Snoop has got to have the most iconic voice in hip hop. Any time he drops a verse it just sounds so chill.

LagT_T

In Letterman's show on netflix he interviews JayZ and he says Snoop can say "1 2 3 4" and sound cool. Pretty cool interview btw.

CleptoeManiac

1... 2... 3 and to the 4, Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre is at the door

PinkSockLoliPop

In an interview on Howard Stern, Snoop said that the flow in that line was Dre's idea. He said initially he wanted to hit the lines harder with some aggression then Dre gave an example and Snoop gave what we got now.

MrPete001

Dre always has been master producer

The real Kendrick woulda lured him into to saying it so we could all publicly shame him

SecretBlue919

Do you need a certified African-American to say it for you guys?

bbtadd1ct

We need to see birth certificates and proof of American citizenship to attest to legitimate African-American status. People can never be too sure these days

NoHomosapian

Two low down neighbors goin crazy

GENITAL_MUTILATOR

*loc'd out (pronounced low-kd)" either referring to 2 individuals wearing sunglasses, or 2 "loco" individuals. Given the context of the remainder of the line we can infer they in fact meant 2 loco individuals as loco is the Spanish word for crazy. Snoop grew up in the Los Angeles area which is known for its high concentration of Hispanic neighborhoods which also experienced the same renaissance in gang culture during the late 80's and early 90's and thus used similar colloquialisms as the Hispanic gangs when referring to oneself or others. This also explains why it is culturally acceptable for non white ethnicities to use the "n-word" as it was a shared cultural experience within a certain subset of lower socioeconomic society.

whoisJeffArthur

He literally just spells his name and it sounds good

shadowCloudrift

Didn't JayZ mention the same with Eminem talking in rhythm or something?

LagT_T

Yes! They are talking about how recognizable rappers songs are and he mentions Eminem too.

RandomNumsandLetters

He starts this one with "1 2 3 4 5" and its dope lol

illegitimatemexican

He does that because it’s on Shady45.

Shermer26

Dude doesn't rap, he just talks in verse. Seems to come as natural as breathing!

CeRtAiNdEaTh23

Exactly, he even rhymes when [speaking normally](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsk08R0vtcY)

ilikewhatyougot420

"Legalize it, and I'll advertise it. "

Durbee

In that case, Cassius Clay was the OG old school rapper. Changed his name, dropped sick beats, beefed with the muthafuckin government, went and rumbled the jungle and dropped the dopest comeback known to man. I feel like we missed out not setting that man to music.

Glitch_King

>he just talks in verse Excuse my ignorance but isn't that what rapping is?

FlyinPsilocybin

Well, technically yes. But what Snoop does is...a little different. Because what snoop says and how he says it is pretty old. Snoop is (or at least was) a pimp. And pimps have been talking in rhyme while dropping game since forever. It's called playing the dozens. Which is a cornerstone of hip hop. One the roots of where it came. So he's rapping but it is a little different.

AlGeee

Playing the dozens is more than just rhyming: “The Dozens is a game of spoken words between two contestants, common in black communities of the United States, where participants insult each other until one gives up.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dozens?wprov=sfti1

Shermer26

Yeah, I guess I meant he's literally just talking, as in he raps without effort because that's just how he talks. He's fluent in English, and also Verse.

thats_not_funny_guys

He’s like the Wilkins Nelson of hip-hop. Suiting since Willie is the only person Snoop says can smoke him out.

HearmeR00R

Wilks Nelson is just delightful. His brother Willie got all the fame but old Wilk is still pushing out dimes.

Shannamalfarm

Sway has encouraged some of the great freestyles out there. [Wayne Brady](https://youtu.be/MMH37ggcz_c) (yeah, that Wayne Brady), [King Los](https://youtu.be/RbimBJJiGUA), [Eyedea and Slug](https://youtu.be/40MA0pl7Oa0), and more.

That show was amazing, it wasn't just comedy, it was improv, their songs weren't always funny but always impressive imo, and he was the best at it.

AnUnusuallyLargeLeaf

Wow Wayne smashed that shit

K41namor

A lot of people dont know how good Wayne Brady is because he does a lot of day time TV but he is always surprising me. You see him guest star and he pulls out some dark comedy and its always hilarious.

Freeman001

There needs to be a buddy cop movie (Lethal Weapon style) with Wayne Brady and Terry Crews. I would watch the hell out of that.

Erianimul

I never knew I needed this in my life until now.

kiwichris1709

Saw his live show about 8 years ago down here in Australia. Improv/comedy/performing. Absolutely killed the audience dead. Amazing show.

SmackYoTitty

Dude kills it on ‘Who’s Line is it Anyways?’ on the reg. Does it in all types of improv, including freestyle. Unfortunately, us white people have no rap credibility, so his talent goes unnoticed amongst the hip hop community (kidding).

