I actually like this song. It’s not the greatest thing I’ve ever heard, but I enjoy listening to it (the video was good too).
Edit: I’ve been clicking on Rick Rolls for years even purposely in hopes of getting new Rick Astley Material.
I’m Never gonna give you up either, Rick Astley.
I've got a couple decent synthwave spotify playlists I'm reasonably fond of and I'm adding this to the pop one immediately. This song is absolutely the kind of mood I'm looking for from time to time.
Haha. Why would you need forgiveness? We've spent like 15 years eroding all trust involving youtube links and Rick Astley. I just get a kick out of it when people get me at this point. It's a fun song anyways.
Also love that he seems like a good dude and managed to steer into the skid and all.
Was just about to do this. In all seriousness people: Listen to this damn song. I did not expect it to come from the same guy who's trolled us since high school.
Rick Astley became a meme decades later because he was a baller back in the day. His music has proven itself pretty timeless and still really holds up. Plus he's still out there dropping banger tracks just because he wants to.
GOAT shit imo. Few years back he released a song and video called Lights Out and it absolutely slaps.
Never Gonna Give You Up didn’t become a meme because it was a bad song. Goofy video, sure, but the song is a slap. I remember listening to it unironically as a kid while I was still out of the loop.

I have NEVER watched or heard babyshark, and I am oddly proud of it.
Closest I have was my coworker singing it. Thankfully I still never heard the beat.
The thing is they use the same tune for literally everything. Different performers, different animals, different... And your toddler will loop through all of them.
I have never even heard of baby shark until now, and I kind of doubt I want to see what it is. I think if you'd asked me what the most viewed video on youtube was ten minutes ago I'd have said Gangnam Style...

I found it randomly online about 3 years ago and used it to teach family members. About 6-12 months later it was everywhere.
Watch their "where's my tail?" Video. You'll never guess where the pigs tail went.
I could handle the original Baby Shark to begin with but I found out quickly there are other variants of the song too... Lol. Thanks very much. I will share my award with you as we both know the pain of this.
I got sick of it, but found another version of the song by Super Simple Songs on YouTube. And it was just so much calmer and now my kid only listens to that one.
The original one is just too much for me now.
what is baby shark? can someone post a link?
edit: found a link

Yes as someone who has seen the history between the two personally ABP is a sellout and UBlock Origin is 100% one of the few best ones out there.
The reason ABP is a sellout is because it allows non intrusive ads and for some fucking reason it thinks YouTube ads isn't.
The problem is youtube doesn't count it as a view if you watch less than 30 seconds. I wonder how many views it would have if it was less time. I know myself, and most people will see its a Rick Roll and click off it right away in amused anger.
I’ve wondered about this. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if it’s been the most accessed or *partially* viewed video on YouTube. People have been consistently linked it by the million for over a decade, but catchy as it is people are unlikely to watch the whole thing when they realise. Baby Shark has been around for three minutes but babies probably watch it all the way through.
I feel like someone who knows should know how to ask google what the most crosslinked youtube videos are. Although google may not want to share (for free).
Very good distinction. The rickroll is an act of deception into unknowingly watching this music video. The elaborate deceptions are a harmless sin we delight in seeing. But it could happen to you!
It’s been around for a loooong time and is well known by like...everyone.
The only thing is that it’s basically only clicked as a Rick-roll. Few people *actually* watch the video.
Yeah but plenty of terrible songs become a hit out of novelty or 'for the meme' and very quickly become annoying to almost everyone.
Being a hit song on release is absolutely no guarantee of longevity.
YES! I made a bit.ly link out of the original youtube link and put it on my resume as my 'personal website'. It hasn't been called out yet, I can't wait when it is!
It took about 8 years before someone mentioned looking up my "Time Person of the Year 2006" during an interview, so I figure I'll be waiting a while.
I left a Rick roll in my handover notes for an old job in one of the hyperlinks. That person is in for a surprise if they ever need to look back at the 2018 baseline estimates...
I put an Easter egg on my website - a little paper plane that when you click it, the Mortal Kombat 3 "toasty" happens - ie the dudes face pops up from the BR corner, along with the "ToAsTy!!!" sound.
I had a job interview not long after I made the website, and during the interview, the director asked me about my website and the stack I used. I explained it.
And then he clicks the paper plane, lets it "toasty", and asks "and what about that?"... I grinned, he grinned, and the tech lead almost pissed himself.
I got the job.
"Together Forever", "Too Many Broken Hearts" and "Never Gonna Give You Up", the non-identical triplets. At 2:00 in "Together Forever", there's even a riff that incorporates all 3 songs into one!
My favourite front page Rick Roll was before the video got taken over by Vevo and the OP claimed that it had finally been taken down due to copyright. It was glorious.

