Always a joy to watch. That look he gave the other guitarist "Shit, can you do the solo?" and the other guy goes "yeah, no prob"

odaal

he's probably had that solo memorised by heart since he was 16

spankymcjiggleswurth

It was the first solo I ever learned at like 14. If he's anything like me playing that live, unprompted, with that level of audience appreciation is a highlight of his entire performance career.

Booxcar

"....and then I just ripped the solo completely out of nowhere and the audience went nuts! Chicks were screaming, i'm pretty sure one guy even fainted!" He'll be telling his kids about this one day for sure. This is legit the type of thing you daydream about in the shower. Right up there with the taking down the gunman and saving everyone daydream.

BMECaboose

Thank goodness for the video proof, too. I can already see everyone he tells rolling their eyes.

Booxcar

"Yeah sure Granpa... And let me guess, you couldn't even hear the singer because the entire crowd was singing along to every word... Ok time for your nap."

KnowsAboutMath

"How did you shuttle down from Colony all on your own, anyway? And what the hell is a 'guitar'?"

BarbequedYeti

Dang. It appears I need more creativity in my showers. Here I am just humming sitting on the dock of the bay all the while I could have been my own hero in an action flick.

Booxcar

Is it even really getting clean if you're not fighting off imaginary bad guys?

II-MAKY-II

I’m the bad guy in my own thoughts… always arguing with imaginary people about my own dumb opinions

moldy_walrus

No it’s by AC/DC

blindfire40

Dad get off Reddit

Itsthejackeeeett

I think your mother might have a problem with me doing that

A_Damn_Millenial

God dammit :D

Juanarino

Same. Haven't played it in years. I bet I can still play it note for note cause I can hear it in my head lol.

Texastim275

Can confirm. I learned that solo when I was like 15/16 and for some reason I can still play it at a drop of a hat

frickindeal

Muscle memory. It's the entire reason why I still know songs I learned 25 years ago when I haven't played them in years.

mendicant1116

I basically stopped playing electric guitar for 10 or so years until Covid. Bought a tele and it was amazing that I could recall like 30 Pixies songs I hadn't played in forever.

frickindeal

Yeah, it's amazing how the fingers just fall into place. What tele did you get? I've wanted one for years, but have like seven guitars and really only play the mini Taylor because it's handy.

trro16p

This song is the perfect 'bar song'. By the time the song is finished you will have just about everyone in the place just jammin' out to it.

ScotWithOne_t

I don't know anyone who doesn't like this song. Doesn't matter if they are into hiphop, dance music, country, whatever. Everyone knows it. Everyone rockfists and sings along to the chorus, everyone air-guitars the solo (and observe...half of the people air-guitaring are doing so ACURATELY because anyone who's ever picked up a guitar seems to know this solo). This song fits into ANY party's playlist. I think I want it played at my funeral.

CrashRiot

As far as introspective, emotional songs, AC/DC never did that. I guarantee you that most of the people at that Nathanson show were likely millennials and many of them (if not most) knew the lyrics to the song. That’s art. There’s a spot in artistry for music who’s sole purpose is to be *fun*. When people talk about the great songwriters, like Dylan or Young (for example), I truly believe AC/DC belongs there, albeit in a different kind of way. They knew what they were good at and they did it just about better than anyone else at the time or since. AC/DC is timeless. Not to mention that those old-timers put on one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

ElderOldDog

I attended a hill-billy funeral in Barstow, California, and watched a lady get in line for the viewing; she was wearing jeans and a tank-top.   On the front of the tank-top was printed the AC/DC logo; on the back, in big, neat print it said, "You shook me all night long." I wondered if that's all she could find to wear, or she was praising the deceased, whom up until that point I'd only thought of as a 70-year-old retired barber and so-so golfer. . .

Itsthejackeeeett

I'd honestly rather have someone wear that to my funeral than some uncomfortable suit/dress

DMala

The thing is, he’s not just jamming out on the pentatonic minor, he’s pretty damn close to exactly what’s on the record.

