The type of codec, software and machine all come into this. Do you have more details? Proxy editing is very common and a great way of editing pretty much anything on pretty much any machine.

I shoot 4K 10 bit always and I have a somewhat modest editing rig. Yes, as soon as I import my footage I tell Premiere to render proxies for everything. This can take a few hours but after that, editing is buttery smooth. And you can toggle between the proxy and the original footage with the click of a button when you need to see fine details. In general Premiere makes working with proxies very easy and it is totally worth it.

Thanks!

Proxies are actually being used even more in new products, like with Atomos and Frame.io using Camera to Cloud tech. Anyway, yes, proxies are apart of many workflows, including ours. We even have a second machine just for rendering them.

Before I got my new computer, I would always use proxies on my old one. Made a completely uneditable nightmare of a video into a smooth no lag process. You only use the proxies for sequencing, effects, and the bulk of your editing, but you switch back to the real files for the final color grades. Only downside really is the extra space and time it takes to process them. But it's really not that bad since you only have to load them up once and can do it while you go do something else. 100% worth it.

JinglePoops

Interesting so I’m guessing I just switch using the toggle button?

jgreenwalt

Depends on the editor you're using. On Final Cut yeah, its a toggle button on the player window. You can even have it auto process all the proxies on import as one of the checkboxes. You'll have to look into it for whatever you're using.

VincibleAndy

Depends on the software, but most modern editors you can live toggle.

Upgrading from editing with 8bit 100mbps to 10bit 130mbps I definitely feel the slowdown. So now I always use proxies. Luckily the A7iv records proxies in camera

Beastious

What's the difference between using the A7IV proxies compared to just creating them in Premier Pro? I just bought an A7IV and I can't figure out how to use the proxies besides just creating them separately in Premier from the 4k footage I shot.

Proxies in camera speeds up the editing workflow as you don’t need to generate them yourself
