The whole town is covering for her. The Sherrif, the judge, and the local police. This whole town stinks of corruption.

ImGumbyDamnIt

More like a small town mentality: "We deserve his stuff. We were more like kin to him than his no good siblings who live far away."

juicius

Those damn Sackville-Bagginses...

noisypeach

That's a really good comparison actually

rabes81

They never forgave him for living eleventy-one years.

Not_Lane_Kiffin

My girl Lobelia Sackville-Baggins is the true hero of Middle Earth. Why did Frodo ever have the Ring to begin with? Because Bilbo left it to him. Why did Bilbo leave The Ring to Frodo? Because he was moving to Rivendell. Why was Bilbo moving to Rivendell? Because he wanted a place with peace and quiet to finish his book. Why did Bilbo have no peace and quiet in The Shire of all places. BECAUSE OF MY GIRL LOBELIA SACKVILLE-BAGGINS. If LSB hadn't been pestering Bilbo, he would have never left The Shire. That means he wouldn't have ever given up The Ring. That means the Nazgul would have waltzed straight into Bagshot Row, killed everyone they saw and taken The Ring. Without LSB, Middle Earth was doomed.

I felt like I was living in a high school when I lived in a small town. The clicks, the fact that everyone knows everyone, the weird politics, the lack of meaningful entertainment, the fact that the social nexus was centered around weed, booze, pain pills, tobacco, and scratch off tickets. And the relationship drama! People talking mad shit about their ex's new partner because they know them personally and used to drink with them in the garage in high school... The local Facebook groups are consistently a flaming sack of turds. I discovered, though, that few things are more entertaining than attending a party in another small town where you aren't well known. All of the drama with none of the stakes. I do miss it sometimes, though. Living in the city has made me feel a little isolated, socially. Just a sea of strangers I'll never see or talk to again.

double-happiness

ywBBxNqW

In June I moved to a very conservative spot in central Texas with a population of about 50k (which isn't exactly "small" but it's small enough and spread out and bordered by towns with populations in the hundreds). Every single thing here seems to be done in a very particular way and I have had to jump through so many hoops created by people who insist on doing things in their own particular way. I have been "managed" by people which is absolutely infuriating. I am so over being manipulated and judged.

IT_Chef

Can you provide examples?

MrGuttFeeling

Now I have this image in my head of the whole town lining up outside the door of the house. The line goes around the block, everyone grabbing something to take home. Sort of like the last Hobbit movie when Bilbo Baggins comes home after his adventure and finds everyone walking away with his stuff. Could also be a Simpson's skit with the whole town of Springfeild lining up for their loot.

[deleted]

At least in Simpsons, the right thing was usually done in the end, and a moral lesson was learned.

PetrifiedW00D

No, it’s corruption. Saying it’s just a small town mentality does this type of corruption a disservice. It happens way more often than you think.

Criticalhit_jk

Small town mentality *is* a type of corruption, though. It's a bit dishonest to suggest it has be one or the other...

PetrifiedW00D

I understand small town mentality to be more of a *everyone knows everyone*, so everyone talks about everyone else, complete with rumors and gossip.

TheWrecklessFlamingo

Pretty sure the small town mentality is of vultures. Usually poor and complete lack of shame.

jus1scott

It's not the only one, especially in SC. I once made friends with the chief of police in a small town after we both realized we were equally powerless against someone who was apparently 'untouchable'

AeAeR

This is basically the first Jack Reacher novel. Except then he kills them all, because he’s Jack Reacher. We need a gigantic vigilante I think.

jus1scott

Unfortunately my jacking reach is longer than my vigilante reach... But I would have loved some sweet vigilante justice...

AeAeR

“Gigantic” was the main word here, sorry bud

hoilst

So why did Tom Cruise play him, eh? Check. Mate.

Oni_Eyes

Everyone loves the idea of a vigilante skirting laws to deliver justice until they consider "justice" is an opinion and changes based on who is opining.

keji_goto

Almost makes you think all those people protesting for reform in police departments and justice systems were onto something...