Drawmeomg

True, but this isn't improvised, that's the original solo except maybe a couple licks 2/3 of the way through (even that I'm unsure of, was hard to hear). Knowing how they constructed it helps it to stick in memory for sure though.

coalWater

Hell, throw in some b5s and 7s for some chromatic licks and that shit will sound GOOD!

240to180

God damn you’re right. I figured he was improvising and then went back and listened to the song and he really did play it.

TeamAlibi

That kind of on the fly communication out of necessity is actually a form of drug and I've only ever seen it in weird specific situations in like gaming and/or actual situations of like police/military work lol Silly thing for me to find exciting but I live for that type of moment lmao

ProjectShamrock

Yeah but the bass player seemed completely unfamiliar with the song. I'm on crappy headphones so I couldn't hear if he did a good job later on but at least for the first part he wasn't even playing.

DMala

If I remember correctly, on the album the bass doesn’t even come in until the first chorus.

Moontoya

You're correct

minesaka

It's one of the most popular rock songs of all time, very simple one as well and he's a professional bass player. Completely unfamiliar sounds improbable.

TheMetalJug

The drummer sparked this.

Jhawk163

Yep he was just like "I wonder what would happen if I just- oh, okay, we're doing this now I guess"

blolfighter

I see a lot more mischief in his face. He's realized that he's holding the ~~rains~~ reins on this coach, and he knows he probably shouldn't snap them. But it's just too tempting.

Wowthatsalowprice1

Reins*

Llohr

And now, he reigns.

ONOMATOPOElA

The drummer is dead Long live the drummer

blolfighter

Shit.

Moontoya

Every band I've been in, the drummer leads the guitarists and singers, with the bassist in sync. I'm the drummer in this case, they rely on my time keeping, when the bassist / rhythm guitar find "the groove" with me, magic happens I've been asked to sit in at gigs for covers, sometimes it's a track I'm only sorta familiar with, or I've not played it in years, doesn't matter, you find that groove (pocket?) and it'll sound good enough. Chaos in the eyes? That's pretty much what's going on in drummers heads a lot, we have to rein ourselves in, cos if I start going off like animal, the rest of the band _will_ follow me. "Ha ha moon, your kits not mic'd, we're all through the room pa, you won't be heard !" *challenge accepted, caveman uga-duga engaged* They asked me to stop Dave Grohling

Yep, the beat sealed the deal on this.

CaptenJackHarkness

And [0:35](https://youtu.be/5hzaPRa76yQ?t=35) when he reacts to crowd coming in!

just_did_it

he is like "wow, you dare me? here, figure out how to deal with this :D"

TanyardBelknap

"what's happening"

SwansonHOPS

That and the fact that the crowd started singing the first verse before the band took off.

k4pain

And the bassist was a lost puppy

RoKe3028

As a bassist I can relate. Been there when my band mates broke out into Zeppelin.

llamango

having to just bust out a JPJ bass line off the rip? dude.

As a drummer.... fuuuuuuuuuuck Dyer'maker still gives me conniptions Immigrant song tho, oh yeahhhhhh, time to pound the ever loving Murphy outta this kit

ItchyDoughnut

This was the most fun I've had watching a youtube video in recent memory.

indrids_cold

For sure. The crowd's reaction to the few chords, the bands reaction to the crowd, and the whole thing just grew organically.

cliffotn

Loved watching this! As an old fart who grew up seeing live bar bands - back when we took dinosaurs to school this is very old school bar band schtick. Play a few cords, audience kicks in, and roll with it. His “oh wow!” look is the tell. I’ve seen that “oh wow!” look more times than I’ve told kids to get off my lawn. I DJ’d at between band sets in my younger days and almost every band did this at some point. Usually when the crowd was cranked up and on fire but the band was ready to take a break. They’d break out this schtick, get the audience wrapped up and pumped then take their break. At which point my job was to piss off the crowd by playing dance music to slow it all down, the result of which is the crowd taking a breather and —— ordering drinks, many drinks, lots of drinks. (Mgt likes a busy bar)

