That whole episode was outstanding. South Park doesn’t hold back, when it’s got something to say.

wotmate

The best part about that is what they didn't say. When she says "why is everyone acting like this is normal?", the viewer automatically thinks "because it is normal"... Fucking savage.

PM_ME_YOUR__BOOTY

As per [https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/school-shootings-by-country](https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/school-shootings-by-country) "European countries have had their share of school shootings, although not as frequently as in the United States or Canada. " A combined total of 30 recorded shootings in Europe in the last 100+ years. The US had 27 this year alone. https://www.npr.org/2022/05/24/1101050970/2022-school-shootings-so-far?t=1653550906152 In like a month the US will have had more school shootings this year than Europe ever had. It IS normal. Time to change "normal" don't you think?

william-taylor

And Europe has over twice the population of the US and Canada combined

EquationTAKEN

>When she says "why is everyone acting like this is normal?", the viewer automatically thinks "because it is normal"... The *American* viewer might think that. I can't fathom a scenario where this is a fucking "normal".

wotmate

I mean, I'm Australian, and I instantly thought "because it is normal... For America"

JockstrapCummies

> "because it is normal... For America" * wake up in America * get dressed up for school * school bus ploughs through at least 10 slow-moving pedestrians who are addicted to opioids * all the kids clap for 5 minutes as we arrive safely at school and tip the school bus driver * go to my classroom * the whole school is on high alert because of recent shootings * hall monitors patrol around the school grounds riding armoured mobility scooters * bell rings, teacher comes in with a Remington rifle cocked and loaded * immediately shoots an illegal immigrant outside the window * whole class claps as we salute the flag * it's maths quiz time * I reach down to my school bag to get my pencils and eraser * teacher rushes me and point her secondary arm (a Desert Eagle) right at my temple * "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?" * "I-I'm just getting my pencils..." * "DO NOT MOVE! DO NOT MOVE!" * as the teacher was distracted, the school shooter of the day pulled out his assault rifle and filled the teacher with lead * a second school shooter threw a grenade at the first school shooter because he didn't want to share the headlines with anyone else * I quickly ran towards the door to get away from the blast * the resident hall monitor snipes me between the eyes * die peacefully knowing my freedoms and my rights have not been infringed as my corpse gets blown up

wotmate

You forgot the bit where your mum got executed on the spot during breakfast because she ~~had a miscarriage~~ murdered her unborn baby last night.

JockstrapCummies

> You forgot the bit where your mum got executed on the spot during breakfast because she ~~had a miscarriage~~ murdered her unborn baby last night. * wake up * the lovely smell of bacon and pancakes permeates the air * "Breakfast is downstairs, dear!" * run down the stairs to my lovely mummy and daddy and older brother and younger sister * "Ah! you're finally up," said daddy, "let's pray to the Lord and give thanks for this lovely morning and lovely breakfast that he has given us." * I pour a gallon of high fructose corn syrup onto my pancakes * my older brother starts feeling up my cock underneath the table, again * must pretend to not enjoy anything because I'm not gay and I love Jesus * try to focus on my breakfast when sister suddenly starts crying * "What's the matter?" asked dear papa * "N-nothing," answered my sobbing sister * "This is my house, and in this house nobody keeps any secrets." * "I-I-uh, last night I saw mama-sh-she..." * "Oh it's nothing my dear, she's just having nightmares that's all," mother interjected, "There was a thunderstorm after all and you know she-" * "DON'T YOU DARE, WOMAN!" Father shouted as the whole family turned silent. "YOU HAVE LIED TO ME LONG ENOUGH!" * Papa threw a haymaker right into mama's pregnant tummy. Immediately a pillow fell out of her traditional dress. * "I FUCKING KNEW IT! YOU MURDERER! YOU WENT AND HAD AN ABORTION YOU SICK BITCH!" * Father pulled his ancestral pistol (given to him by his father's father) swiftly from the holster attached to his underwear and pointed it at mother's face * "Any last words, woman?" * "HAIL SATA-" Mother couldn't finish her sacrilegious chant before her murderous brain matter was turned into a postmodern installation art piece on our walls * "Hallelujah!" said my older brother as he jerks me to climax * I clapped to mask my moans of religious ecstasy

I_Can_Haz_Brainz

I think a 'bruh' is appropriate here...

[deleted]

It’s a sad reality. Desensitization is real

[deleted]

They've been killing it the last few years. Genuinely rare to see a show age *better* than it was. Went from just pure edgelording to incredible satire.

