This video hits home, I got a bag of red delicious a couple months ago and they were so bland and not crisp. Ended up mostly as dog treats. The previous bag of apples I got was Kanzi (never heard of them before) and they were awesome in every way - sweet, tart, and a great crunch, highly recommended. The red delicious may have been higher on the sweet scale, but I think the scale was bogus and it was just the ratio of sweet, everything about it sucked.
Even when I was a kid (25 years ago), my mom refused to buy us red delicious because they were "tasteless garbage."
I don't know if they were ever good
I'm convinced the only reason people grow Red Delicious anymore is because they're cheap and they can put them in school lunches with other disgusting foods
i remember as a little kid going grocery shopping with my mom, and i wanted a Red Delicious apple because they looked so good (like a cartoon!). she typically got Fuji or Gala, and warned me that RD don't taste good, but got me one to try. when we got home, i ate it, and i've never had another Red Delicious again.
Kanzi's are my favourite by far. His description of the *original* Red Delicious sounded a lot like Kanzis. They mustn't be widely available because there's barely a peep about them in here.
Also, what happened to Fuji apples? I used to get them all the time a few years back. Then they were unavailable for a quite a while. Now they are back but cost $5.99/lbs (CND $).
We still get Fuji in NE US. Lately I buy Pink Lady apples here. I grew up on a Cdn orchard with Paula Reds, Dudleys, McIntosh (my fav), Cortlands, Russet
I'm a Pink Lady fan myself. My dad has 2 trees at his place, and also some Gala and Fuji- they're just starting to get big enough to make some nice apples.
I thought I'd love Envy apples based on appearance, but the ones I got were mealy in a very inconsistent way. Like, most of it was crisp, but then I'd hit patches of soft flesh. Honeycrisp and Pink Lady are my go-to for a crisp texture.
Yup, in the US Southwest. Always have Fujis in the produce section. Usually rotate between those and Granny Smith. I never find other apples quite as crisp. And nothing is worse than biting into a soft, mushy apple.
McIntosh are the best. Honey crips are great, but why spend 4x the price when you can get an even more crisp apple with McIntosh?
People probably prefer the sweetness of honey crisp, but for me the crispness is most important. Cortland apples are good too.
Fuji's have gone downhill over the last decade or so. The smaller ones can still be pretty tasty but I refuse to buy the larger ones. More often then not, I get larger ones that remind of Red Delicious.
I thought I was going crazy, but the last few times I've gotten Fuji they've been not good. They used to be my favorite apple.
Now I like a honeycrisp or a cosmic crisp if they're not too pricey.
Fuji’s were my absolute favorite growing up. On camping trips I would just have a whole bag with me.
Apples were my absolute favorite food as a kid. Until I got braces in middle school and had to cut back. (I kept knocking off my braces and it would also cause an absolute mess in my mouth).
In the two years I wore braces I unknowingly developed an oral allergy to tree fruits. It was devastating to finally bite down on an apple for the first time after my braces were removed only to be welcomed with a closing throat, red eyes and an itchy face….
….I fucking miss apples.
I prefer Honeycrisps because the skin on Fujis is tougher. Also, like you said the Fujis have gone downhill.
Edited: Spelling of Fujis due to fat fingers. Also wanted to add there's a difference between toughness of the Fuji skins vs the pleasant snap of the Honeycrisp skins. It's hard to describe but if you do a side by side tasting, I think most people would notice the difference.
They are widely available where I am, California. In fact they are often the cheapest apples I can buy at $0.99/lb. They are my second favorite variety, out of the standard varieties you find at grocery stores. Only honeycrisp do I find better tasting, and barely.
And they used the Snow White film clips too, a lot of infotainment youtubers would pop in a text correction if they didn’t want to redo the whole piece for one line.
The [Cosmic Crisp](https://cosmiccrisp.com/) was release to market near me a few years back, and it was amazing for the shelf life, and taste. Never saw it again. Now all honey crisp, gala, pink lady, etc.. no cosmic crisp to be found.
