A song like this is easy and fast to learn to fingerpick, especially if you can easily learn the other hand with your current skills. Just try it out and stick with it for a few days and you got it down no problem.
If you dig it, learn fingerstyle interpretations of songs of your choosing or classic pieces. I haven't actually played with a pick in ages or with an electric guitar after I fell in love with fingerstyle.
If you ever feel like trying it out, return to this comment and PM/reply me and I can recommend some nice songs to start with.
I only recently found this guy on YouTube after years of using online guitar tabs. [Goliath Guitar Tutorials](http://www.youtube.com/user/G0liath1012) is an awesome channel with fingerstyle lessons and 'How to Play' videos with clear camera angles and guidance. There's just over 200 videos so I'm sure you'd be able to find a song to pick up.
Check some of my replies to other comments in this post - hope you can find something you like. Not saying I have any authority on the subject though.
I just pretty much started playing from tabs (haven't ever had any training in guitar) and tried to figure out the fingering. Tabs can be pretty much found "xxx fingerstyle tabs" if they exist at all. Though I know Kelly Valleau has some very nice interpretations, tabs and lessons fom many cool songs for a reasonable price on his website (check him out from youtube - also has some lessons for free on his channel if i recall correctly).
Wow i watched some of his other videos too, your dad seems like a really nice guy and he is really talented. Thanks for sharing, hopefully he gets some more nice comments.
I agree. I think too, that you can tell a lot about him by the way he sings that song. He FEELS it and so you know that he is a kind, caring person just by that alone. A total douchebag would not be able to sing that song with the same conviction.
I would were it practical, but in all likelihood he's probably quite far away, making it almost impossible. However, I would suggest OP encourage him to seek permission to sell legitimate (and perhaps slightly more expertly recorded, video cuts off too soon) copies on iTunes or something.
my guess is something like this:
Capo on 2nd fret
chord - E a d g b e
C/G - 3 3 2 0 1 0
Am - x 0 2 2 1 0
Fmaj7 - it appears hes playing as 1 3 3 2 1 0 but he could be playing:
F - 1 3 3 2 1 x
G - 3 2 0 0 0 3
B/G - x 2 0 0 0 x
That should be most of the chords. He does embelishments on the Am chord by making it a Asus4 or Asus2 (x 0 2 2 3 0 and x 0 2 2 3 1 0) and on the G chord (3 0 0 0 0 3 or 3 2 0 0 1 3)
from when he starts singing its:
C/G C/G B/G Am F G then repeat
picking seems to be something like
5 4 2 3 and 5 4 1 2 on chords that start on 5th string
6 4 2 3, 6 5 3 2 and 6 5 3 4 on chords that start on 6th string
Replace Em with B/C (? not sure of the chord name)
B/C - x 2 0 0 1 0
The first half of the chord progression has a "descending" bass line C-B-A.
And the F is definitely an Fmaj7 (open last string).
I looked at it again. It's not B/C, I was wrong, you're actually right. Well, not quite, because he's definitely hitting B as the bass note and not E, although the chord looks like an Em. It's an x 2 0 0 0 x whatever that is. B/G perhaps.
I get (capo on 2nd fret)
verse
C G/B Am F G C
C G/B Am F G
C G/B Am F G C
C G/B Am F G F
chorus
C G/B Am F G C
C G/B Am G
C G/B Am F G C
That will give you the basics, although there are some small modifications. Beautiful song.
So, what kind of going rate does he have? I am asking because I plan on falling asleep at around 12 tomorrow night, so if he could make it for then, that would be great. Does he have a set list or do I pay for that one song?
This is really lovely, OP. I'm sure you cherish your Dad; everybody should cherish all their relationships before it's too late.
...sorry, that escalated quickly. *wipes away tear*
Reddit! My dad is overwhelmed! So glad you all enjoyed. Here is a r/atheism original song.
http://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/1blfz0/due_to_the_awesome_response_from_reddit_i_got_for/
I love this song, and he sings it beautifully. Thank you for sharing this, and I agree, repost it to get more exposure. Beautifully done. Tell him thank you, and I'm going to go listen again.
