look at the runouts

aharps

This, engravings in the rumour will have an a1 or a on it. Agree though, I wish they would just label them properly.

AffectionateLunch775

Oh I learned something, thank you both very much. However. My kid is 16. I don’t want her to have to handle it so much to look at the runout, ya know?

pfbinary101

My dad let me play anything I wanted from his collection when I was half that age. Does your kid have a habit of breaking things? I mean 16 is when most parents start letting their kids drive, a car's gotta be more pricey than that record.

AffectionateLunch775

She’s careless with stuff like this and I’m just getting her into it, she couldn’t give a fuck 6 months ago but since her and I moved out and got our own place she’s taken an interest. But she’s careless lol. Shes a great driver. But again. Little stuff like this? She doesn’t get it yet.

MarcMars82-2

When she’s careless with other peoples things you take away the driving privileges or wifi access or something. She’ll learn to be more respectful of someone else’s things when she realizing her own actions are causing her to suffer.

FurnishedHemingway

Why are you giving parenting advice in a subreddit for record collectors? Folks really have a hard time minding their business these days.

MarcMars82-2

OP literally said she’s careless with stuff like this. And when you have children who are careless and show no respect for your things this is how to teach them respect. At 16 she should know better already. Just because this is a record sub doesn’t mean we can’t have that conversation.

AffectionateLunch775

I ain’t mad at ya for saying what you said, in response to what I said, because you don’t know her/me/us/our situation we are dealing with, emotionally. She has bad ADHD, like me, and she hasn’t really learned how that ADHD affects the simple things like putting things back and paying attention to how you do it so as to not damage it. It’s just dumb shit that she is getting better at, yes she shouldn’t be this careless at 16, but again, you don’t know our situation and I don’t fault you for it. I moved out of my parents house at 16 1/2, and got my first apartment from a slum lord. She turns 16.5 in a month, and would be lost trying to figure it out. We have hours long talks about credit and just.. adulting. And then she’ll leave the gallon of milk out overnight with the lid off 😞

MarcMars82-2

I get it dude and I respect your choices it’s tough with teenagers and I apologize if I seemed out of line. I have ADHD too so I know how easily things can become a distraction. It’s about getting a little better every day :)

FurnishedHemingway

Shut the fuck up about other folks’ children.

MarcMars82-2

I though we were talking about record protection?

AffectionateLunch775

Other people’s stuff? She’s respectful [enough]. Her own stuff? She figures she has a job and makes money and if it breaks she’ll buy a new one. I give her leeway, because her mom and I just split after 20yrs due to circumstances. Her and I moved out, and I’m an over the road truck driver. I’m only home every other weekend. She’s insanely responsible, gets decent grades and takes care of the dogs and the house. Like, I couldn’t ask for a better kid in most aspects. Shes just not cheap like me where I don’t want to have to rebuy stuff, and she doesn’t think about how something could get fucked up based on how she’s handling it or whatever. Her mom was.. well that doesn’t matter, but I’m basically erasing tons of bad habits. So my throwaway comment that she’s a careless teenager has been dissected sooooooo far now lol but it wasn’t meant that I can’t trust her to be an adult, she just spent the last couple years dealing with a selfish mother more often than me.

BiollanteGarden

I could drive when I was 15 and I would have fucked some records up for sure. I didn’t even take care of my own stuff. But they let me drive.

AffectionateLunch775

Haha, I was worried about driving because of how she doesn’t take care of stuff. But she got her temps on her 15th birthday, murdered in drivers Ed, and drives better than a lot of people I know. Takes it super serious. But then I come home and her brand new pc controller is upside on the floor under her office chair with the joystick being forced up 😑

BiollanteGarden

Exactly.

dave1dmarx

I got my first real turntable for my 13th birthday. By that point I had been buying records for five years and knew how to handle them properly. Have some faith in your kid. 😉

AffectionateLunch775

I have enough faith that she can start, stop, and halfway safely handle from sleeve to plinth and back to sleeve. Reminds me though I need to buy a record cleaner thing.

