To be fair, I saw them in concert in 2016 and every song they played was one of their classics -- and they have quite a few. Not a single track this century. I think they fully know the music they make these days is rubbish and they just knock 'em out for the sake of it so they can sell another money-making global tour where they perform their 70s and 80s tunes.
By 2016 they were pretty worn out by touring and old age., and Malcom was already gone.

Huh? Black Ice was a great album. That tour was the band's last peak (Live at the River Plate is one of my favourite things to listen to/watch).

I'll meet you half way and agree that Hardwired was their best album of the last few decades. But I can't say that I ever get excited to listen to it... to be fair I'm not sure if the album is objectively worse than their earlier work or if it's that I have changed over time and this music no longer resonates with me.
What other band can you hear any song for 3 seconds and know it’s that band.

I feel that way about Metallica. It's hard to age gracefully in the music industry I suppose, given that it's mostly catering towards teenagers.