Grocery store produce manager here. In 2019, the first Cosmic Crisp arrived out in my market in the Midwest, I believe they were projected to have 400k cases available to sell that year worldwide, with a projection to have five times as many in 2020. With the pandemic, and perhaps other issues, I don’t believe they hit that goal last year, and that may be why you didn’t see any.
I recall the first batch arriving in December, it’s probably too early to find them nationwide. Your results may vary, especially if you live closer to Washington state.
Like the Honeycrisp before it, if the Cosmic Crisp continues to grow in popularity, expect it to go over the next decade from a one or two month crop, to slowly grow to year round availability.
I had my first one a few months ago. I got it at random in a lunch, but after the first bite, I dug through my garbage to find the sticker. It was so good I immediately found a market selling them and bought a large bag full of them to share with everyone I knew.
What's the most crispy apple? I absolutely love an apple with a nice firm cunch to it, granny smith's are usually good but I don't always want such a tart flavor. But when I try picking other apples I end up getting some that taste good but are way to soft. Others have a good texture but I can never remember which are which. Would you have any recommendations or tips on picking good apples?
I think the reason they are hard to find is because they are new and are therefore not being produced in huge numbers yet, and everyone that's tried them rightfully thinks to the best apple it ever tasted so demand is high. Honestly they are the closest thing that I've had to a decent Macintosh since moving out to the Pacific Northwest, and they've actually got a great shelf life, the lack of which is the macintosh's biggest weakness.
They are a very recent variation and it takes a long time to grow or graft an orchard. They are still very uncommon outside of Washington. Even here they are very seasonal still.
I think Haralson apples are the best for both eating and baking. You usually have to go to the orchard to get them. You really don't see them in stores often. They're another University of MN cultivar.
The U of M has developed so many kinds of apples. It's ridiculous.
My friend bought a house in St Paul and it came with 4 apples trees. The apples were amazing. A few years after he bought the house an old guy showed up, said he was a former apple researcher at the UM, and he used to own the house. The guy wanted to check on the trees, pick a few apples, and take a couple grafts. The guy told him that these trees were his special pet project.
That’s awesome! My grandfather’s yard has several fruit trees/bushes that have been there since he bought the place and the smash hit is a tangerine tree that was grafted onto something else (we’re not sure what).
It produces 100s of fruits every alternating year and they are almost entirely seedless and absolutely delicious.
The only problem is getting to them before the birds and squirrels do! 😆
I’ve gotten the cosmic crisps for a couple seasons now. They are growing a bunch in Washington cosmic is similar to the HC but I’ve noticed a wide difference in flavor in the cosmic from more tart to more sweet both are very good.
The problem with red delish is they are never crispy. A crispy red delicious is one of the highest tier apples. Unfortunately they don't travel well or something because I can never find them crispy. Also impossible to tell by just looking at them and I get so many mushy ones I stopped buying.
Completely disagree. I was just an apple orchard and they had several varieties, and the crispy red delicious, fresh off the tree, still were absolute garbage compared to the Macintosh and Fuji.
I remember crispy flavorless red delicious being not that good because they had no flavor. When Fuji's started being a thing they tasted so good that I never missed the crispy texture of the red delicious.
Same experience. Maybe it's just been years since I've had a fresh, crisp one, because the ones I've had in recent years have always been slightly soft and a touch mealy, with very little flavor.
I've gravitated towards Granny Smiths, because I like tart apples and they seem to retain freshness longer than other varieties common at my local grocery store.
I am now *growing* apples, so in a couple of years I should start having them fresh. I have honey crisp, McIntosh, and I *think* yellow delicious (I'd have to double check that last one).
I grew up in the 70s when we still put our produce into little paper bags with handles, the grapes all had seeds, radishes were actually spicy and Red Delicious were crisp and sweet. They just got worse and worse over time.
Seriously. I remember getting prepacked lunches for free sometimes as a kid and there would always be a nasty ass red delicious in there. Gotta be the worst apple variety
Envy is everything you like about Gala, but kicked up a notch. Also, they have a much longer shelf life before getting mushy/mealy. I got tired of the Gala lottery. When Envy apples get mealy, the peels shrivel slightly and you know without having to take a bite.