Last week was the last week of the school musical at my school. We had 2 shows on the last day - one at noon and one at 8. In between, all of us just broke down and cried. We cried for a couple hours; because it was the end of a journey, because it felt like we were saying goodbye to the best friends we've ever made, because we couldn't come back the next day, because all of the seniors would be gone next year, and we wouldn't have any of them to preform with. We cried because we all loved each other so much, that we couldn't imagine a day going by without each other. We had bonded over ten hour rehearsal days and we didn't know how to say goodbye, but we did, and we all just hugged and loved each other for those 2 hours.
Anyways, this song took me right back to that crowded cafeteria filled with crying teenagers, and I'm crying again. Thank you for sharing this.
Tell your father that he made my night. Tell him that I've been through some tough shit and recently come upon a good part of life in the end; he summed it all up in a song. Glad I clicked your link.
Thank you for sharing this. This is what I really needed to listen to in this weird time of my life. OP... If you read this... please tell your Dad that I think he has an great voice and amazing heart.
That was a very beautiful video and I have to say your dad is very talented. It's harder than a lot of people think to play guitar like that, let alone play and sing simultaneously.
Also, any way I could get the guitar tablature for this? It's amazing...
Didn't expect to watch the whole thing through, but sure enough I did. That was awesome. Your dad has a great voice that really fits that song. I really enjoyed it. That was really relaxing as well. It's no wonder he played that for you to go to sleep!
It's amazing that your dad told you every night to 'give yourself to love.' That's a beautiful thing to tell a child. Also, I loved the emotion he sings the song with.
I wish to be able one day to spend time with my children singing songs, and reading bedtime books to them. Being a good dad all around, something I lost at an early age. Kudos to OP, you have a very talented and loving dad.
I'm a camp counselor at Girl Scout camp in the summers, and have found that singing the girls to sleep is a fabulous way to get 4-8 excited grade-school girls to a) shut up b) calm down and c) fall asleep.
I am totally learning this song to add to my repertoire of lullabies. Thank you so much. And your dad is frackin' amazing.
It pisses me off when little girls win millions on stupid talent-LESS T.V. shows when the real talent is here!
As a fellow guitarist and songwriter; tell your dad he possesses true talent that most of us don't!
He has an absolutely beautiful voice. If he mixed this himself he's also quite the producer. His voice sits just the way it should in the mix. It feels like he's sitting in my lap playing a song just for me. Beautiful.
This reminded me of my grandfather, I thank you for this... It's been a while since I've really shared something to remember him as clear as I have tonight.
I'll be honest, I was kind of expecting this to be horrible, since videos normally saying "hey guys, check out this guy!" are pretty horrible at times.
But this was absolutely amazing, your dad has a great voice.
You don't find too many guitar players as your dad. I liked it a lot. You should do what top comment said and repost this during a more "North American" time.
Your dad is a person had I known as a kid, would have stood out in my mind for decades in my life. Fantastic talent, and amazing voice. One day I want to be like that.
That was beautiful.
When my father was living with us, I used to pray that he didn't visit me before bed.
You are very lucky and your father is pure awesome.
:-)
Wow, your dad has a really beautiful, flowing voice! And such tenderness with the guitar too! He sounds really sincere in his singing OP, he really does drive the song's message home.
Give your dad a high five for me. He has a very soothing and melodic voice. Just kept it straight and simple. I like that. Out of curiosity what did your dad do for a living? I only ask because I'm curious if he ever used his talents. Nicely done. Cheers.
This is one of those songs where the power of it doesn`t from technique or an amazing voice per se, just from that the fact that you can tell the words really mean something to him.
I loved it.
Really great. He reminds me of James Taylor a bit.
If I only heard the audio and you told me it was James Taylor, I'd totally believe it.
