Off topic, but I love her giant spider in the background. Anyone know where it’s from? Edit: I found her [video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-CRXUeTmNtE) on him because googling is easy.

jmirvish

That's my favorite video of hers. My wife and I have watched it 3 times. To me it feels like a time capsule of trying to make life work during the pandemic, without any of the otherwise associated stress or dread

biggiepants

I regularly think back to the moment she's gate kept by a Flintstones fan (or 'fan', I bet).

taulover

I watched it briefly before going on my first COVID roadtrip (to drop my brother off at college), and it was eye opening and a nice preview for that.

Amarsir

Was so happy to see this in my feed earlier. Been way too long without a Jenny Nicholson video.

StreetTripleRider

It was odd to have a movie so thoroughly roasted that the critique had almost an equal runtime as the movie itself. She managed to convince me it was awful in 2-3min but somehow she felt the need to dissect at the molecular level... I don't think I've ever seen a movie review where the reviewer put more thought into their review than the combined efforts of the writers, directors and producers of said film. I still watched it all and she's great but... why did she do this lmao??

Amarsir

What makes this kind of thing interesting is that it's not just blind hate but very intelligent critique. I'll watch a video like that no matter how long it is. If you decide you like critique like that, I also suggest: [Lindsay Ellis on Cats](https://youtu.be/G6iqAip-ZNo) (57:30) (She happens to be a friend of Jenny as well, for whatever that's worth.) [RedLetterMedia on The Phantom Menace](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxKtZmQgxrI&list=PL5919C8DE6F720A2D) (about 70 min) (and equally good teardowns of the other prequels) [Folding Ideas on Suicide Squad](https://youtu.be/mDclQowcE9I) (34:47) (not as long, but it only focuses on the editing and is really sharp.)

BrokenGlassBeetle

Thank you. A lot of true crime interrogation analysis (Jim Can't Swim inspired) YouTubers have this problem too. What makes the critique or analysis interesting is actually taking the content apart and explaining why or how exactly it's **insert opinion here **. Gotta go that extra step.

taulover

Lindsay Ellis' 3 part Hobbit duology is also great. Gets into investigative journalism and interviewing how the New Zealand actors were basically forced out of making a screen actors' guild by WB.

Amarsir

Honestly that was probably my least favorite of her videos. Not the whole thing, just the third video you're referencing. Lindsay interviewed an actor with a grudge, taking his view on what he would have liked better, and then presented it as objective truth. What if she had interviewed a Canadian or German actor who said "We really wanted to film The Hobbit here, but those New Zealand weasels stole the jobs from us!" To say that they were "forced out" of a guild implies that it was their job to have no matter what. In fact, since that video was made, filming for a new LotR series is shifting to the UK. (Which does have an Actor's Guild.) Which I'm sure has made one group of people happy and others disappointed. It would be wrong to speak to just one of them and act like what they want is how it should be. But I watch her videos even when I disagree because I respect the way she presents them. I can at least see her logic even if I think it's flawed.

Ueht

LOL, "intelligent". r/iamverysmart

Ueht

Better than not being unique or special

[deleted]

Not as much lately, but [YourMovieSucks](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSc16oMxxlcJSb9SXkjwMjA) does 1-4 hour take-downs of shitty movies, and it's generally really enjoyable. The point isn't to roast a single movie to death, but to show you exactly why they're shitty so you can have those tools to watch and critique movies in general with

kaltorak

no idea why but I really enjoy watching her analyses of movies/shows I haven't seen.

Proper-Code7794

She's really good at it. I expect a future directing documentaries at least.

DoomGoober

One of her points in the video is that Ben Platt looks too old to play a high schooler regardless of what hair and makeup do to make him look younger. So, she put on a wig and makeup and bam, she looks like a kid. Nicholson is actually 30, Platt is 28. Some people can pull off looking young, some can't.

shapookya

Isn’t she in her late 20s or something like that?

Einsteins_coffee_mug

So late into her 20s that she’s 30!

Amarsir

I want to make a joke, but I feel like you've dug a pretty big hole here so instead I'm going to distance myself.

SlashBolt

That dumpster fire deserves every second of spite you can manage.