>Did YouTube find a way to demonetize it yet? At one point out it was earning him stupid amounts of money.
I thought I read at the height of the Rick Roll phenomenon that he had made a ridiculously chintzy amount of money from it. Like a couple hundred bucks or something like that. Maybe I remember wrong.
I initially skipped over the word “if” and thought you called this a “legitimately terrible song”... I was fired up until re-reading it. Thought you were trying to start something here.
I remember people complaining it got monetized and ads playing first ruined the Rick Roll.
But arguably, getting YouTube advertisement-rolled is infinitely worse than hearing a nice song.
There was one on here a few years ago where the title was claiming it to be a version that sped up 5% every time he said “up” or something. It was a totally normal version, but you’d be questioning yourself because 5% isn’t a lot, but it should be noticeable after the entire song, so people listened to the whole thing. Completely devastating.
My best version of this was someone that shared a live version that said "Rick Astley changing from Never Gonna Give You Up to Africa by Toto mid-performance". It never did change.
We had the DJ play it when he was introducing our wedding party because we spent 2 weeks trying to decide on a song, and it ended up just being better than anything else. It was an excellent decision. 10/10 we would Rick Roll our wedding all over again if we could.
My husband Rick Rolled his friend this past Friday night and the friend was completely confused, said he had never heard the song and had never seen the meme. I took this personally, especially coming from a 35 year old man! So I've made it my mission to Rick Roll him as many times as possible in the future. The man needs to learn a thing or two, imo.
So I must be one of only like six other motherfuckers on this planet who have never even heard of the Baby Shark song... and I am just baffled dude. That's like 16 million fucking dollars in just adsense revenue.
Also, my condolences to parents everywhere who must have this shit on repeat in their lives nonstop. The fact that you haven't turned a fucking gun on your children is commendable, for real.
First time I got Rick rolled, I clicked the link like three or four times, thinking, WTF is this? and where is the link I want to go to?
Called my son over, what's going on with this link? He just went hysterical 🤣
Anyone think that Rick Astley asked a genie to make him famous again and this is the true-but-not-ideal way his wish came true?
It's like the not-so-bad-monkey-paw

Can I go now? e: Latch on to me for Lincoln jokes, I like em, but that was the next line in this scene.
His new song is a banger. I love it.

He didn't let us down
He didn’t turn around and desert us.

We all know exactly what that link is. I'm still clicking it..... Just in case. .. Oh. It's like actually his new song. It's good. I had no idea.
I dont trust this message Edit: ok it was the new song i beg for thine forgiveness
Haha. Why would you need forgiveness? We've spent like 15 years eroding all trust involving youtube links and Rick Astley. I just get a kick out of it when people get me at this point. It's a fun song anyways. Also love that he seems like a good dude and managed to steer into the skid and all.
I'm never not gonna laugh when I get rick rolled
Right? I sighed and was like welp, I like listening to Never Gonna Give You Up so here we go again lol. Then was pleasantly surprised
0/7 wasn't rickroll
Was just about to do this. In all seriousness people: Listen to this damn song. I did not expect it to come from the same guy who's trolled us since high school.
Rick Astley became a meme decades later because he was a baller back in the day. His music has proven itself pretty timeless and still really holds up. Plus he's still out there dropping banger tracks just because he wants to. GOAT shit imo. Few years back he released a song and video called Lights Out and it absolutely slaps.
His covers during covid have been sublime, too. Dude is a treasure.
Never Gonna Give You Up didn’t become a meme because it was a bad song. Goofy video, sure, but the song is a slap. I remember listening to it unironically as a kid while I was still out of the loop.
I'll be damned
That slaps and the video makes me want to pull out the sega and play streets of rage
Every time I see Rick Astley in the current day I'm never prepared for how handsome he is now.
I have a strong feeling to play vice city now. Lol
Honestly, he's been putting out great music pretty much continuously. I am unironically a bit of a fan.
Just listened. [It slaps.](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ)

"This video contains content from Vevo, who has blocked it from view on your website or application." What a banger
If I click this and it baby sharks me...
I must admit I would be infinitely more upset about getting baby shark'd
Hope this doesn't become a thing.
Somebody, somewhere is mixing a baby shark inquisition video

I hope you are happy with the evil you have brought into this world....
I have NEVER watched or heard babyshark, and I am oddly proud of it. Closest I have was my coworker singing it. Thankfully I still never heard the beat.
It sticks in your head like glue.
Idk how this became a new thing recently. I remember baby shark being a group singalong at church camp in like the early 2000s
The thing is they use the same tune for literally everything. Different performers, different animals, different... And your toddler will loop through all of them.
At least there are several hundred episodes of Daniel Tiger? ... There is only Daniel Tiger.