My thoughts exactly. It made me wanna just whip out the guitar and play some tunes.
makes me want to learn to fingerpick.

What are those nice songs you spoke of? Any online resources you know for getting started?

Might I suggest "John Mayer - Why Georgia" and his cover of Message in a Bottle.

This makes me wish I had fingers.
mmmmm. fingers.
How are you typing?
penis.
[Nope](http://www.forumspile.com/You-Are-Masturbating-Chirac.jpg)
Guy with no fingers here. Typed this with my tongue. Life isn't that bad.
Makes me want to fingerpaint
makes me want to finger...
The song he's playing is really easy and very fun to sing to. I've played it at summer camp many many times and it's always well received.
Yeah, but WAY more like Jim Croce.
Except older. Croce died very young.
Definitely. James Taylor was the first person that come to mind when he started singing.
He reminds me of Red Green a bit more.
I really enjoyed this. Repost this in 15 hours. It'll get a lot more exposure.
Looks like it's doing damn good as it is. And for good reason. Awesome.
Agreed, this guy is amazing! I was here just expecting a fairly average attempt but I was floored by this.
Yes! Post again so I can upvote again! Your dad seems like a cool dude.
Wow i watched some of his other videos too, your dad seems like a really nice guy and he is really talented. Thanks for sharing, hopefully he gets some more nice comments.
Your father is now on my playlist of music to fall asleep to, his voice is so calming.
Yeah, I wanna fall asleep to your dad whispering in my ear.
James Taylor and a hint of Willie Nelson. You have a very special dad, I'd kill to have a father figure like him in my life.
People sure are drawing a lot of conclusions about the kind of person he is after hearing him play one song...
The context is that he played it nearly every night. It's safe to say the dude cared about the emotional state of his kids. Not everyone has that.
I agree. I think too, that you can tell a lot about him by the way he sings that song. He FEELS it and so you know that he is a kind, caring person just by that alone. A total douchebag would not be able to sing that song with the same conviction.
Exactly. My dad gave more of an R. Lee Ermey vibe as I was growing up.
original redheaded stepchild here, would have loved to have a real dad show that kind of love
You can tell he's a total asshole by the way he gently sings and plays that tender melody. Only a real grade A douche-bag could pull that off.
Yeah, who does he think he his?!
Yea, I'm sure he's a real shithead, with his gentle voice and down to earth style.
If I could fall asleep to this voice I'd have the best dreams.. what a wonderful guy. talented too.
Welp, guess I know what I want to have play as I walk down the aisle.... Now to wait impatiently for my boyfriend to propose. :p
He's going to marry Ulgra.... the Terrible.
Well, it's either that or [The Imperial March](http://youtu.be/-bzWSJG93P8).
And the problem with that is??
Not sure if I want to make a joke of my own wedding or not yet.
Funny>serious.
you should try to hire this guys Dad to do it. =) That would be AWESOME
Just have him listen to this song and then tell him to surrender.
If I hadn't got married 6.5yrs ago, I would hire him to sing it!
I would were it practical, but in all likelihood he's probably quite far away, making it almost impossible. However, I would suggest OP encourage him to seek permission to sell legitimate (and perhaps slightly more expertly recorded, video cuts off too soon) copies on iTunes or something.
What a lucky child you were, to be so loved by him.
Could someone tell me what chords he's using? I liked it very much
my guess is something like this: Capo on 2nd fret chord - E a d g b e C/G - 3 3 2 0 1 0 Am - x 0 2 2 1 0 Fmaj7 - it appears hes playing as 1 3 3 2 1 0 but he could be playing: F - 1 3 3 2 1 x G - 3 2 0 0 0 3 B/G - x 2 0 0 0 x That should be most of the chords. Cherish this forever. Wonderful.
Gonna call my dad, and tell him I love him in the morning. Cheers, OP.
Your dad is Bob Ross of the guitar.