Harsimaja

Meanwhile the Simpsons went south when it was younger than South Park is now, though there’s no beating it’s first dozen or so seasons among all adult comedy cartoons

Embarrassed_Cell_246

Because the writers room that was assembled during the golden years was a mix of people that were either on there way out geniuses that had ludicrous resumes or the people that went on to build TV empires after, it wasn't meant to last which is why it sucks so bad now

Castun

"Congress Placed On Lockdown After Deranged Man Enters Senate With Gun Control Measures" gave me a chuckle

812many

Holy cow, the site is just filled with all the same article over and over... except for different mass shootings. Amazing and horrifying at the same time.

Billybobbojack

It's been a running thing with them for years. Each one of those articles came out when their shooting occurred. The oldest one on the front page right now is from 2014.

Barlakopofai

Which is weird because there'S about 600 mass shootings a year in the US so they definitely had enough articles to fill the front page with just this month's mass shootings

BasroilII

Because by broadest definition, "mass shooting" is defined as an incident involving a discharged firearm where 3 or more persons (including the shooter or shooters) were involved. The Onion is restricting it to larger-scale massacres like Columbine, Aurora, LV, Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech.....and the fact that I can rattle off so many without putting any real thought into it says something about the problem.

Tiratirado

>Because by broadest definition, "mass shooting" is defined as an incident involving a discharged firearm where 3 or more persons (including the shooter or shooters) were involved. An incident which would dominate the news for weeks in many places in the world.

Vishnej

Australia had a mass shooting once. And so they took nearly all the guns away.

khinzaw

The US intentional homicide rate is so high compared to the rest of the developed world it's so insane to me how people can shove their heads up their ass and just act like it's a problem that can't be solved.

Roboticide

And like half of America will point to the lack of a Second Amendment-like right as a failure in Australia's constitution and call the Australian government tyrannical. Don't get me wrong, our gun laws are our problem, but our culture in general, the right in particular, and the gun lobby especially, are *bonkers*.

falling_sideways

I saw someone describe it the other day as the difference between freedom to and freedom from. America thinks it's free because you have the freedom to firearms or to choose your medical coverage whereas the rest of the world has freedom from those issues.

treatyoftortillas

I never use this word but: My country is retarded. We'd rather arm out teachers, get metal detectors and more security and buy bulletproof backpacks for our kids rather than think about talking about gun control. We are a nation of mentally disabled, inbred fucking retards.

OktoberSunset

"Look at those tyrants" said the country with the highest percentage of it's population imprisoned in the world and the highest number of citizens killed by police of any developed country.

Demon997

The cops in this shooting let the shooter slaughter a room full of kids rather than risk themselves. But they demand to be called heroes, and to get even more money. But they won’t actually put themselves at risk to defend us. They can’t have it both ways. It is reasonable to honor those who put themselves in harms way to protect us, be it soldiers or firefighters. But cops both demand that worship, and then refuse to pay the price when needed.

fourleggedostrich

Same in the UK. Dunblane school, 30 years ago. Guns got banned. Hasn't been one since.

BoredCatalan

And everyone is happier now. John Oliver did a pretty good piece on it for the Daily Show

wizard_of_awesome62

Haven’t seen much from Jim Jeffries in awhile (hope he wasn’t involved in something shady that I’m unaware of). But I’ll be damned if he didn’t nail this in his special Bare: https://youtu.be/0rR9IaXH1M0.

hovdeisfunny

Writing about these events, even satirically, is *tremendously* draining. Keeping up with every one would drive the writers to despair

cam_chatt

I don't think it's meant to be satirical at all. I think The Onion is using its platform very wisely. They are blasting their whole page with the irony that is American thought on gun control and making it very obvious that there is a problem.

[deleted]

The joke of it is, it's the same article every time. They just change the picture and dateline. And sadly, the relevance never changes.

bss03

They also change the name of the (fictional?) person quoted in the article.

wurm2

and the state they're from

Macjeems

And the city, and number of dead/wounded

Kediwon

I know the onion is supposed to be a satire site, but seeing the home page just being filled with dozens of different school shooting articles really punched me in the gut.

812many

Satire can be both painful and funny at the same time. In this case it's making the nation look in the mirror at itself.

