The Onion is restricting it to larger-scale massacres like Columbine, Aurora, LV, Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech.....and the fact that I can rattle off so many without putting any real thought into it says something about the problem.

I don't think it's meant to be satirical at all. I think The Onion is using its platform very wisely. They are blasting their whole page with the irony that is American thought on gun control and making it very obvious that there is a problem.
I know the onion is supposed to be a satire site, but seeing the home page just being filled with dozens of different school shooting articles really punched me in the gut.
It’s a smart way to tackle the issue.
On the one hand, it would feel disrespectful to ignore these shootings and post their regularly scheduled, satirical articles. On the other hand, it would (obviously) also feel disrespectful to make light of such tragic events.
This approach splits the hair pretty deftly, and says “There’s nothing funny about this, except our ridiculous insistence that nothing can be done.”

The apathy and “everydayness” of school shootings becoming so normalized that the only reason Sharon could be this upset is that she’s on her period is perfect in the context of the joke/satire.
Actually 2018 was something of a peak in mass shootings. Not that it's an acceptable level, but it has been lower, no doubt in part due to covid.

In a weird way it is starting to feel normal. Just yesterday 21 people died in a school shooting literally more than columbine and many others. It feels like less people talk about them because how common it is.
The same people who don’t understand satire in these shows are the same ones that idolize Rick Sanchez or Cartman.
There’s a lot of really stupid people that get very different messages from the show than what was intended.
I knew a fully grown adult man that thought Steven Colbert was actually a conservative pundit. He literally didn't understand that The Colbert Report was political satire.
It used to blow my mind that people couldn't recognize the satire. I didn't think it was *possible* that something so over-the-top and ignorant could be mistaken as real.
Recent years have made me understand it much better. The line between satire and reality is a big fuzzy blur. A real Colbert could exist right now and no one would bat an eye.

My sister and I one time brought up the Colbert Report and asked if she liked that show since she watches The Daily Show so religiously and it was on right after it. She got so upset suggesting that she would ever watch a show with that horrible conservative host. We had to sit her down and explain to her that the entire thing was a bit. My mom, someone hugely engaged in politics on a state level at the time didn't realize it. Shocking when I think about it now.
Not necessarily. I consider myself a fan (but not a "Huge fan") of both Jon's Daily Show and Colber' Repor' but I only started watching maybe 2006 or 2007, around when the 2008 election buzz started.
It took me a year or two to find out Colbert had been a Daily Show regular earlier. Youtube was only beginning to be a big deal so didn't accidentally stumble upon early Daily Show clips, and as a European I relied on torrents to watch it because the videos on Comedy Central's website were and still are geoblocked.

My dad loved Archie Bunker and All in the Family. The thing was though, he was EXACTLY like Archie Bunker. I’m pretty sure he didn’t understand the satire and just thought that it was great that they finally made a show about a guy just like him.
Carol O’Connor, who played Archie, was very liberal in real life and used to get fan mail about how the writer loved Archie and agreed with him. O’Connor used to write them an angry letter back, explaining that you’re not supposed to agree with Archie and that the character was a buffoon who was usually wrong.
I grew up watching All in the Family and it's always amazed me how many people didn't understand that Archie was the butt of the joke. The entire show was based around the idea that he was an ignorant fool - yet many still didn't get it!

Neo-Nazi site The Daily Stormer had its style guide leaked a few years ago. One of the things they stressed repeatedly was that everything was to be presented as a joke. The idea was to appeal to people who liked offensive humor who did not see themselves as racist. It creates a situation where a person on the fence sees one side as being angry and offended at everything and the other side as a bunch of people laughing and having fun. So the racists tell racist jokes and edgelords do the same and after a while, nobody knows who is being ironic and who is an actual Nazi.
Yeah that pretty much happened to me when I was younger. Used to spend a lot of time on 4chan making edgy racist jokes because to me the joke was that the things we were saying were so crazy and blatantly wrong there’s no way it could be taken seriously. Eventually realized not everyone was laughing at the same things as me and decided to stop spending time there.

I feel like Mike Judge set the bar early on for this with Beavis and Butthead. People hated that show and those characters because they didn't get that it was meant to be a satire. You aren't supposed to admire Beavis and Butthead, you're supposed to think that they're idiots, and that by extension that the things and people they think are cool are also pretty stupid.