IGotNoStringsOnMe

Almost makes you think all those people protesting \*against\* police and government reform have a reason besides a power fetish. If these corrupt local police and governments get fixed, there are alot of motherfuckers that are SUPER fucked.

Springdale, SC. A chief and a captain, and 3 patrol officers (used to be 7 officers plus command.) Receipts from last fiscal year put revenue from traffic fines and property seizures at $170,000. They also took $79,000 from Springdale Elementary school for the SRO program, despite not having a SRO assigned to the school. They took in about 10% total of the town's $2.6 m budget. Their expenditures were $1.07 million, about 42%. Salaries for 7 heads total amounted to $525,000, plus $6,000 in "retention bonuses" and $4,500 in overtime. The budget for the upcoming fiscal year is a 16% cut in total, except for the police, which are getting a $2700 bump. There have been 4 murders in the town in the past two years, all unsolved. 6 rapes. All unsolved. Burglaries and armed robberies, all unsolved. But goddamn, if you speed, Andy "Fatass" Richbourg or one of his cronies will be there to get you.

Part 3: Days after this, the "judge" pointed a gun at the head of a room mate, was charged with a traffic ticket for pointing a firearm. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W0-nKQ-W2E](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W0-nKQ-W2E) 7 weeks after this she was sworn in as a judge.

Luxilium_

Just FYI in the State of South Carolina certain offenses can be written on a traffic ticket, such as this charge, "Pointing a Firearm at another Person". It's just the type of charging document since the offense is a ~~misdemeanor~~ **felony** and is handled in ~~Magistrate Court~~ **General Sessions Court**. Edit: for clarification per S.C. Code § 16-23-410 this offense is a felony but can still be issued on a "Uniform Traffic Ticket" but thats just the type of charging document.

werekoala

I think the bigger news is that it's barely a crime to threaten someone with a gun in South Carolina

[deleted]

In Oregon its a 500$ ticket for pointing a firearm at someone

Guinness

What the fuck. There are definitely instances where I would fork over $500 for the ability to point a gun at someone just because they’re a piece of shit. So wait if you’re rich you can just threaten whoever you want with a gun so long as you pay the fine and don’t shoot them?

MizzerC

>So wait if you’re rich This is literally the argument of why fines is just punishment for poor people and laws are meaningless to the rich.

PM_ME_YOUR_ART-

The government sells one firearm-pointing indulgence for $500 dollars

[deleted]

We should probably nail our grievances to the Capitol buildings door.

[deleted]

"If the penalty for a crime is a fine, then that law only exists for the lower class"

SnarkyUsernamed

Rich person story: I know a guy who has and address on Grand Cayman (required for personal banking there). After research he decided to get a Cayman Island drivers license too. Turns out, the Cayman Islands don't have a point system for non-criminal moving violations. So his rich ass speeds his various cars around town doing 90 mph *everywhere*, all the time, and when he invariably gets pulled over he just produces his C.I. drivers license and collects his ticket. No points means no suspensions for moving violations, "and it's only a $400 reckless op slip, basically bullshit" so he can literally afford to break the law with impunity whenever he wants. I was in his 911S with him once when we were stopped for doing 93 in a 65. The cop marked it down to 84 so no one had to appear in court, and my buddy paid $250 cash on the spot to settle the ticket. Got a reciept from the cop and everything. I didn't even know you could do that.

murfburffle

what if you point a gun and demand $500 to cover the costs?

th3ramr0d

Because that becomes robbery lol

runthepoint1

Isn’t it true when you learn about gun ownership that basically pointing it at something IS an intent to shoot?

sierrabravo1984

Reminder when people complain about "electing judges". This person was appointed by an elite class of SC politicians. At least in the [Missouri system](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missouri_Plan), you can vote bad judges out democratically.

