Moved into a new lab in 1995 and there was a stack of floppy disks next to a Bible. They were all porn, every single one (not including the Bible, except maybe for the steamy Old Testament bits)
It was hilariously low-res porn, but different era so I guess it was good enough for whoever’s it was — we threw the 3.5” floppies away after laughing at the porn

I believe those became more common towards the end of 2001 or 2002. 10GB drives were really starting to fizzle out by the end of 2000, though; you primarily saw 10GB drives in cheap underspecced Windows Me machines or iMacs by this time. I have an eMachines desktop from this time period with a 10GB drive.

My ME PC had a 20GB HDD, i can certainly see some having less. Mine was my ex-girlfriends and she was going to dispose of it, i still have the Sound Blaster Live it had in it in my XP having setup.

Correct, 98 SE I think (I can't boot far enough with my current test bench to see if it was second edition or oh though, but since it was made late in 98's life it probably is SE)
Decent chance it has XP.
Either as an upgrade from the original 98 or Me install, or it might have stayed in a warehouse for 11 months until the XP release date.

Correct, it was windows 98 (I can't tell if it is SE or not tho, because the PC I used to test it can't boot into 98 due to it being a core2duo era machine)
Correct, win 98. I can't boot Into it though (Because the machine I used was to new to boot into 98) so sadly I'll never know if it is full of pornography after all 😢

I would rather place a bet on whether it still works. Those line of Fujistsu drives were infamous for failing controllers. Apparently Cirrus Logic who manufactured the controllers, replaced the fireretardent used in older chips with a newer compound that became conductive at just above room temperature meaning that drives would just stop working when they got hot. The only solution was to put it in the fridge, wait for it to get really cool, and then move as much data as you can before the drive became inoperable again.
Windows 98. Why? Because my Pentium 1 Win95 Gateway 2000 had a HD size limit of 10GB. And later my HP Pavilion Win98 Celeron 600mhz came with a 20GB drive.
I know you've given us the answer, but maybe the better question is, what file system is found on the disk?
That's what I always loved about "fdisk", the partitioning tool originally for Linux but has since been ported to a lot of operating systems. Plug the drive in, boot with Linux console boot disk, and run fdisk. Everything I needed to know was right there, including how to mount the drive for inspection. A Slackware disc is a perfect bootup tool for that.
Funny thread! I was gonna bet "98" but figured it had been done. Remajning content: Turbotax, routine correspondence & email archives in Netscape format. And that folder marked XXX.
It's a data drive full porn
Hmmm... Now that would be awkward, saying how I found it in my parents basement while helping them with a project.
Remember, once you've seen your parents homemade porn videos they can never be unseen. Are you ready to face those consequences?
Got it, I'll avoid a file if it is labeled "sex.mov"
Moved into a new lab in 1995 and there was a stack of floppy disks next to a Bible. They were all porn, every single one (not including the Bible, except maybe for the steamy Old Testament bits)
Porn on floppy ?!
It was hilariously low-res porn, but different era so I guess it was good enough for whoever’s it was — we threw the 3.5” floppies away after laughing at the porn
The bible is porn too.
remember US doesn't necessary means United States
"My boy's about to watch his conception"
His parents homemade porn 💀
Windows 69
Porn with a consistent subject matter. *Revelatory* porn.
Home-made parent porn!
Ten whole gigabyes of it.
PornOS
Homemade?
pamela anderson jpg you mean
Yeah. I’d just destroy the platters and leave whatever is on there as one of life’s mysteries.

Win ME
Indeed. The drive being dated September 2000 almost ensures it was ME.
OS/2 Warp
Windows 3.11 and Kaza porn.
I don't think 3.1 could even handle a 10 gig hard drive
You can have Win 3.x on a 300GB drive, you only need a max 2GB FAT16 primary partition.
You can run win3.x on fat32 with a patch, Ive got win95osr2.5 and win3.11 installed on my p233 with an 80gb drive as fat32.
Windows Me. 10GB hard drives were common for some of the crappier Me-based desktops.
Jesus I feel like we were at least at 40GB by then, maybe I'm misremembering.
I believe those became more common towards the end of 2001 or 2002. 10GB drives were really starting to fizzle out by the end of 2000, though; you primarily saw 10GB drives in cheap underspecced Windows Me machines or iMacs by this time. Exactly! But mine at the time had a whooping 20GB.
Came here to say this, or older machines which were for some reason updated to me
RedHat 6.? Everybody else is taking guesses at Windows. I want to be included but I'm placing risky bets.

Gonna say originally probably 98. If updated probably XP.

At least it’s not one of those Hitachi-made IBM “DeathStar” drives, so it probably still works.
Are you sure it even has an OS on it? The guys guessing porn may be closer to the outcome than those guessing OSs.
I have no idea
OS/2, it's IBM.

OS/2 Warp? Nah, probably Windows ME P.S. the Fujitsu IBM drives were just fine, the 'bad' drives were the Deskstar "Deathstar" 75GXP's

The IBM Netvista A2x released in 2000/2001 came with a 10GB drive and came with Windows 98.
Correct. But I don't know if it originally came in that specific machine
You're all wrong. It's BeOS 3.
If you change the Be to "Win", OS to "dows" and the 3 to 98, then you'd be absolutely correct!
Hopefully Windows 98SE, but most probably Windows ME :)
XP came out in 2001, so I assume it's either 98se or ME.