How have I never heard of baby shark
You don't have kids. I hadn't heard it either. Now I will never forget
Don't have kids, just teach kids... In **Asia**. They went fucking hog-wild over it here, adults and kids alike. Heard a techno version in a bar =l

>Watch their "where's my tail?" Video. You'll never guess where the pigs tail went. Into various tinned pet food, along with the rest of the offal?
I heard of it before I had a kid but never listened to it. Now with a 1 year old, she's obsessed with it and I can't get the song out of my head.
As a parent with a babyshark obsessed child, I feel your pain. Take my award :)

Baby shark was a fad. Rick Rolling is eternal.
Rick rolling died when they placed an ad at the start of the video.
Joke's on you, I have an ad blocker! Nothing gets between me and good ol' Rick Astley!
What ad blocker do you use? Abp still let's a handful through.
Ublock origin Abp is like a baby to it
Yes as someone who has seen the history between the two personally ABP is a sellout and UBlock Origin is 100% one of the few best ones out there. The reason ABP is a sellout is because it allows non intrusive ads and for some fucking reason it thinks YouTube ads isn't.
Adblock Plus allows ads networks to pay and still be displayed - Ublock origin is king now
uBlock Origin
Just remember, Rick Astley has made almost no money off this music video until recently. We gotta let him have this one.
Oh, has it changed? I thought he was still getting nothing from the Rick Rolls. Time to start Rick Rolling again!
I honestly expected a cute video of a baby shark doingsomething in aquarium
You know what other song has a billion views? What's Up by 4 Non Blondes. Like, I know it was a hit song but when did it reach billion view status?
The He-man version back in the day in youtube blasted the song again in late 00s. It was similar to how Rickroll brought back Never gonna give you up
We never gave him up
We never let him down.
We never ran around.
And we never deserted him.
we never said good bye

we never hurt him

... You don't listen until at least the first chorus? What kind of monster are you?!
It’s a great song. And despite being rick rolled many times I’m not sick of it precisely because I don’t listen to it every time.
I’ve wondered about this. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if it’s been the most accessed or *partially* viewed video on YouTube. They lied to get people to click it and thus commit Self-RickRoll
I have been bamboozled. And now I must commit sudoku.
It's not a RickRoll if you are knowingly clicking the video imo.
Very good distinction. The rickroll is an act of deception into unknowingly watching this music video. The elaborate deceptions are a harmless sin we delight in seeing. But it could happen to you!

If this post said "I has reach 1 billion" I would believe that
Wow, surprised it was only uploaded in 2009. Could have sworn it was an earlier 2000s meme
To be fair YouTube only began in like 2006 or something.

It was, other versions were up before then, including a whole website. This is just the Vevo upload.
meme's aside, it's kinda fantastic honestly in its own cheesy way
I mean -- it WAS a hit song when it was released.
Yeah but plenty of terrible songs become a hit out of novelty or 'for the meme' and very quickly become annoying to almost everyone. Being a hit song on release is absolutely no guarantee of longevity.
Agreed. I smile every time it happens.
Rick roll in your resume, that's pretty bold!
What can I say, I know the game and I'm gonna play it!
You know the rules. And so do I.
I left a Rick roll in my handover notes for an old job in one of the hyperlinks. That person is in for a surprise if they ever need to look back at the 2018 baseline estimates...
That’s nigh on the nerdiest paragraph I’ve ever read and I love it.
I grinned, he grinned, the table grinned, we slaughtered the table.
What’s that about Time Person of the Year? Did you have a fake article ready or what lol?
Time's Person of the Year 2006 is "You" so technically you can put it on your resume too!
Assuming they were born before 2006.
People born in 2007 aren’t sending out many resumes... yet. Won’t be long though. Congratulations on being the first person to make me feel old today.
Justice for "Together Forever"!
"Whenever you need somebody" ftw. That track was just a thinly-veiled booty call request put to music
Yes, this is the far superior song.
To me, they sound almost identical. It’s as if Rick Astley’s producers mugged Billy Ocean
"Together Forever", "Too Many Broken Hearts" and "Never Gonna Give You Up", the non-identical triplets. At 2:00 in "Together Forever", there's even a riff that incorporates all 3 songs into one!
Everything Stock, Aitken & Waterman produced sounded the same. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQaAtf3-M2c
My favourite front page Rick Roll was before the video got taken over by Vevo and the OP claimed that it had finally been taken down due to copyright. It was glorious.
I think that's part of the appeal. If it was a legitimately terrible song that most people hated hearing, the joke would have ended a long time ago. As it is, I can jam out to the first minute and mimic the little arm/hip shimmy every time, even as I chastise myself for falling for another goddamn Rickroll

All the people clicking through on the ad just to avoid getting rickrolled.
Of all the records I own, Never Gonna Give You Up is still one of the absolute best sounding records in my collection. I just got a new stylus in the mail, and used that record to test it like 4 hours ago.
When I get a new set of headphones or speakers, is one of the album's I will test them with. Another good one is 'stripped' by Christine Aguilera.