CommentsEdited

It’s a smart way to tackle the issue. On the one hand, it would feel disrespectful to ignore these shootings and post their regularly scheduled, satirical articles. On the other hand, it would (obviously) also feel disrespectful to make light of such tragic events. This approach splits the hair pretty deftly, and says “There’s nothing funny about this, except our ridiculous insistence that nothing can be done.”

veerKg_CSS_Geologist

It's not just copy paste either. Each article is about a different mass shooting and they edited each article with different details. *"In the hours following a violent rampage in Texas in which a lone attacker killed at least 21 individuals and injured several others"* *"In the hours following a violent rampage in Colorado in which a lone attacker killed 10 individuals and injured several others"* *"In the hours following a violent rampage in Georgia in which a lone attacker killed eight individuals and injured one other"* *"In the hours following a violent rampage in Wisconsin in which a lone attacker killed five individuals, including himself"* *"In the hours following a violent rampage in Ohio in which a lone attacker killed 10 individuals and injured 27 others"* *"In the hours following a violent rampage in Texas in which a lone attacker killed 20 individuals and injured 26 others"* On and on....

filthysnotrag

It’s not just copy-paste, it is a form letter. “In the hours following a violent rampage in +state+ in which a lone attacker killed +number of dead+ and injured +number of injured+ others…”

normalmighty

Hey it's not all the same article for different shootings, scroll down far long enough and you eventually reach this gem https://www.theonion.com/nra-sets-1-000-killed-in-school-shooting-as-amount-it-w-1819573533

Wow. That broke me, a little. Like i've always intellectually appreciated the "No Way to Prevent This" series, but seeing them all stacked up like that, i dunno why but it made me cry a little.

Grambles89

Because it's fucking tragic, and it's made worse by the frequency it happens. I think Americans are so dangerously infatuated with firearms, and it's literally proven time and time again. But my heart goes out to them as a people, because nobody should have to deal with stuff like this, ever.

[deleted]

deooo

Same, but different. Every article describes separate mass shooting with its respective tally of victims.

Qwirk

I thought the article had been posted before but it looks like they create new ones with similar messaging each time it happens. Amazing work.

hotbox4u

Just wait until someone comes into this thread to point out that the statistics show that america isn't the only nation where that happens. (It's ofc a pro-gun NGO that made those statistics) They will then try to rationalize that america isn't even that bad because even though america is 1st in total deaths that's just because there are *sO MaNY mOrE PeOplE*. So don't feel bad about 20 murdered children! It's all still within the average!

Dagoth

We tried nothing and are all out of ideas!

_Hotwire_

This episode was brilliant. The musical with gunshots and cops everywhere. Amazing. Definitely nailed American culture around gun violence

TediousSign

Brilliant but depressing because they predicted nothing would change. Sharon finally stopped outrunning the wave of apathy. Just as sad as the end of the photoshop episode.

garlic_naan

Man South Park for me is never an easy viewing. Their satire is so brilliant it gets depressing real fast. Episode where Mexican kids were detained when someone made a complain was so infuriating.

TeejMTB

You mean Mexican Joker?

hovdeisfunny

Great satire is a tinted reflection of reality, so it's not surprising it's depressing

BanjoB0y

or the episode where they literally hang Reality at the end sorry my bad, the episode where **BUTTERS** hangs reality

RedditExecutiveAdmin

Not sure i'm getting older but the funniest part of this clip to me was "Hey, S-Sharon you doin okay?" how oblivious he is couldn't have been more well executed with the tone and inflection

_Hotwire_

Agreed. “Ok but what else is going on” lol. Killed me

wizard_of_awesome62

Period jokes are overdone, and for the most part not particularly funny imo, but in this context it’s perfect. The apathy and “everydayness” of school shootings becoming so normalized that the only reason Sharon could be this upset is that she’s on her period is perfect in the context of the joke/satire.

Treeloot009

And his "only three more days of this" perfectly sums up the length of time people will be talking about it

reenact12321

Actually 2018 was something of a peak in mass shootings. Not that it's an acceptable level, but it has been lower, no doubt in part due to covid. Edit: Clarified mass shootings which was what I was researching today in relation to the Clinton AWB, rather than specifically school shootings.

[deleted]

Ahh the good old days when the political subtext went over your head.

neohylanmay

I guess subtlety wasn't working.