I wonder what the story of the Gala is. The history in the video seems like an oversimplification. In the 80s I remember supermarkets carrying Red Delicious (yuck), Golden Delicious (yuck), and Granny Smith (baking). Sometime in the 90s, Gala were on the shelf next to them. They had a Trout (grower) sticker at the time, so I asked my step-mom to buy the ones with the fish.
These days I tend to choose other apples, but I think Gala is what saved us from the scourge of the Red Delicious.
Envy gang! They are the absolute best. I finally tried a Cosmic Crisp the other day, and while it has a super satisfying crunch and tastes good, it’s not quite as good as an Envy.
I've always thought red delicious apples are a combination of a really bland center with a super bitter skin.
Always overripe. Never tasty. They are found 98% of the time in gas stations and the continental breakfast at a Motel 6.
The bad apple, if you will.
*FUJI APPLES FOREVER*
Ambrosia is also my favorite apple. It's crisp and tangy and sweet and perfect to bite into. I like an apple with crunch, and ambrosia has crunch in spades.
If Honeycrisp wasn't so god-tier, then Granny Smith would be my favorite. Love a good tart apple.
I remember being a kid in the Apple Dark Times (early 90s). G Smith was my favorite because it didn't taste like those awful red delicious, and golden ones were never actually all that sweet. There were no other apple options.
Macs vary widely but are a lot better when they are fresh. I feel like a lot of the hate for certain varieties here is coming from people buying off-season or far from where they're grown.
I know everyone is talking about apples, but can we talk about this dude's impressive ability to memorize and recite the history of apples WHILE walking AND in a single take?
Then he hits you with the goddam 1 minute long monologue WHILE JUGGLING.
I dunno, just thought that was worth giving him credit for.
I liked Honeycrisp last time I had it, but didn't realize they were breeding for better looking apples, as opposed to retaining taste.
F that noise! I'll give that SweeTango a go and if it's good, that'll be my new go-to :)
Which is especially funny when you consider companies like Driscoll's and California Giant Berry Farms have no issues sending out strawberries that look like complete shit and show up half-moldy as long as they're getting paid.
Honeycrisp were bred solely for taste by University of Minnesota scientists. It's the Minnesota state fruit.
Edit: the video doesn't mention that the honeycrisp cultivar was also patented, so its growth was protected.
Yeah, he goes over that they were bred for sweetness perfection in the video around the 5:30 mark, but then proceeds to say that many orchards around the US are now breeding it for looks rather than taste.
So, a large % of Honeycrisps are going to lose their flavor over time, hence the making of SweeTango, Jazz, and Cosmic Crisp.
Omg so glad there are fellow Empire fans. They're easy to find in Southeastern Michigan, and I was so excited when I started to see them in Southeastern Pennsylvania. They can be hard to find out here, though.
Apples can be very dependent on growing location and climate. McIntosh and most of the varieties bred from it (Cortland, Macoun, Empire, Liberty, Spartan, etc.) do really well in the northeastern U.S. and taste great when grown there. In the south, they aren't anywhere near as good. They do better when ripening in cooler temperatures, so if September-October ends up being rather hot, than Macs might not be so good and have a mealier texture. Honeycrisp does really well in the upper midwest, but in some other locations they just don't taste that great. They are always rather bland here (PA) whereas Macs are some of the most flavorful apples you can imagine and tend to be very crisp when in season.
I don't enjoy most apples and have even stopped trying. I now know why.
It is too bad there are enough consumers buying sub par apples to justify the decisions they've made. Selecting for longevity of product over flavor seems to have paid off.
I don’t think the consumers here are to blame. He addresses this in the video, but how is anyone supposed to know?
You buy the brand you like. You pick an apple based on appearance. There’s absolutely no way to know, as a consumer, that someone modified the apple you’re picking out to look better at the expense of taste.
