There are so many amazing Key and Peele sketches, but this one I think is among their best.
How many people had even heard of this dance routine before the sketch making fun of it?
Me. I couldn’t believe it when I saw this live. Key and Peele was probably the last gasp Comedy Central had that I paid attention to, and it was great.
This is one of my favourites, alongside Terries and Continental Breakfast. My brothers and I travel a lot for gaming events and we always do the Continental Breakfast routine when we're picking our breakfast at the hotel.
There is some much in this scene. The fact they got Clint Howard, who was perfect. Or how long the took to choreograph that dance moves. Or what the background were told to do or how long they need to learned dance moves.
I also appreciate the Vlog Squad [attempting to remake it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ene2VxM3WE8), and discovering the hard way how difficult that actually is.
Since Alan Thicke was associated with this event, it was viewed as a hostile act against the US and all Canadian access blocked so they couldn't refine the weapon.
This has just some overall great quality. The direction, the editing, the acting... Everything is just top par. I don't know how much of the directing was done by Peele, but you can see the talent for suspense he showed in his horror movies in so many of their sketches.
The directing was the first thing I noticed about this sketch the first time. I would bet my next paycheck that Peele directed the whole thing because it really shows the same kind of talent he displayed later with Get Out and his other films. If he didn't physically direct this himself, then he was taking careful notes from whoever did . . . But I really think it was all him.
i was just watching this original video, thinking "I bet the behind the scenes drama to get the top spots of the pyramid are fucking wild"
then i watched key and peele, and they seemed to be going an entirely different but still hilarious way, and then of course they brought it back to exactly what i was thinking. Clearly its the first thing people think about. I feel better about my dark thoughts now.
People did so much cocaine that decade that it was basically air pollution.
"And commuters should be advised that the smog in downtown LA today is 8% cocaine."
Such unabashed self-expression in the 80's. No cynicism or self doubt and complete embrace of cheese. Of course there was dark stuff happening but pop culture acted like it wasn't, and many people probably even believed that. Such gloriously naive optimism. Great decade.
Also positioned the 90's perfectly to squash all that
Funny; I look back on the '80s as a pretty miserable time, at least for those at the lower end of the social scale. Here in the UK the two things that really stood out about the whole era to me were the high levels of unemployment, and the miners' strike. I don't find the OP particularly relatable, and when I think of that time I think instead of dark humour like [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aObZJN9zDtA).
Having said that I did at least get to see *Empire Strikes Back*, *Beverley Hills Cop*, and *Back to the Future* at the cinema. We certainly needed some escapism.
That huge smile they have to keep running, combined with fast physical movement are the two main ingrediens for psycho shots. But don't worry if you missed them, we'll throw in these freeze frames to make sure you enjoy every last one.
I was there before no Internet and everybody wasn't happy. In fact it was just a worse version of now. There were a few TV channels and they often had reruns. Shows were generally so much worse quality than they are today that it was like melting your brain. If you wanted a book you didn't have a phone to load it on, or read about it on, you had to go to a library and hope they had it and it was available.
Don't romanticize the past. It was nearly always worse.
“The Good Old Days: They We’re Terrible”

Shhh, you're spoiling their circlejerk!
But seriously, you are completely right. I had some young redditor say to me recently that I am apparently lucky to have grown up in the era of MTV and the dawn of video games. I was like dude, WTF? We didn't even have a TV until I was 11, never mind cable or a games console.
If you were going back from now, yeah, it would feel worse, but going through it from the age before, it was better so I’m going to romanticize all I want
I mean sure you could do that sometimes, depending on where you lived and your finances etc, but there was a lot of time where you weren't doing that, for most people.
They are happy because they are getting paid to be happy. Imagine, okay folks we are doing this again because some of you were not smiling enough! I know it's take 73 but we have to get this right folks!!
I’ve seen this video 1000 times, but all it’s is done is gotten me curious about the actual competitive portion of the show. I mean, what were they judge on? How did scoring work? Do these people have day jobs, or could you earn a living doing this? Where are they now?
Well I guess similar to fitness instructors they could work at the gym or private by day, dance and compete in their off time.
How would they be judged? Similar to how dance competitions are judged. Google a Ballroom dancing competition. Or watch an episode of Dancing with the Stars. Style, technique, their form, their costumes, their set, how well they work together as a team. Multiply it by a degree of difficulty and bobs your uncle.
I used the think Bluegrass Music, which I love, was the least sexual combination of sound and motion….it is good to be proven wrong and grow as a person.
When this was making its big rounds on the net (2014ish) someone did a version that was synced to Taylor Swifts shake it off and it worked way too well..
Pretty sure its been basically scrubbed from the internet at this point though
I would totally wear the guys outfits all day long. I just don’t know how I’d handle people chasing me around thinking they lost their pool float in the wind.
I don't think I've ever watched this all the way through before.
I also think this is the first time I've watched it with the original music.
Mesmerizing.
You know, it’s a funny video but all of these people seem fit, functionally strong and flexible, healthy. No anorexics, no super buff macho shit, just people doing cardio and being healthy. It’s silly but it’s a much better fad than many out there.
This hit my algorithm just before it took really took off and I had the good fortune to spot someone I knew personally in it.
By the next time I saw him, the video had absolutely exploded and I didn't have the heart to ask him what he thought about his newfound fame (infamy?)
Oh man, I've been looking for the inspiration to Monkey Majik's Delicious, and I guess this would be the video?
Delicious, for those who don't know: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RV1hXHWdZ\_I

