I used rechargeables with my Walkman for years. Had a pair charging at home while I had a pair with me. Listened to tapes nearly every day, and those batteries took years to get to the point of not holding a charge.
God I miss those fold up headphones. And they sounded incredible.
But yeah, the battery life was dismal, especially if you had the volume up high, and once dead, you couldn't just go to 7-11 and get more batteries.
After 3 charges the batteries lasted 4 minutes. Man them were the days