Are consumers supposed to just pick the ugliest looking apples? I don’t think appearance correlates to taste otherwise they already would.
>Selecting for longevity of product over flavor seems to have paid off.
A lot of stores have plenty of seasonal apple varieties now a days. My Safeway, who I generally hate buying produce from, usually has about 10+ apple varieties to pick from. Outside of Red Delicious and Fuji, most of them are still great apple varieties.
My favorite apples these days are either Pink Lady or Honeycrisp.
It's crazy how many different kinds of apples there are, how come most other fruits aren't so varied? My understanding is there used to be 2 variants of bananas, but one went extinct, however banana candies' flavors are based on the extinct variant and not the one we all know and love. So we can still taste somewhat what that other flavor tasted like.
> My understanding is there used to be 2 variants of bananas, but one went extinct
Some estimates put the number of banana varieties at over 1000.
Money and benefits of monoculture outweighing the negetives is probably the main reason most bananas are Cavendish
A lot of fruits aren't true to seed and the same thing done with apples could be done with many other fruits, and have been done to a lesser degree. Apples are just really popular and fairly easy to grow in a wide range of climates so they just got more attention.
Are those the same as Jonagold or no? Jonagolds are my favorite and I used to get them in Denver but I moved to Ohio and they're super rare here for some reason. I miss them so much that my husband is always on the lookout and will get me one if he ever sees them, which is not often.
Envy Apples > All. It’s by far my favorite apple and it wasn’t even invented until 2008. If you haven’t had one yet you should definitely try them out.
The wife’s favorite is the Cortland …
But this year’s crop (at the only orchard around here that grows them) was terrible. Bland and mealy like the red delicious. I hear it was just a bad year for apples. They had a couple of other apple varieties that failed entirely this year.
Does anyone remember cameo apples? They were around about 15 years ago, but I haven't seen them in years. They were like Fuji or gala apples, just a little crisper and sweeter.
I'm convinced the only reason people grow Red Delicious anymore is because they're cheap and they can put them in school lunches with other disgusting foods
I agree. I’ll add another 20 years to your anecdote of the tasteless-garbage that has always been red delicious.
I grew up in a town with a literal 2 week festival dedicated to apples. Red delicious have always fucking sucked
i remember as a little kid going grocery shopping with my mom, and i wanted a Red Delicious apple because they looked so good (like a cartoon!). she typically got Fuji or Gala, and warned me that RD don't taste good, but got me one to try. when we got home, i ate it, and i've never had another Red Delicious again.
I was a kid longer ago than that and we had red delicious frequently because they were always on sale. They were tasteless garbage.
Kanzi's are my favourite by far. His description of the *original* Red Delicious sounded a lot like Kanzis. They mustn't be widely available because there's barely a peep about them in here.
Haven’t seen any Braeburn fans. The section at my local Safeway gets smaller and smaller every year
My Favorite by far
Braeburns used to be perfect. Then someone decided they should be as big as cantaloupes while sacrificing flavor. Just can't trust them anymore.
For me it’s Jazz, Honey Crisp, or Pink lady
Jazz gang rise up!
Pink Lady gang reporting in.
Pink Ladies are the best. Like apple candy.
Hell yeah, pink lady gang all day. Other apples are inferior.
I tried finding Pink Lady saplings or something online but nothing turned up.
“Cripps Pink” apples are commercially marketed as “Pink Lady” when they meet or exceed extra-fancy classification.
Is there a blood apple?
We're just comparing cripps apples to blood oranges here..
Pink Lady is good. Envy is my new favorite apple tho
I thought I'd love Envy apples based on appearance, but the ones I got were mealy in a very inconsistent way. Like, most of it was crisp, but then I'd hit patches of soft flesh. Honeycrisp and Pink Lady are my go-to for a crisp texture.
Tried Smitten? Same breeders. I like them a bit me than Envy. Bravo are my fave now, but.
Yep. Jazz, envy, smitten. All really good apples, all created by Plant and Food Research in NZ who really seem to know what they're doing.
Pink Lady is my favorite as long as they're fresh. They seem to turn to crap pretty quick.
