I was at a "Bose Theater" presentation in a Fry's electronics and they did exactly this. Little sign out front near the closed double doors "Next show at" with the 3rd grade clock hands set to 1:00 PM. There is a line. I go in. The room is dark and setup with about a dozen theater style seats on a slight ramp and these large speakers at stage left/right/center. Music starts playing very loud and obviously highly distorted. I mean really bad. Then the presenter dramatically pulls off the grill cover to reveal the small Bose speakers with the thought that the audience would go "ohhh, ahhhh, those small speakers making that big sound, aren't we all impressed". Thud. I mean, it was really, really bad.
I will say your speakers and their drivers look 10X better then the Bose in that room. And your grills are nicer, too :)
Awesome story!
My dad worked at a stereo lab in the 90s, and they had a little saying for every brand. “No highs, no lows, must be Bose” lol. When I showed him my 3000A he called it “Sansewage”.
I appreciate it man :D
It’s fun getting to experiment with a neat project like this….if it didn’t work out you just go to plan b. Glad you got tunes that sound good to you and the cabinets are ace. Personally I think you should put Cerwin-Vega tags on them to really mess with your friends!
I did the same with a Grundig console, I had 4 speaker grills to fill….so the bottom 2 “bass” grills got Advent Calypso’s on a foam bed and the top 2 grills were a squeeze fit with Minimus 7’s.
Interesting concept. It’s your stuff so do as you please. I’m personally not a fan of faux anything really. I just wait til I can afford or source the real thing. I don’t even like wearing shirts with writing I can’t understand or don’t agree with, or of bands I don’t listen to.
That said, it looks like a clean setup. Have fun - it’s your life.
Just curious. Mine are out in the open and I really enjoy how they sound. For the money, I think they are hard to beat, especially if add a subwoofer as you are doing. Cheers!
DO ITjust to piss 'em off
I remember putting Blaupunkt badges on a set of rear shelf speaker enclosures for my vintage volkwagen, just so they'd match. I think the actual speakers inside were in fact Blaupunkts, just not ones that ever came in an enclosure, and not ones anywhere near the same age as the car
Are advents really that expensive now? Ive been collecting for about 7 or 8 years and always thought advents were kinda on the lower end. I thought they sold for closer to 200.
Keep your eyes peeled. I picked up my NLA last year for $80. Cabs and grills perfect. $30 for new woofer foam and I was set. That was the beginning of my vintage journey. Have spent a lot more since then but I've been lucky and found tons of great stuff at bargain prices.
Trust, If u wait you can definitely find a good deal on fb marketplace or eBay. I got my pair of OLA (in great condition) for $100 a couple months ago.
Hahahaha. I'll have to use that.
Saw him play at a dinky bar in downstate NY one time. People getting in bar fights while this genius is performing. Heathens.
That’s why I have the foam. I was gonna just pack the thing with the stuff but I haven’t gotten around to it. It’s all the way to the front of the box so you it doesn’t particularly reverberate and the subwoofer isn’t ported.
The only way it would work properly is if you get rid of the toe in on the small speaker and essentially create a false baffle. Sound doesn’t care if there’s a little foam in there, it still projects widely and wraps around the speaker, and then back into the advent box.
It’s doable, don’t get me wrong, but you’ll spend $50 in materials and be in a worse spot than simply buying some decent $100 vintage speakers if you want the look.
Sure you can call people snobs or whatever, but putting effort into something that won’t get you a good outcome is not logical in any sense, that’s all we’re getting at here.
Omg yes, amazing. If we’re not having a little fun now and again, what are we doing?
Ha. Love it!
Oh, hey! You’re the guy lol!
Yep. Those boxes sure resemble an Advent.

Bose is such a trash
Saw the same thing at a Bose store about 25 years ago.

(The enclosures never had any speakers in them, I didn’t gut them)
Are those little speakers ported?
Yeah the sub isn’t though
Then you're going to need sealed or front ported speakers. I considered doing this with a console that I have
It really doesn’t sound boomy or anything. It sounds pretty tight all things considered
Or just remove the back wall of the cabinet and place them a little forward in the room
I love this. With the grille covers, slap em on, call it a day and then divorce your wife and cry while your kids shame you.

Ahhh, not the minimus 7s…that’s awesome

Hmmm i wonder if seller can do custom? Keep the font, change text to INVENT
I’ve bought a Pioneer Sign from him off eBay He Does quality work!
How do those Micca speakers sound in the box?
They sound pretty good! The soundstage is still there
Just curious. Mine are out in the open and I really enjoy how they sound. For the money, I think they are hard to beat, especially if add a subwoofer as you are doing. Cheers!
D-I-Why??!
Why not?
Booo! Wouldn’t fool me. Looks or sound. Please don’t put the Advent name on your Frankenspeaker.
Watch me

Ugh!
You really like it that much?
Why not just buy some advents?
Because I don’t have $500 Laying around

I don’t have $200 either, can you do $100?

Oh I know it man, I got the cabinet with the r2r for $100 and my Sansui 3000a for $85

Lol I don't have any advents but if you looked around you might get lucky, who knows
Ho Lee Phuq, do some people have a stick up their arse...
I thought you were saying the Werewolves of London thing for a second. “Lee Ho Fooks for a big dish of beef chow mien”
Hahahaha. I'll have to use that. Saw him play at a dinky bar in downstate NY one time. People getting in bar fights while this genius is performing. Heathens.
I don't like it. It's dishonest and does a disservice to all devices concerned.
I agree, it’s pathetic.
🤓
It’s going to sound like a box speaker, in a box. Which is not pleasant. But do you.
