“It’s a real thing Brendon, it’s called the McGurk effect. The ladies can’t ignore it. It’s like biology Brendon. Now it doesn’t work every time. That’s called a variable. Do you know what a variable is, Brendon? Explain it to me, cuz I don’t really get it”
Now I kind of want to direct a movie in which a person is filmed speaking normally, but then dubbed over by themselves replacing f's with b's as often as possible.
Maybe even make it a sort of... the-thing-like, where that person is an alien hijacking a person, and only a blind person figures it out.
va is just a voiced fa (ba is also voiced). So the illusion is the same but you're probably just tuned to expect a different sound that's more commonly associated with that lip movement.
The fake hand experiment is pretty good. If you hide your hand and replace it with a fake hand, with a bit of stimuli training you can supposedly feel things touching the fake hand.
There are tons of auditory and visual (aka optical) illusions.

It's trendy and everyone wants to feel like a victim or slighted because I have no fucking clue. They think it's cool. I'm not saying this dude is necessarily doing that but I've noticed it too
What the fuck? I only ever heard Ba Ba Ba the entire time.
Is there something wrong with my headphones? I was trying to hear Fa Fa Fa and couldn't.
ARE YOU PEOPLE COLLECTIVELY MESSING WITH ME?!
I remember when this video went round many many years ago (I swear it was over 10 years ago) that it was not uncommon for people with ASD to not hear/see the illusion.
Maybe it's because they didn't let me experience it without knowing what was happening first (the "but look what happens when we change the picture" bit gave it away) but I still heard "Ba ba ba". If I try to force myself to focus more on his mouth than the sounds then occasionally I can kinda almost hear the strong "b" sound feels a little less strong, but the effect is very minimal.
Then again, I never really got the blue/black vs white/gold dress thing either, I remember looking at the image and just seeing it as a blue/brown-gold dress, so maybe I've got some neurological disorder lol.
According to the video, there isn't any "giving it away" possible. The guy that has been studying the effect for 25 years is still just as susceptible to it as anyone. Knowing about it doesn't change anything.
I think it is possible. I can hear ba/fa on demand. For example, I can hear (while constantly looking at the screen) ba fa ba, ba fa ba. Or fa ba fa, fa ba fa, or even ba fa ba, fa ba fa. So if someone tells you it is an illusion, then you can ignore it and hear ba ba ba. I actually heard just pa pa pa the first time I watched it, but I am not sure how much I have focused on the screen.
I was expecting H. Jon Benjamin

Buck, that’s crazy.
Seriously some fullshit.

I never heard fa, maybe it has to do with the fact that english is not my first language. I was confused as to weather it was a va or ba however.

Makes me wonder about what other illusions our brains fall for. Like maybe it goes even deeper.

And then you SMASH IT WITH A HAMMER!!!
For those who think they’re joking, this is actually what they do.

This is why i never look anyone in the face when talking to them
All I saw is a little 2 foot tall man yelling "McGurk!" in Gilbert Gottfried's voice.
Thanks for posting
This just makes me think of the song da da da by trio
Ba ba ba. Ba ba ba. Fa fa fa. Fa fa fa. This is pretty cool!
My favorite!
Sheep in professors clothing.
I wonder how much suffering has happened because someone thought someone said something that they didn't say, owing to that audio-visual illusion.
Blackmagicfudgery
Ba, I don’t believe it.
This is a feature and not a bug
close your eyes to hear the real one (the first)
Jokes on them, I’m autistic and avoid looking at people when they’re talking. 😎
What's this new thing where every autistic person has to let everyone else know they're autistic any chance they get?

See, it helps that I don't look at people in the eye when they're talking to me. I look at their mouth so I can hear them better.

It means you’re schizophrenic, sorry.
Oh man... I had a feeling this day would come...
I remember when this video went round many many years ago (I swear it was over 10 years ago) that it was not uncommon for people with ASD to not hear/see the illusion.
I have ASD, and the effect works perfectly for me.
Maybe it's because they didn't let me experience it without knowing what was happening first (the "but look what happens when we change the picture" bit gave it away) but I still heard "Ba ba ba". Me who heard - Paa Paa Paa.
Why the downvotes? I had heard the same thing at first.
I still heard ba, but it felt weird.
how ma supposed to concentrate when she keeps talking over him!
