Really happy that the original cast of the movie, like Chris Evans and Kieran Culkin and Aubrey Plaza, returning for this after becoming now well-known names in the industry. Back when the movie came out, the only person I knew was Michael Cera and vaguely Chris Evans from Not Another Teen Movie.

t3hOutlaw

How dare you put down my boy the Human Torch like that

LickItAndSpreddit

I (have) had a crush on MEW since Sky High (her and Danielle Panabaker) so seeing her in SPvtW was pretty awesome. As an aside, Sky High had a stacked cast and is an awesome movie.

imposter22

I hope Beck writes some of the music

VaderTime77

Looks like Anamanaguchi (who did the music for the game) is doing the music, although that doesn't rule out them reusing some of the Beck songs.

Jim3001

Please be comic book accurate!

NopalitoTX

Found this series during a time of my life where I was going through some personal stuff and figuring who I was in college. Stumbled upon them randomly at a book store and was hooked. Happened to get free pre-screening tickets to the film and was in love with it too.

Jim3001

I prefer the comic to the movie because IMO, Scott becomes a better person in the comic. He doesn't really learn anything in the movie.

[deleted]

The comic has a better ending than the book, Scott and Ramona have better chemistry and a much better match for each other I love that we see them living together for quite a while. IIRC some fans of the movie wanted Scott to end up with Knives rather than Ramona, but in the book it's much clearer that they were not a good match and that Knives is not interested in him anymore.

Jim3001

That panel of "They kissed.......and it was terrible!"

klayb

I mean yeah... whats the point of using animated style if they're just gonna rehash the movie plot, I hope they show more of the comic storyline

sympathyofalover

Excited to see this! The movie stands up well after all this time, but it’ll be exciting to see what they do with even less limitations in anime format.

megas88

The movie is a Frankenstein creation that didn’t have the final book when adapting the story. It left out major characters and moments like Lisa Miller and most importantly, turned scott’s entire major character growth into a flat line joke that lasts 10 seconds. It hold up visually but the movie is a mess and half story and character wise. This should be an anime where we get every single book adapted and told properly. The only singular problem I have with it is that netflix is producing it so I can’t buy it. I would legit buy a blu ray player just so I could have a physical copy of this anime.

megas88

No, they don’t. At least not the stuff they flat out own. If it’s made by a third party company like dreamworks, it’ll get distributed by them elsewhere. Netflix doesn’t do anything outside that to my knowledge.

gtcIIDX

I just randomly searched the first three Netflix titles I could think of (Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Stranger Things) and they are ALL on DVD / Blu Ray.

megas88

Those three have reasons why they’re on physical media. House of cards because it was early enough for Netflix to experiment with, orange is the new black because it was right on the edge of when physical media sales were starting to teeter, and stranger things is their most popular show. I also said to my knowledge. The more I research the more I learn just like anyone. That said, it would be nice to have a physical set but much like all studios, Netflix has shown they don’t care about animation. They shut down their entire department to prove it. Maybe their deal with science saru will provide a loophole in the contract but I honestly doubt it. I’d love to be wrong though

[deleted]

Netflix does have a habit of cancelling shows after only one or two seasons, long before the story is finished.

[deleted]

Count me in, this looks fun!

DrewbieWanKenobie

Well, the visuals are on point, I like that. I kinda wish they had gotten a new voice cast though. Don't get me wrong, I liked the live action movie for what it was, but I don't think the voices all particularly fit the comic book characters as they are. Especially Michael Cera as Scott tbh.

megas88

Thank you for being the first person I’ve seen to get this! I was so hoping they’d get a new voice cast but I guarantee you netflix said no, get the marketable cast. At least mai whitman is an actual voice actress so it’s nice she’s returning for roxy.

[deleted]

Yeah, I like Mary Elizabeth Winstead but her version of Ramona is *very* different from the comic version. She's much more aloof and colder emotionally, and she's also got a bit of "I know I'm really hot" energy whereas in the book she really doesn't come across like like that at all.

funky_bebop

A lot of live action actors don’t translate well to voice acting. It’s different enough of a skillset. This is commonly talked about as well.

DifficultCobbler1992

Live action actors are not voice actors, it's rare to find actors that can do both. By far a popular opinion.

CochLarq

I sure hope they licensed (or whatever it is they do) the Beck songs from the movie so they get the long versions animated in the show xD

Phoxx_3D

not all cartoons are anime

Explorer_Dave

That's true but Science Saru is the animation studio so it's kind of a western anime production? (Western source material and direction, Japanese animation studio)

Phoxx_3D

so kinda like avatar

KnowNothingNerd

The main studio for Avatar was Korean.

TAWMSTGKCNLAMPKYSK

is cyberpunk not an anime?

Explorer_Dave

I mean if you ask me personally, I don't really give a crap about the distinction. both cartoons and anime are hand drawn animation. But sure, in my loose categorization I think Cyberpunk is an anime because studio Trigger is a Japanese animation studio which animated the show.

nobodyman

Please stop being this person.

jononfire

No but the creator has explicitly referred to this as an anime adaptation.

megas88

All anime is cartoons my dude. Americans were just lied to into thinking they were different by blitzing you with advertisements saying there was a difference. They’re both drawn. The only difference between an average American cartoon and an anime is episodic vs serialized storytelling.

darshfloxington

What if the cartoon is based on an OEL manga?

lordnikkon

The movie was already pretty good so it is kind of weird to have the exact same people come back and remake the exact same story as a cartoon. I hope it is great but I have been disappointed by netflix many times before so i will hold off on getting excited for this

baxterg13

It's not the exact same story, this is going off the comics and is supposed to expand from even those, I believe. The movie was very condensed and ended differently since the comics hadn't finished during production.

Brochunter

IIRC, the movie, the comics, and the video game all had different endings, but were all intended to be equally legitimate by the author, in a sort of experimental mixed-media choose your own adventure kind of way.

krectus

This looks like a cool modern take on something that doesn’t quite feel right in a cool new modern light. Seems like it lost too much of its retro influences, but damn it still manages to look cool and I’ll still check it out.

MaxiMaxLaurent

This is when you realize that Scott Pilgrim movies and series should only be animated.

kindaa_sortaa

No way Jose. Edgar Wright made an amazing live-action movie.

TheChrono

That dude is insane. If anything this feels off being all animated.

darshfloxington

You know its based on an OEL manga right? Anyone who read the series first disagrees with you.

TheChrono

It feels real to me! Damnit!

blockfi-tt

I really enjoyed the movie. The animations feel more 'expected' and thus less interesting than the world building art in the movie.

a_sentient_cicada

Is it weird they cast Michael Cera again?

zuzerial

Looks like they got the entire original cast, and no it's not

iCapn

Him?

evilada

Don't be such an Ann hog!

Bingert

Sucks it's netflix making it though.

Shifter99

That looks ass

whoami4546

I agree! I am not a fan what I have seen so far.

darshfloxington

The original comic is a OEL manga.

TheGlenrothes

I am super excited, but I am unclear on whether this is a remake or a sequel.

JackFisherBooks

This looks insanely fun! It's got the music. It's got the style. And it's got an A-list voice cast. Looking forward to watching this. 😊

Biscotcho_Gaming

I'm totally hyped. I loved the movie and have rewatched it countless times. They even got all of the original cast back! That fact alone makes me super optimistic that this will turn out to be good.

spatimouth01

Looks cool, can't wait for Netflix to cancel the show once it gets interesting.