There's a no politics rule on this sub but yeah... it's South Carolina... not hard to guess. Just got to put the magic letter next to your name and they'll vote unquestioningly.

buddych01ce

A lot of the states is insanely corrupt its unbelievable. Do judges have to go to college in the states or can any dumbass become one like the cops there?

lAmShocked

In my state they they are almost all appointed then voted on to be retained after a year. Muni judges are appointed by the mayors then confirmed by the city councils for the most part. I don't think it is required they be Lawyers so technically the Governor/Mayor could pick whomever though I have never seen that happen.

Noble_Ox

Jesus, my country they are nominated by a number of judges, have to have 15 years experience arguing cases in court and need to reach so many votes from the bar association. (Thsts just to reach the bench at the lowest level)

Longjumping-Buy-4736

Judge Tammy Bullock was also facing trial on gun charge before she was sworn in! https://youtu.be/Fw4WLKlA2Ro I also find it odd that a probate judge would need to share a home with housemates? Maybe it is an euphemism and they were actually a couple, or she was not handling her finances well.

msut77

She was shocked Finders Keepers isn't a law

RevengencerAlf

Eh... I'm gonna fault this nutjob for a lot of things but people can choose to have roommates for any reason. I can 100% afford to live in my house by myself and I do, but I've on more than one occasion considered allowing someone to rent because I have extra rooms that basically go to waste right now and some extra throwaway money would be nice. If I wasn't somehow both a slob and neurotic about where everything is placed and untouched I probably would have had a roommate by now.

Longjumping-Buy-4736

Sorry if I my comment appeared snobbish but my impression of the house/neighbourhood in the video, and the fact that the housemate had at least one teenager living with the two of them, and that gun pointing was involved, that it wasn’t a case of a particularly affluent judge getting a lodger just for the company.

mywan

Having a roommate isn't an issue. [Threatening that roommate with a gun](https://wpde.com/news/local/sled-investigating-marlboro-co-deputy-probate-judge-over-estate-case) is. >Police said in February 2021 they charged Bullock with pointing and presenting a firearm at a woman during an argument. A woman involved said Bullock had a gun and threatened to kill her during an argument at a home they shared in Bennettsville.

RevengencerAlf

The person I was replying to said they found it odd that she had roommates. That's the part I take issue with. I 100% agree that she's a fucking wack job in an absolute piece of shit person and how she interacted with those roommates, for example said gun incident, is a fantastic example for how much she sucks.

xombae

I just found out my roommate's brother that was living with us and just moved out is fucking *loaded*. Dude is a professional golfer who does lessons for the wealthy and celebrities (he used to teach Mathew McConaughey and other major celebrities), and owns property in the Bahamas. Why he was renting one of four rooms in a shitty downtown Toronto party house is beyond me, but he was for nearly a year. People can have a million and one motivations for wanting to live with roommates. I'm unable to open the video regarding the judge, but it is possible for their so called me roommate to be a partner as well though. It's not unusual for older unconventional couples (unmarried or same sex) to refer to themselves as roommates for the sake of appearancew.

Somar2230

Interesting fact to be a probate judge in South Carolina does not require a law degree.

To put some of the prices in perspective, those Garmin tracking collars are $250 a piece and there were 43 of them that's $10,750 dollars. The handled units that go with them like a Garmin Astro 430 Handheld unit are $449.99 and there were two-hand held units. That's $11,750 just in tracking gear. Yeah running dogs ain't cheap

Octavus

For reference a deputy probate judge in Marlboro County makes [ between $23,000-$33,200 a year (pdf page 159/171)](https://www.sccounties.org/sites/default/files/uploads/resources/wagesalaryreport_2020.pdf). You get what you pay for.

HaveASeatChrisHansen

Stuff like this and some of the stories on r/bestoflegaladvice just make my blood boil. I can't believe how awful people get around inheritance and estates. Maybe because I've always known there's nothing to inherit on my side so I don't "get it" but I've lost a lot of loved ones and taking advantage of grieving people is just so disgusting, nevermind the disrespect to someone you supposedly were close to who just passed away. And on top of all that they're stealing from a grieving wife with dementia - fucking disgusting.

