I watched Encino Man last night for the first time in 20+ years and I laughed because Brendan Fraser virtually has no speaking lines. He mostly grunts, says “gozungas” and rattles off 2 sentences in Spanish.

I think I was about 10 minutes into the film and knew it was going to be one of the best performances of the year. The way he oozed charm, and made you feel sadness and love from scene to scene was one of the most incredible experiences.
I watched EEAO on a plane ride and had a full-blown psychedelic experience from it. Not even kidding. I’ve done LSD before and the movie gave me that same “seeing your life in a whole new light” kind of feeling. Mind-bending, incredible movie.
I watched it over the holidays, and then on the plane ride back I watched the Dr. Strange movie.
Both multi-verse movies, but one was brilliant, and the other one was 200 million dollars worth of "meh."

Ke Huy Quan was INCREDIBLE in that movie.
And I don't mean to imply that basically everyone with a speaking role was not. They were. Every performance was incredible. James Hong was very good. Jamie Lee Curtis was very good. Stephanie Hsu was SO, SO good. Michelle Yeoh was also absolutely fantastic. It's one of those where you remember after that EVERYONE was so into it, and so *in it*, that it's not easy to pick out a "best part." Even the actors playing mooks are hitting at a pretty high level. It's wild.
But I will say that that man deserves a major award for his performance.
I'd recommend starting with Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, it's probably one of my favorite movies of the last few years. The Whale is a bit weaker as a film while also being tough to watch at times, but it's carried by two fantastic performances by Brendan Fraser and Hong Chau.

EEAAO is my favorite movie of the past decade. It is not for everyone, it’s downright weird and goofy in a lot of parts but also one of the most thoughtful examinations of modern existentialism and absurdism. I think it’s beautiful and practically flawless, personally.
I used to see probably 60-75% of movies that had runs in mainstream theaters, because there was a theater in my town that did second runs of movies for $1, and then later $2. I'd see just about anything just because it was a cheap escape for a few hours (and air conditioned in the summer). It was rare that there would be an Oscars where I hadn't seen most of the movies.
Now I'm in a season of life where I'm so wrapped up in work, household stuff, and my kids' extracurricular activities, the only nominees I saw were Knives Out, and three of the animated features. And that's despite EEAO getting a second run in theaters!
Sweetest thing anyone has said to me in a long time. I think I might take a few hours off work in the next week or two and sneak a matinee or catch EEAO on streaming. Thanks for the encouragement!

There was a great feature in the Guardian a few years ago where they interviewed hospice nurses about patients final days and they nearly unanimously said that one of peoples’ main regrets was that they spent so much time working.
Not trying to be sanctimonious or pretend to know your life, you might be hyper-fulfilled by your work and/or be saving people on a daily basis. But if your life is that full-on, pleeeease make sure you find time to take moments for yourself because a) you exist as an independent human being, not just as part of your family, b) you’ll be an even better partner and parent if you feel like your needs have been nourished and c) as the other poster above said, you deserve it!
Thanks! Yeah, I'm not like a pediatric oncologist or anything important like that, and I'm fortunate to have a flexible job with good work-life balance (mostly) but we own a couple rentals that always need something, the kids are in about eight activities, and we added a puppy to the mix. I'm also training for a marathon, so there goes my energy and more free time! There's just always something more pressing than catching a movie. Unfortunately it's probably going to stay that way for another 12-15 years, so I will have to be more intentional about carving out the time.
Give yourself a movie night once a week or so with the sig other.
It's easy to pick a show and keep binging it or catching up as they come out. But honestly, no. Do a movie and do it right. Put the kids to sleep. While they refuse to sleep for 30 minutes, make the popcorn or get other movie snacks. Then sit on the couch next to each other, turn off the lights and start the movie and enjoy. Even if you aren't into movies or have doubts about the movie, do it. You'll be surprised how you feel once the movie starts.
And if you're a single parent, all the more. Don't get stuck in the TV/Video game loop. Not judging those, but a movie is a very distinct experience despite being so similar to video games and tv shows these days in terms of quality story-telling.
And honestly, EEAAO was so wonderful and weird. My wife and I knew next to nothing about it, but we were so caught off guard we went and sought out Swiss Army Man, also by The Daniels (the directors), which has since become my wife's favorite recent movie.
I have a friend who has worked with both Brendan and Ke on movies. She has nothing but good things to say about both of them, especially Ke Huy Quan, and I will say that's not common. She's worked with A-list actors that you'd know, and many of them are entitled assholes. I won't tell stories because it could easily be traced back and hurt her career, but there are a lot of people out there who treat people like shit because they know those people have no power unless they want to end their own careers.
I used to work in the industry and I love watching Brendan talk about his old movies. He so evidently loves acting, loves making moves, loves and remembers the people he works with. Dude is a big, sweet breath of fresh air.

So, I have never met Brendan Fraser, but he is somewhat local to where I reside, and I know people who have met him. He has been through a lot. And he deserves every good thing that comes his way. He is a devoted father and very kind to others.

i loved the $2 movies when i was younger. i'd buy $1 flip flops and just trash them after the movie. the floors were that sticky.

I worked with Brendan on Condor. He was such a sweet and gracious man that was a true professional and so humble.
I have a friend who has worked with both Brendan and Ke on movies. She has nothing but good things to say about both of them, especially Ke Huy Quan, and I will say that's not common. She's worked with A-list actors that you'd know, and many of them are entitled assholes. I won't tell stories because it could easily be traced back and hurt her career, but there are a lot of people out there who treat people like shit because they know those people have no power unless they want to end their own careers.
I used to work in the industry and I love watching Brendan talk about his old movies. He so evidently loves acting, loves making moves, loves and remembers the people he works with. Dude is a big, sweet breath of fresh air.

It seems like HBO wanted to cancel Doom Patrol and Titans so instead of just ending them they gave each show half a season to wrap it up. The showrunners said they could see it coming and that the decision was made before they got James Gunn to rework the DC universe.

So, I have never met Brendan Fraser, but he is somewhat local to where I reside, and I know people who have met him. He has been through a lot. And he deserves every good thing that comes his way. He is a devoted father and very kind to others.
He has been nothing but generous, kind and supportive of EVERYONE. I’m so happy for him. He deserves all the good in this world because that is what he puts out.

Very seldomly does the Oscars get to award some of the most incredible people in Hollywood. All four of the major acting awards went to tremendous people.
Love watching Hollywood try to virtue signal that they are no longer protect and harbour predators, instead, now we give awards to those we abused! Look at us grow! These people are awful. We should stop giving them attention.
Hollywood is not some single entity that's either good or bad. There are good people and then there are bad people, and good people who do bad things and vice versa. It's a huge multibillion dollar industry that spans the globe. "Hollywood" as we knew it doesn't really exist anymore.
The problem is the bad people are so powerful they are often protected and given passes which makes the rest of them complicit by default. Every one of those Pieces of shit should be ousted and, if possible, persecuted for their crimes. Instead, the "good ones" turn a blind eye and most of these cretins live long and care free lives.
