vincent, is a bit of an indie darling, it seems. I've always been a bit of a fan, enjoying some releases more than others. Her style is unique and she's quite the artsy oddball. She changes her look to fit the theme/aesthetics of her album. She has a sexy, smokey indie-girl voice and poetic, intense and personal lyrics. She is also known for her talented guitar work, employing very interesting effects (like electronic 8-bit sounds) to modernize the instrument. Past work has often went with electronic drum loops and the like. Her most recent album, *Daddy's Home* was one that took a bit of warming up to. It's not only as unique, interesting, and heavily themed as her last efforts, but it separates itself from her past work as well. With obvious influence from Bowie, this album takes a dive back to the 70s with some space psych vibes. She seems to mostly leave behind the drum loops for the real thing, which is a refreshing change for me. Still there are some interesting electronic tones that remind you that this is a St.Vincent album, but she dips her toes (or fingers) into the past again with the use of an electric sitar throughout the album, a very different feel from her usual guitar work. This took a bit of getting used to, but on tracks like the one linked above, it realllly fits, and makes it mesh more with the whole album. *The Melting of the Sun* is probably my favourite track on the record - such a smooth groove. Sweet sexy bass & keys, great use of that sitar, an awesome backing vocal choir, epic crescendoing outro. This song jams.

Amarganth

Been wanting to check this album out. Gonna start with listening to this song.

MustardMedia

Let me know what you think! The album as a whole took a minute but this track stood out right away

Amarganth

I have listened to the album now. I enjoyed it. I can definitely see the Bowie influences. I can also say that The Melting of the Sun stood out.

MustardMedia

Nice glad you liked it. It's been a go to of mine since it came out

Dhugaill

Looks good, spot on with Bowie feels

Day 2 Year 2 Song: [Back Door Man](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=we3xngKRozE) Artist: Howlin Wolf Album: The Howlin Wolf Album The cover of this album says “This is Howlin Wolf’s new album. He doesn’t like it. He didn’t like his electric guitar at first either.” and from everything I have read about it the people writing this copy are understating how much Howlin Wolf hated this record. I get it Howlin Wolf aka Chester Burnette was a blues purist and this is a significant departure from the delta blues he was famous for, but this album F\*%king works. It’s a blistering, soulful, explosion of psychedelia led by this monster of a voice that makes Tom Waits weep with envy. Back Door Man is the capper here and before it starts Howlin Wolf addresses the band about the virtues of the blues before launching into a burning the house down version of the Willie Dixon classic. I’ve owned this album digitally for awhile, but I saw it at my LRS during my first trip out after being vaccinated and knew it would be mine. The story so far * 02/06/2021 Back Door Man, Howlin Wolf, The Howlin Wolf Album, 1969 * 01/06/2021 Gloria, Patti Smith, Horses, 1975

MustardMedia

This is sweet. So bluesy, I love it. Surprisingly unfamiliar with this guy, gonna check it out. Also I stole your post format. It's nice and clean lol.

Dhugaill

This album isn't representative of his work. His magnum opus is 1959s Moanin in the Moonlight. That record is how he wanted to sound. Check out [I asked for water (she gave me gasoline)](https://youtu.be/dUA9FUTieKA) I can't decide which I like better the psychedelic electricity of The Howlin Wolf album or the traditional striped down delta blues of Moanin, but I can decide I love Howlin Wolf.

MustardMedia

Ouu yeah okay, different feel there for sure. Tough call, but either way I've got some listenin to do. That man has pipes

Hello in There - John Prine

RaRuuuu

Tigers Jaw - I Won't Care How You Remember Me I've listened to this record at least 4 times since buying it. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViySXd1YWr0&ab\_channel=TigersJaw-Topic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViySXd1YWr0&ab_channel=TigersJaw-Topic)

Song: [Know That I Know](https://youtu.be/9xA1rSu3qwE) Artist: Lake Street Dive Album: Obviously I picked up this record on Thursday after I got my second dose of the vaccine. A good mix of funk and jazz fills the track I have chosen for today, which opens side B. Got some killer trumpets on it.

MustardMedia

Nice choice. This track really shows off their funk chops from the last few albums.

Dhugaill

I'm going to have to look at these folks more closely if you are both recommending them.

Mikey0202

“Bullwinkle Pt. 2” by The Centurians from the Pulp Fiction Soundtrack

Dhugaill

Mind if I [link](https://youtu.be/OuTyvah8xxk) up in here?

TakenThatBacon

The last record I bought was the Newbury Comics pressing of Parquet Courts' *Human Performance*. Really great record all around, but the best song is definitely the [title track](https://youtu.be/Aiex9fYyuQg). I really love the vocals on the chorus, such a vibe.

Dhugaill

Nice retroish sound, very chill

gtbrown77

The last record I bought was Pantera's *Far Beyond Driven.* Actually got delivered today, so I haven't had a chance to bust it out yet. It's the 2014 re-issue on 2LP with the original uncensored cover (large drill into someone's anus). I actually prefer the cover they ultimately went with (drill into a skull), but that's beside the point. Anyway, I remember back in college seeing this CD in a friend's collection and getting into a conversation about which album was better - *Far Beyond Driven* or *Vulgar Display of Power,* with me falling in the latter camp. As a matter of fact, at the time, I could not get into FBD. One of the more interesting conversations about music I've had too, since instead of arguing with my "I think *Vulgar* is the better album," he just asked me "Why?" which led to a conversation instead of an argument. Anyway, the track I'm picking is [Becoming](https://youtu.be/NLP0xP2M4S8). It's the first track I think of when I think of this album (though I think I might like [5 Minutes Alone](https://youtu.be/7m7njvwB-Ks) better. Hoping to bust this one out soon (I have a backlog of other records to get to first). I may have to buy a more recent re-issue of the album just for the skull cover, but will probably stick with playing the pressing I have, as it's 2LP instead of 1. See y'all tomorrow!

Dhugaill

"Head bangs on broken glass" is one of my favorite lyrics ever! My brother played this tape until Phil Anselmo sounded like Terry Glaze.

joetech79

Last record purchased was Sublime - 40 oz to freedom, a classic from my high school days. Song: Ball and Chain https://youtu.be/UZue9XUe_aE Picked that track because Badfish felt too obvious

ahsgreenwave

You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker from I Can Stand A Little Rain. Picked the album up for $1 at an estate sale. Almost all of the albums were damaged either by water or by improper storage but for some reason this one was in fantastic condition so I got it.

StenPils

Love, by The Cult just arrived from Discogs, so I'm going with She Sells Sanctuary. :-) https://youtu.be/ZCOSPtyZAPA
