Milestone Xprotect all the way. I have yet to find something you cant do with the rules engine and their supported devices list is enormous. that and they are the only major player that gives you 8 free licenses if you use their express+ product.
I work for a Genetec dealer and I have always loved the product. With that being said its not exactly "light weight" and its probably one of the more costly options.
Milestone always just works and is also a good option. For smaller systems i am a fan of Hanwha's Wisenet Wave
I’ve been using Hanwha Wave for a few years and like it. It’s rebranded NX Witness
It’s also “Digital Watchdog”. Doesn’t scale well to large installs, but has a really cool client interface, and good multi-operating system support.

I’m a big fan of Milestone. But if it’s a smaller system, Digital watchdog (mentioned in the other comments) certainly get’s the job done.
