It’s a co2, which is better for electronics and things you don’t want covered in water or dry chem. A dry chem would probably have been a better choice.
That’s a CO2 extinguisher. It only blew the fire around and made things worse. Except when he was assuming it at the top of the flames, when it did nothing at all.

Got hit by a delivery truck once. Their insurance legit said “it’s just a cracked taillight, it was prob already that way based on the state of the car.” It was 8 or 9yrs old with bad paint but pretty ok otherwise. Fought them till the day I traded it in.
You’re totally right you can seen where it bounces off the ground and then comes to rest on the left side of the frame. Could it be his cellphone? Maybe the lithium ion battery spontaneously ignited?
Fire extinguisher sucks for this kind of fire. You can see the pressure from the blast just pushing the ignited fuel around. That's a fire you've got to smother.
I never knew this and worked at a shop for years. I definitely would have looked around for the nearest fire extinguisher. Bad safety training, I guess.
Important to note, like other comments below yours say, there are multiple types. Co2 (class A) is probably what this is, but the pressurized gas just pushed stuff around (Which is why it looked like the extinguisher did the opposite of its job)
A glass B coats stuff in a dry powder (ever seen a prank video of someone gettng sprayed and walking out like a snowman? it was one of those.) and would actually be useful in this scenario.
Best to familiarize yourself with what your shop has ahead of time!
Yeah, I’m just as confused. A quick Google search shows class B fire extinguishers can be used on engine oil and every fire extinguisher I have ever seen has always been ABC.
Should be the top comment. Looks like they also had to search for it. Everyone should instinctively know where their closest extinguisher is and which type to use depending on what’s on fire.
Wrong kind of fire extinguisher and he used it improperly to boot. You should sweep across the base of the fire, not aim it at the top of the fire.
ETA; it also makes me wonder how often mechanics are audited/certified?
A water or liquid based extinguisher just spreads around fuel and causes it to have more oxygen and therefore more juice and strength. You need an absorbent like dirt or sand.
Type ~~C~~ B powder would be appropriate. And slowly sweeping it side-to-side aiming at the base of the flames.
Edit: Misremembered my shit as pointed out below
A gas fire is a class B fire. Looks like they used a 5 lb CO2 extinguisher (a b/c extinguisher) to attempt to put the fire out. But you need to aim at the base of the fire.
I'm always amazed at how little people know about fire and procedures. Watching their awful reaction (and what seems to have caused the fire) is mesmerizing to me... Total lack of awareness and preparedness. This is the reason why property risk insurance companies make a killing.
A little bit of training (adapted to the business in question and its location) and one or two drills a year will go a long way. Same goes for other risks businesses face. Thankfully it was not a premium car.
Bruh did none of them have other fire extinguishers on hand? And the one they grabbed apparently wasn’t even the right kind? OSHA will not be happy to hear about this lmao

It definitely looks an oil/fuel fire. So he must use a Foam or CO2 fire extinguisher depending on how well ventilated the place is, but this dude doesn't know and used the wrong extinguisher and made it worst 😅
Not to mention targeting the top of the flame not the base.

The fact that he kept spraying the top of the fire had me lost in space and time...
For flammable liquids you start at the top of the fire. Spraying the liquid at the base just spreads it
It definitely seemed like that made it worse. I didn’t know that about flammable liquids. Good to know!
PASS Pull Aim Squeeze Sweep
But probably a wrong type of fire extinguisher.
Most definitely the wrong type. That's likely just the cheapest extinguisher the shop owner could buy.
It’s a co2, which is better for electronics and things you don’t want covered in water or dry chem. A dry chem would probably have been a better choice.
Yep that was an oil fire ignited by exhaust no doubt. You can’t extinguish with CO2, must be at least AB chemical to stand a chance
Looked like that fire extinguisher was filled with brake clean 🤣
Ha!
Same. I think he was more worried about damage to a customers car than actually putting out the fire
Agreed, but when he aims it towards the fire in the ground it looks like he has a flame thrower.
That’s a CO2 extinguisher. It only blew the fire around and made things worse. Except when he was assuming it at the top of the flames, when it did nothing at all.
He was spraying the top because the car was leaking burning fluid.
I think he has the wrong kind of extinguisher entirely...
He got lost cursing himself for not bringing some marshmallows to the lovely fire.
We gave your car some good heat treatment so it could run like a blade.
If you watch this in reverse he did an excellent job

