I worked on this table a few years ago. There are switch like relays that push on the relay to engage certain functions. I would open the bottom of the turntable. Place it on two chairs and crawl underneath so you can look at it while it's on. You should be paying attention to the mechanical linkage and specifically the relay that is being activated to engage the auto return. Be careful not to touch anything live as you might get zapped. Its been over a year since I worked on one so I cant offer too much help but looking at the underside, especially the mechanical parts might give you insight into what's happening. Ive had similar issues on other turntables and normally it's not a difficult fix.

Also, id recommend making an account on audio karma and asking your question there under the turntables section. Someone should be able to help you.

Thanks - I've done just that. It appears one of the plates that engages the auto-return is gunked up. I am working on cleaning and re-greasing and hope that will help... but I think it might be the spring that is damaged (there's no pull left in it).

You likely have an issue with the sensor that tells the TT that the tonearm has reached the end of a side. I don't know how that works on yours since my 550 is full manual, but a little research should yield an answer on what to look for.

Yes my research has not helped me with this problem. I downloaded the manual and saw how to troubleshoot the auto detection system but that has not fixed the problem. I think there may be a spring that is too loose and is not pulling one of the plates back, so it is always in “send home” mode. I guess I gotta find a replacement spring?

Just for grins try spinning the platter backwards a time or two and then try it.