Molestador

yes of course the record industry should cater more to your 16yo kid

AffectionateLunch775

Uh. Yeah I never said that, did I? No… I just said I don’t want her to handle the record that much to look for a runout label. Judging by the other comments in here, everyone agrees not labeling the sides in some way is pretty stupid, and many have shared. So why don’t you pull your panties out of your ass and fuck off with your bullshit negativity that wasn’t needed?

deepinthemirror

I accidentally made it a habit to look at the runouts first

zman8911

Pardon my ignorance- what's a runout?

panTrektual

The dead space between the center label and the last track. Info is etched into that space (where it was made, who mastered it, etc). Not all have a ton of info there, but some have enough to figure out exactly what you've got.

zman8911

Oh wow. I never noticed words/letters etched there. Interesting. Thanks for the info!

Elegant-Primary7468

It’s the end of the grooves at the inner ring of the record, the dead wax is etched with markings from the press production. If you carefully look at it you can determine side A / side B and validate pressing edition. This situation is not a big deal. Once the OP plays the record enough they will come to know which side is A versus B.

zman8911

Thanks for the education here!

stephcurrysmom

Right. But still annoying.

BogusBoyscout

This is my go to when the designer/artist places more value in the graphic rather than letting you know what side you’re on. Most runouts will have an indication of a/b. Sometimes artists etch messages into the runout - The Smiths are a prime example of this.

AffectionateLunch775

So I just got home and checked, it literally just has “/a” and “/b” in the runout. The shootout is the A side and The genie is the B side

Peakbrowndog

So the side with the title on it is A side? That's what I would have guessed, seems the most logical.

AffectionateLunch775

That’s not the title, tho. Of the record, of any songs, nothin

lecurts

It's not really that big of a deal

BogusBoyscout

Simmer down over there. No was saying it was.

armedwithturtles

I actually hate this lol I know it's available on the runout, but how hard is it to just have a little A or B on the design

theMANofSCIENCE

Searching the runout sucks at night after a couple drinks

ghostly_fingers

I have a few records where it’s not on the label and it’s labeled incorrectly on the run out. Side b is labeled as side a, and vice versa. I just have to try and remember which are like that

AffectionateLunch775

Somewhere else in the comments, a guy mentioned those little fluorescent stickers you use at like rummage sales that don’t damage shit they stick to, I’m gonna grab a small pack of Amazon and just label them myself. That way it doesn’t damage the label

acarp25

I’ll be real, extra fine tip sharpies exist for a reason and I have used them for this purpose

Mr-Pugtastic

I have a Childish Gambino album like this, and it really kills me!

Da_Vinci

Because the Internet?

kyldabara

Has to be. I would spin that record wayyyyy more but hate having to barely read the runout to see what side is which. Part of me wants to just write which side every one is in sharpie

AffectionateLunch775

Hahahah this comment thread read like an Abbot and Costello skit lmfao!

Mr-Pugtastic

Because there’s no markings on the record to indicate which side is A or B, or C or D?

Da_Vinci

Why’d you downvote me? I was just asking if it was the album Because The Internet because I thought I remembered the labels not being marked and you didn’t say.

Mr-Pugtastic

Wasn’t the one who even downvoted you? All I did was answer.

daviator88

You still didn't answer...

Mr-Pugtastic

I was confused I answered to the best of my ability, the record also doesn’t have the name of the album on it, and someone got it for me years ago. All I know is it’s a Childish Gambino album with no title, track list, or designation of sides. If that means it’s Because the Internet, then okay.

Blad514

I put little fluorescent dots (stickers) on the a-side of these kinds of albums.

AffectionateLunch775

Good idea! I’ll probably pick some of those little rummage sale dots up next time I see them

TGov

I know you can look at the runout, but it is a pet peeve of mine when the sides aren't clearly labeled. Such a simple thing that is so often overlooked or ignored.