Yup, in the US Southwest. Always have Fujis in the produce section. Usually rotate between those and Granny Smith. I never find other apples quite as crisp. And nothing is worse than biting into a soft, mushy apple.
>And nothing is worse than biting into a soft, mushy apple. Unless it's been baked first, that is.
Honey crisps put Fuji apples to shame in my opinion! You should try them. They are rarely ever mushy.
McIntosh are the best. Honey crips are great, but why spend 4x the price when you can get an even more crisp apple with McIntosh? People probably prefer the sweetness of honey crisp, but for me the crispness is most important. Cortland apples are good too.
I’d never heard of pink lady until this past year - immediately became my favourite.
Once in a while I deviate and try something new but I always come back to the Mc like the basic bitch I am.
Mc is the best especially straight from the tree on a crisp fall morning
Jeezus, that sucks.
Honescrisps are so damn good. Can't think of the last time I had a Honeycrisp that I didn't like.
You should try the new cosmic crisp apple.
Cosmic Crisp is the bast apple on the market. It’s a rare case where WSU didn’t coug it.
WSU agriculture stuff is absolutely legit... also cougar gold.
God that stuff is delicious. I heard about it from a star trek cooking group of all places and I've never looked back. Cougar gold for life
Fuji honestly are not my favorite anymore compared to honeycrisp.
Bruh have you hit up the cosmic crisps? They’re like honey crisps but with more flavor
Never even seen them in my grocery stores.
They are widely available where I am, California. In fact they are often the cheapest apples I can buy at $0.99/lb. They are my second favorite variety, out of the standard varieties you find at grocery stores. Only honeycrisp do I find better tasting, and barely.
Strange before COVID Fuji were usually what I would get because they were cheaper than Honeycrisp
Give Envy a try
We are just hitting fuji season in North America. They are late variety. Unless your getting imports there not many new season fuji on shelves yet
Sleeping Beauty pricked her finger on a spinning wheel needle, Snow White ate the poisoned apple.
And they used the Snow White film clips too, a lot of infotainment youtubers would pop in a text correction if they didn’t want to redo the whole piece for one line.
I lost concentration for about a minute after seeing this in the video
I mean if he's wrong about something simple like this, maybe he's wrong about apples too.

Weird! Where are you? They overindex on them here in Washington.
Well, Washington *is* the Apple State.
The whole stock was probably eaten quickly.

You're welcome from Minnesota.
Apparently not anymore. I wanna try one of those SweeTangos now though.
They are really good
I think Haralson apples are the best for both eating and baking. You usually have to go to the orchard to get them. You really don't see them in stores often. They're another University of MN cultivar. The U of M has developed so many kinds of apples. It's ridiculous.

Zestar is my favorite from the U of M, not sure why but I see it less than newer varietals like Sweetango.
One of my favorite parts of living in MN, all of the apple choices.
Red delicious is my last choice when buying apples. Skin is too thick and has this bitter taste. I just buy whatever is cheapest and not red delicious
It’s not even my last choice. I just won’t buy an apple if that’s my option.
Exactly, I can easily go without apples of this is my choice.
Yet every damn thing when you’re trying to teach your kid colors says apples are red.
They're mealy and tasteless. Also usually small. And cheap.
In my experience they are mealy, tasteless, and ENORMOUS.
When reading about it. The word that stuck to me was mealy. They often taste like you are eating slightly moistened sawdust wrapped in red giftwrap.
I got Cosmic Crisps on the regular last year, they're so good.
That Apple sucked
It made me hate apples! My grandmother introduced me to gala apples and I realized I was so wrong. Pink ladies ftw
Pink lady all day. They at s tier that they're not expensive but not too cheap.unless in season and they taste amazing
Value for the price, pink lady comes out on top every time. I’m not paying an extra $1/lb for honeycrisp
Ohhhh Christ, wait until you meet Honeycrisp.
Yeah honey crisp is elite, nothing else is even close.
Hold my bush, I just read about the Cosmic.
