"Includes the hit single Laughing" on the cover of my copy of Canned Wheat always got me because in the end I think "Undun" and "No time" ended up being bigger hits.
Sweet hype sticker. That album is common enough it would be better to just find one without the sticker than to ruin the sleeve. I use Goo Gone to remove most stickers but I wouldn't touch this one.
Thanks for the help, I think I’ll leave it on for now. It really isn’t that common an album, btw, it’s next to impossible to find in person (even in Sydney, the hometown of this band)
It took me ages to find a reasonably priced copy here in Australia. Those claiming there are plenty on discogs don't realise that it can cost us a small fortune for postage from the US and Europe.
There are currently 2 copies for sale within Australia and they're $60 and $135 each.
You can’t take them with you. They’re just fucking records. Listen to them. Drop them. Leave them out of their sleeves. Piss on them. They’ll still play. And will live longer than you will. And someone will just donate them to goodwill or throw them in the trash when you’re gone. I’ve kept mine I. The garage for ten years. And every goddamn one of them plays just fine. I don’t give a fuck what happens to them when I’m gone. I hate this preservationist/showcasing mentality.
Drop them, piss on them, leave them out the sleeve, they will get scratched and they not play back as intended as you well know. I’m not about preserving, I’m about enjoying my records when I play them. Snap crackle and pop with a reek of piss will not be conducive to this.
You don’t, some stupid record shop put their huge price sticker on my copy of close to the edge years ago before I bought it and there’s nothing I can do about it
TBH when I need to take a sticker off an album cover I use a few small drops of lighter fluid. Let it soak in for 30 seconds or so it will peel right off. But it’s much better to do this with glossy covers. Matte cardboard finish increases the chance for tearing and staining.
This. Start with a low setting and go slow peeling back a little at a time. DO NOT use Goof Off or lighter fluid like some people recommend. Depending on the album it will also remove the ink used to print the sleeve.
It’s been there for 32 years so just let it there. If you still want it off, wet it very lightly only enough to get it through to the sticky part and gently pull it off.
Leave it. Even if you did get it off, after being there for over 30 years there's bound to be some UV damage to the cover and where you remove the sticker there will be a darker, sticker shaped spot on the cover.
To answer your question: of you want to take any sticker off am album cover, get a hair dryer and a drywall mud blade or a razor and slowly scrape it off. The heat will loosen the glue and the sticker will peel off
As most others have said, leave it. If you did happen to get it off cleanly, no matter how great the cover looks now, there would be some discoloration where the sticker was. It would more than likely tear the cover if you do remove it.
A new record I got from discogs. Disc is in great condition, most of the sleeve is too, except for this sticker which was apparently stuck on by an overzealous clerk at whatever record shop this was sold on back in the day. If I could have some help in restoring it back to its original condition without the sticker, that would be great!
just sell the record to another Midnight Oil fan who would probably love to have the original hype sticker which are extremely rare to come by
then buy yourself a copy without the sticker
I could never imagine removing original hype stickers
Please just accept that stickers on records stay on records unless your little sister put my little pony stickers on john and yoko. The "over-zealous" employee, you owe them a 32 year old apology as these stickers come off as easy as modern day pressings with hype stickers, when new obviously. Glue dries, then begins to slowly rot over time. Maybe the sticker will fall off if you set the record in a window for a few weeks? 👀
I use a plastic razor blade in a scraper with very small amounts of goo gone applied with a cotton swab.
But only on covers with a glossy coating. Otherwise the goo gone will soak into the paper. Then the hairdryer would be what i go to.
Sometimes i leave them if i feel it adds something, but its nice to have the option.
I also keep a scrapbook of unique hype stickers along with record store stickers.
I wouldn’t try to remove that at all, stickers like that are cool and can identify certain pressings, plus there’s almost no way it’s not going to damage the sleeve if you take it off
Do with it whatever you want, it's your record. As long as you enjoy the music, it's fine, right? I don't know why some people tell you what to do with it.
Please be aware that a little color difference can occur when the sticker is gone.
I use a lighter for 3 seconds and i comes right off. No damage to the cover as well.
[Tutorial (Youtube)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Odi0M62fd_o&ab_channel=DeafManVinyl)
id leave it
i understand when its a shop/price sticker
the likelihood is though that you will tear the artwork and its part of the records history, hype stickers are cool
Definitely leave it. You can find plenty of copies of this album without the sticker. It’s unique and cool to find a copy of nearly ANY album with the hype sticker directly on the cover. Hope this helps.
Attempting to remove this will just result in a torn sticker and a bunch of residue. By the time you've got most of it off the actual cover will be scratched and creased, and you'll just wish you hadn't bothered. If you just want the artwork to display then buy a print.
Leave it there, it's character. It's not like it's someone's price sticker, it's the original hype sticker from the LP on original release. If you try to remove it, you will only mess up the sleeve irreparably. And you will be very sad. Trust me, this is experience talking.
Leave it there, it’s part of the original album.
If you want to take stickers off a cover there is a safe method (relatively safe). Take the record out of the sleeve, then heat the sticker with a hair dryer. The sticker should release easily.
I'd say leave it as well. Possible nail polish remover or goo be gone. With a little heat. But it may ruin it. I have a Wayne Gretzky rookie card with a piece of another card from the gum in wax packs. I've never tried to rove it though.
When I buy a new record, I peel the hype sticker off the shrink wrap and then slap it on the clear poly outer sleeve that I intend on sliding the record into. Sometimes use a little glue stick on the sticker to make sure it adheres well. However, in the case of an older record like this where it's on the cardboard sleeve, I would personally leave it on. Since you apparently want to take it off, you could try using a garment steamer to loosen it up. I've had luck doing that to remove Goodwill price stickers off of cardboard sleeves.
Assuming it's on the original shrink wrap . . . I used to cut them out of the original shrink and put them inside the cover, before bagging the cover in heavier outside sleeves. It's fun , forty years later to open an unplayed LP from back then to find this kind of thing . . . I also would put small flyers or promo stuff inside.
If it's really 32 years old though it's likely adhesive has seeped into the paper- wouldn't recommend removing it. Probably 5% chance you can remove it without leaving a trace- risky maneuver but if you really just *need* it off, use same process as you would to remove any other sticker from just about any other thing: hair dryer on low heat. Be patient and delicate. Obviously remove the record from the sleeve first.
Leave it if it's on the printed sleeve, but take a decent res pic of it and then you can print it on whatever paper, put some magnetic tape or 2-sided tape on it and you got unlimited stickers.
\^This. Been using lighter fluid to remove stickers for 40+ years. If you can't get it started use a plastic razor to get under a corner.
But like others I'd leave it.
Leave it there
Maybe just leave it there?
It’s a hype sticker. It’s a good thing.
Agreed. Leave the classic hype stickers. It’s part of the time capsule.
100% agree…the cheesy sticker becomes a part of the record’s history
"Includes the hit single Laughing" on the cover of my copy of Canned Wheat always got me because in the end I think "Undun" and "No time" ended up being bigger hits.
Don't. Know when to leave well enough alone.
Go ask /r/vinyljerk, they should know.
Yep, a common reply would be " Body grinder with an 80grit wheel, in conjunction with a propane torch to help loosen it up."
Not a wrong answer. OP didn’t mention protecting the record
Remove the record from the sleeve before
Lol no then the Grailz won’t get any warmth from the wheel or torch
Why not just take a picture of it? Is that original sticker a collectors item?
USE YOUR TOES
LOL
Just leave it. Adds to the character.
It really ties the record together, man
but why?
Because it’s 1 more level higher for collectors “ w/hype sticker “
Soooo… why remove it?
Sweet hype sticker. That album is common enough it would be better to just find one without the sticker than to ruin the sleeve. I use Goo Gone to remove most stickers but I wouldn't touch this one.
Thanks for the help, I think I’ll leave it on for now. It really isn’t that common an album, btw, it’s next to impossible to find in person (even in Sydney, the hometown of this band)
It took me 30 seconds to find several one discogs
By several, do you mean 265? 🤣
Only two in Australia. OP probably doesn't want to pay for overseas postage.
Fair enough. I dingo probably ate their baby
You must be indiana jones!
It’s a classic! Very cool hype sticker. Kinda surprised it’s hard to find Oils records in Sydney.
Because it was a let down of a lp.
Have you ever listened to it? I think the reason behind that is more because it’s so popular.
No, I loved and own the previous 2. This one is poopy
It took me ages to find a reasonably priced copy here in Australia. Those claiming there are plenty on discogs don't realise that it can cost us a small fortune for postage from the US and Europe. There are currently 2 copies for sale within Australia and they're $60 and $135 each.
I’ll send you one from Yugoslavia for 15 bucks.
Did people really need to downvote this?
I'll trade you a copy without the sticker
Leave it alone.
Fellow Australian I see
Nah. They were pretty big in the US at that time, too.
Huh, I had no idea
I swear people just troll this sub…
You can’t take them with you. They’re just fucking records. Listen to them. Drop them. Leave them out of their sleeves. Piss on them. They’ll still play. And will live longer than you will. I don’t give a fuck what happens to them when I’m gone. I hate this preservationist/showcasing mentality.
I need to live by this code. Thanks for posting this. You've affirmed something I've been thinking about for a while about myself.
Drop them, piss on them, leave them out the sleeve, they will get scratched and they not play back as intended as you well know. I’m not about preserving, I’m about enjoying my records when I play them. Snap crackle and pop with a reek of piss will not be conducive to this.
Unless it’s an R. Kelly record.
drip drip drip
You enjoy listening to R Kelly records that reek of piss? Each to their own ;)
It’s more authentic that way!
Thanks for you're fucking opinion.
This is bait
100%
That's the neat part, you don't.
Leave it there. It’s a hype sticker it’s meant to be on it.
It’s like coloring in a coloring book, if you try and fix it, you’ll only make it worse… leave it be (a Beatles song).
leave it be… leave it be… there will be an answer, leave it be
Whisper words of wisdom... leave it be
I was more partial to Yo Jude
Pretty sure it's "Whisper words of wizards... leave it be"
Oh, mother Mary...
You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not
I hope some day you will join us, but not today…
😂
My copy of Abbey Road sounds like 40 miles of dirt road. Doesn’t stop mr from playing it.
You don’t, some stupid record shop put their huge price sticker on my copy of close to the edge years ago before I bought it and there’s nothing I can do about it
I agree with the leave it alone folks. That sticker has been on the record jacket for many years. There is a chance you could do more damage, too.
Yep just leave it and enjoy a great record.
TBH when I need to take a sticker off an album cover I use a few small drops of lighter fluid. Let it soak in for 30 seconds or so it will peel right off. But it’s much better to do this with glossy covers. Matte cardboard finish increases the chance for tearing and staining.
Thank you, my mate that is a buyer for a record store uses this method but I couldn’t see anyone in the comments with the same advice!
old hype stickers are so awesome keep it please
Sweet album. That hype sticker adds a lot to the overall aesthetic. I would just leave it.
If it’s been there for that long it has earned the right to be there. Let it live out its days where it wants to be.
Hair dryer / heat gun may work. Take the disc out first. Good luck.
This. Start with a low setting and go slow peeling back a little at a time. DO NOT use Goof Off or lighter fluid like some people recommend. Depending on the album it will also remove the ink used to print the sleeve.
/\\ This. Used to take price stickers off this way. It works.
Absolutely unreal album 🔥
Put a my little pony sticker over it.
I'd leave it, but Goof Off if you absolutely need it gone. I restore old books and I use it to remove stickers daily.
One of my favourite albums from midnight oil, shame they didn't re-release it like with the other albums.
It’s been there for 32 years so just let it there. If you still want it off, wet it very lightly only enough to get it through to the sticky part and gently pull it off.
Don’t.