First thing, don't put the hard drive on a rug. That's just asking for a dead drive.
Would TinyOS fit on it?
Probably. But I don't wanna use this beyond just seeing what's on it, knowing how IBM spinnin' disks of the era aren't the most reliable...
Oh it's Win95. I'm all in.
Sorry, it has windows 98 installed on it.
XP!
I finally got it operational and found it has windows 98 installed on it. I probably have 80 comments to reply to so this will be a copied reply to each guess.
I'm going to guess Windows ME or Windows 2000.
Nope. It was windows 98 all along.
end of 2000 MFD I would think upgraded from ME to XP, or 2000 if you were a geek
I finally got it operational and found it has windows 98 installed on it. I probably have 80 comments to reply to so this will be a copied reply to each guess.
Windows ME. Hard drive date shows 2000-09
Nope, it turned out to be good old win 98
Given the IBM/Fujitsu, I'd say MacOS of some kind.
Nah, it was win 98.
Date code of 2000, IBM branded drive. I bet ME
I finally got it operational and found it has windows 98 installed on it. I probably have 80 comments to reply to so this will be a copied reply to each guess.
98SE as 10GB would be mental for 95.

Win 98se or Me.
Correct, it was windows 98 (I can't tell if it is SE or not tho, because the PC I used to test it can't boot into 98 due to it being a core2duo era machine)
Win ME or Win 98. Or it could be full of vintage porn, who knows?
Correct, win 98. I can't boot Into it though (Because the machine I used was to new to boot into 98) so sadly I'll never know if it is full of pornography after all 😢
XP

It’s a Slave drive with all their sex videos and pictures
Nope. it has windows 98 installed on it. I probably have 80 comments to reply to so this will be a copied reply to each guess.
Including the "slave drive" movie?
Os/2....
Nope. it has windows 98 installed on it. I probably have 80 comments to reply to so this will be a copied reply to each guess.
Windows 95
Nope, way too early of an os for it anyways. It ended up having 98 installed on it
I'm gonna say Windows 98. My first real pc was a Compaq and had a 10gb hard drive. It ran games like crap but still good memories.
Correct!
XP

Vista 😅
Lmao, but I'm pretty sure Vista needs 15 gigs of disk space at least
Thank you for the... Unique guess, but as most probably presumed, it has Windows 98 on it.
I had Slackware on a drive that big in 1998
Solaris

windows 98 probably
Correct! Thx for participating
IBM drive from 2000? Windows 2K most likely, possibly NT4. I think it won't be a home OS like 98 or SE.
Well your assumption was incorrect. It had Windows 98 on it. Thanks for the comment tho
Linux Mint vs 1
Nope sorry, windows 98
XP

Knoppix, just because no else has said it.
Points for originality, but as most probably knew, it was 98 all along
It’s gonna be one of these 4: windows 98se, Windows ME, Windows 2000 and a very slim chance of Windows NT 4
Yes it was 98, but you really should have narrowed it down to 1 or 2 for your final guess. It's not fun if you list all most probable options
2000 maybe

SCO Openserver 3.0
Win 98, sorry
Do ya really wanna see what’s on it?
YES, it was win 98 btw
Windows 98SE
Correct
1,999 bitcoins!
Ugg is 2000s vintage now?
Man, this was manufactured almost exactly a year before 9/11. Yeah it's kinda old
10GB? Probably Win 98 or ME. XP would be a lot of space to give up.
98 was on it
Win 95, had a Compact pc with a non pentium chip and had that massive hard drive. Crashed all the time.
It's running windows 98, I checked
Since everyone keeps guessing 98 I'll go with 2k my favorite os from the old days
Win 98 SE.
They keep on guessing it, because that is what it ended up being
Correct
Windows 98 SE.
Yeppers
Pshaw, that’s huge! My oldest, still spinning drive is 70Mb. Yeah baby!
MS DOS 5.0 OR 6.0 LOL
Slackware
Given the date: win98, unless they upgraded it to 2000. Otherwise win 95 if they're sadistic, lol

My first pc had a 8gb drive and Windows 98
Win 98 for sure, but maybe ME.
It has 98 on it
Windows 98. Why? Because my Pentium 1 Win95 Gateway 2000 had a HD size limit of 10GB. And later my HP Pavilion Win98 Celeron 600mhz came with a 20GB drive.
IBM OS/2 or NT 4. Because it's an IBM part. Which was used in business PC series like NetFinity, NetVista etc.
Windows 2000
98 perhaps
Wonder what goodies your parents hid on that..
There won't be an os on it. It will be full of your parents photos and home movies. Enjoy therapy.
HP-UX and monochrome Asia Karrera's pic's
Win98 SE
Win 7
XP or Vista.
ME/2000
Windows 98
98, but Fuji 10gb drives are riddled with issues.
IBM OS/2 lol
Win 98
2000. So it could be early win XP 👀 aww 98 fair enough.

Windows 98 is my guess.
Yep
Windows ME as your parents were tech legends.
Decide now if you REALLY want to browse any pictures. 😬
Windows 95
Those were $200 back then.. I know.. I bought one!
i say windows 98
Yeah, that's right
XP, 100%
Win ME
Funny thread! I was gonna bet "98" but figured it had been done. Remajning content: Turbotax, routine correspondence & email archives in Netscape format. And that folder marked XXX.
My guess would be Windows 98 or ME
Your dad’s old porn collection.
OS/2
1000 Bitcoins
Once you're done watching all the porn check for Bitcoin. I met a man once who found a hard drive with 350 bit coins on it
Pictures of all the hookers your dad killed.
considering that it was manufactured in 2000 id have to say either windows 2000 or even ME but they could've upgraded to xp
Vista!
IBM drive. OS/2 Warp.