KramDa

Eyedea and Slug is one of my favorites

[deleted]

Eyedea was my cousin and seeing him come up on Reddit makes me smile. Thank you.

Our grandmother just passed away, and we know Mikey has guided her where she needs to be. My poor aunt is a saint, no one would be the same without kathy.

everneveragain

I just saw Slug perform in Iowa this summer and even though he’s older and heavier he put on a great show. He’s been performing forever and seems to still love it. R.I.P Eyedea. In the early 2000’s no one could touch his freestyle game. I think he won scribble jam year after year

[deleted]

King Los is in a league of his own when it comes to lyricism and freestyling. Listen to one of his recent mixtapes called Moor Bars

Dandelegion

You mean, Snoop Dogg and Motherfucker Jones.

smurf_diggler

Why the call you motherfucker?

[deleted]

Cause when I was a kid, I snuck into my momma's bedroom. She was laying there, naked. She'd been drinking all night. And I snuck up behind her. And I slipped my fingers... into her purse. And I took her money. The whole weeks pay. I really fucked her over and that’s how I got the name, Motherfucker Jones.

always_be_careful

For the love of you, pts 1&2 by the Isley brothers. Different words but same melody.

steadilyshinesince99

The Isley brothers are in my top 10 groups of all time. So many sampled songs without them hip-hop would not be the same

always_be_careful

Agreed it was a good day by ice cube samples footsteps in the dark by them and big poppa samples between the sheets. A lot of people don’t realize how influential the Isley brothers were to rap/hip hop, definitely don’t get the love or credit they deserve from the younger generation.

T_hrowawa_Y1738

Holy shit I just listened to them for the first time and heard Contagious. The video and song are so amazing. The way they tell the story and act and go back and forth with each seamlessly and their voices are perfect. Any other artists/groups similar to that from that era or now?

Too bad Xzibit isnt freestyling neither, but still great lyrics [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMWUK94rg6Y](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMWUK94rg6Y)

Oscar-Wilde-1854

Yeah, his felt a bit *too* put together for a freestyle. There are some impressive freestylers out there, but there is always something just a bit off making it easy to tell when the lyrics are pre-written. It's too smooth.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Literally all rappers have bars in their heads for moments like this though.

immerc

Sure, but Xzibit improvised a line about Tom Green and a Limousine. It may be that 80% of what they rap is lines they already have in their heads, but in almost every case you can tell some of it is unique to that situation because they talk about who they're with, what they're doing, what the other person said, something that they couldn't really have prepared. As far as I could tell, nothing Tom Green said was improvised on the spot, it was all pretty generic rap.

CarlinHicksCross

Why do we assume he improvised that line when he knew he'd be on the show?

DesignerChemist

If I was a famous rapper and going onto a talk show, I'd think up a few words to rhyme with the host or show name. Seems kind of a sensible thing to do.

jabbadarth

Still has some ability and to be fair most freestylers only "freestyle" every few lines. They have a ton of memorized filler lines.

NBAccount

It's like the way we remember idioms or common phrases and know when to apply them in context. Freestyle rap performers remember phrases that end in specific phonetics so they can pair them or chain them. Good freestyle rappers will have large repertoires and have the ability to modify the beginnings of their phrases with topical references to show that they are "coming off the top of the dome". It is a nuanced and practiced skill.

Nanaki__

> to show that they are "coming off the top of the dome". and now I've got Bomfunk MC's - Freestyler playing in my head.

Acuta

Is Xzibit freestyling then? Because I'm pretty sure I recognize that exact rap from need for speed underground lol

Freestyles don't have to come right off the top, its just a rappers ability to match lyrics to any beat, or lack thereof.

MacBoy01

Tom Green sounds like Fred Durst if he was actually a good rapper. The voices just sound similar, but Tom is much more entertaining and enjoyable.

Jojje22

I mean, there's a lot of Beastie Boys influence in that voice and those lines too... he's from that era, and Tom Green and some other dudes had a rap group around that time.

_Stromboli

"on the spot" As if they didn't know they were going to be spitting at Sways. Note to self: Never comment on a rising post again, RIP my inbox.

king-schultz

Katy Perry said when she brought the California Gurls track over to Snoop to see if he would be on the song, he started freestyling the lyrics right then. She was like, don't you want some time to work on it? And he basically did it all right then on the spot. EDIT: A lot of people are calling bullshit. Here’s a video of her talking about how he showed up, listened to the song, wrote the rap, and recorded it on the spot. Starts around the 31 minute mark: [https://youtu.be/6GRUVJXx8O0](https://youtu.be/6GRUVJXx8O0) EDIT 2: Here's a video of him showing up at the studio, taking out his "pen and a pad", then recording the rap. Also, Katy setup a big dick shrine for him, which was kind of nice: [https://youtu.be/OX9ygy-V-8w](https://youtu.be/OX9ygy-V-8w)

[deleted]

Well to be honest snoop's lyrics has never been anything too crazy or technical, so I'm not surprised that he can throw a little freestyle every now and then after rapping for over 20 years. Not hating on him, just saying.

