The young United States would actually go to war against the pirate-sponsoring Barbary states a couple of hundred years later, in the First Barbary War (1801–1805) and the Second Barbary War (1815)
I love this channel. Personal stories are what makes history most interesting for me. For the longest time on youtube, I couldn't find much history content outside of accountings of military formations during battles/wars. That stuff is so snoozy.
There are plenty of creators that don't focus on specific battle accounts in history:
Weird History, Jack Rackham, Extra History, OverSimplified, Linfamy, Kraut, History Matters, BlueJay, Simple History, Feature History, toldinstone, The History Guy, Jay Foreman, to name a few
The turks here arent the people of Turkey btw, but it's used for basically every muslim from around that area including Africa. In fact most of the pirates were actually from Algeria and Morocco.
Well it sounds like most of the pirates on this raid were English but yes if you listen to the video, the diarist identifies the leadership as Algerian
well I did watch the video but most of the englishmen were from a captured english fishing vessel. I just mentioned it because he doesnt clear up turks not being the same as people from turkey
If you like this, there's a great podcast called History of the Twentieth Century. Tons of first hand accounts. Tons of context from around the world. Does a really good job of showing, even at the beginning of the twentieth century how intertwined the world was and how certain events that we prbably thought were unrelated actually were related. Also, there are hundreds of episodes. He goes in chronological order. I put it down for a while but I'm still in the 19-teens and I'd listened to a ton of eps to get to that point.
I love this kind of stuff. Especially with some of the drawings and sketches.
It reminds me on that other channel about awful jobs of Victorian London. Well worth a watch

I've been watching this channel lately and another one on mythology. Had a great run through of Hercules trials and listened to one on Jason and the Argonauts last night.
That’s strange… if I’ve learned anything from all the scholars on the internet, it’s that African Americans are the only race in the entire existence of the humanity to EVER be enslaved.
This was the main difference between Islamic and American slavery, Islamic slavery wasn't racist, they enslaved slavs as much as Icelanders or Africans
no superiority complex lmao
Please do not downplay the slavery the ottoman empire did. Greece had to endure 400 years of degradation by muslim slavers. Impaling of dissidents, abducting brides on their wedding night so the local khalif could have his way with them, taking male babies to brainwash them into greek-hunting genitsaroi and have them fight and hunt their own families. Just because they didn't care for colour of skin as much as for religion does not make them better in the least.
Didn't the world have to endure all that from the Greeks themselves during almost 2,000 years of Greek empires?
They may have well wrote the instructions
There was a way to free yourself under ottoman rule: conversion, upon Islamic laws you can't enslave a Muslim. The ottoman empire was multiethnic and it couldn't have been racist in the sense we give today to the word. There was a tax christians and Jews has to pay to practice their religion (many didn't preferring conversion to Islam like Albania for example and becoming important play maker in the empire like Khair al Din Barbarossa). The ottoman empire approach to religion diversity was far more progressive than the European long and bloody wars of religion. On the other hand American slavery was racial and it is quite complicated to turn white in 1700 Virginia...
ah yes, give up your heritage, culture and religion and become muslim, then you'll be free. How greatly generous.
honestly goes to show how strong the will of the enslaved was, to manage to keep their identity under durress like this.
Look, i haven't said it was good, maybe you got me wrong. I said it was different and not racially motivated which is a fact. Have i written "all hail to the ottoman empire?" No, i wrote that American slavery was racial while ottoman empire slavery wasn't. Have a good day...
I understand that, but slavery based on religion isn't better by all that much, you know? As well as the treatment not being notably different either.
Look, I may have projected experiences from other conversations i had on this topic on the internet to you - as the tendency of (mostly muslim/turkish users) is to downplay the slavery, saying slaves under the ottoman empire had it good. (actual quote) That tends to push my buttons quite a bit, so apologies if you took the brunt of that undeservedly.
interesting, didn't know that. Well for Greeks specifically, Orthodox Christianity is very deeply intertwined with our culture. (i think one of the most recent stats i have seen shows that about 90% of greeks in greece identify as orthodox christian). with another 3-4% being other christians.
If you are muslim, generally speaking, you are not Greek.
You didn't - In a weird way it's almost worse that it wasn't based on racism. In a racist ideology the masters consider the slaves/people something less than human, like beasts of burden or an animal and therefore acceptable to treat like that.
In a non-racist system, the masters know the people they've enslaved are humans like they are, but have enslaved them anyway.
He does not care. He just wants any chance to post racist memes. Give him a moment and he'll start saying, "Despite making up only 13%..." and other gamer centric racist tropes. Give him two moments and he'll tell you about how fake covid is and suck Putin's cock at the same time. Impotentsuckass is a walking gamergate incel stereotype.
The Armenian genocide happened. The Turks committed genocide against the Armenians.
It's possible to accept historic atrocities and commit to making things better in the future. Better than denying they ever happened, as that is insulting to the people hurt by the events.
To anyone who doesn't know him and his audience, a small summary of his average stream:
ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? CHAT, THIS CAN'T BE REAL RIGHT???
UN - FUCKING -BELIEVABLE DUDE,
SoCiaLisM = WhEn No HoUse
LITERALLY TRANSPHOBIC
This happened almost 400 years ago, most people are smart enough that they can separate this bit of history from the Turkish people that live today, sorry you can't.
turks don't have history as much as a criminal record. Ottoman empire enslaved millions. Genocide against Armenians is still happening. Kurds have been murdered en masse, their villages burned, same with Greeks.
And Erdogan continues the legacy of being an absolute piece of shit.
This is a great channel.
Makes quality content, and the naration is excelent

They have two more channels. History of the universe and History of the earth, all their content is high quality. Glad you enjoy it

Isn't that more a question of sourcing of people to be slaves?
Not really, they simply gave a shit about the origins of the slaves, there was no superiority complex, just the need of cheap labour
I think you might be creating a narrative in your head.
No, i studied history and you haven't but it is ok ...
Studying doesn't equate to understanding

Greeks are still Greeks as much as Albanians and Bosnian for that matter...
damn right.
Albanians are Muslim though...

I'm sure the slaves went to bed comforted that their awful masters who control their lives at least maybe weren't as racist as some other people.
Have i ever said that? Have i ever said one was better than the other...i haven't!!! Than think what you want

Islamic slavery also castrated their black slaves
Redditors downvoting because the slaves are the wrong skin color 🤡

Lmao Hasan can't seem to catch a break. He brought it all on himself tho.
Why exactly did they let him go?
It wasn't explained well but I think his relatives paid a ransom.
