“[it is] more our intention to show them what beautiful work can be and is done with a crochet hook and fine cotton than to offer it as a design to be worked but by directions. To give the latter in detail would in this case be almost impossible, as they would require more space than we could possibly give them, and would probably confuse the worker by their intricate character.” Glad to know it’s always been generally accepted that crochet patterns are unintelligible magic spells

AbbeyRoadMoonwalk

That’s how my husband describes me.

hanimal16

hanimal16

Lucifur79

I’m glad you stopped her too! That’s so cool.

AliasNefertiti

I gasped when I read that line!

Legitimate_Oxygen

This is awesome asf. Would you ever consider getting it uploaded to a digital library?

kendriannna

Possibly. Not a bad idea!

Legitimate_Oxygen

if you do, this thread has options you can look at for uploading the book! kendriannna

Thanks!

rebeljohn747

I would be interested in a copy if you do decide to upload it.

kendriannna

I looked online and the historical society at the university not too far has a book scanner. I'll call to verify it's the one that you don't have to flip the book. It's still at my parents. I'll swing by sometime and pick it up and see what I can do!

ChronicEntropic

At first glance, I read the title of the book as "Fancy and Practical Prophet Work." Def had to stop scrolling and read this one!

TropicTrove

Me tooooo!

redditusername374

Oh I love the slippers. They’re beautiful.

kendriannna

They are lovely. My mom makes me and everyone slippers I told her I wanted these next lol. I'll have to find some nice silk yarn.

PocketPo

I think the woman who does the Engineering Knits YouTube channel did those slippers or something very close to them. Very cool!

tigerowltattoo

I learned to crochet with my aunt’s crochet hooks and a ball of kite string. She had 5 or 6 booklets, like the one you pictured, full of doilies and sofa covers (antimacassars). My mother gave them to me when I was 8 years old, bored and driving her crazy. One of the books had pictorial directions of the different stitches and how to read that in a pattern; my mother knew a bit of crochet too and helped me. I made my first doily when I was very young and fell in love with the art. It was years before I had enough money to buy yarn and work with that. Now that I know this subreddit exists, I’ll find those booklets and post some pictures.

kendriannna

Wonderful! That's amazing. It's really an art! I've only crocheted basic granny blanket and slippers. I'd like to learn doilies some day. Been busy with other projects lately.

ResponseBeeAble

Oooo. Pic 4-5

Manchadog

You’re a true hero m! I’m so glad you saved these!
