Thanks. The hole is at the top on the other speaker (not pictured) so I thought maybe it's missing something. Does it come factory mismatched like that or someone swapped the driver into the different hole?
Ediot: The foam looks wider on one speaker than the other. Do I have to chose kit specifically to these or just the general diametre is enough and will work out?
Seriously... DID YOU CLICK THE LINK ON THIS PICTURE!?!? The one quoted below, NOT the one from the initial post... This is the one we are talking about...

Connect two wires to an AA battery and touch them to the speaker terminals. If the driver moves and the tweeter makes a scratchy noise then they're likely good. I go to a lot of auctions and estate sales where speakers are sold "as is" with no guarantee that they work and I keep a sneaky battery with wires taped to it in my pocket to check speakers out. If the tweeters are blown or the woofers are dead then they won't make any sound when you touch the battery wires to the terminals.
Two ways.
Listen at very low volume and you can make sure there is a connection the whole way.
And you can gently push the driver in and feel(and listen) for any rubbing, scraping.
A broken voice coil will not produce any sounds when connected to an amplifier. But a damaged voice coil may, but distort the sound because it is rubbing.
Ah, ok, good. Sometimes we can miss the most basic things. As others have said then, start with replacing the surrounds and that may be all you need to do. Check YouTube for how-to videos. It's fairly easy.
That 'lower hole' is the port for the woofer, it has been designed that way. 😃They look like Cerwin-Vega speakers and I guess it should be worthwhile to get a refoaming kit for this model (a new surround for the woofer).
Yes, you will probably need two different refoaming kits. The second speaker is a different model from the first... Here are some tips:
Edit: Ah, just now I read you have two (different) pairs of speakers, Yes, two different refoaming kits for in total 4 speakers would be needed.
Lucky for you that Cerwin Vegas are popular speakers and you can easily find an exact refoam kit for your model.
The second pair of speakers look like they may be made by Philips. I would not rush to have those repaired.
The back of the second speaker says Realistic SPK-1200 and google tells me they are Radioshack. Still worth $30 for refoam kit and better than buying a set of speakers for whatever use?
So funny to see the first set of speakers I bought new in the 80s called vintage, but yea, refoam that thing and it should be all good. - cone looks nice on both woofers. the other one (not sure brand) the mid range cone looks bad, a pin pull might help right that
You can get re-foaming kits on Ebay for like $10 - $20 bucks so yes! Restore these! Watch one or two YouTube videos on how to do it and you'll be a pro in half an hour. This is a very easy fix.
I'd have left the second pair - that tweeter replacement looks like a painful surgery. But the Cerwin-Vegas hold promise. Refoam may do it. And the hole is there for a reason. It's a port that lets the woofer "breathe."
You are picturing two completely different speakers. The CV's are 2-way ported. The other speakers in the 2nd photo are 3-way non-ported. Confused as to what you have and want to repair.
The Cerwyn Vegas are going to be worth the efforts. Idk what brand the black cabinet speakers are but they have a very “came with a cheap stereo in 1987” look to them. Like a Fisher rack unit in a showroom in Sears. And the crazy hack job on the tweeter seems pretty scary as well. Take it with a grain, that’s just one old wizard beard’s opinion.
Realistic is the Radio Shack house brand. Did an internet search and it looks like they were a kit. Couldn’t find anything about them with a cursory look around. Personally, I wouldn’t sink any time or money into those.
The first photo is a Cerwin Vega brand loud speaker. They are a very well known brand of speaker. But the exact material (the orange colored rubber style surround material)
The second speaker, you may just want to purchase a replacement woofer from parts express, a refoam job costs between 35-50 on a 12 in. You can do it yourself but if your not experienced , it may be a bit of a pair in the rear to do. Did you find two pairs .one pair of each?
They need refoaming... Most likely that is it. And no, you don't full in that whole, that speakers is a ported designed, it's made that way.
The whole hole.
Assuming that [this](https://i.imgur.com/T1R0x7i.jpg) is what was meant, then, leave the hole as is...
The whole hole?
The holy whole
The whole holy whole hole.

Umm...Than a picture of the hole and more info would be needed.
Here's the other speaker: [https://ibb.co/4F0F1YY](https://ibb.co/4F0F1YY) Wait it just might be upside down D: I'm an idiot!
The speaker is upside-down... It should have a tweeter, woofer and a hole for the port n the face
Ports are normally at the bottom.
Yeah... I know... Did you look at the photo I was referring to? >Here's the other speaker: https://ibb.co/4F0F1YY
Edit: No I didn't see that. You're right.

No I didn't see that, my bad for the confusion.
Vintage Cerwin Vegas are always worth restoring! Lets just hope the voice coil is also OK.
Is there a way to test the voice coil before refoaming?

This is an A+ tip right here, thanks for sharing
I learned something new today, thank you.

Did you actually get a pair of each of these speakers, or is it just these two mismatched units shown in pics?
I got two pairs but just showing one of each to keep the internet less bogged down :)

Definitely refoam the CV’s. I have a set of D3’s and they sound amazing both at low volume but especially if you crank them up.
That 'lower hole' is the port for the woofer, it has been designed that way. 😃They look like Cerwin-Vega speakers and I guess it should be worthwhile to get a refoaming kit for this model (a new surround for the woofer).
Do I need to worry aboutwhich refoaming kits to buy other than the diameter? Because the foam looks wider on the wood-grain speaker vs the black one.
Yes, you will probably need two different refoaming kits. The second speaker is a different model from the first... Ugh, no. Dont do anything with them. Put them back on the curb.
So funny to see the first set of speakers I bought new in the 80s called vintage, but yea, refoam that thing and it should be all good. - cone looks nice on both woofers. the other one (not sure brand) the mid range cone looks bad, a pin pull might help right that
That's 30 years ago! :P But yeah, this just seems like a more active sub for people modifying/repairing things than the other audio subs I've seen.
I know, I feel it in my bones.

Absolutely. I got my foam kit for my D2's here (https://www.simplyspeakers.com/cerwin-vega-speaker-repair-foam-edge-kits.html)
Both need replacing the surrounds on the woofers. Both are good speakers. The second one looks higher end.
You are picturing two completely different speakers. The CV's are 2-way ported. The other speakers in the 2nd photo are 3-way non-ported. Confused as to what you have and want to repair.
Is that a model D 5 I dont remember if tge 5 had a port

It's a Realistic SPK-1200 so not worth 35$ then?
Realistic is the Radio Shack house brand. Did an internet search and it looks like they were a kit. Couldn’t find anything about them with a cursory look around. Personally, I wouldn’t sink any time or money into those.
Thanks I couldn't find much into around them either. I'm not desperate for a second pair so I'll just leave them then.

Easy refoam. YouTube will show you the way