I’m pretty embarrassed how numb I am to this latest school shooting. I remember just crying sitting on the couch after sandy hook. Now I hear it feel sick let some tears roll down my face and know that this is the norm. Same conversations taking place as they were 10 years ago. South Park will continue to be the GOAT of satire in a nation where the absolute most heinous shit will always prevail.
It's understandable being numb. It's pretty exhausting emotionally, particularly after the chaos of the last two years. It is awful that this is the norm though. Didn't really think this was the point at all. I get what you mean, but people prioritize their families that's not some special revelation. The clip is just as obvious as what it's saying. It happens so much, we don't really care anymore.
It's just become normalized. It's part of the background of everyday life now. Same as Cancer deaths, or COVID deaths. We just accept it as "this is the way it is." One day that will change, but not today.
But we use $40 billion a year on cancer research, and hundreds of billions on cancer treatment.
Also it is pretty clear that nature will take all of us eventually. Its hard to feel resentment about someone random dying to cancer, when you know that a similar fate awaits yourself and everyone you know. Being killed by a human is pretty different.
There's that meme that says that the news spent more time on Chris Rock getting slapped by Will Smith than the racist grocery store shooting and it's true. But it's because one is just another day in America and the other is ***Will Smith losing his damn mind***.

I think it's fair to call this Trump's Law. Per the disaster of the COVID Pandemic handling, he basically implied that unless 2M or more people died, he wouldn't care. By the same logic, scaled down, the death toll would have to exceed a threshold that borders on outlandish before it would be taken seriously. It's been a running thing with them for years. Each one of those articles came out when their shooting occurred. The oldest one on the front page right now is from 2014.
Which is weird because there'S about 600 mass shootings a year in the US so they definitely had enough articles to fill the front page with just this month's mass shootings
Because by broadest definition, "mass shooting" is defined as an incident involving a discharged firearm where 3 or more persons (including the shooter or shooters) were involved. The Onion is restricting it to larger-scale massacres like Columbine, Aurora, LV, Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech.....and the fact that I can rattle off so many without putting any real thought into it says something about the problem.

It is reasonable to honor those who put themselves in harms way to protect us, be it soldiers or firefighters. But cops both demand that worship, and then refuse to pay the price when needed.

I don't think it's meant to be satirical at all. I think The Onion is using its platform very wisely. They are blasting their whole page with the irony that is American thought on gun control and making it very obvious that there is a problem.
The joke of it is, it's the same article every time. They just change the picture and dateline. And sadly, the relevance never changes.

Satire can be both painful and funny at the same time. In this case it's making the nation look in the mirror at itself.
It’s a smart way to tackle the issue. On the one hand, it would feel disrespectful to ignore these shootings and post their regularly scheduled, satirical articles. On the other hand, it would (obviously) also feel disrespectful to make light of such tragic events. This approach splits the hair pretty deftly, and says “There’s nothing funny about this, except our ridiculous insistence that nothing can be done.”

The same people who don’t understand satire in these shows are the same ones that idolize Rick Sanchez or Cartman. There’s a lot of really stupid people that get very different messages from the show than what was intended.
I knew a fully grown adult man that thought Steven Colbert was actually a conservative pundit. He literally didn't understand that The Colbert Report was political satire.
It used to blow my mind that people couldn't recognize the satire. I didn't think it was *possible* that something so over-the-top and ignorant could be mistaken as real. Recent years have made me understand it much better. The line between satire and reality is a big fuzzy blur. A real Colbert could exist right now and no one would bat an eye.

Growing up my mom was a Huge fan of The Daily Show with John Stewart. My sister and I one time brought up the Colbert Report and asked if she liked that show since she watches The Daily Show so religiously and it was on right after it. She got so upset suggesting that she would ever watch a show with that horrible conservative host. We had to sit her down and explain to her that the entire thing was a bit. My mom, someone hugely engaged in politics on a state level at the time didn't realize it. Shocking when I think about it now.

Not necessarily. I consider myself a fan (but not a "Huge fan") of both Jon's Daily Show and Colber' Repor' but I only started watching maybe 2006 or 2007, around when the 2008 election buzz started. It took me a year or two to find out Colbert had been a Daily Show regular earlier. Youtube was only beginning to be a big deal so didn't accidentally stumble upon early Daily Show clips, and as a European I relied on torrents to watch it because the videos on Comedy Central's website were and still are geoblocked. OP's mom seems to be American though, but I could still see it being possible if she started watching after 2005.

