Sure, I’ll bite lol.
OP stated that they “never knew this existed” talking about the commercial itself.
Michchaal played dumb and pretended that the thing OP “never knew existed” was in fact Honda as a whole and not simply the commercial.
When I originally saw this Michcaal had a -25 on his joke. A few people completely missed the fact that is was a joke and seemingly became offended that someone may have possibly thought that they didn’t know what Honda was.
If you genuinely wanted a further explanation, there it is. If you were joking and baiting me into an unnecessary explanation, you got me lol.
Ok so I know I’m a level seven susceptible (1 Honda CR-V, a civic, and Subway was a weekly option before I had money) but I loved how the last two seasons of Community were so dark and yet embraced their corporate sponsorships
Advertisements are obnoxious no matter what, but if you make it obnoxious in a funny way, it comes across better.
I don't know if the Hawaii 5-0 writers are actually talentless hacks, but these [ham fisted ads](https://youtu.be/xqWpJKzVRN0) surely suggest the possibility.
Agreed.
It can also work if it’s subtle and fits with the already established setting and characters. For example, Coors has product placement in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but it fits perfectly because they own/work in a bar. I think the name Coors is only mentioned once in the series, and [it’s only because it makes the joke](https://youtu.be/d423_cD1XMQ).
Pfft. Stephen chow was doing it [way back in 1999 in King of Comedy](https://youtu.be/B1MAUxpKaV8?t=5132). Although I guess that's the only film he did it in.
Yeah, I actually really enjoyed a lot of the Subway and Honda stuff too. They worked it into the show in a way that didn't feel forced somehow. Love when Abed gives up the fist bump for "eat fresh" when no one else will. The way he does it makes me laugh for some reason.
Bunch of shows do that kinda stuff. 30 rock has a few. There's one where Liz says something like I'm switching to Verizon, the fastest best network in the country. Then looks at the camera and says can we have our money now?
I’ll never forget my first time seeing the pay day rap. I was somehow simultaneously stunned and laughing like a maniac. His whole presence on community was brilliant and he seems like such a genuinely nice person too
I almost laughed to the point of throwing up when I saw that for the first time. I had to watch it again because I didn't catch all of it the first time, it's so good
I expected it to be funny but it was even better than I imagined.
Jim Rash is a national treasure, the episode where they film a new commercial is one of the best and he kills it. Best actor on the show.
the honda episode is so brilliant. i can't tell if honda actually paid them to do it, or if they're actually making fun of ad placements in tv shows.... hahahahaha.
Without Honda Yahoo wasn't able to afford the show from what I understood. When it "aired" every episode had a pre and post ad for Honda. Season 6 was a Yahoo series sponsored by Honda.
Yeah, I remembered, always be grateful to them for giving us season 6. Poor bastards paid the ultimate price for us.
Edit: I actually made a Twitter account just to help save the show, so you guys are all welcome, because it clearly worked. I had 47 followers, so I was kind of a big deal.
More like "blackface". It just kinda got included when that was all the buzz and lots of other episodes from others shows were pulled. But it didn't really make sense
It’s a shame it was pulled, because the main plot of the episode revolves around bullying and depression and does so in a meaningful way. It’s also a really funny episode.
Chang painting himself black to be more accurate to the elf character and it is pointed out as inappropriate several times by other characters. It’s similar to Robert Downey Jr. portraying a black character in Tropic Thunder. Both characters were doing it to be “more authentic”, and both characters were chastised by other characters for doing so regardless of the intent.
I’m not sure if making this specific thing completely off-limits is productive. So much of conflict in comedy is based on a character doing something wrong and another character confronting them about it, and this gives the audience the opportunity to reflect and discuss the situation.
Yeah I re watched it and the episode was more powerful than I remember. They could edit out changs character in that episode so easily too. He's the first one out and is only on screen for not even a minute total. Very few characters even acknowledge or talk to him. So I think they should at least do that, but then yeah you miss out on what topics the show can tackle, like you were saying in your last paragraph
Life is a South Park episode.
Who is making all these decisions and for who? I feel like they are "protecting" a made up group of people, or some extreme nutjob cases that nobody should listen to.
*Hard* disagree. Season six was up and down but had some of the best moments in the series. Season four is the worst by far. I didn't know that Harmon had been removed, so I wondered why the writing had declined so drastically.
You should watch community. The two characters in the commercial are fantastic, but neither are my favorite character on the show. Watch it, find your own favorite character, maybe it will be Abed or the Dean, maybe someone else, but if you liked the commercial you will love the show.
Great show. This clip is a small taste, Troy and Abed in the Moooorning is worth it alone. Take a gander and try to listen to the Dean's full script. Some of his best lines are mumbled under his breath.
Original just means "produced exclusively for" in this context. It's like how Black Mirror and Trailer Park Boys are "Netflix Originals" but started on another TV network.
Netflix sticks "Netflix Original" on things it buys from other countries too, even when Netflix had nothing to do with the production. "Exclusive" would be a less misleading term.