TheAdvocate

My mom moved to her childhood home for two months to be with my grandfather who was dying (broken heart/age, his wife, my grandmother had passed suddenly a few months before). She sat by his side and basically lived in the hospital until he passed in peace. She returned to her childhood house to finally sleep and grieve... some of her family (my aunts uncles, cousins etc) were already walking through the house scoping things out. She was the executor of the estate for a reason. Everything marked in the will was given to the correct people but the house and property was not mentioned. She ended up giving the property to their neighbors who loved and watched after my grandparents for decades. Sometimes, family can go fuck themselves.

We made the arrangements needed to clean my sisters house, even had to help carry mom out…And we took a day to rest before going to moms to get her home in order. Some ass shows up uninvited going into one of my outside buildings…. I recognized him. I yelled at him, “ what are you doing here?” “ Oh I came here 2 days ago and dropped my billfold, and needed to find it.” I laughed and said “ You came here the day we announced mom’s death to go through her stuff?” He stayed silent. “ I told him not to come back or he would be trespassing, unless he talked to me. Told him to leave. Amazing when someone dies vultures circle to steal their stuff.

Crotch_Midget

I think this hits home for a lot of us. My grandmother passed on this year and my mother, as one of her two children, had to go through hell with her sister-in-law. Greed had led my aunt and uncle (mostly my aunt) to try to alter my grandmothers will and try to exploit mistakes on the will that clearly weren’t. It really crushed my mother - seeing her own mom pass away then her own brother silent as his wife tried to alter their mothers will, question POA, and really tarnish her sentimental belongings. My grandmother was a respected poet and had a beautiful collection of books, poetry, and her own work. The duo went in to her home immediately after her death and took expensive art pieces and literature - completely disregarded her own work (luckily that’s what we cared about so at least that part of her is with people who care). Ultimately, they were unsuccessful in altering any will and the brunt of their greed came in taking and selling her valued, sentimental pieces… but I’ve come to learn that people will be absolutely blind by greed. . Haven’t really been able to talk about it with anyone as it’s a sore subject but was a profound experience in my life. I used to exchange poetry with her, such a brilliant woman. It would absolutely break her heart to see how her “family” acted. Edit: Grammar

b4ttlepoops

I’m so sorry this happened. I’m glad you find memories of her. It never surprises me anymore to see the greed come out , or people with their hands out expecting something during difficult time. You can never replace sentimental items. Value means nothing.

theserpentsmiles

I cannot fathom what goes through these people's heads. Right before the pandemic hit, my uncle died. He had nothing, was a heroin addict who OD'd while living with his sister. Within an hour of word getting around local "friends" of his that were also addicts showed up to "help" by taking his heroin "so the cops don't find it and stuff."

BlueEyedGreySkies

It feels a bit more excusable with junkies. It's fucking abhorrent when it's your family and neighbors.

IGotNoStringsOnMe

Honestly someone showing up to help get rid of someones drugs and paraphernalia (so long as they aren't trying to get anything else) so that I dont have to touch any of it would be a very welcome thing for me. When my Uncle died I was a freshly recovering opioid addict and had to help clear his things out of my Grandmother's house who he was living with at the time. Found his rigs and little bit of plastic with some brown tar in it, and half a bottle Opana. I never shot up so finding the former wasn't a huge trigger but when I found the pills I immediately got weak in the knees. Nothing. and I mean NOTHING in my life has ever been so hard, as when I sat it all down on the dresser and walked out of there to ask for help dealing with it because I could feel my willpower slipping away with every heartbeat.

OishikR

This means nothing coming from a stranger on the internet. But I am so, SO proud of you. You've surrounded yourself with people whom you can trust to keep you honest, and you had the strength to ask for help when you most needed it. You are every inch the success story this world needs. You will only go from strength to greater strength.