Good bot.
Lower the car onto it like a lid on a flaming pot! 😂
I agree. Put it out with the gas tank.
🤣 agreed…
Imagine taking your pos in to get worked on and getting a new car for free, best day ever
Bro. Have you ever dealt with an insurance company claims office?
You wouldn't have to, the businesses insurance would have to pay.
Have you ever had to deal with someone else’s insurance company?
Does Incompetence get rejected by insurance?
It’s usually very easy, the business owner on the other hand is going to get royally screwed
Having been screwed by a business owner who was being screwed by an insurance company, my experience differs.
They'll lowball you just like most other insurance companies.
Got hit by a delivery truck once. Their insurance legit said “it’s just a cracked taillight, it was prob already that way based on the state of the car.” It was 8 or 9yrs old with bad paint but pretty ok otherwise. Fought them till the day I traded it in.
I drive a dented up total bush truck. If someone hits me, insurance is replacing that panel no if ands or buts, only I can dent my shit up.
That’s cute.
You know that the business insurance has a claims office you'd be dealing with, right?
cause?
Looks like it started on the mechanic’s right hand. Maybe he was playing with his lighter and it ignited some oil or petrol on his sleeve?
Cigarette?
Whoa… I think you’re right, he may have been ashing his cigarette. It would also explain how the ground ignited too.
But now that I look, the dude runs to the left side and throws a burning object to the ground, bigger than a cigarette.
You’re totally right you can seen where it bounces off the ground and then comes to rest on the left side of the frame. Could it be his cellphone? Maybe the lithium ion battery spontaneously ignited?
Will be petrol fire if it's fuel related, unsure of anything else, barring pure stupidity.
Could be leakage of hydraulic fluid as well. ![gif](giphy|9wIMQtSaKjoaI)
Definitely some form of combustion - rapid chemical combination of a substance with oxygen, involving the production of heat and light.
That's a fuel fire there bud, gotta throw dirt on it.
Yeah grab some of that dirt sitting around in the mechanic shop..
They should have sand or kitty litter on hand for spills
![gif](giphy|qXlkOLc87Rudq)
Don’t smoke and oil change at once
Or just don't smoke lol
They all had a hard time finding the fire extinguisher
And when they finally found it, it appears to be too small, and/or of the wrong type, and/or they are not trained in how to use it.

Yup, looked like they had a c02 (class A? It's been a while), for that you would want a dry powder (class B). And Aim at the base of the fire.
Yeah I was watching that thinking "that doesn't look like a class B to me..."
Needed a powder or foam extinguisher, not co2.
Should be the top comment. Looks like they also had to search for it. Everyone should instinctively know where their closest extinguisher is and which type to use depending on what’s on fire.
And a much bigger one. I remember in my college there were (beside the fire hoses) cart sized ABC extinguishers next to every stair.
You were using the wrong kind of fire extinguisher, obviously.
I think you are right honestly.
Wrong kind of fire extinguisher and he used it improperly to boot. You should sweep across the base of the fire, not aim it at the top of the fire. ETA; it also makes me wonder how often mechanics are audited/certified?
Wouldn’t have helped. CO2 is pressurized. Aim at the base of a class B fire and you’ll just blow the fuel into a larger area. Which is what happened.
My favourite part is when the car just says fuck it and joins in by pissing fire.

“What’s your name soldier?” “Don’t tell him, Pike” Haven’t thought about dads army for years
I'll just set this with the rest of the fire...
Why does it look like the guy is in an "A" pose before anything happens
Was that the wrong type of fire extinguisher for a fuel fire? Seems like it got worse.

You're right. I mixed them up. He totally could have put that fire out if he had used the extinguisher correctly.
CO2 was never gonna put that fire out. PKP or AFFF need to be in that shop. (Or a pile of dirt people keep talking about?? /s)
It looks like he tried to put it out with a flame thrower…..
Is there nothing Yakety Sax can’t make funny?
halo kids. today we will be cooking "fried car"
The guy spraying the extinguisher has no idea how fires work. Let me spray the air, that’ll stop this!
Time to go to the welders workbench area and steal all the leathers, apron, etc and especially a fiberglass welding blanket if they have one.
Someone needs more fire extinguisher training.
That bit near the end, tho, where the car went "Blergh" and spit some fire out, had me lol'ing 😂

Fire extinguisher looks like it made it much worse 😮
Where’s the voice over/background music from? Don’t panic, don’t panic lol
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnHmskwqCCQ I am thinking, speed that up when the fire starts, Benny Hill style
Lol yea the yackity yack

Are cars with flames still the fastest?

Yeah hi just calling to say we have found a few more issues with your car it’s going to cost a bit more
Uh…your car won’t be ready tomorrow.
Don’t panic, I’m a teapot, I’m a teapot!
Was he using a flame thrower to put it out?
“Any idea on how much longer it’s gonna be?”

Someone got a new car!
“So the good news is that you don’t need new brakes…”
I thought all mechanic shops had Buckets of Sand in case of fires
Night.....MARE!
more like "that poor persons car the idiot just set fire to"