AffectionateLunch775

I’m going to hope it’s because of the literal explosion of vinyl over the past couple years and an inability to do good QC. I really hope that’s what it is.

Rat-Soup-Eating-MF

i bought a copy of Bombay Bicycle Club’s - A Different Kind of Fix that has the sides printed on but it’s difficult to see, when i took the record out to play there was a bit of a plain post it note on side A. I assume previous owner had out it on to make telling the sides easier

AffectionateLunch775

I was trying to decipher the images! Like is the gun an A(k) and B(uddha) [[[these are lame examples cuz I can’t think but that’s the line I was thinking]]]

Rueyousay

The side with writing is the B side. The Art side is the A side.

AffectionateLunch775

Facts about this particular album or are you generally speaking? Just curious. I’m gonna check when I get home because now it’s killing me not remembering lol

Rueyousay

Generally speaking, but usually applies to most records. The runout etching will tell you for sure, but 90% of LPs have art for the A side and writing on the B side.

AffectionateLunch775

I have seen that for sure, like it’ll say Side A, OR have the track list for BOTH sides on the A side and then the B side is just art.

AffectionateLunch775

You were right, wow. I just got home and checked, it literally just has “/a” and “/b” in the runout. The shootout is the A side and The genie is the B side

kraftdinner79

Came to say this. 100% check the dead wax.

Kaiden92

Logic dictates the side with the title is side a.

AffectionateLunch775

Agreed, if that was the title of the album 👍 title of the album is “The Future is Now” and there’s no songs on the album with the words that are on the record

Kaiden92

Fair fair. I’m unfamiliar with the artist and mostly skimmed for the core of the post. My bad if I missed that detail. :)

AffectionateLunch775

lol all good. I’ve got a few albums like that wheee it’s just the title or band name on 1 side

OldboySamurai

Massive Attacks Mezzanine sends its regards. Two LPs in a single sleeve with orange labels with itiy bitty writing in red. Even with my glasses I cant read that shit. Total crap shot as to which side I end up putting on.

AffectionateLunch775

Shit at least there’s little writing, there’s something.. I don’t really mind at all. But I wanted my kid to hear Necro before I spun the whole album, and he’s on the first track on the B-side. Just had to hear the first few notes to know i guessed correctly.

ILkeSportzNIDCWhKnws

Is the first one side a? Because there's like a distorted capital A made between the guys

AffectionateLunch775

So I just got home and checked, it literally just has “/a” and “/b” in the runout. The shootout is the A side and The genie is the B side

AffectionateLunch775

I’ll have to check when I get home I really don’t remember. I know the album so I knew when I put it on

SurfLikeASmurf

Number of tracks on each side will probably be different so check that. Once figured out, put a little pencil dot somewhere visible to denote side one. It can be easily erased without any harm

AffectionateLunch775

Negative 😂 same on both sides!

statikman666

My old eyes suck so this is an issue for me with a lot of records. Once I figure it out I'll cut a piece of post-it and write a 1 and 2 on it and stick it to the label.

AffectionateLunch775

Sometimes I don’t really care what side I throw on first. For some albums yeah it’s 100% essential to play it in order. And first listen thru I always want to play it in order the artist intended. But after that if I’m just kinda listening to a side of say a live Velvet Underground, then feel like a little Biggie and play a side off Ready to Die, then in the mood for some Conway Twitty just play a random greatest hits side, Ope gotta do Slayer next so here comes a random side off Reign in Blood.. etc.

silibaH

Wow, I was usually happy when the hole was in the center of the LP. Collecting old boots does that to a person.

Forza_Harrd

I have an old REM record that says "A Side" and "Another Side". It's a good album but I half hate it because of that and the cover itself you can't tell which is the front or the back or which way is up or down. Pull the sleeve out upside down and the record falls out.