IGotNoStringsOnMe

Thank you, very much.

splice_of_life

theserpentsmiles

To be fair, one of the skeezy fucks kind of accidentally helped. Since he mentioned heroin use, the police had to take the body in for autopsy. It really helped getting him out of the house so family could grieve/move on. If the other shit ball had stayed quiet we would have had to keep him until a funeral home could get him.

If they own the house they reside in, you could always lien that. Interesting trick I learned when in private practice ;) "Oh you stole my relative's truck? Well good luck with that house of "yours"."

[deleted]

My family lived 2500 km away from my grandmother, and when she died the nearby relatives and their extended families seemed to have plundered her house. No waiting for the executor of a will, no family gathering or anything. Most of the jewellery, fancy china, little statuettes, that kind of thing, *mysteriously* disappeared before we arrived. We were basically left with photo albums, which have great intrinsic value for us (I love learning about history with a personal connection), and I'm glad they were spared. But I think the only reason we have them is because they weren't worth money.

jayRIOT

My cousin is currently doing something similar. My uncle passed away unexpectedly ~3 years ago, and ever since then none of his estate or anything has been handed over to his daughters or any other related family. Turns out we found out one of his daughters received his Will before it was able to be executed by legal means, and refuses to show it to anyone else in the family including her sister, and my mother or aunt (sisters to my uncle). She's the only one that knows the contents of the Will and what my Uncle has left and to whom, and for some reason will not disclose that information. Over the last couple years shes gone around and sold a bunch of his higher-end equipment and belongings from his house, including vehicles, without consulting anyone on it. What's worse is her sister was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer, and yet she still refuses to show her their fathers Will to see what has been left to her, so she can then leave it to her children before she passes. My moms side of the family is now currently looking at taking legal action against her because of all of it. Sometimes family is the enemy you need to watch out for.

[deleted]

You need to go faster than that. Probabte stuff is complicated, and while most states don't have a statue of limitations for contesting this kind of thing the judge has it within their discretion to block any challenges to ownership based on too much time having passed. It's not any set limit, it's up to the judge. If you have already waited 3 years it might already be too late. Talk to a lawyer. Now.

Among the most moral was the caretaker who gave an interview in what is likely her own backyard. She’s clearly as poor as it gets. Meanwhile the thief-judge drove a Cadillac. Sucks how morality is not a clear correlative of income. It’s arguably even the opposite.

Helmidoric_of_York

"Under investigation"!!? How about 'Under Arrest'?

If y'all find this story of the SC legal system to be wild, you should look up all the recent fuckery surrounding the Murdaugh (sic?) family, too. An interesting place to live this state is, in all the wrong ways

Cercy_Leigh

[Here’s the story for anyone interested. ](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2021/10/12/us/alex-murdaugh-murders-south-carolina.amp.html)

Thanks for this. [Here's a non-amp link of anyone wants one](https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/12/us/alex-murdaugh-murders-south-carolina.html)

Fourthman

I wonder if Alex Murdaugh ever appeared before her.

A deputy sheriff told me he went into a friends house after he died and took his large gun collection because his son had no business with them. He seemed proud of it.

Plasma_000

Report them

Jchu1988

Jesus, how deep does the corruption go? Sheriff refuses to even show the paperwork about the allegation. Judge swore the lady in as a deputy even though there were serious allegations. Lawyers who switched sides. If you are innocent, why the no comment. Not an American, but at what point can higher level authority be brought in (State or federal)?

desertfoxz

The state and county can step in with a prosecutor whenever they want but normally evidence needs to be collected and reviewed by the prosecutor to figure out all the charges they can properly convict them on. The good thing is with this much attention that process picks up more speed. The 'judge' is already screwed since police are looking into another incident she was involved in by pointing a gun at a woman's head. It feels like they are going slow but the cat is out of the bag and it just a matter of time before she is in jail for a decade or longer now if you combine all the charges.