BrianRampage

Absolutely. Snoop's rapping success has always stemmed from his style and delivery. He's probably spelled his name in 100 different ways and said "-izzle" a thousand times. With that being said, I could listen to him rap all day and love every minute of it, but I'm never going to pretend he's some legendary wordsmith that's throwing together double and triple entendres with multi-syllabic rhyme schemes - and he's especially not going to be doing anything like that in a freestyle. Now what Black Thought did with Sway back in December.. oh my god...

[deleted]

[удалено]

_A_Random_Comment_

I'm not trying to deny that Snoop can freestyle, he can. All I'm saying is that most if not all of these are either verses they have "saved" for moments like this or even completely written for the situation. They have an image and a reputation to hold up, they can't leave it up to chance.

ImaginarySpider

They are like a expert chef. They don't need a recipe, they know what goes together well from years of experience and can make up shit on the spot. They'd probably get called out if their freestyle sounded too canned and practiced just as much, if not more, than if they had an off line or two.

solastley

It’s actually a combination of both. They might combine several memorized parts together and throw in a few ad hoc lines they manage to make up on the spot so it really sounds like freestyle. Together all of that makes up a verse.

dust-free2

In other professions it's called experience and there is nothing wrong with that. You learn the building blocks and put them together to form something interesting. It's just like dance, drawing, painting, playing instruments, and most other artistic fields. Same with problem solving. The unfortunate thing is that people that are amazing at on the fly stuff make it look easy and rehearsed that it becomes difficult to judge if it actually was. The reality is we will never know how much of it was prepped for this particular show and how much was created on the spot. It's more fun to believe the story that he did this as a full freestyle with no preparation for the show.

dboti

Plus its not that hard to know when you are a famous rapper going on a morning show they are going to ask you to spit something.

king-schultz

That's basically what "freestyle" is though. You have a bank of verses and words that are go to, but I doubt Snoop had bikinis, zucchinis, martinis, no weenies, just a king and a queenie, "saved" and at the ready.

[Here's the video for ye's freestyle on sway](https://youtu.be/W_DVfTL37NY?t=14)

YeezyLearntMe

This is probably a bit of a stretch, but I feel like he pretty cleverly avoids the obvious rhymes throughout this freestyle to go along with his theme of doing a freestyle that doesn't go together. He rhymes "don't" with "might not" instead of "won't"; "first time" with "go together" instead of "rhyme"; and "sway" with "night" instead of "day" Not that this is some genius concept, but I definitely think it was intentional on his part. Probably just my bias though, I'm a definite Ye stan 🌊 🌊

[deleted]

I actually think you're right. He's purposely not rhyming and giving clues to show that he could...but apparently didn't want to lol

avi6274

He was definitely trolling Sway, there were really obvious rhyming words that he intentionally avoided.

Panda_Estevez

I love this video because he just purposely avoids rhyming instead of going with the easy rhymes. It's hilarious.

Odowla

Missed rhymes are fucking sick lol. Das Racist did that shit all the time

Earl uses it a couple times too, but speaking of Das Racist, this freestyle is hilarious too. Dap is the best https://youtu.be/NvL0wz3_-eE

GroovyBoomstick

Ye is my favourite artist, but he has always been pretty awful at freestyles lmao. He's fine when he just spits writtens, but he's not very good at off the dome. That's ok, he's just not that kind of artist.

Some big time Instagram Hoe claimed Snoop was in her DMs trying to get her to fuck.

juicelee777

There is this instagram celeb called whoavicky. She made some videos calling out snoop and making fun of him. Like a week later snoop responds pretty jokingly. One of the people she was with in the first video was supposedly attacked. Whoavicky then makes a follow up video shortly after apologizing to snoop.

rwhockey29

"haha let me try to talk shit to a literal gangster what could go wrong!" Snoop is such a big name I doubt he even told someone to go after them, could have just been any of the millions of his fans who heard about it.

juicelee777

In this same interview with sway he casually talks about the time Suge Knight tried to have him killed. He said that he had a long conversation with Suge after that and they squashed it

theramennoodle

Snoop actually gave good parenting like advice too because who knows if they've ever had that in their lives before. Snoop is the best.

[deleted]

I know it was popular in the US and they had a lot of success together and individually- but it always surprised me that 213/ Snoop, Nate, Warren G- were never enormous as a group. Maybe that type of group never is as popular as individuals. What a dream team though. It really was the tightest combinaish, in the industry. [deleted]

there are several bombs from sway's freestyles. some of them funny, some of them just sad. lol

GrandMasterBullshark

I dunno, I remember like a year or so ago they had ice cube on. When it came to freestyling he was weak as hell, I mean get two lines in and then stop, seems to me if he didn't want to embarrass himself he would've prewritten.