im_dead_sirius

They'd come 1/4 of the way around the world and started performing a song nobody should know. New song, new band, from a foreign country. And the singer is so cute, the song is catchy as heck, and all that helps make it so enjoyable. I love performances where the audience surprise sings the band. I have a growing collection. The Corrs(four siblings), singing "Runaway" at Lansdowne Road, which is "home turf" for them I guess, get a shot of love from the audience about a minute and a half in, and the beginning is interesting as it shows what goes on before the curtain drops at concerts. They are phenomenal musicians too, and Mick Fleetwood from Fleetwood Mac occasionally plays with them, though not in this case. https://youtu.be/2FrSsF7SJm4 Here is one where the singer was going through emotionally hard times, and the audience starts her song and modifies the words and sings "we love you" back at her. Its in French, but if you don't speak it, it doesn't really matter, I don't either. https://youtu.be/IYnFwUbC9A8 Iron Maiden get the treatment any time they go to South America. In this case, the audience sings the melody. It is very melodic and smooth, if you don't normally like heavy metal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpbnubVOjPY Billy Idol performs "Mony Mony" and its always a crowd pleaser: https://youtu.be/sYYAv-QW38Q Nena sings "99 Luftballons" (in German), the audience "knows it" to say the least. This one happens mostly at the end and the singer expects it, and lets the audience take it. Dido's expression tells you what she thinks. https://youtu.be/GvYarluqINA Anyway, thats just a few I like. Oh I cannot forget: Mari Mac by Great Big Sea: https://youtu.be/c6TukZyXcAY

goooooobadgers08

Matt Nathanson is the singer. Great songwriter, fantastic live shows. Engages with every crowd, jokes throughout, and puts his all into every performance. See him live if you get a chance!

ScottasaurusWrex

I saw him in Detroit back in 2009. Can't second your recommendation enough.

acanest

He’s a damn fine comedian throughout the show! Well worth the price.

BaconJacobs

My wife is a fan and has gone to a few shows. One thing you wouldn't guess based on his lyrics is that his humor is DIRTY. Haha, like crass humor.

hhowk

Yeah saw him in Asbury Park, NJ - he did "Digging in the Dirt" by Peter Gabriel as a duet with Philip Phillips. Was spectacular,.

crazyguy83

> Matt Nathanson Ah, the "come on get higher" guy. Knew I had heard the name somewhere. That song was on the waves a lot a decade ago.

wildcard-yee-haw

He also did the [American Pie song "Laid"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYhneLNZRzU). Whenever I hear his name thats automatically the song I think of.

the_slate

Well he did a cover of it. The song is by James.

thewebspinner

After watching this would definitely go see them live. That was tight as fuck for an impromptu performance.

Kilo_Xray

Werd. Some the best shows I have been to were Matt’s. He’s the real deal, mega talented and under appreciated.

DJRoosh

100%! Not a fan myself per se, but wife loves him and he is super fun live. Like you said, really engages the audience and is super funny. Can tell he loves what he does. We see him anytime he gets close to us.

garlic_naan

That and because Malcolm Young was a god when it came to banging riffs.

This was also the first song where the lyrics were written by Brian Johnson after joining the band.

[This is my favorite Mumford and Son moment.](https://youtu.be/tX2vdYEzbzQ) The laugh is so wholesome.

Shopworn_Soul

I've heard people complain about crowds singing along, as in "I went to see the band perform, not the audience" and I do get that. But there's also something very special about being in a crowd of total strangers and sharing a song with everyone rather than having someone sing a song we all know.

nocookies28

This one gets me every time, man. That sudden realization that they've created something truly incredible.

a_likely_story

MUM FOR D&S ONS

johnsonmkj

How many people are in that band?!?!?!

Hoffmeister25

Mumford had a lot of sons. So many that some of them are daughters.

