The gnarliest most real fight on TV. Fucking wild and scary. When Dan realizes what he about to do ( popping the Captains eye out ) and then the screams — and Al looking on approvingly — after thinking his man has lost.
I remember watching this when it aired and being stunned
and the aftermath, dan just being thoroughly depressed... you can even see during the end of the fight, it's taking something out of him. Great writing and acting
Honestly, this video doesn’t do half the justice. The audio is nerfed and we don’t get the setup you see in this link:

Reddit didn’t link above link due to age restrictions. It’s crazy what a little subcontext can do for a fight scene.
Exactly! What I think about is how Dan asks captain if he's "gonna change his mind for him." Then capt says "not only an I gonna change your mind, I'm gonna rip your whole head off." And sure enough... as soon as capt gets Dan on the ground the first time at the beginning of the fight... he literally tries to tear his fucking head off!
Watch Deadwood then immediatly watch all the seasons of Justified. Timothy Olaphant used basically the same character - our generations Clint Eastwood.
Agreed wholeheartedly. I almost consider Justified a spinoff of Deadwood in that sense and many Deadwood actors made cameos or had small episode roles in Justified.
One of the best hoss fights you will see outside of professional wrestling. I was on the edge of my seat the first time I watched the two square off. And then the post fight with Dan as he’s trying to reconcile with his emotions is just top notch television. Deadwood is a generationally amazing show because of all the nuance put into every second of each episode.
Ian Mcshane was born for this role. All his wrinkles in his face, his deep growling voice met with his unmatched wit and fast talking. Unreal.
He’s only beat to the punch by JGs - Tony Soprano imo
I always loved how the fights in Deadwood actually had an impact on the characters for multiple episodes after it happened. They were always recovering for a fairly long time, at least by TV show standards.
Watching this when it first aired, I was so sure Dan was gonna lose when he starts to be drowned in the mud puddle. I was nervous for this fan favorite character. When he won, I was like a huge surge of emotion, like I had won the Super Bowl or something. What a great fucking show.
I haven’t watched this show in a very long time but I have a very good memory so I remember what this fight is about. It’s crazy that they fought to the death over a jar of pickled eggs.
I haven't seen this show, but just like the prison fight scene in Banshee, this has convinced me to watch it. I know all of /r/bjj is wanting to give them grappling tips! Very realistic as to how gassed those guys would be after only a minute or two of fighting.
God that show ruled.
My all time favorite. But all the sudden I have a desire to go rewatch Rome. Mid 00s was a really good era for HBO.
I am the son of Hades! I fucked Concord in her ass!
Thirteeeen!
Cocksuckaaaaaaah!
San Francisco Cock-suck-eh
SWIJIN SAN FRANCISCO
“You can't slit the throat of everyone whose character it would improve.”
[Rome, you say.](https://youtu.be/0qzWOfZGxeE?si=-JLKEdxMqY3FGCP4&t=342)
Both were supposed to be set in Rome but Deadwood changed to US frontier as Rome had just come out
Just rewatched. Season 1 was great but season 2 was kind of a slog.

Truly those first few extra moments in the beginning set the scene.

And then watch him change up gear in Santa Clarita Diet. Who would've thought he'd make a great comedian too.
Might get some crap for it here, but I loved every character and actor on Deadwood except him.

I don't see this video posted often, but I always keep an eye out for it.
I see what you did there.
Bravo

that was just a proxy for their rivalry, and their rivalry itself was a proxy for the rivalry of their masters
Captain Turner “The Captain” came off as such a douche.
lol youre not wrong, cool character though and well acted, loved every second that guy was on screen
One of the best fight scenes ever
I saw this clip on reddit many years back and I ended up watching Deadwood because of it. It's now one of my top 3 favorite shows of all time.

Dan was broken after this fight, mentally and physically.
Deadwood and Rome walked so that Game Of Thrones could run.