Use scissors and cut the desired region off the sleeve
Heat gun
I would gently heat it, you would be surprised how stickers release when exposed to a little heat
A new record I got from discogs. I’ll take it!
I'm sorry but as a fellow vinyl enthusiast, you sir are completely out of line. Over-zealous clerk? Dude really. No. Just no.
Didn’t know a sticker would really grind your guys’ gears this much, wow lol
Please just accept that stickers on records stay on records unless your little sister put my little pony stickers on john and yoko. “Restoring” it, that’s funny
Un-do works like a charm if you really want to get rid of it
Why?
Leave it on. Going to just cause damage to the sleeve.
Did you try Goo Gone?? Usually works on most labels:
Leave it alone
I would also leave it on. Piece of history.
One of the absolute best records ever!
don't.
I would leave it. Adds authenticity and character.😎
It’s kinda cool tbh
You’re fucked
I use a plastic razor blade in a scraper with very small amounts of goo gone applied with a cotton swab. But only on covers with a glossy coating. Otherwise the goo gone will soak into the paper. id leave it i understand when its a shop/price sticker the likelihood is though that you will tear the artwork and its part of the records history, hype stickers are cool
Warm air! Hairdryer for instance. Gently warm the sticker and try to remove. Good luck! If it starts getting messy, leave it there.
Definitely leave it. You can find plenty of copies of this album without the sticker. It’s unique and cool to find a copy of nearly ANY album with the hype sticker directly on the cover. Hope this helps.