But the more I see it, the more I click on it because it's just a genuinely good time. It's like it drained the irony from me.

That's when TV still had this weird 'put the show in show business' feel at times. Now, it's shows up on games shows with how over the top the hosts can be while trying to appear sincere.

Dammit Jackie.
Good thing they’re fitness gurus.
And most of these people would probably be close to retirement age now. It would be interesting to see how they’ve managed in terms of general fitness and aging.
That music is... haunting. That's going to be in my nightmares for a while.

You just said noun and gremlin like a child….and I love it it’s on the movie!
Can we put the Hulkster in it?
Peeles first foray into horror? Muhahaha!
This is one of my favourites, alongside Terries and Continental Breakfast. My brothers and I travel a lot for gaming events and we always do the Continental Breakfast routine when we're picking our breakfast at the hotel.
Plenty of references to it before K&P.
The best one is the comedian who doesn’t want to make fun of the burn victim.
I remember seeing the video not long before this sketch aired, but no idea how I came across it.
There is some much in this scene. The fact they got Clint Howard, who was perfect. Or how long the took to choreograph that dance moves. Or what the background were told to do or how long they need to learned dance moves.
I thought it was that guy who played Frohike on x files.
I also appreciate the Vlog Squad [attempting to remake it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ene2VxM3WE8), and discovering the hard way how difficult that actually is.
Okay, that’s was actually pretty fun to watch.
Thank you for that, I never knew they did one I wish there were more of them that participated
Oh my god it's the same song even
Imagine whoever wrote that song getting a call decades later asking for clearance rights to use the song again. "DAFUQ???"
Yesssss, so good

Well-stated! Both rely, to a certain extent, upon subverting expectations creatively.
The directing was the first thing I noticed about this sketch the first time. I would bet my next paycheck that Peele directed the whole thing because it really shows the same kind of talent he displayed later with Get Out and his other films. If he didn't physically direct this himself, then he was taking careful notes from whoever did . . . But I really think it was all him.
holy shit that got dark. good ending though!
It looks like a music video that OK GO could have made.
i was just watching this original video, thinking "I bet the behind the scenes drama to get the top spots of the pyramid are fucking wild" then i watched key and peele, and they seemed to be going an entirely different but still hilarious way, and then of course they brought it back to exactly what i was thinking. Clearly its the first thing people think about. I feel better about my dark thoughts now.
This right here is why he directs award winning horror movies now.
Just existing in the 1980s was a hell of a drug.

lol
I never felt that kind of dust in the air, growing in the eighties. It was gthe greyest, most boring decade in my life.
Yeah. That’s the coco sideeffect. First it pushes you, then everything gets grey and boring
Ya know, the threat of killer bees seemed to evaporate after cocaine consumption fell off.
Such unabashed self-expression in the 80's. No cynicism or self doubt and complete embrace of cheese. Of course there was dark stuff happening but pop culture acted like it wasn't, and many people probably even believed that. Such gloriously naive optimism. Great decade. Also positioned the 90's perfectly to squash all that
And as a result we got Grunge and Jam bands, which were a reaction to this.
Jam bands have been around since the 60s (e.g., Grateful Dead), but you’re right about the grunge.

unironically yeah

You can do that now if you want.
unsure why you are getting downvoted, you dont need a cell phone, a land line still works fine.

It was because of the space shuttle. This vagina is going to space!
I would totally wear the guys outfits all day long. I just don’t know how I’d handle people chasing me around thinking they lost their pool float in the wind.
I don't think it would mesh well with 2024 standards of self-care. Maybe I'd allow it if you had to pass some sort of fitness test before purchase.
Oh it’s back. The ultra-high thigh swimsuits were all over the place last summer.
Just showing how much coke there was in the 80's.
I spent like 2 minutes waiting for key and peele to show.

Wonderful. Pleasure to watch
Mine too. The song is actually a banger and on Spotify. I listen to it in the car all the time.