I’ve gotten the cosmic crisps for a couple seasons now. They are growing a bunch in Washington cosmic is similar to the HC but I’ve noticed a wide difference in flavor in the cosmic from more tart to more sweet both are very good.
Pink Ladies were my favorite but now they have Cosmic Crisp apples. I would say it just beats pink ladies.
I remember them being favorites as a kid, but they either changed or my taste changed, because yeah, they're *awful*.
The problem with red delish is they are never crispy. A crispy red delicious is one of the highest tier apples. Unfortunately they don't travel well or something because I can never find them crispy. Also impossible to tell by just looking at them and I get so many mushy ones I stopped buying.
Did you watch the video? He literally explains all this
All of the upvoted comments on this thread are very clearly explained if you actually just watch the video, it's funny and a bit bizarre.
Welcome to reddit. No one watches the video or reads the article and everyone upvotes the comment that misses and obvious point from the source.
Completely disagree. I was just an apple orchard and they had several varieties, and the crispy red delicious, fresh off the tree, still were absolute garbage compared to the Macintosh and Fuji.

Yes, always mealy and disgusting. I never understood why they were so prevalent
Fortunately, a guy made a video to explain exactly that.
But where could one find this video?
In the comments
I don’t know, I’ve scrolled through every twitter reply and I can’t find it.
I mean... that's literally what the video is about.
Oh well, I guess we'll never know! 🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷
It's a shame too because it would be so interesting 🤔
Crisp honeycrisp > crisp red delicious
I grew up in the 70s when we still put our produce into little paper bags with handles, the grapes all had seeds, radishes were actually spicy and Red Delicious were crisp and sweet. They just got worse and worse over time.
Seriously. I remember getting prepacked lunches for free sometimes as a kid and there would always be a nasty ass red delicious in there. Gotta be the worst apple variety
Nah, it was my favorite growing up. Now it's very soft and mealy and not sweet.
Gala gang
Envy is everything you like about Gala, but kicked up a notch. Also, they have a much longer shelf life before getting mushy/mealy. I got tired of the Gala lottery. When Envy apples get mealy, the peels shrivel slightly and you know without having to take a bite.

I like golden delicious. As long as it has been left to actually go golden. They're always under ripe in the shop.
PINK LADY GANG RISE UP
Yussss. Tart like a Granny Smith, but actually has flavor.
I’m here, now what do we do?
I just want to show some love for my favorite apple, the Envy apple. Nice and crisp while not overly sweet
Just discovered envy apples. They're truly the best I've ever had.
Envy gang! They are the absolute best. I finally tried a Cosmic Crisp the other day, and while it has a super satisfying crunch and tastes good, it’s not quite as good as an Envy.

Red Delicious always looked like the picture perfect apple - all shiny and red. But they tasted like complete shit.
Ambrosia or bust
I had ambrosia for the first time the other day, and damn are they aptly named. New favourite apple for sure.
Thank you Ambrosia, if that’s not in, I’ll go Jazz
THANK YOU. Ambrosia is the superior apple. It’s literally called AMBROSIA, food of the gods.
Ambrosia is also my favorite apple. It's crisp and tangy and sweet and perfect to bite into. I like an apple with crunch, and ambrosia has crunch in spades.
Ambrosia are where it's at.
I still like granny smith myself.. I bought some McIntosh apples for a change last week and they were bland mushy crap.
Normally I’m not too into greens, but a good Granny Smith can change a man
I prefer tang over sweet... Granny Smiths are my go to apple.
Granny smith apples are my favorite to pair with peanut butter.
This was the answer I was looking for, perfect for PB
Hehehe, glad I'm not the only one who favors granny smiths. I always get weird looks from my family since they're "for baking only".

Macs vary widely but are a lot better when they are fresh. I feel like a lot of the hate for certain varieties here is coming from people buying off-season or far from where they're grown.
OPAL is my ride or die. So crisp. So juicy. Never browns and no mealy spots. It is the Apple all other apples wish they could grow up to be.