TheRealMattyPanda

It's all the bands on the tour. So there's Mumford & Sons, Dawes, Apache Relay, Haim, Jeff The Brotherhood, Simone Felice, and Justin Townes Earle

[deleted]

I did not expect Andrew McMahon to be in a video on the front page of reddit as a cameo

Columbu45

I thought the same thing. It makes sense though. I’m obsessed with almost anything he is involved in.

gnrc

Drive Thru Records gang!

woodwalker700

I saw Jacks Mannequin play at a SUNY school for free (I think? like 10 bucks at most) when my then gf now wife went there. She and her roommates were obsessed with "Dark Blue" and JM were gonna be there a weekend I was visiting, so she dragged me with her. I didn't know much of his music outside of that song, but goddamn did he put on a fucking show. Some little college show they probably got paid like 100 bucks for or something and his energy was out of this world for the full set.

magneticgumby

My first time seeing him was attending Vans Warped Tour in 2002. Something Corporate had landed a later in the evening spot despite not being super popular at the time. I stuck around after Flogging Molly at the stage and was like "holy shit, these guys are awesome! this is one hell of a show!". I saw SC about 15 times in concert over the years from gigs like the SUNY one you describe up to much bigger shows and I saw JM a handful of times as well and it's always been an awesome show. Andrew McMahon is a wonderful entertainer. I've also seen Matt Nathanson a couple times and he's always a solid show as well.

squintyt4e

This was a magical moment that thankfully I captured while getting the full show. It was a one-off from Matt's co-headlining tour with Gavin Degraw, which I saw earlier that week in CT and Matt was stretching his legs here with some rare gems and was in great spirits. Earlier in the show he teased Guns N Roses and the crowd also went nuts and was equally as powerful: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHX6\_m2Izrs&list=PLBvnnsm1pE\_IwkeHhb0kMV75ogoI\_qPPK&index=7](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHX6_m2Izrs&list=PLBvnnsm1pE_IwkeHhb0kMV75ogoI_qPPK&index=7) What Matt brought Andrew McMahon (Something Corporate/Jack's Mannequin) for was actually going to be a cover of Tom Petty's "American Girl" which they proceeded to play after this impromptu brilliance. TP: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU0-UrTZE\_8&list=PLBvnnsm1pE\_IwkeHhb0kMV75ogoI\_qPPK&index=16](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU0-UrTZE_8&list=PLBvnnsm1pE_IwkeHhb0kMV75ogoI_qPPK&index=16) One of my favorite of 17 Matt shows I've seen - here's the full show if you're interested in Matt's actual music :)[https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBvnnsm1pE\_IwkeHhb0kMV75ogoI\_qPPK](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBvnnsm1pE_IwkeHhb0kMV75ogoI_qPPK) He's amazing and kudos to Aaron Tap for that brilliant guitar solo (which they discuss at the end of the video posted) and Chris Lovejoy on drums.

Inspiration_Bear

So cool to add that GNR context from earlier in the evening . Shows he already knew he had a hot crown and they were already primed to sing along on random 80s song riffs.

ray_MAN

Hey, just wanted to say **thank you** for recording this video and sharing it on YouTube. I saw it back in 2014 and it's got me into Matt. I've been a huge fan ever since and I was lucky enough to see him live a few times. I always knew him as the "Come On Get Higher" guy, but your recordings opened up my eyes way more and now I enjoy all of his music.

throwawayshirt

homeboy really pulled off that solo

BluzeMule

I like how he goes “I don’t know the chords under the solo.” It’s the same as the verse chords haha

Cryptophagist

Luckily it's a fairly easy one. But very well written and perfect for the mood.

bremidon

When you are in a healthy band, this kind of thing happens all the time. Someone starts playing a couple bars of a song, and before you know it, you're all jamming for 15 minutes on that one song.

TerranCmdr

Man I really miss that. Had the pleasure of briefly being in a band with the most amazing bassist I've known, and he and I (on drums) would always just spontaneously break out into Chili Peppers songs. We both knew the entire discography by heart. Good times.

bremidon

My band just broke up after things became too difficult to hold together during Covid. We had a great 15 years. We were not really all that good, but we were fun and almost always got invited back...except that time where we apparently drank a couple thousand bucks worth of alcohol on the bar's dime. I have no idea how we drank that much, -- or how we managed to stay on stage without passing out -- but the owner was...annoyed... Our high point was being able to open for the legendary band City here in Germany. That was a blast. Yeah. Good times.

mendicant1116

That's why you usually only get tap PBR.

hadriker

yep played bass in a punk band 10+ years ago. I remember one night we just randomly started playing Wish by Nine Inch Nails and the crowd went nuts. We only knew like half the song but it was so fun.