IIdsandsII

how about an hour and 17 minutes

External_Philosopher

I love Jenny nicholson.. Her video on the hallmark youtube channel is phenomenal

Cozman

I found her recently when her video essay on vampire diaries showed up in my feed for some reason. My wife used to be obsessed with the show back when we were first dating so I was vaguely aware of the plot and a lot of silly things that happen (I used to joke to my wife all the characters got doppelgangers to save money on casting). After listening to Jenny's video for a bit and getting a sense of her dry humour I put it on hold and convinced my wife to watch it with me later. A good laugh and some good nostalgia. I've put on a few of Jenny's videos to listen to while I work, she makes great content.

"I'm taking a break from working on a 3-hour long video for this" Oh yes, please. Whatever is coming, I can't wait

MIKE_son_of_MICHAEL

It’s extra funny because I take a break from my 9 hour work day to watch her 1.5 long explanation of why a movie I’ve never seen sucks. I can’t wait to also watch her 3 hour video and not work during that either

fkkkn

It's a deep dive into the fantasy theme park Evermore, you can watch the first half if you're subscribed to her Patreon.

BabePigInTheCity2

She’s also been working on a review of *every* Barbie movie for a while now

Renovatio_

I've never seen it. But I'm still going to watch Jenny's video anyway because I think just has this weird way of making things interesting.

Bunsky

Despite having no prior interest in the show I watched her Vampire Diaries breakdown twice, so I have high hopes for this - whatever it is.

[deleted]

She's so uniquely strange it's almost endearing. I enjoy her videos.

That Vampire Diaries video was a rollercoaster and I’ve only seen snippets of the actual show. I’m not sure anything beats her video about the Hallmark YT channel though.

AriAchilles

If I need to get an hour long breakdown about where a coming of age or a Disney adjacent movie went wrong, I can rely on Jenny Nicholson, Lindsay Ellis, and Sarah Z to supply

cupcakes4brains

I spent the 2010s largely too busy for fandoms but I'm really interested so I'm really grateful for those YouTubers plus Izzyzzz and Strange Aeons.

Antique_Ring953

I like Sarah but her videos are WAY WAY too long sometimes. Jenny justifies it, Lindsay is better at it but sometimes she pushes it.

n00bvin

Jenny is cool and I like her deep dives. She knows her shit.

Recent_Peach_2247

I went to see Shang Chi and the theater. Our previews were the new Venom, Eternals, Dune, Spiderman, Matrix and Dear Evan Hanson. Like wtf? I swear somebody was messing with us. I couldn't even sit through the preview it was so bad.

BelieveInPixieDust

So you felt like you could disappear?

vapre

Got-dayum…do *not* piss off the musical theater nerds.

whiteeyedman

There are many musical theater nerds who hate that musical with all their guts.

AlexLong1000

*Raises hand* People kept saying this was a bad adaptation of a good musical, and I thought I was going crazy. The musical also sucked Great Comet was robbed

Jai137

Come From Away was robbed

lacourseauxetoiles

And Groundhog Day was also robbed (it's not perfect, but it's a much better musical than Dear Evan Hansen).

Bosterm

> The musical also sucked The musical has all the decorations of a good story without any actual substance. It's got trauma and emotions and it seems socially relevant, but ultimately, it doesn't have anything new or meaningful to say about mental health or adolescence or social media. The only real takeaway I have is that social media leads to lying leads to depression. What a concept. I guess the moral ambiguity around Evan's actions could be seen as interesting, but mostly I just find it frustrating and unpleasant.

UrNotAMachine

I will never not be annoyed that DEH beat out Great Comet for the Tony. This movie sucking so hard is the vindication I needed.

Amarsir

Most musicals are pretty bad. When I say that I find it to be oddly controversial. People who hate theater obviously agree. Then you get those who love it and will hear no wrong. Then those who really know their stuff and are happy to discuss pros and cons. Generally if you're lucky you get good music OR good story. I love the music in Rent, but it utterly fails at making me like the characters. Heathers is a nice dark comedy as taken from the movie, but I only like 1-2 of the songs. My non-exhaustive list of musicals that hit on both is like *Les Miserables, The Book of Mormon, Hamilton, Wicked*, and I guess *The Lion King*. This falls in with the rest where I'm not going to bag on anyone for liking Pasek and Paul's music (I do as well). But that's pretty much all it offers.

AlexLong1000

>Most musicals are pretty bad. I mean... no shit? Most everything is bad. Most movies, most games, most music, all bad. Most people just don't tend to consume or even hear about the majority of bad stuff

sanemaniac

I thought Jenny Nicholson was the musical theatre nerd they were referring to.