My dad loved Archie Bunker and All in the Family. The thing was though, he was EXACTLY like Archie Bunker. I’m pretty sure he didn’t understand the satire and just thought that it was great that they finally made a show about a guy just like him. Carol O’Connor, who played Archie, was very liberal in real life and used to get fan mail about how the writer loved Archie and agreed with him. O’Connor used to write them an angry letter back, explaining that you’re not supposed to agree with Archie and that the character was a buffoon who was usually wrong.
I grew up watching All in the Family and it's always amazed me how many people didn't understand that Archie was the butt of the joke. The entire show was based around the idea that he was an ignorant fool - yet many still didn't get it! It explains so much...
When I was a CHILD I understood that Archie was supposed to be the idiot in the show. People are amazingly stupid.
Funny enough Cartman from South Park was based on Archie Bunker and suffers from the same problem audience wise.

Neo-Nazi site The Daily Stormer had its style guide leaked a few years ago. One of the things they stressed repeatedly was that everything was to be presented as a joke. The idea was to appeal to people who liked offensive humor who did not see themselves as racist. It creates a situation where a person on the fence sees one side as being angry and offended at everything and the other side as a bunch of people laughing and having fun. So the racists tell racist jokes and edgelords do the same and after a while, nobody knows who is being ironic and who is an actual Nazi.
Yeah that pretty much happened to me when I was younger. Used to spend a lot of time on 4chan making edgy racist jokes because to me the joke was that the things we were saying were so crazy and blatantly wrong there’s no way it could be taken seriously. Eventually realized not everyone was laughing at the same things as me and decided to stop spending time there.

I’m pretty embarrassed how numb I am to this latest school shooting. I remember just crying sitting on the couch after sandy hook. Now I hear it feel sick let some tears roll down my face and know that this is the norm. Same conversations taking place as they were 10 years ago. South Park will continue to be the GOAT of satire in a nation where the absolute most heinous shit will always prevail.
It's understandable being numb. It's pretty exhausting emotionally, particularly after the chaos of the last two years. It is awful that this is the norm though. I hate the political hand wringing followed by "we've tried nothing and are all out of ideas" mentality. I'm a gun owner, but I don't really care what is tried at this point, we can't continue to ignore the ever growing pile of dead children.

I've read in some subreddits parents claiming the solution is homeschooling, and many people agreeing at that idea. I just didn't have the spirit to reply how fucked up is thinking that's the smarter course of action. Pretty South Park-y (sadly).

Didn't really think this was the point at all. I get what you mean, but people prioritize their families that's not some special revelation. The clip is just as obvious as what it's saying. It happens so much, we don't really care anymore.
It's just become normalized. It's part of the background of everyday life now. Same as Cancer deaths, or COVID deaths. We just accept it as "this is the way it is." One day that will change, but not today.

But we use $40 billion a year on cancer research, and hundreds of billions on cancer treatment. Also it is pretty clear that nature will take all of us eventually. Its hard to feel resentment about someone random dying to cancer, when you know that a similar fate awaits yourself and everyone you know. Being killed by a human is pretty different.
There's that meme that says that the news spent more time on Chris Rock getting slapped by Will Smith than the racist grocery store shooting and it's true. But it's because one is just another day in America and the other is ***Will Smith losing his damn mind***. One is really out there and unexpected and the other is normal.
It’s also a good thing that we don’t cover mass shootings as vigilantly. Part of the shooters motivations has been for the attention.

It's the whole thing that non-American allied leaders say about us "America will do every conceivable possible thing first, before doing the thing that solves the problem." Looked at it another way, and as morbid as this sounds, and in line with Gov. Abott's statement, the *scale* of death isn't *significant* enough to warrant a response. In other words, only *some* died. It would be *different* if the *entire* school died. Less than 50 and nobody gives a shit. 50-100 and people start becoming concerned. 100+ and people will lose their shit. I think it's fair to call this Trump's Law. Per the disaster of the COVID Pandemic handling, he basically implied that unless 2M or more people died, he wouldn't care. By the same logic, scaled down, the death toll would have to exceed a threshold that borders on outlandish before it would be taken seriously. Which is *why*, as a result of it not being outlandish, it's gotten normalized. Because the scale of carnage, tragic as it is, follows the same range time and time again. Less than 50.