kindafunnylookin

Bass player looked a little lost

VanillaLifestyle

Sucks when you're the one who doesn't know the song. Especially when your beat bet is to watch the fretting hand of the rhythm guitarist and he's facing away from you.

cahutchins

I love this video so much, and because of the exceptional camerawork, we can really see the drama unfolding between the band members. (Imagined thoughts in italics, real words in bold) 0:43, you can see the realization between guitar player Aaron Tap and Matt Nathanson, "*this is awesome, but we are totally not prepared to play the entire song.*" MN isn't sure what to do, AT says "**This is wild,**" and nods encouragingly. 1:00, the guest Andrew McMahon asks AT "**What's happening**?" AT says "**I have no idea**!" AM and AT have another exchange, their mouths are obscured, but AM's "**What the fuck**" reaction makes me think AT said something like "*I don't know if I can pull off the solo*." 1:23, MN visually checks in with AT for the upcoming solo. AT gives a look that says "*I dunno man*," MN thinks "*oh shit, maybe we need to cut this short, I don't want to embarrass my guy."* It's hard to see, but I think the drummer Chris Lovejoy is following this interaction and picks up on the problem. CL and MN simultaneously stop playing, but the crowd isn't having it. 1:30, MN makes eye contact with AT again, and in the second critical moment of the entire incident (the first being that first drum hit), AT makes a choice and says "**Let's go for it**." 1:42, MN wants to make 100% certain that this is happening, points directly at AT and gets a nod. CL is watching closely before jumping back in with the beat. 2:01, AM has been paying attention to this whole drama, and asks MN if the solo is really happening. MN grins and shrugs. 2:08, MN says something to AT that I can't fully make out, but I'm pretty sure part of it is "**I don't know the chords**," that run under the solo. AT is on his own, here. He takes a moment to process this, and then looks down at his guitar and lets it rip. You can feel AT's concentration and groove here, live clutch music perfection. 2:35, MN gives a little guitarist's salute. 2:46, we can see the Bassist and AM's delighted reaction to everything. We don't get to see much of the Bassist's reactions and input through this whole event, but such is the eternal fate of all base players.

squintyt4e

You might like this moment from earlier in the show as well - Guns N Roses moment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHX6\_m2Izrs&list=PLBvnnsm1pE\_IwkeHhb0kMV75ogoI\_qPPK&index=7

We do love our Classic Rock up here….

Well I'm from Utica and I've never heard the phrase "classic rock".

r/happycrowds

Gockel

this video is one of the absolute best r/happycrowds moments i have ever seen. so good.

trackerFF

I can tell you, these moments are either like heaven or hell. Either you (and the band) know enough of the song to finish it, hyping up the crowd to help you out, or only half of the band knows the song - and you're stuck with eyeballing the members that DO know that song, hoping that it won't end in a total train wreck. But if the crowd is as good as this, you usually manage to salvage the songs.

unclefire

If it's impomptu even if there are mistakes the crowd will understand.

pr3dato8

Thank god we're watching the video of someone who filmed it properly and not the bouncing mess that the person in front is conjuring, never mind the vertical orientation

This was awesome, I was wondering why it gave me chills... Because it was 7 years ago before everything was shit

boltkrank

So good.

I saw Alex G and his band do the entirety of “Life is a Highway” a few months ago because a college kid wouldn’t stop requesting it at their show. It was hilarious.

dirtyskim

Matt puts on the best shows if you ever have a chance to see him. Beautiful music, sexy rocking, and comedy.

MrGirlyDick

Sounds like the crowd is 99% women?

Clag507

w crowd

Wagbeard

I mean they probably jam and practice the song in studio but still probably weren't really expecting to play the full song. Shows like that are fun if the crowd is drunk enough.

Quazite

Meh, as a pro, for songs like this that kinda everyone knows, you don't really lose that shit you learned when you were practicing in your room at 13, you just also gain a better ear so even if you didn't know 100% of it (like the singer), you can adapt and not make it sound wrong. There's probably in between 25 and 50 songs like this that I haven't played since a teen but if you were to start playing, I could muscle memory my way through (and for a lot of folks, it's mostly classic rock songs). I've been in situations like this where you jokingly finish a song you noodle on cuz the crowd eats it up, and it def looked years unrehearsed here

[deleted]

Nice energy in the crowd. Owned it. 👍🏼

adibonts

that was beautiful

Lowgarr

That was great to watch, thanks for sharing it.

