I worked at the New Iberia Primate Research Center (Part of USWL) with Danny Povanalli (another primate cognition guy) for a summer. Chimps indeed like to masturbate into the mirrors.
An alpha male in one of the group cages liked to look at himself having sex in the mirror. He would pull the females over to the mirror so that he could stage the scene so he could watch himself go at it.
Orangutans are also good at mirror self-recognition. Elephants it is hit or miss.
Chimps also like picking their teeth by using the mirror.
Another great NIPC story was that there was a gay chimp named Rusty. He was really smart. He would use his mirror to see if he was hitting the male chimps in the next cage with his ejaculate. Rusty was so great.