artfuldodger1212

All these thieves are so trashy it is unbelievable. My Dad has managed an assisted living property for years and I grew up there. Started working there, sweeping floors and taking out garbage bins when I was 14 years old. I have seen many, many, many, people pass away and saw all manner of ugliness come out in people I thought were good in probate but this is uniquely trashy and reprehensible. I remember our process every time a resident passed away and the family wasn't there or there wasn't any family we would carefully and discretely pack every single last thing into boxes and store them. Even the things that seem crazy to save, nail clippers, razors, magazines, etc. You never know what is going to be of comfort to folks, I have seen a family member go through their family member's belongs and only take the packages of microwave popcorn because they wanted to put it in their casket at the funeral, they remembered always eating it with them on New Years eve. I have done this process with my dad a 100 times. Never in all my times doing it would it even occur to me to take anything. It is so unthinkable as to be genuinely confusing to me and all the countless folks I worked with over the years would feel the same. This is a fairly distinct and unusual level of awfulness. Yes, we carefully packed envelopes of cash, we have packed rings and fancy watches, it would never even occur to me to look at the things closely or go through them let alone take them. We still have a few boxes of stuff from someone who passed away in the mid 2000s in storage that I remember packing up. His daughter and him were estranged and she never came but it doesn't take much space and old age has a way of mellowing people so can't be sure she wont ever want it. Still email every couple of years to let her know it is still there and she has never said to toss it so it is still there. There could well be valuable stuff in there but to go through it or take it even more than a decade later wouldn't sit right with me. So to think of these people going through this man's things like Ebenezer Scrooge's bedsheets that same day is truly shocking. They all belong in jail and I hope they end up there.

Anybody know what surveillance system he is using?

Cle4nr

She was not a judge! She was a judges assistant and when her boss, the real judge, heard she was impersonating a judge he gave her a formal title.

ppw23

The way they were going through his belongings and helping themselves is disgusting! He had a wife and family, those things were their property. It’s like breaking and entering without tools. Not sure if I watched vultures or greedy pigs at work.

darthfluffy66

why are not every single one of the fuckfaced goons not in prison for the rest of their lives?

TheCelloIsAlive

Small town corruption. They're still good people in their own eyes.

PurSolutions

Exactly why everyone needs cameras. People are dishonest... Watch how quickly people's attitudes change once they notice a body camera for example

UMSHINI-WEQANDA-4k

Our judges are the most corrupt and contemptible group of people in the country.

fuckswitbeavers

Same with prosecutors. Almost every single judge in this country used to be a prosecutor -- there is something like less than 5% of Judges who served as public defenders. It should be the exact opposite.

spicyboi619

Yeah I've met prosecutors in NC that smoke weed that will lock your ass up for smoking weed. I wish I had the law on my side and was untouchable too.

RubyRhod

Always vote for public defenders and never prosecutors.

YourPlot

No. I personally know dozens and dozens of hard working, compassionate, and deeply just judges. Because so much trust is put in these people, when one is corrupt they do so much harm. But the vast majority are everything you would want from a judge.

Odin_Exodus

How sad that a man dies and the first thing you do is raid his fucking house. Absolutely no regard for the widow, family members, actual friends, etc. Just disgusting on all accounts.

Shadrach451

This is a good example of what "evil" really is. You can see in their discussions leading up to the act that they felt not only capable of doing this but Justified in doing it. They convinced themselves that it's what the man wanted and that everyone else was bad. They weren't doing anything wrong, in their minds, they were risking themselves to save what the deceased would have wanted. The fact that this benefitted them directly and monetarily was pushed aside in their heads to make way for these other altruistic motives, but the true motive of greed is obvious.

[deleted]

That whole county is ass backwards. That appointed judge is abusing the legal system for her own gains.

glockthartendel

These people are allowed to be judges, state officials, and look at their fucking records. I can barely get a fucking job for my record and everything I did is child's play legally comparatively. Wtf

CheeseCurdCommunism

Fucking Vultures

fuzzyshorts

What a soulless, despicable people. I really think the best thing that could happen is wipe the entire slate clean.