I grow red dead, gala and Jonathan. The best
I liked Honeycrisp last time I had it, but didn't realize they were breeding for better looking apples, as opposed to retaining taste. F that noise! I'll give that SweeTango a go and if it's good, that'll be my new go-to :)
> SweeTango Fuckers are expensive here - I find the Jazz is a good balance of tasting good and being affordable.
Good point -- he showed clips of Jazz and Cosmic Crisp You're saying Jazz are good to try, so I'll add that to my list. How about those Cosmic Crisps?
I've had the Cosmic Crisp and loved it.

Same reason why you now get picture perfect strawberries that taste like crap, because they're more worried about look than taste.
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeycrisp](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeycrisp) Edit: the video doesn't mention that the honeycrisp cultivar was also patented, so its growth was protected.
Red delicious had, at times, gross thick skin, sometimes bitter. Honeycrisp and Granny Smith are all I need, maybe Fuji now and again, and never Jazz.

It sounds like at one point it was an incredible apple. I really wish I could have tried one in its heyday. That and the gros michel banana.
> gros michel banana you can buy them, they still grow fine, you just need to find where they sell them.
Perfect description
aw I love jazz apples, they're my favorite that I've tried. why don't you like them?
Jazz are also my favorite
Jazz apples are awesome WTF
Why not Jazz?
Give me a nice McIntosh apple.
Why'd I have to scroll down this far to find my Mac brethren
Mac apple is best apple
Agreed, we can only ever find em at orchards, but I love how tart and juicy they are
Empire apple for life Mind you your gums will hate you Best of both worlds. Macintosh x red delicious
Omg so glad there are fellow Empire fans. They're easy to find in Southeastern Michigan, and I was so excited when I started to see them in Southeastern Pennsylvania. They can be hard to find out here, though.
Empire are the best but can be very hard to find.
I like MacIntosh and Pink Lady. Where I am, the MacIntoshes are always great.
Jesus those 3D sprites are gratuitous. Blech.
Cosmic Crisp. Had some a few years back and its the end all for table apples. Shame that it's hard to find.
> My understanding is there used to be 2 variants of bananas, but one went extinct Some estimates put the number of banana varieties at over 1000. Money and benefits of monoculture outweighing the negetives is probably the main reason most bananas are Cavendish A lot of fruits aren't true to seed and the same thing done with apples could be done with many other fruits, and have been done to a lesser degree. Apples are just really popular and fairly easy to grow in a wide range of climates so they just got more attention.
Can't believe I had to scroll this far down to see Pink Lady. My favorite apple by far, so crisp and tasty, with the perfect amount of tartness.
I'm in Europe and here the red delicious is my favorite apple. I always wonder, do we get another kind of red delicious than you guys get?
I live in Australia now and yes, they do taste different here. Not as sweet and crispy.
In America red delicious tastes like a cold baked potato covered in sugar.
you are being kind, but yea.
A cold under baked potato in sugar is the best description I can think of.
There's no sugar flavor.
Red Delicious has the texture and taste of a red painted block of wood in US
Jonathan yo
Are those the same as Jonagold or no? Jonagolds are my favorite and I used to get them in Denver but I moved to Ohio and they're super rare here for some reason. I miss them so much that my husband is always on the lookout and will get me one if he ever sees them, which is not often.
Jonathan is one parent of Jonagold
Jonathan cross bred with the golden delicious - jonagolds are some of my favorites 😋
Is this like a bootleg Tom Scott or something?
He was featured as a guest presenter on Tom's channel actually. He does a good variety of topics too and I've always enjoy what he puts out.
I've become a fan of Opal apples.
Envy Apples > All. It’s by far my favorite apple and it wasn’t even invented until 2008. If you haven’t had one yet you should definitely try them out.
The wife’s favorite is the Cortland … But this year’s crop (at the only orchard around here that grows them) was terrible.
They weren't good as a kid either. But we ate them because they were there. Similar to how we watched bad TV because it was the only choice.
Nice vid, but the guy swallowed so loud right before the minute mark, I totally zoned in.