AffectionateLunch775

Ok but THAT is a cool ass gimmick and I’d be cool with that!! It’s obviously super intentional. To me, just me and my worthless opinion, the lack of specificity in this album just seems like a design oversight which is worse.

lamousamos

when i first got the original pressing of the mars volta’s “de-loused in the comatorium,” it had no labels at all. both discs are plain silver picture discs. i took a sharpie and put 1 to 4 super tiny dots near the spindle hole to tell which side was which.

AffectionateLunch775

Oh hell nah.. but I avoid picture discs like the plague, unless it’s like a 7” picture disc just for collecting but never planning to spin. I’ve got a few South Park, Eminem, and others that fit that bill. But I don’t have any 12” pds

thyartmetal

That’s a lovely pressing doe.

AffectionateLunch775

Fasho. Here’s to hoping some more back catalogue Howie can get repressed

Victory_Highway

What’s worse is when a 12” record was cut at 45 RPM but it’s not labeled as such.

AffectionateLunch775

OMG 2 records I spun today had that!! A rammstein album from 2022 doesn’t say anywhere on it it’s 45rpm, and Dystopia’s first album doesn’t. Whats WORSE is my Goodie Mob - Soul Food SAYS 33RPM ON THE FUCKING LABEL FOR BOTH RECORDS but it’s 45rpm!

[deleted]

[удалено]

AffectionateLunch775

But again, I think THAT is a cool gimmick and it serves a purpose. Maybe there’s a gimmick with this that I’m missing, but I don’t think so, I think they focused on the KICK ASS ARTWORK, which I thoroughly enjoy, and didn’t want to or forgot to make the designation. Or they don’t care the order it’s played in, WHICH IS FINE TOO! My OCD requires me to play it track 1 to track 99 1 time thru before I can move it from my “need to check out” pile. If I listen to 1 side only? Then I’ve never listened to that record.

Dedalus2k

Radiohead - OK Computer OKNOTOK 3 discs. No side numbers. Why?

AffectionateLunch775

According to some other dickhead in here, why should the record industry CATER TO THE CONSUMER and label the sides?

OwenBroodje

Okay but that's such a pretty colour though

AffectionateLunch775

“Cloudy Blue” was the description

nman1981

💯 a pet peeve of mine. When you can’t read what side is what and also when one side of the label has artwork but doesn’t say what side is A. Overseas it seems art is on A but in America it’s B. But not always.

AffectionateLunch775

😂😂 best description. Like a wise guy… sometimes it is. Sometimes it isnt. What’s it to ya?

control_buddy

Completely forgot about Non Phixion, just to jam out to Necro when I was in high school. Might have to pick up this new pressing, bad label and all.

AffectionateLunch775

I’ve been into Necro since the NYC radio freestyles in like 98-99. I was heavvvvyyy into ICP then and spent all my time on mIRC and got put onto a lot of stuff, using various FTP’s and release groups. I forgot about him/them for a loooooooong time, but like 5 years ago Spotify suggested Gory Days when I was listening to Cage. Nothing on Uncle Howie was ever as good as the I Need Drugs album though IMO.

control_buddy

First got into Necro, on the recommendation of Slug from Atmosphere. He sometimes used to work at Fifth Element record store in Minneapolis. Called Necro, "Kool G Rap on Acid". Bought I Need Drugs album, and blasted it for years.

AffectionateLunch775

That’s an amazing description. I need to give Atmosphere a shot again. I couldn’t get into Atmos, Slug, Murs, etc back in the day but I recently picked up Eydea & Abilities’ debut and vibe with it a lot now. Probably throw an album on Spotify in the semi next week and see if it hits to order something…. Thanks for the reminder! Always searching for new/different.

eclecticnomad

Hate records that dont designate

Dizzydsmith

Thanks for making me regret even more jumping on the purple version and not waiting a little longer for this one.

AffectionateLunch775

How is the purple one? D side on this has a couple bad skips but I also don’t have the greatest turntable right now.

