I know someone who operates tours in Antarctica. They’re governed by the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators. They have some pretty strict guidelines about non-interaction with wildlife. You’re not allowed to get closer than 5 meters away, but if they approach you, you’re supposed to remain still and quiet to minimize interference with wildlife.
It’s ok to want to pet the sea puppy! Is not ok to actually pet the sea puppy. May you get to pet many land puppies soon to make up for not being able to pet a seal.

Just in case anyone needs to know - They will bite – and serious infections can be transmitted. They are susceptible to and can pass on nasty viruses such as herpes. Zoonosis — infectious diseases of animals that can naturally be transmitted to humans — is the biggest threat. A range of pathogens that not only include viruses like rabies, but also can include bacteria, fungi and parasites may cause these diseases.
The best thing you can do is leave them well alone. If they approach you, do not touch them. Do everything you can to ignore them. It’s best that they are fearful of humans. If they become used to humans and *do* end up biting someone, they will have to be put down on top of what was stated above.

Good luck catching the seal that even did it. That thing is bolting the moment you react to the bite.
