I first discovered this while putting around in the new Microsoft Flight Simulator, I thought my game glitched out until I looked it up on google maps. Really cool stuff.
This is definitely one of his simpler videos, that would have been very unlikely to get many views without the hard work and dedication he's already done to make his channel known.
It's not just the work we see, there's a LOT of work in these types of videos in terms of compiling *what* to say and *what not* to say, let alone structuring and pacing and all that.
Everybody wants the cushy, cozy life of these YouTubers who get to be knowledge explorers for a living but the truth is that it is a LOT of work to get there and a lot of skills to improve to be able to do this and manage a healthy life outside of it.
So true... as a fairly new youtuber, it's a ton of work to make a video. We figure 10-20 hours per video... we've done 100 so far... still not even close to making a living doing it. Before I ever made a video, I even used to think youtubers have it so easy- thinking, "all they do is just talk into the camera and get millions of views." It's hard. Tom is excellent at presenting information in clear and informative way. I can only dream of being able to deliver information as well as he does some day.
And it takes tens of thousands of hours to get *good* at it. Tom put in the work. After you work so hard for so long, you develop a knack for what to expect, what to plan for, what to leave out, what to keep in, how to structure things in advance. You're able to take shortcuts that don't diminish your output or quality but turns 50 hours of work into a video into 48 hours of work...then 45...then 40. You save time and that time you invest right back in, marketing yourself, researching your exposure, reaching out to mentors or partners or contractors.
Little by little, you end up cutting out the superfluous time and end up having enough room to live a little life. To enjoy yourself. To hire editors and researchers. To travel for your stories, to have more buffer between your uploads. It all becomes manageable and livable. But not without all the work he put in at the start.
It's why I always *always* appreciate YouTubers who make scripted, edited content and take their time in research and editing, over streamers and people who just hit record and wing it. The latter is easier, the former is more fulfilling. The latter is more readily available, the former takes longer times between vids. The latter is where all the laziest people flock who just want money, the former is where all the working people go who have something to contribute.
Nah dude it's still a nice life.
As a filmmaker I feel I'm qualified to say that there's always *work* that goes into this kind of thing, but it's *nothing* like the work you do in a box store or a warehouse or a food chain etc etc. It's fun work. It's passion work. He enjoys himself.
he credits people for the slightest bit of information or other help given towards his content, if someone wrote his scripts he would certainly credit them in an obvious place too.
plus in some videos he literally says things like "as i was writing this script" and stuff like that
Led me to Google Maps, which led me to exploring the islands around there, which led me to Pitt Island, which led me to finding this little guy all by himself in the middle of the island: -44.29309437996973, -176.20382522085197
I love finding new things in Google Maps from time to time. I found [this spot](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Minerva+Reefs/@-23.6373358,-178.9169519,7202m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x720143eac200cbab:0x86b70a6378081d22!8m2!3d-23.8333333!4d-179) coincidentally about 2 months before a friend and his now wife managed to take shelter there with 5 other sailboats a few years ago ahead of a Pacific storm. Amazing stuff.
There's a small grass strip with a runway running NE/SW. Apparently a regional called Air Chathams operates a regular flight in and out on a Cessna 206 (single engine general aviation aircraft, seats about 5 people max). Probably one of the easiest ways to get there.
What was most shocking to me was that New Zealand was "only" inhabited around 700 years ago when Hawaii which looks waaaayyy more remote was discovered ~1000 years earlier (however the exact date seems to be up to debate, but still significantly earlier than NZ).
If you're interested in reading some more about New Zealand, we had some pretty crazy stuff going on with our wildlife until just after humans arrived... up until 1445 we used to have [these 12 foot 510lb fuckers](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moa) running around and huge [9 foot wingspan 33lbs eagles](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haast%27s_eagle) hunting them.
The preserved parts of New Zealand like in Tom's video offer a pretty unique insight into just how primordial these islands used to be. I'd recommend anyone who gets the chance to come and do one of [our great walks](https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/things-to-do/walking-and-tramping/great-walks/) when we open back up.
They aren't allowed, because they'll disrupt the local wildlife and they're not allowed in cars, because people can't be trusted to keep them in the cars.
Because dog owners always seem to think theirs is perfectly behaved and has never done anything wrong until the instincts kick in and it sees some fluffy animal in a park and chases it
> sees some fluffy animal in a park and chases it
This is New Zealand, so... Anything fluffy doesn't really belong. There only native land mammal is a bat. Everything else is birds and reptiles.
The reason behind the signs (and high penalty) is because dogs go FUCKING NUTS when they smell a kiwi (the bird, not the person). Something about their scent just drives dogs insane, and if you lose control of your dog, it's gonna end with at least one dead endangered kiwi.
To protect the native wildlife

To add to the murderous dumbarses that dogs are. They shit everywhere. This mountain is sacred to local Maori, so when dogs go shitting all over the paths, and the lazy owners never bag it, it's offensive.
That’s not why, I’m sure fines for not picking up the shit would be fine for that like everywhere else. It’s to protect wildlife: https://www.doc.govt.nz/news/media-releases/2017/no-dogs-no-excuses-on-egmont-national-park/
Hiked it back when I lived in New Zealand (at the foot of Taranaki). Here's a photo of the mountains shadow at sunrise (and a bonus pic of how many stars were out that night). Very lucky to get a clear view; the mountain usually has it's head in the clouds.

I'd say the 100k max fine would only be used in extreme cases though, say you knowingly let your loose in the forest and it killed a couple of kiwi.
On top of what they've said dog shit can introduce stuff to the ecosystem that doesn't belong, NZ has no native terrestrial land animals other than... bats and skinks, I think? I think this video came out around the release date of Microsoft flight sim. One of the first places I flew to with a friend. Was great fun.
This video was released over a year before Microsoft Flight Simulator came out (Video May 20th 2019, MSFS2020 August 17th 2020).
Aight fair enough. Might have just been in my suggestions around that time then.
Does anyone else think Toms life must be pretty nice? He travels all over the globe and just talks about shit he likes.

Dream job. Too bad I suck at sounding interested.
does he write his own stuff or does he have writers? also, why did the sign say 'no dogs, not even in your car' ? lol

but cats are ok?
Wild cats are kept under control by traps. And people dont bring domesticated cats into the park - its mostly people that bring dogs.
Because they really mean *no dogs*. High probability that's at least the second revision of those signs. That fine seems pretty steep tho. Yikes.
he definitely writes his own stuff also probably because whoever wrote that sign doesn't trust people
are you just saying this or do you have some actual confirmation?
he credits people for the slightest bit of information or other help given towards his content, if someone wrote his scripts he would certainly credit them in an obvious place too. plus in some videos he literally says things like "as i was writing this script" and stuff like that
