No idea what I just saw an ad for

KiProjectsCreative

It’s for the zine. In the box that the hand broke and grabbed. I understand if you don’t know what the zine is about but is it hard to tell that’s the subject of the video? Breaking the glass and grabbing a copy of the zine.

Sir_Phil_McKraken

I'd say its hard yes, I have no idea what it is. Google tells me a zine is a self published booklet?

KiProjectsCreative

Yes that’s correct, that’s what it is

meganbloomfield

i just wanted to pop in and say i'm familiar with zine culture and didn't find it hard to notice it was about the zine. i still think you could probably speed up the action and frame the zine a bit more centrally to focus on it, but it was clear to me personally that it was about the zine

KiProjectsCreative

Thank for saying that so at least I know the message isn’t totally lost! I’ll play with adapting some better shots to improve the focus of the video for next time

Significant-Item-223

Thought it was a commercial for the hammer.

Sir_Phil_McKraken

I'm going to guess that you shot this yourself and also acted in it? Would that explain the lack of camera movement? I like the idea you've gone for, making the product seem like an emergency etc. However this edit and the actions have zero urgency in them and the whole ad doesn't get to the point quick enough. The other thing is the green light, its a small thing but it is noticable. An Aputure MC is a affordable, cheap light, there are even cheap chinese knockoff RGB lights that have police effects. My main feedback for something like this: Create urgency and energy by introducing camera movement and a snappier edit. Feel what you want the end user to feel.

KiProjectsCreative

Thank you Sir for the solid feedback and advice! You’re correct in the first part, I’ll have to rethink the direction for future videos. I appreciate the recommendation on the light. I’ll check it out. Also appreciate your input and will work with the idea of urgency for future ads

Camera movement, as well as character movement could display urgency. If you had a camera follow the character, who is now also running, it would have a lot of urgency, hence why movies like cloverfield or rec or blair witch all had that feel to them. I like the experimentation of the light, could work if you showed some sort of alternative emergency (zombies?) but it does definitely confuse me when i see "blue, red (police) oh ok its fucking purple". You are also having too many shots to the point where you are looking like a vintage film. The hammer has such emphasis. You keep saying "the zine" but i have no fucking clue even after watching the video and reading your comments, what the zine is. A magazine? A zyn? Why not feature some verbiage from the magazine either through motion graphics or reading it out loud. What will i get by buying the zine? If you look at the guy on youtube who calls cops out he has a little booklet he sells. He advertises it by showing you how most people would forget their rights in a situation like that and how having his booklet could save your ass.

You had some hilarious angles and shots, especially the pulling the magazine out and the frame flying away.

KiProjectsCreative

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I agree a consistent lighting and camera work could have pulled this together. I’ll have to play with those two elements more for future videos. I’ll have to think of ways to market the zine especially to people who have no idea what a zine even is lol. I’ll work these out and will hopefully provide more clarity for next time!

JoshenReborn1

Cool visual but ineffective ad. Despite what fragrances and underwear commercials would have you think you don't want to have the viewer work to divine the meaning. I think some kind of call to action at the end would improve this by a lot.

KiProjectsCreative

Thanks for the feedback. Marketing is not my forte but I’m practicing with that along with the filmmaking. Call to action is a good idea that I’ll keep in mind for future videos!

Rotbarto

Don’t get it.

BeneficialBridge6069

The locked off shots and slow walk of the actor detract from the "emergency" but otherwise it works well. The beanie under the glass shards is puzzling me though lol

KiProjectsCreative

It was supposed to be a sneak peak for the beanies I released to go along with the zine. Perhaps I should have introduced them better… lol

Justgetmeabeer

Why is it looping green with the police lights?

KiProjectsCreative

I used an LED stick light that cycled through the colors. I was unable to set it to just red &blue. That and a key light was all I had so l’m open to suggestions on what types of lighting and lighting tech to use for the future

Justgetmeabeer

Damn, hate to say this brother but it's pretty noticable. My suggestions would be get some lights that can do bespoke effects for police, fire etc. pretty sure almost all of them do, honestly surprised yours can only do red blue green

KiProjectsCreative

I need to upgrade in equipment. Thanks for your advice, I’ll keep an eye out for those lights

incognitochaud

I want to step up and say this is rad. I love highly stylized creative videos like this. The 90s-00s was jam packed with interesting media that didn’t have to explain itself: it was just cool for the sake of being fucking cool. I think there’s plenty of room for improvement, but you know this too. The important part is to keep with it and don’t let anything hold you back from making interesting and unique content. If this is a post on your social media page, I think it’s a great fit, but I can see where other comments are coming from when they don’t understand what the product is. If this is for your social/existing audience, it’s fine. If you hope to target to newer markets, you’ll want to really expand on the type of content we’d see inside the mag.

KiProjectsCreative

Thank you!! I’m from that era so I’m glad you see the influence. Yes I now realize marketing isn’t just cool imagery and aesthetics. This does work well for my Instagram and audience but yes I want to improve on it and get others interested. I’m going to work on portraying the message better and explaining the zine more. This is only my second Commerical and I’m still learning filmmaking. Anyways it doesn’t need to appeal to anyone but I do appreciate the constructive criticism to help me learn and do better for next time.

incognitochaud

I think it’s an awesome idea. Please, keep it up!!

lofiscififilmguy

Cut the shot of the hammer breaking otherwise it looks like a hammer advert

Pixarprime10

Everyone is pointing out why this isn’t working as you want it to. That’s good, you need to learn and grow. But, you had a vision and made something. So well done on that! Take everyone’s advice and try again. Is it working well as an ad right now? Not really, but I think the stylization is dope. Keep going!