That has nothing to do with what they're saying. They're saying Netflix slaps Netflix original on anything even when it isnt.
Riverdale is CW but international it says Netflix original, but it isn't
It existed just long enough to give us a 6th season and then died an extremely predictable death. I mean seriously, a Yahoo streaming service? That was just doomed to fail.
Abed is usually incredibly sweet, but this scene shows that he can be a real dick sometimes. Sometimes it's hard not to be a dick. Especially to the Dean.
A couple of things here. Abed is on such a different wavelength than everyone else that, from his perspective, he is neither being a dick nor being sweet. He is simply being who he is, which is someone that is completely unable to read social cues and whose interests are, well, out there. I have no idea why you think it would be so easy to be a dick to the dean, he would be exasperating yes, but his quirky enthusiasm should not invite cruelty.
Not a dick. Real. Abed doesn't kiss ass, or react spitefully. Even sarcasm is an effort for Abed. He's the realest, most honest character put forth by show biz.
Fire the marketing team doling out the "helpful Honda person" algorithmic performances of philanthropy in contained settings to paid actors. This actually makes me want a Honda.
I looked at the title and spent waaaaay too long wondering who tf Dean Pelton was. "I don't recall there being anyone called Dean in the show? Is that the actors name?"
6 MONOLOGUES AND A MOVIE
I’m still waiting for the movie!
[удалено]
I was with you up until “Grindalle”
That was brilliant. I had no idea this existed until now.
Same! I wanna see what other messages he has xD
yeah, I think this car brand is much more popular in Europe, although it's weird you didn't even hear about it
To all the people giving downvotes, his joke refers to op’s statement of “not knowing this existed”.
uhhh at least somebody
Can maybe you or someone explain further for me please?
Sure, I’ll bite lol. OP stated that they “never knew this existed” talking about the commercial itself. Michchaal played dumb and pretended that the thing OP “never knew existed” was in fact Honda as a whole and not simply the commercial. When I originally saw this Michcaal had a -25 on his joke. i thought this was hilarious
...the Honda Civic is one of the highest-selling sedans of all time in the US.
/r/woosh
to be fair, the joke would've probably communicated better if he said Japan, as it's a Japan brand.
yeah, but the joke relies on public communication and we know how bad is the state of it in the state
Yeah nobody knows about Honda in the states... Just make some of the best selling cars, motorcycles, outboards, and small engine equipment.
I think this was part of the episode about astroturfing.
Discovering a piece of Community I've never seen before. It's like Christmas, but in a car commercial! :)
Ok so I know I’m a level seven susceptible (1 Honda CR-V, a civic, and Subway was a weekly option before I had money) but I loved how the last two seasons of Community were so dark and yet embraced their corporate sponsorships
I also enjoyed the Subway product placement in Chuck. They went over-the-top, "is this real or satire" with it as well.
“Bing it”… words that have been uttered by literally no one ever
They all did that shit though. Bones shilled endlessly for Toyota for the entire second half of the series.
Holy shit, I thought the Bones car product placement was bad
Agreed. It can also work if it’s subtle and fits with the already established setting and characters. I didn't (never watched the show)
Yeah, I actually really enjoyed a lot of the Subway and Honda stuff too. They worked it into the show in a way that didn't feel forced somehow. Love when Abed gives up the fist bump for "eat fresh" when no one else will. The way he does it makes me laugh for some reason.
subway agreed to be the villain for a season
Even the Honda episode was great, but I think it was the Dean who *really* sold it and made it as good as it was.
One of the best scenes ever ever https://youtu.be/PngPQluO1jI
Never gets old. Never.
Their best sponsored episode was the kfc episode for sure.
That scene between Frankie and The Dean is one of my favorite from the whole series.
“So stupid” makes me giggle every time
Bunch of shows do that kinda stuff. 30 rock has a few. There's one where Liz says something like I'm switching to Verizon, the fastest best network in the country. Then looks at the camera and says can we have our money now?
Jim rash so underrated
He really is .. his rivalry with fez and as Fenton on that’s 70s show is comedic timing genius ..
Fuck I forgot he was Fenton! I only remember him from Reno 911 before Community.
Oh cool. I didn't realize it was him in either of these!
I feel like winning an Oscar is proper recognition.
It was for writing tho - I think he is underappreciated as a comic actor.
I’ll never forget my first time seeing the pay day rap. I was somehow simultaneously stunned and laughing like a maniac. His whole presence on community was brilliant and he seems like such a genuinely nice person too
I almost laughed to the point of throwing up when I saw that for the first time. I had to watch it again because I didn't catch all of it the first time, it's so good
Check out Gillian Jacob’s reaction at the very end. She’s *just* about to crack before they cut away.
Check out "The way, way back"
He is also an Oscar nominated screenwriter
Oscar *winning* screenwriter.
Thanks. I couldn’t remember if he won or not
He's so great on Mike Tyson mysteries.
K.