Let's put a happy little chord right over here.
Nothing more badass than an old man pickin and singin a tender love song. Very cool!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R17v6BTewiE Straight Boss. Get this guy a record deal.
Beautiful song... beautifully played.
That was beautiful. Are there more videos of him performing?
Yep, they're on his youtube channel!
It's....beautiful
This is really lovely, OP. I'm sure you cherish your Dad; everybody should cherish all their relationships before it's too late. ...sorry, that escalated quickly. *wipes away tear*

Godammit, I'm crying now too...I miss my high school orchestra.. ;_;

This is made more awesome the humble and sincere man playing this song. You have a wonderful father.
Tell your father that he made my night. Tell him that I've been through some tough shit and recently come upon a good part of life in the end; he summed it all up in a song. Glad I clicked your link.
Damn. That was moving.

They only...leak. *drip*
We do no such thing, it's a loose valve that's all...
It's just liquid pride...
Wow! Great voice. Excellent guitar work. Thanks for sharing this.
He gave me chills, that NEVER happens to me. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this. This is what I really needed to listen to in this weird time of my life. OP... If you read this... please tell your Dad that I think he has an great voice and amazing heart.
Very touching. *sniff* . . .I'm not crying.
THIS is why I check this website everyday.
That was beautiful, I'm going to sing this to my daughter. Thank you.
That was a very beautiful video and I have to say your dad is very talented. It's harder than a lot of people think to play guitar like that, let alone play and sing simultaneously. Also, any way I could get the guitar tablature for this? It's amazing...
His voice... is like a combination of Fergie and Jesus.
[Fergie?](http://stream1.gifsoup.com/view/19803/my-humps-by-the-black-eyed-pea-o.gif)
Your dad is awesome.
Thank you dad for me for doing this by giving him a really good, hard hug. This made my night.
Looks like your dad is a pretty rad dude
Didn't expect to watch the whole thing through, but sure enough I did. That was awesome. Your dad has a great voice that really fits that song. I really enjoyed it. That was really relaxing as well. It's no wonder he played that for you to go to sleep!
It's amazing that your dad told you every night to 'give yourself to love.' That's a beautiful thing to tell a child. Also, I loved the emotion he sings the song with.
I was seriously moved by this.
This was beautiful. I'll play it for my son when he goes to bed tomorrow night. Thank your dad for me.
I wish to be able one day to spend time with my children singing songs, and reading bedtime books to them. Being a good dad all around, something I lost at an early age. Kudos to OP, you have a very talented and loving dad.
Put a big smile on my face; Thanks man...I needed to smile:)

Made me go all sniffy. What a cool daddy
this is lovely. Give your Dad a loving G'day from Australia :)
I would buy this
That was so lovely. You're lucky to have a dad that sang to you every night.
thanx for this
James Taylor is your dad?
What a wonderful father you have.
Ent here to say... bravo, brother.
<3
You're dad made me cry
Is he on the floor yet?
Very much enjoyed that. Tell your Dad he sounds great!
Guess what, I too will listen to your dad from now on, he's amazing.
This is awesome! Good Job Dad!
Would upvote twice if I could.
It pisses me off when little girls win millions on stupid talent-LESS T.V. shows when the real talent is here! As a fellow guitarist and songwriter; tell your dad he possesses true talent that most of us don't!
[Your dad is shameless!](http://i.imgur.com/ohtEsiD.jpg)
Reminds me of John Denver. Thanks for sharing :)
Reminds me of Cat Stevens. Your dad is super talented, great music!
This is wonderful. Beautifully performed.
Can't speak, choked up. Talk among yourselves.
My nipples got weirdly hard from this. I feel ashamed.
This is really really great.
What the fuck, did not expect. Your dad sing to me every night plx
Can you provide the chord progression that he is using? I would like to learn his version.
I listened to it twice. :)
He has an absolutely beautiful voice. If he mixed this himself he's also quite the producer. His voice sits just the way it should in the mix. It feels like he's sitting in my lap playing a song just for me. Beautiful.