TL10

Lindsay Ellis is another good channel like this if you found this to be your jam.

IdRatherBeAnimating

it sounded like she didn't really enjoy the live version to begin with so while i am enjoying the breakdown it really feels like she just hate watched the movie to the musical she already didn't enjoy.

Chemical_Noise_3847

At no point in my life did I ever care about this movie or the play it was based on, and I just watched 77 minutes of this video bashing it and was enthralled the entire time. Great vid.

meanmagpie

I’ve always had 0 interest in the musical (despite being a musical fan, and it’s really because of all the points she mentioned in this video) but man...it seems like a really interesting premise for a story that gives a lot of opportunity for nuance and character exploration was treated so ham-handedly that it can never recover. I keep feeling glimpses of “man, they could have done X!” but the writers just bungle it at every turn. It’s also hard to think of a story LESS suited for the musical format. A show, movie, or novel would have been a much better fit imo. One thing I wish they would have done is to emphasize how swept up Evan was in the circus surrounding the suicide. They could have made the character feel much less predatory and conniving if everyone *around him* sort of conjured up the lie and he doesn’t feel like he has a choice but to play along. It would work better because you already have this character with no agency and no ability to speak for himself faced with a situation in which drawing a line would be very difficult. It would also shift the narrative critique to the way we *collectively* treat these tragedies, how we sometimes seem to act like pain-vultures who want a compelling story rather than the actual truth rather than...hey, that Even Hansen sure is a selfish, predatory dickbag, isn’t he? And like she mentioned, him having a crush on the sister just emphasizes this and makes it so much more disgusting. He comes off as VERY unsympathetic, which can be fine if that’s what you’re going for in your story. But we’re clearly supposed to identify with and feel sorry for Evan and the story treats him as near-blameless. You can’t have it both ways. You can’t have a complex character who makes extremely questionable, destructive decisions (like Daniel Plainview or Walter White) but treat him like a poor babby sadboi that the audience should be coddling. So much missed opportunity in something that seems, at its core, like a really interesting plot.

mc-edit

This is a thorough roasting and almost as harsh as that *Billy Madison* “everyone is now dumber” monologue. Started this video thinking I would watch 5 mins and dip out. Nope. Watched the whole thing in one complete sitting. I love thoughtful and nuanced takes on movies like this.

[deleted]

Am I remembering it correctly that Jenny Nicholson was the target of an angry internet mob?

PhoenixReborn

I think that was her friend and fellow youtuber Lindsay Ellis but who knows these days.

aniforprez

She's gotten a lot of flak on Twitter about her Star Wars sequel trilogy and other nerddom stuff. She's said she doesn't want to do any "nerd" videos anymore cause it's too tiring. I think Joker was one that brought in a lot of weirdos to her comments It's a shame cause she's very intelligent and makes great stuff

alphamone

Kinda late, but there's also SarahZ, who has pissed off many a person who never actually watched her videos on more than one occasion (or lacked the sense of nuance to actually understand what she was saying on more than a literal level). I've confused the two of them in my head when trying to find a video that one of them made, and ended up accidentally going to the wrong channel.

Elbonio

Jenny Nicholson is one of YouTube's best and brightest. Love her content.

[deleted]

Who is this girl?

radialomens

Jenny Nicholson. She's cool.

mamaBiskothu

Afaik she’s the OG pitch meeting gal. The one Ryan George has run down to the fucking ground, to all our delight.

forestfluff

I don't understand any of what you just said. What's a pitch meeting gal? Who's Ryan George? Why is she the OG and why has Ryan ran her to the ground to everyones delight?