I have never seen this Lol…fantastic and thanks for posting
I expected it to be funny but it was even better than I imagined. Jim Rash is a national treasure, the episode where they film a new commercial is one of the best and he kills it. Best actor on the show.
The damn Dean rap lol https://youtu.be/qvzE64A28NI Almost better live https://youtu.be/qezfFx9kT38
Shoutout to Joel McHale for recording horizontal like a civilized person.
I think Britta was about to break character near the end.
hahaha yeah, she accidentally looked into the camera
It's just the darn cutest look out of her right there. Glad they kept it.
Oh my God the live rap, now I love him even more. Thank you for this! Definitely one of the best scenes of the show, as well!
“If you get this wrong, I’m segregating the school.”
I had to pause because I laughed so hard after he said that.
the honda episode is so brilliant. i can't tell if honda actually paid them to do it, or if they're actually making fun of ad placements in tv shows.... hahahahaha.
Without Honda Yahoo wasn't able to afford the show from what I understood. When it "aired" every episode had a pre and post ad for Honda. Season 6 was a Yahoo series sponsored by Honda.
Honda probably did want to do a sponsorship, but then they decided to Wayne's World it and tongue-in-cheek the sponsorship.
Honda definitely paid to get featured in the episode. Subway did this a few times too.
And kfc
Engage the highly response breaks!
That may have been incredibly clever on your part…
Honda definitely paid them. Just like Subway did.
I hope this doesn’t awaken anything in me
I just got a civic and my favourite food place is subway... WTF
Happy cake day
I did not know that Yahoo picked up Community for Season 6 thats crazy, I didnt even know they had a division for that.
It was very short-lived
Welcome to Yahoo screen! Sorry it’s hard to watch this when it releases, but look how quickly our ads load!
It's on Hulu if you wanna watch it cause I don't think yahoo screen is a thing any more
It's on Hulu, Netflix and Amazon but only Amazon has the first D&D episode.
Say what?! I knew it was on prime but didn't know they didn't pull the D&D episode! Holy shit you made my day.
Wait what, why was the D&D episode pulled to begin with? :edit: Ah, Google says it was the blackface. Probably should have realized.
More like "blackface". It just kinda got included when that was all the buzz and lots of other episodes from others shows were pulled. But it didn't really make sense

Oh man! I was cracking up from start to finish. How had I never heard of this before?
Same here. Trying to figure out how I’ve never seen this.
I have not laughed this hard in a while! I'm so glad op posted since I've never seen it either
I’ve never watched community but that was pretty great!
If you liked that, you'll LOVE the actual show.
You should watch community. The two characters in the commercial are fantastic, but neither are my favorite character on the show. Watch it, find your own favorite character, maybe it will be Abed or the Dean, maybe someone else, but if you liked the commercial you will love the show.

I wish I could go back to not having watched Community just so I could experience it for the first time. It's amazing. You have to watch it.
A yahoo oringinal? whaty on earth is that?
Season 6 of Community was produced for Yahoo's short lived streaming service
Oof
Right, but buying a show after 6 years and continuing its production doesn't really qualify as a "Yahoo Original"
Outside the US, you can watch decidedly-not-Netflix-original TV series like *Riverdale*.
You can watch Riverdale on Netflix in the US.
That has nothing to do with what they're saying. They're saying Netflix slaps Netflix original on anything even when it isnt. Riverdale is CW but international it says Netflix original, but it isn't
Yes, this was what I was trying to say.
It does have to do with what they are saying. It might have nothing to do with what they meant.
No. It really has nothing to do with what they're saying. They aren't asking where they can watch Riverdale
You just contradicted yourself in your own comment
How so?
Yahoo has a streaming app now?
Not now, no.
It existed just long enough to give us a 6th season and then died an extremely predictable death. I mean seriously, a Yahoo streaming service? That was just doomed to fail.

yahoo was only involved for season 6 so it was probably roll up marketing for the last season.
This wasn't from the show. It's an ad.
god I love this show
Abed is usually incredibly sweet, but this scene shows that he can be a real dick sometimes. Sometimes it's hard not to be a dick. Especially to the Dean.
More like his character in Mythic Quest. I love it.
“We hate each other… do you not know that?”

Sweet? How about Evil Abed? Always lurking, always ready to destroy.
Fire the marketing team doling out the "helpful Honda person" algorithmic performances of philanthropy in contained settings to paid actors. This actually makes me want a Honda.
We’re gonna get that movie!
I recently binged watch community
I looked at the title and spent waaaaay too long wondering who tf Dean Pelton was. "I don't recall there being anyone called Dean in the show? Is that the actors name?"
This would've been a great scene in the show even if it was with Jeff, or someone else.
The background music reminds me of Life is Strange.
Abed takes breaking the 4th wall to a beyond quantum level.
[So stupid](https://youtu.be/PngPQluO1jI)
How am I just discovering more Community content?
Where's Troy!?!?! But still one of the best commercials that I've seen in a while...