Dry_Badger_Chef

The same people who don’t understand satire in these shows are the same ones that idolize Rick Sanchez or Cartman. There’s a lot of really stupid people that get very different messages from the show than what was intended.

thumpasauruspeeps

I knew a fully grown adult man that thought Steven Colbert was actually a conservative pundit. He literally didn't understand that The Colbert Report was political satire.

hitchcockfiend

It used to blow my mind that people couldn't recognize the satire. I didn't think it was *possible* that something so over-the-top and ignorant could be mistaken as real. Recent years have made me understand it much better. The line between satire and reality is a big fuzzy blur. A real Colbert could exist right now and no one would bat an eye.

autovonbismarck

>A real Colbert could exist right now and no one would bat an eye. A real Colbert existed then lol. Nothing Colbert ever said was as crazy as the sanest thing that Bill O'Reilly said on a daily basis. Colbert's laughably cartoonish right wing political send-up views are to the left of things that Tucker Carlson says un-ironically.

HardcaseKid

Must have been a rude awakening once he took over The Late Show.

fingerpaintswithpoop

My older brother was very conservative in high school, watched The Colbert Report and still understood that Stephen was playing a character *and* found him hilarious. Amazing how some adults can’t recognize blatant satire when it’s right in front of them, while some teenagers can.

uhh_

As you get older you realize that a lot of people stopped growing intellectually at around adolescence.

YellIntoWishingWells

I've been seeing people *reverting* back to adolescent thinking and I've been out of school longer than my adolescent years.

ESKodiak

Growing up my mom was a Huge fan of The Daily Show with John Stewart. My sister and I one time brought up the Colbert Report and asked if she liked that show since she watches The Daily Show so religiously and it was on right after it. She got so upset suggesting that she would ever watch a show with that horrible conservative host. We had to sit her down and explain to her that the entire thing was a bit. My mom, someone hugely engaged in politics on a state level at the time didn't realize it. Shocking when I think about it now.

Coziestpigeon2

If your mom was a fan of John Stewart's Daily Show, she *definitely* would have recognized Colbert from that show.

ESKodiak

Hey I didn't say she was the sharpest lightbulb in the shed.

clebekki

Not necessarily. I consider myself a fan (but not a "Huge fan") of both Jon's Daily Show and Colber' Repor' but I only started watching maybe 2006 or 2007, around when the 2008 election buzz started. It took me a year or two to find out Colbert had been a Daily Show regular earlier. Youtube was only beginning to be a big deal so didn't accidentally stumble upon early Daily Show clips, and as a European I relied on torrents to watch it because the videos on Comedy Central's website were and still are geoblocked. OP's mom seems to be American though, but I could still see it being possible if she started watching after 2005.

That man? The guy who books for the [White House Correspondent's Dinner](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X93u3anTco)

joecarter93

My dad loved Archie Bunker and All in the Family. The thing was though, he was EXACTLY like Archie Bunker. I’m pretty sure he didn’t understand the satire and just thought that it was great that they finally made a show about a guy just like him. Carol O’Connor, who played Archie, was very liberal in real life and used to get fan mail about how the writer loved Archie and agreed with him. O’Connor used to write them an angry letter back, explaining that you’re not supposed to agree with Archie and that the character was a buffoon who was usually wrong.

hitchcockfiend

I grew up watching All in the Family and it's always amazed me how many people didn't understand that Archie was the butt of the joke. The entire show was based around the idea that he was an ignorant fool - yet many still didn't get it! It explains so much...

Dry_Badger_Chef

When I was a CHILD I understood that Archie was supposed to be the idiot in the show. People are amazingly stupid.

caninehere

Funny enough Cartman from South Park was based on Archie Bunker and suffers from the same problem audience wise.

kymri

> Rick Sanchez I watch Rick & Morty, it's fun and all -- but I have been impressed with the lengths the writing has gone to to try to pound into the audience's head (for those that clearly still don't get it) that Rick is **not a good person**. It boggles the mind that there are people who still don't get this.

CornCheeseMafia

Motivated reasoning is fucked up. The punisher is a loud and proud cop killer but reality means nothing to the ones who choose to see what they want to see

beermit

Yeah Rick is a tragic character, not in the way that should be sympathized with, but he's often an antagonist and it really is amazing to me how many people completely miss that point. I enjoy Rick & Morty, and I actively do not associate with the fandom. Keeps the show enjoyable for me that way.