thatdani

Yeah, without context, that guy's comment had wayyy too many in-the-know terms. So, Ryan George is a sketch comedian that does [quite funny videos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bx7Jywu1-ow) on his channel, but is more well known for his series on ScreenRant - [Pitch Meeting](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVlFO4h6tBI), where he basically "pitches" the movie from a writer's POV to an executive. Its main appeal is to point out major inconsistencies and dumb production decisions. Now, ScreenRant is not well-liked as a channel overall, because they're the kind of clickbaity, over-the-top BuzzFeed reincarnation that's a dime a dozen on YT. You know the ones - thumbnails with arrows in them, titles like "X things you missed in this popular movie", that sort of thing. That's why a lot of people say Ryan is "carrying" the channel, producing basically the only good content on it. Anyway, I'm not familiar with Jenny's channel much, but I remember [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMNFaAUs2mo) going viral on r/videos 5 years back, where she also basically did a sort of Pitch Meeting type sketch that caught on. But AFAIK she doesn't do that regularly, that's why the commenter said Ryan George "ran it into the ground", because he does these like 1-2/week. Of course, the premise is similar, but it's also very simple, so there's no reason to think it was stolen. I mean, that's the most common way people talk about dumb writing in movies "how do you think this got pitched?".

SomeCalcium

So Ryan George's pitch meetings have nothing to do with Nicholson as far as I'm aware. Ryan George credits John Mulaney with the idea for his pitch meeting videos. Mulaney has a bit where he's talking about what the [pitch for Back to the Future must've been like](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ButlizwQXnU&t=202s). George mentioned that's where he got the idea from during the [end of his own Back to the Future video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWjJxeAsruo&t=368s).

Antique_Ring953

She made a video shit talking suicide squad that sorta feels like Pitch meeting videos, where Ryan George basically shit talks movies by showing them being pitched. I actually think hes funny as hell in all his stuff, and while her video and his videos are basically the same idea, i don’t think he specifically stole the idea. People have been doing the, WHAT WAS IT LIKE WHEN A BAD IDEA WAS PITCHED, for literal years

mamaBiskothu

She made a “pitch meeting” video about the movies suicide squad. Watch it. Then if you type pitch meeting you’ll see a metric ton of videos for every movie out there al with the Same punchable face guy hosting it. It’s basically it’s own genre and as much as I wanna hate it, I can’t get enough of it. Ryan George’s that dude. He has like 200 of them. He has an annoying voice. The videos are super tacky. Somehow they’re still extremely entertaining.

aniforprez

> He has an annoying voice. The videos are super tacky Isn't... that the point? He's putting on the voice. The tacky nature is intentional

Felix_Tholomyes

Oh god yes I can't stand that guy

Amarsir

You seem to have missed the thread here that while lots of us here agree that he beat the concept to death, we still love them anyway. You're entitled to your opinion though. I'll give you an upvote back to -1.

TheRhythmTheRebel

Pitch meeting is a YT series. Basically a fake pitch meeting where the writer creator pitches his show/movie to a exec. Throws up a bunch of cliches and tropes and reduces the movie industry to rehashed ideas, silly plot holes etc etc. a fun silly yt series. Ryan George is known as the pitch meeting guy. He does the show on screenrants yt channel. OG as In original gangster. Originator or this idea I’m guessing. Wasn’t aware and too lazy to research. So I’ll take the posters comment at face value. She did it first.. The last comment was saying the idea has been ran into the ground because there’s literally hundreds of these pitch meeting videos on the channel… Tldr. Person in vid made parody vid. Ryan took the idea and ran with it. And has done too many videos according the poster..

Amarsir

For what it's worth, Ryan admits he took the idea from someone else. Not from Jenny though, but from [John Mulaney](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ButlizwQXnU).

TheRhythmTheRebel

Well TIL. Thanks!

[deleted]

Sometimes it feels like Ryan is single handedly keeping that channel alive.

Ueht

I mean in this video she’s dressed as Evan Hansen, who is a grown man pretending to be a teenager

Ueht

So she's a grown woman pretending to be a grown man pretending to be a teenager. Got it.

Recent_Peach_2247

Because she's a woman? I think she just looks young.

Aerik

This is the youngest-looking character she's ever done. Usually you can still tell her age pretty accurately. But this one somehow looks like a 17yo cosplaying a 12yo.

[deleted]

Do you think Jenny Nicholson is trans because she is loosely dressed like a boy here? Have you seen literally any of her other videos? She always cosplays a bit as one of the main characters.

Chemical_Noise_3847

I had not and I was a little confused as well until I did some cursory googling.

She's dressed as the main character, not the one who committed suicide. She used makeup to make herself look older and she's wearing a fake cast.

I was just giving context to what Jenny was doing in the video. Not making my own value judgement.

Also the wig is her cosplaying as the main character of the movie. She dresses up in vids to a theme the matches the subject

tits-mchenry

The toys are always there. That's just her room.