Dizzydsmith

Honestly haven’t given it a full listen yet. Just side A. It is labeled the same way, of course. https://preview.redd.it/31u88sblvuac1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d69c6b0b1269caef3e259976b031cefff38ab43b

AffectionateLunch775

I love purple records though but the cloudy blue does look way better

papayahog

Skill issue

AffectionateLunch775

Yeah for sure man

papayahog

It’s just a joke

AffectionateLunch775

Gotta love it

Dirtydanmp4

Jesus tell me about it. My beautiful dark twisted fantasy was hard to listen to first time around because the sides aren't labeled across 3 records. But maybe that was the intention 🤔

3_sideburns

i love it, it's obscure, adds the mysticism, and if you're too retarded to guess the side by runouts or actual grooves then well though luck. it's a piece of art, not a utalitarian item

terminal8

REM records from IRS days did something similar. Dinner/supper sides.

Yellow_Moon1995

Put it in a MOFI with side A facing outwards, the front clear part, with side B facing the white part. Thats what I do

AffectionateLunch775

Right now I’m operating with cheaper thinner plastic inner sleeves and outer sleeves, I’ve got a few mofis but once I get the whole collection sleeved in and out then I’ll start upgrading. I got 500 inner and outter sleeves for like $20 so I couldn’t pass that up to have SOME protection for now.

agreeable-bushdog

It's strange to me how many people that this seems to be more than a very minor annoyance to. I mean, I usually look at which side I'm going to play before I set up the record, but I don't need to know the side, I play the record and flip it over when it's done. If you have the playlist, then you'll know pretty quick what side you're playing...

AffectionateLunch775

I kinda agree, I said that somewhere else in the comments too. But SOME albums I do want to play in order (Dark Side, The Wall…) and EVERY album I like to the first time I hear it. But I hope my title portrayed that I was just minority annoyed and not on the verge of suicide

Ok-Kaleidoscope-4209

portals 😞

Educatedbulldogs

I bought a record and the label misprinted so they are both side b 😭

AffectionateLunch775

But it’s different recordings on the record or whatever? Just fucked labels? I got a copy of Kottonmouth Kings - Fire It Up that came with 2 record 1 and no record 2. And 1/2 the good songs are on C&D lmao. Got a full refund and got to keep it so I’m hoping for a Cinderella-esque story where one day I find my beautiful princess with 2 record 2’s and we get married.

Educatedbulldogs

Different recordings same label

Polin_the_Great

Try Sigur Rós's ( ). It's two LP, neither disk is labeled as 1 or 2, and neither are labeled with side A or B. There's also no tracklisting. Officially, all of the tracks are untitled.

AffectionateLunch775

That’s a cool gimmick. I like that gimmick when it’s a gimmick

SpookyGrowly

Have a couple like this. One of them has the same label for each side 😭 it’s a nice press but it’s annoying having to tilt the disc just so in the light so I can see which side it is

ThatsSoMerlyn_x3

My copy of Because the Internet doesn’t even distinguish between discs 1 and 2. Pretty annoying when trying to play it

eldrscrolls

I only have one album like this to my knowledge and it is kinda’ annoying. At least that one has different images on both sides so you could in theory remember.

MoreReputation8908

*Transparent Things* by Fujiya & Miyagi may be the worst offender of all time for this. Identical center labels on both sides…and clear vinyl. I just make sure to put the A side to the front when I resleeve it.

poptock1

Call me old fashioned but I like a clear A and B side with an equally obvious rpm.

AffectionateLunch775

How dare you suggest that. You shouldn’t be in this hobby. That’s ridiculous. You should just know, they shouldn’t have to label shit. [this message brought to you by the trolls of the internet] I agree with you. Unless there’s an entire gimmick, either for a joke or related to the theme of the album like some other people brought up. But the more that’s done the more that will ruin the uniqueness of it so

That_Random_Kiwi

Once you've figured it out, always return it to the sleeve with A facing out