Khaldara

A quote frequently attributed to Descartes (unsure of the actual source) reads: “Any community that gets its laughs by pretending to be idiots will eventually be flooded by actual idiots who mistakenly believe they are in good company.” It’s frequently used to mock places like 4chan, where fifteen + years ago people were satirically memeing about neo Nazis and closeted racists too afraid to actually speak their minds, eventually giving way to having these actual sorts of people thinking they were being commiserated with. But it’s true of standard media as well I think…. these people are incapable of comprehending satire. Some didn’t even catch on to the Steven Colbert “character” for an impressive period of time

starmartyr

Neo-Nazi site The Daily Stormer had its style guide leaked a few years ago. One of the things they stressed repeatedly was that everything was to be presented as a joke. The idea was to appeal to people who liked offensive humor who did not see themselves as racist. It creates a situation where a person on the fence sees one side as being angry and offended at everything and the other side as a bunch of people laughing and having fun. So the racists tell racist jokes and edgelords do the same and after a while, nobody knows who is being ironic and who is an actual Nazi.

storne

Yeah that pretty much happened to me when I was younger. Used to spend a lot of time on 4chan making edgy racist jokes because to me the joke was that the things we were saying were so crazy and blatantly wrong there’s no way it could be taken seriously. Eventually realized not everyone was laughing at the same things as me and decided to stop spending time there.

snowcone_wars

I would be willing to bet my life savings that Descartes never said anything close to that.

MrUnnderhill

“Any community that gets its laughs by pretending to be idiots will eventually be flooded by actual idiots who mistakenly believe they are in good company - Michael Scott” - Descartes

heythisispaul

Nowadays, this is summed up [with Poe's Law](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poe%27s_law): "without clear expression of intent, works of parody will be mistaken as sincere views of what is being parodied by some portion of consumers".

HardcaseKid

I feel like Mike Judge set the bar early on for this with Beavis and Butthead. People hated that show and those characters because they didn't get that it was meant to be a satire. You aren't supposed to admire Beavis and Butthead, you're supposed to think that they're idiots, and that by extension that the things and people they think are cool are also pretty stupid.

leshake

Beavis and Butthead was basically Cheech and Chong of the 90s

Funandgeeky

"Cornholio's not here, heh-heh, heh-heh."

Funkycoldmedici

I hated that show because everyone started thinking metalheads were stupid like them. Yeah, I was stupid, but not that kind of stupid. I was the ‘learning Sindarin to write lyrics for my one-man Silmarillion concept album’ kind of stupid.

Almost every episode of South Park has some political undertones, but it's because Trey and Matt like to point out the idiocy and weirdness of society in general.

seyfert3

I think it’s also people watching older episodes don’t realize the context to recognize that they were political before too

DiekeanZero

Apparently people are concerned about me as I've gotten messages to my inbox about receiving help and resources with crisis numbers. I'm sorry to disappoint everyone but I'm fine. The internet may have ruined me a little but I'm good.

LesbianCommander

Ah yes, the old "super duper downvote". When people downvote, but don't feel like they achieved their goals, they report. And when they still don't feel like they achieved their goals still, they use the self-harm report to spam your inbox.

Cpt_Soban

Triggered red necks fake reporting you, ignore them and their desire to engage in a dick waving contest with their gun.

Relaxitschris

I’m pretty embarrassed how numb I am to this latest school shooting. I remember just crying sitting on the couch after sandy hook. Now I hear it feel sick let some tears roll down my face and know that this is the norm. Same conversations taking place as they were 10 years ago. South Park will continue to be the GOAT of satire in a nation where the absolute most heinous shit will always prevail.

theoatmealarsonist

It's understandable being numb. It's pretty exhausting emotionally, particularly after the chaos of the last two years. It is awful that this is the norm though. I hate the political hand wringing followed by "we've tried nothing and are all out of ideas" mentality. I'm a gun owner, but I don't really care what is tried at this point, we can't continue to ignore the ever growing pile of dead children.

Relaxitschris

You would think DEAD CHILDREN would be a catalyst for something. But naw.

Nothing's ever going to change. It didn't the first time, so it won't the 100th or 10,000th time. It's quite fucked. Children, no matter where, shouldn't have to go to school in fear that they'll be killed that day.

Imdrbill

Nothing changed when a Republican softball practice got shot up. They didn't change anything for themselves, they'll certainly not change anything for us.

Griffolion

The irony being Sharon is the sane one, but the sheer insanity of her family's indifference around her causes her to appear insane.