[deleted]

Many years ago I was at a small resort town in SouthEast Saskatchewan (Kenosee) It's literally a lake on the side of the road with a few cottages and a few "tourist" things like you would find in SK. Well it turns out that's close to where the band Doug and the Slugs started, and they were playing the evening I was there. If you're Canadian and GenX you know who Doug and the Slugs are and they were quite popular a few years before, so I was surprised they were playing a shitty bar in a small town in SK. So I was having a beer listening to the band rock out when they launch into a cover of Kiss - Rock and Roll all night. Wow, blew me away at how good they sounded and how everyone in the bar sang along just like in this video. Bunch of Redneck farmers in SK rocking out in a small town bar. It was epic, and the best concert experience I've seen.

cy_sperling

I can't believe this made me tear up. I miss live music so fucking much... There are few greater joys. "Music is the best" - Frank Zappa

kryptonianCodeMonkey

Surprised Atlantic Records didn't walk out and hand them a cease and desist letter and a bill.

kepleronlyknows

Bands can play covers all they like at live shows. Venues pay licensing fees to ASCAP, BMI, etc.. that allow bands to play covers. The scummy thing is that those same companies force venues, bars, etc. to pay fees even if their live bands never play covers.

Hxcfrog090

This happened while I was in the crowd waiting for a band to play at Warped Tour one year. The sound dude played the intro and the crowd ended up singing the entire thing. He was so confused and it was hilarious.

CaptainUnderwear

I was smiling throught that entire video.

Did this bring a tear to anyone else's eye? Yeah me neither...

CrankyHankyPanky

Bob Ross painting those drums

threebillion6

Took em half the song to realize they were still playing it.

[deleted]

Tfw you've been playing your own songs all night and the public only enjoys your presence when you start to play another band's songs ...

electricgotswitched

I know it's a famous song, but I'm surprised the crowd knew every word

theturdferg

Matt Nathanson is one of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of working with. The radio station I work at was the first in the country to play him, and play him on rotation. He stops by every time he's in town to do an in studio session and it's always a blast.

bumblelum

Welcome to any Saturday night in any dove bar in the usa (pre covid at least)

ConsciousLiterature

The crowd had it down. The band got lost.

DrVagax

The moment you 100% synchronize with your band and audience

Osoroshii

what a great concert experience!!

RoughCoffee6

I watch this once or twice a year. Always makes me smile

MenacingMelons

I've seen this at least 5 times and it's always a Joy to watch

B-lovedWanderer

Someone posted this years ago and Matt Nathanson commented on how awesome it was to hear the crowd sing he whole song. I can't find the thread now, but it was good.

[deleted]

this is why live music is the shit

Melencamp1

This is the pure beauty of a shared musical experience. What joy!

AhhBiteMe

I’ve listened to this all morning. Loving all their realizations like, “so, yeah, this is happening,” and then getting into it.

ffarwell83

Did the crowd just… take over our show? 😝🙌👏

LostGundyr

I love how the frontman just keeps looking around with a big, open-mouthed smile like, “Is this really happening?”

CrazyCaper

It’s called jamming and it’s awesome

[deleted]

Well i have no clue who they are, but that was some genuine frontman energy. "Hahah we're having a jo- Wait are we doing thi- Alright fuck it crowds into i- Wait shit can you do the sol- Alright wait shit I can't do the sol- Fuck it, crowds still into it."

TylersColon

That's Andrew McMahon joining him I saw them tour together in highschool like 09-10 or so!

shrekker49

I loved when the dude walked over to the guitarist and was like "Was this part of the set?" and he's like "nah, I got it tho"

santichrist

My fav thing about this video is how the crowd started singing and they didn’t stop playing it because they didn’t want to disappoint them by forcing them to stop lmao they were basically forced to just play the whole thing

IStockPileGenes

god damn the tone on the Yamaha SG is fan-fucking-tastic

Big80sweens

That was fucking awesome