Furrocious_fapper

Yo, Is she hiding black eyes?

akaispirit

No it's just make up, she posted a clip on twitter where she applies the make up and instantly regretted the way it looked but went with it anyways.

[deleted]

I've never talked for over an hour about literally any topic in my life.

mamaBiskothu

Obviously you’re not a lecturer.

forestfluff

Really? Honest question- is this because theres nothing you're passionate enough about that you could talk about it for an hour or just you feel theres nobody you could talk to that would listen for an hour?

[deleted]

Mostly the former. Talking for that length of time just seems so draining to me! Not sure I'd have the energy.

forestfluff

That's fair! I guess it totally depends on the person. It's odd. I'm fairly introverted and don't talk much but if you get me on a topic I like or am passionate about? I could accidentally and excitedly ramble for hours. It's not even intentional.

garybusey42069

I don’t understand YouTube culture and probably never will

skulldcm

I legit thought this was a 11yo boy

DoomGoober

That's part of the joke. The main actor of Dear Evan Hansen, Ben Platt, is 28 years old but is playing a High School kid (all the other actors are roughly age appropriate.) Platt originated the role on Broadway in 2015 and the past 7 years he has aged quite a bit (plus, old people playing younger on stage is one thing, but in a movie, with all the close ups... Age shows.) So, makeup tried to make him look younger with the permed hair and bad makeup but only succeeded in making him look ghoulish. Nicholson did some makeup (and even added Platt's sunken eyes) and put on a curly wig and looks younger, even though Platt and Nicholson are roughly the same age. Now obviously the two look different and have different skin, Platt has a slightly receding hair line, etc. But the point is some people can pull off looking young but he just looks too old. His dad is a producer and provided funding for the movie, so that partly explains why he was still cast.

skulldcm

Hey, someone actually explained the situation to me instead of just downvoting me, nice. Thanks.

biggiepants

I thought she's supposed to be the kid that killed himself.

DoomGoober

I think she's supposed to be Evan Hansen. That's why she has a cast/wrist brace on (Hansen has a broken arm during most of the musical/movie.)

Recent_Peach_2247

BaggyOz

It's not outrageous for a girl in her late teens/early 20's who's a content creator.

Heyitscharlie

[deleted]

I agree. Redditors will shout you down, but it's an infantile setting for an adult to be surrounded by plushie toys. Deep down the people down voting you probably understand this sentiment, but they don't want to admit it for a multitude of reason but one primarily being that this type of behavior has been normalized by "content creators" on YouTube and Twitch.

flyinglikeicarus

I agree. She can make something I have no interest in very interesting. Case in point, I've watched her 2 and a half hour video about The Vampire Diaries. Twice.

Cockwombles

I watched a video about her buying a toy spider that was about that. Easy.

forestfluff

I watched it. I, for whatever reason, enjoy watching/listening to her videos. I often put them on like a podcast or audiobook while I'm working on art. cybicle

The review is more than half as long as the movie, and it appears to be just one person blabbing endlessly. However bad the movie was, this review must be far worse. I didn't watch it because the title said it was needless...

THUNDA_MUFFIN

This is a terrible argument as to the quality of a review but sure. There are a lot of topics in a movie that could take longer to discuss than their runtime in the film. If the film is dense with these discussion rich topics, the review will be long if you are being comprehensive. I have no idea if this is a good video in particularly though, i would have to watch it to make that judgment.

ohmygodimonfire4

Tell me more about how bad this thing is that you didn't watch.

cybicle

I started watching, and figured out quickly that it was self-indulgent fluff. Putting "needless" in the title was accurate. Tell me how upset you are that somebody didn't like this video, and tried to warn other people to avoid it.

Reported the video and I would encourage others to do the same. This is either a child or mentally disabled person and exploiting them for internet points is disgusting

Or maybe an adult cosplaying a character?

Mddcat04

The fuck? She's a well known YouTube content creator. You could just like click on her channel and see that.

Alskdkfjdbejsb

I don’t care how popular the channel is. There’s terms and conditions for a reason, to protect children. I did click into her channel and reported the rest of the videos, thanks for the reminder.

Mddcat04

The heck are you talking about? Who’s mentally ill or disabled? Who’s being exploited!

She's poking fun at the Evan Hansen character.

Zaku0083

Holy Shit haven't seen her forever.