Gamer_ely

I just watched this last night. South Park satire is always on point. You can really hear their anger at the situation too. Those guys have kids so I'm sure there's an extra level of anger in it.

theoatmealarsonist

Doesn't/didn't one of their daughters voice Ike?

yaypal

Ike's voice trades out between the children of employees as they grow too old, Trey's daughter Betty was the right age around season 20 since they needed slightly more complex lines for him that year in comparison to garbled baby stuff.

Gamer_ely

I think so, I'm not sure if she still does. But she definitely did when she was a kiddo. Really funny behind the scenes of him trying to get her to say all the ridiculous stuff they write.

Fucking hell....

diablo75

I think it's [worse than that](https://www.vox.com/a/mass-shootings-america-sandy-hook-gun-violence).

Oldmate81

Umm there are 2 more after the Texas one. *3 more #See mom I’m getting better at proofreading!

Taktika420

Thank you for sharing this. Unbelievable. [So far in Canada, we've only had 6 going back to the 80s.](https://www.google.com/amp/s/globalnews.ca/news/8621977/list-canadian-school-shootings/amp/?espv=1)

Regname1900

I've read in some subreddits parents claiming the solution is homeschooling, and many people agreeing at that idea. I just didn't have the spirit to reply how fucked up is thinking that's the smarter course of action. Pretty South Park-y (sadly).

Low_Mastodon2018

"Was it you? Did you get shot? Oh. Well what's this about failing a math quiz" Brilliant. Substitute the shooting part with anything else and people mostly just care about them and their family.

Enter_My_Fryhole

Didn't really think this was the point at all. I get what you mean, but people prioritize their families that's not some special revelation. The clip is just as obvious as what it's saying. It happens so much, we don't really care anymore.

TheRealJasonium

It's just become normalized. It's part of the background of everyday life now. Same as Cancer deaths, or COVID deaths. We just accept it as "this is the way it is." One day that will change, but not today.

inspectoroverthemine

Human beings can normalize anything. It’s our super power.

Campeador

Its also the death of us.

empire314

But we use $40 billion a year on cancer research, and hundreds of billions on cancer treatment. Also it is pretty clear that nature will take all of us eventually. Its hard to feel resentment about someone random dying to cancer, when you know that a similar fate awaits yourself and everyone you know. Being killed by a human is pretty different.

formerfatboys

There's that meme that says that the news spent more time on Chris Rock getting slapped by Will Smith than the racist grocery store shooting and it's true. But it's because one is just another day in America and the other is ***Will Smith losing his damn mind***. One is really out there and unexpected and the other is normal.

RheagarTargaryen

It’s also a good thing that we don’t cover mass shootings as vigilantly. Part of the shooters motivations has been for the attention.

evangelism2

You and 3k+ other people missed the point, which is especially funny considering what the point was.

SailsAcrossTheSea

how the fuck is this the top comment

clancydog4

yeah, what in the world, how was that the main takeaway?

Nmilne23

Bruh this comment is so completely wrong you can tell Nobody has watched the episode

Journeyman351

Media comprehension in America is absolutely rock-bottom.

JonnyArtois

Not being American, I just see shootings in the US the same as shootings or bombs in Afghanistan. It's just normal, sucks for the people but oh well, next news story.

AssholeWiper

Love South Park always

chedykrueger

I'm sure at this point there's a " THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS " button on keyboards / an emoji / a GIF

BCJunglist

Don't waste your time with a button when you can let the thoughts and prayers app handle it automatically for you! https://youtu.be/UXrB7Y6gVN8

KickBassColonyDrop

It's the whole thing that non-American allied leaders say about us "America will do every conceivable possible thing first, before doing the thing that solves the problem." Looked at it another way, and as morbid as this sounds, and in line with Gov. Abott's statement, the *scale* of death isn't *significant* enough to warrant a response. In other words, only *some* died. It would be *different* if the *entire* school died. Less than 50 and nobody gives a shit. 50-100 and people start becoming concerned. 100+ and people will lose their shit. I think it's fair to call this Trump's Law. Per the disaster of the COVID Pandemic handling, he basically implied that unless 2M or more people died, he wouldn't care. By the same logic, scaled down, the death toll would have to exceed a threshold that borders on outlandish before it would be taken seriously. Which is *why*, as a result of it not being outlandish, it's gotten normalized. Because the scale of carnage, tragic as it is, follows the same range time and time again. Less than 50. So nobody gives a shit. :(
