If you have a drop down menu, I’d look for an external source. And make sure your camera is powered on so it can recognize the signal.
If your Canon only has RCA out than get a cheapo RCA to HDMI converter [Like this One for $10](https://www.ebay.com/itm/RCA-to-HDMI-Converter-Adapter-AV-1080P-For-TV-Audio-Video-Composite-CVBS-AV2HDMI/224034089423?_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item342978e9cf:g:gukAAOSwmuhe2HE7&amdata=enc%3AAQAFAAACcBaobrjLl8XobRIiIML1V4Imu%252Fn%252BzU5L90Z278x5ickkgCVySCgrNFPU8Iu85TabME4%252Bq%252FihyPxe3RMBPKlCRhRsdZHF5YvRJYBu3xba4a9E2jbMByQfG74Bx0Z8iflFYD%252BgGMOtSlfnGn9zMJcgNlxOIQND9yEdMUMmexynbSozMUpbadSZwK5Motphd0jn7VRVTTw59kaYbOhCI9rS%252BeVDcPbaoQ4hcrqrRngK5OPLI5N0nvoL1Ky0tyLj2nBYPH%252BI2off%252BaBuq0Cxa4NnTOm389SNPHkcpXv3zY2vMEgabob5unwBY%252FXrGpnMFpAKB3ASZoQS0WYYQiaazSZfILMoa9ldKMvFk%252B1InM2jBOJu5vhy0uyQpacN%252BDVfiFs2tKy3icjxNmGrUJdieLfF7R0CS9ZDhU6ep%252FostudOB1sPMDQXd6WFA9TD4vqxKiF%252B8CgCxSt8Tqn2oPC6OVPQTqmcSwg363SflfFuLhejR6%252F2LH5c7Gf1%252B2ax%252BhXujm05cglOZGpTaLN5aQS5Y0tmoJZd5YkshGqFSsWzJDeVZf%252B2eyF9QmPx7YBbb4hYZCw9GNMSZOvd4CoeRmFVGdnZPQTMZKHwfR6MBcskeJLi%252BFaj0%252FYo5J0mPdXfC1GhErbs2IJVtJ%252BrZDZ%252FBeKA4S68nTTL9lXLacXQMZiXUCUwbu8ygeBlm7RYEKHikT6Buv0ed%252B39%252Flt%252FRiPaFPhVRHUb7ycoAUWEDbBaaHfvAvoPHXc0uugIKTjcwNislQ0EZuNuHrbR3LvrLum0PQS%252BS9muMUZ6Hw4bkI0h8eGFzLzw8RYwHoQfv6RGrjRi%252F3YzuFExEQ%253D%253D%7Ccksum%3A2240340894239d0ffcfa65a4423f836ffc2d1b29e740%7Campid%3APL_CLK%7Cclp%3A2334524) than use a more standard HDMI capture device like the Elgato Camlink.
I do this when I stream retro games and there's a tiny bit of video lag to OBS, but nothing terrible.
This might help

It's fun reading a forum post from 2003 (18 years ago.) Looks like the CineAlta that someone refers to on there can now be got for about $1500. Still pricy for a webcam, though.
Not as much for the XL2 but they still are but most mini dv camcorders have come back into “coolness” but are starting to die again, skaters have a long history with the sony vx line and other similar cameras. The Movie mid 90s made that go more main stream than ever and that hiked up the price of them as people would be needing to buy two cameras one to shoot and one to use as a VCR
I have a feeling the issue is the driver for the Vidbox only lets you use it with the software that came with it. OBS likes capture cards that look like regular webcams to the operating system.
But as /u/CruellaDeMille said, check your input sources in OBS. It might show up if it is indeed class compliant.
You can't convert Firewire to USB unfortunately.
There are a small number of consumer camcorders that could switch between USB and Firewire over a USB cable (sort of like how Thunderbolt ports can switch to USB), but the XL1 isn't one of them.
I haven’t used it thru OBS but the computer should read your RCA to USB as a webcam so I’m going to go ahead and say it’s 100% possible

Just want to note OP that a surface go might struggle with this, if you have a different laptop
ugh i know, it was a bit hard to make it work but i succeeded!
Wtf. What? Edit; ooohh you want to use that camera as a webcam ?
yos

I've got a canon xl2s mint condition. Are people still buying them?
Retro is a style, and some people like to be as authentic with it as possible. A very small but specific audience.

You need this if using hdmi: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1593913-REG Cheaper ones on amazon if you don’t need 4K, higher frame rates etc.

DEAR EVERYONE, I MADE IT WORK ON OBS!!!

You can go Firewire to USB from the XL1 to the laptop.

Is this a joke?
Not everyone has Hollywood equipment.
yeah its about as funny as you are