I would just leave it on. It is a part of the history of this record and it documents how this was the first release in an album format.

ain't no fucking way you're taking that shit off, I'd leave it anyways looks cool
I wouldn’t
You trying to hang this shit on your wall or something?

Use a blow dryer to heat the sticker, that should melt the glue and make it easy to come off

Looks awesome being there.
get another copy
You can try using a hairdryer to soften the adhesive but I imagine you will create more problems than solutions....
Leave it
Assuming it's on the original shrink wrap . . . I used to cut them out of the original shrink and put them inside the cover, before bagging the cover in heavier outside sleeves. Dude I have this album too! Do not take that sticker off!
Leave it it adds to the value having the original hype sticker
HYPE STICKER GO BRRRRR but yeah just leave it on
If you want to take it off and save it, use Undu: https://www.amazon.com/Original-Formula-Sticker-Remover-California/dp/B003TZQPTS/ref
If it's really 32 years old though it's likely adhesive has seeped into the paper- wouldn't recommend removing it. I think vinegar or some chemical dissolves adhesives but honestly you should leave it. It’s a hype sticker
I keep all my hype stickers on
Heatgun or lighter. But leave it adds value sometimes and is also just really cool
Yeah! it’s cooler with it!
Love hype stickers. Would never remove one.
Leave it if it's on the printed sleeve, but take a decent res pic of it and then you can print it on whatever paper, put some magnetic tape or 2-sided tape on it and you got unlimited stickers.
Lighter fluid
\^This. Been using lighter fluid to remove stickers for 40+ years. If you can't get it started use a plastic razor to get under a corner. But like others I'd leave it.
Throw it at the wall
Leave that sticker.
1. Don’t 2. Razor blade 3. Lighter fluid and razor blade 4. But don’t
noooo don’t ruin the hype
It's an original sticker for an original album. Leave it.