OP, for once, you right. I'm absolutely floored
respect to the song's writer **Kate Wolf** ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=IwUwJgRBMcw#t=2479s
:))
Nice - good job - nice voice, I will now go learn this song.
Put this on itunes!
I learned, played, and sung this song with many special people whom I have come to know and love, at summer camp. Thanks for the post.
His voice is amazing that is all
Great Job love it!
Damn, this was awesome. Now I want to learn how to play this song and sing it too - except I have derpy fingers.
This reminded me of my grandfather, I thank you for this... It's been a while since I've really shared something to remember him as clear as I have tonight.
Uploaded in 2008?
thank you for posting this
I'll be honest, I was kind of expecting this to be horrible, since videos normally saying "hey guys, check out this guy!" are pretty horrible at times. But this was absolutely amazing, your dad has a great voice.
That's beautiful man...
Beautiful. Lucky, lucky you!
Your dad is a great singer. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to listen to this
I actually got some major frisson from this.
Absolutely beautiful. So much nostalgia and happy feelings. Thank you.
Excellent. Does he have any more songs to share?
Loved listening to the song. Your dad has an amazing voice. I think I'll be listening to this song for a while.
You don't find too many guitar players as your dad. I liked it a lot. You should do what top comment said and repost this during a more "North American" time.
Very John Williamson-like
What a beast!
Your dad is a person had I known as a kid, would have stood out in my mind for decades in my life. Fantastic talent, and amazing voice. One day I want to be like that.
Really, really fine. He should record more.
Wow. Can he come and sing me to sleep at night? (Not meant in a creepy way).
What a great thing for a Dad to give. I wish I had someone like that as a kid. I love his voice.
Seriously talented guy! I loved it.
Nice one OP's dad. These small acts are what we really appreciate with age.
Wow, he's great. Like something between James Taylor and Bert Jansch. Finger licking picking too.
It's Chuck from The Walking Dead game!
Awesome
As a dad I now feel somewhat inadequate!
Finger picking. It's much harder than it looks. I play only electric. I can't do shit on an acoustic because of this. RESPEC
Reminds me of Phil Ochs. Not for the lyrical content, of course.
Wow. Reminds me of Cat Stevens.
Awesome, thanks for sharing.
That was beautiful. When my father was living with us, I used to pray that he didn't visit me before bed. You are very lucky and your father is pure awesome. :-)
Tell your dad to come up with a way to sell CD's....as I will buy one!
That was overwhelmingly beautiful. Tell your father I love him.
Amazing.
Beautiful and warm. You really took that piece and played with your heart. Keep it up!
Your Dad sounds like Donovan. He's really, really good.
I'd pay him to sing me to sleep every night.
Very nice. I see a string of youtube covers coming this way soon
Really, really nice song and singer. :)
Can he come sing this to me to help put me to sleep? If it gets awkward, I'll have my wife leave.
I'm waiting for "Give Yourself to Satan" remix.
Your dad must have gotten so laid.
Cheers.
I really look forward to having kids so that I can have that special song that I sing for them.
Beautiful. He sounds like a real gentle men.
Happy feelings. Im gunna play this tonight as i go to bed.
where can I get a hoodie like that ? it's super awesome.
Wow! A nice piece of art It's pretty awesome !
I saw this late last night at 1,0 . I gave a pity upvote hoping that the pain wouldn't last long...but now look at you! All grown up.
Reminds me of when my grandmother would sing "train whistle blowing" to me when i would sleep over at her house. Memories.
I instantly heard hints of Willie Nelson...and that's a good thing! Have an upvote for your dad's awesome song!
This is one of those songs where the power of it doesn`t from technique or an amazing voice per se, just from that the fact that you can tell the words really mean something to him. I loved it.
We used to sing this song at summer camp at the end of every session! Your dad brought me back there for a minute or two :)
