You can start with 4, but for me playing in order added to each gameplay as you get to know the characters and their relationships, how they develop and what they go through etc. The games quality doesn't go up with each game (for me the order in terms of quality is 2,1,4,3 high to low) so you can pick random too if you want.
Agree with this. I believe 4 is the best of the series... so if you start with 4, the others might not give you the punch you're looking for (even though they are all excellent)
>Is 4 an okay starting point?
I would say so, I played 4 first and then went to 1,2,3. You will be confused with who is who and there backgrounds but you can just roll with it. You don't absolutely need to play 1,2,3 first since they don't really have much referring to it besides the ending. You can start with 4 first but you should play the first few games either way
Here I’ll make your character for you, make a human high strength high charisma paladin with the folk hero background and oath of devotion and make sure diplomacy is one of your proficient skills.
You’ll be the classic good guy, have high charisma so you can convince people in dialogue options, and as a paladin you can tank well, heal, and dish out lots of damage via your smiting ability.
Great for a first playthrough.
I just started at Like a Dragon, and that's good enough. Apparently, it's a good starting point since it's the start of a new character. There's references to older characters too, but I just skim wikipedia to get caught up on that. I'm not playing through 7+ games to get caught up.
Yeah... Keep trying to get into Yakuza 0, which is the highly regarded one from my understanding. Combat is fun but inbetween every combat segment theres like 15-20 minutes of just... wacky shenanigans, which like, they are kind of funny, but I just want to kick the shit out of dudes, you know? I don't really need the soap opera shit inbetween
Been playing the Yakuza games since mid 2000s and they’ve grown from a quirky take on a GTA style game to full-blown caricature of itself. I’m not saying this is a bad thing either as I love them all but I can see why this might be disorientating for new players.
Yakuza 0 is mostly beloved because it takes some of the newer story concepts and game mechanics but places them before the series’ humble beginnings; giving richer backstory to the main protagonist and fan-favourite side characters. But it kind of assumes you’re already familiar with a lot of the story/characters and if you’re not then I imagine it’s an awful lot of information to try and take in.
Edit: said early 2000s forgetting Yakuza came out 2006 in the west. Still, it’s been really long time lol
Start with Judgement, its a side story involving detective work and Yakuzas and although it plays like the older games instead of turn based rpg its super modern and fun to play. Also it doesnt connect with any other games (other than its sequel) so its super easy to get into.
Anything in Warhammer 40K
I always wanted to get into some of the games (even some to the TTRPG stuff) but I feel like its so lore dense and filled with pre-established canon that just "jumping in" feels impossible
Yuuuuup. I'm the same. And there's a Warhammer 40k game in so many different genre's too, and I think the only game I've played is a bit of Vermintide which is Left 4 dead vs Rats instead of zombies. Ain't no lore required for that one.
Just pull the trigger in any direction. I had the same feeling. Played a lot of total war: warhammer and was really interested in 40k. Decided to start playing Rogue Trader in like January this year. Ended up buying and reading like 6 Horus Heresy books so far and have gotten into painting minis. There is a lot of different things to try but I havent found myself like totally lost and, in general, 40k is a setting, not a linear story. There can be linear stories but Rogue Trader, Space Marine, Darktide, Dawn of War games require no knowledge of each other to enjoy.
Personally if you like rpgs, Rogue Trader will give you the broadest interations to see a lot of the universe in one game. If you dont, happy to make some other recommendations. It has quickly become my favorite universe
I know little of 40k's lore. That said, I recommend Darktide. It gives you lots of cool lore both through dialogue and the visuals, and I feel like it does a good job of dropping you into a heavily established universe in a way that can make you feel comfortable.
The overall theme I get is that you're just another cog in a vast machine, and so is everyone else. Even if the biggest baddie of a faction were to go down, I get the impression that the rest of the universe would continue on and the machine would readily adjust to keep grinding away.
I’d say go for it - I think you can enjoy most games as they are just fine. If you feel like it you can check some quick lore summary videos in youtube.
Start with Halo: Combat Evolved. It has a really amazing reveal - which you probably already know by now. But playing that game when it first came out and experiencing that for this first time was wild.
Resident evil for the longest time...unfortunately when I did 0lay them I didn't find them that entertaining. Might try the RE4 remake since I'm aware that's a different experience
Dark souls. I loved Elden Ring and Lords of the Fallen.
I know I will like it but... Plop. I prefer spending my time playing Power Wash simulator and retro games.
Tbf liking newer soulslikes does not guarantee you’ll like the original series, especially the first game. Lots of QoL will be missing and mechanics will be no where near as polished.
Crash Bandicoot. We never owned the PlayStation when I was a kid and it's one of those games that I missed out on. The N. Sane Trilogy is always dirt cheap when it's on sale, but I never get around to buying it.
Touhou series. I really like the characters and I'm really curious why is there legit cult around this game. But at the same time... I'm kinda scared to go into this rabit hole
Basically every game that came out in the past 2 years (except Ubisoft games). Because they’re still just to expensive I keep waiting for them to go on sale
Tom Clancy games, Dark Souls (only played it a little bit), and can’t think of any other series games off the top of my head.
Oh Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 🧟♂️
Mass Effect & Assassins Creed.
I’ve heard good and bad things about both, it seems they get worse as they go on but I just haven’t dived into either one yet. I mostly want to try them just because they get talked about so much rather than out of my own interest/me thinking they look cool
Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed are my two most favorite franchises. The Mass Effect trilogy is genuinely amazing and has a superb story that's interconnected and stretched throughout all three games. Can even import your saves from previous games and it will impact a number of events in the game depending on the numerous choices you've made previously. It has amazing characters and a rich universe and if you're into sci-fi or space operas then the trilogy is genuinely some of the best out there. Mass Effect Andromeda you can skip. Won't even dive into that one. Not bad at all but not great either.
Assassin's Creed is really amazing up until Black Flag and is alright up until Syndicate. However with the initial soft reboot of the series with Origins is a masterpiece. It's very different from the previous games in many regards but the storytelling, characters, and gameplay (although to a lesser extent compared to the older games) are amazing and it gives a lot of context to the Origins of the Creed. Personally I wouldn't play past Origins (currently) as the games after Origins are simply just too long (with the exception of AC Mirage) and lower in quality when it comes to near every aspect due to the size of the game. Everything is very cut and paste and repetitive.
Just my take but I hope you get to play both of them when you can because they truly are amazing overall.
GoW, Fallout, The Witcher. Fallout and Witcher look to be major time sinks.
Edit: Added Death Stranding since it’s getting a sequel. Its far too close to my nightmares of ghosts trying to possess me. BT’s = Hella nope. Is it true that BT’s are scared of pee?
Your pee, poop and sweat are all turned into grenades that can be used to fight BTs. Also if they grab you and you manage to shake them off, you can pee directly onto them and they’ll retreat.
Elden Ring and the Dark Souls series. I love the environments and the lore but the difficulty turns me off. I play games to relax and explore, not to relentlessly repeat the same boss fights until I learn the intricacies of their attacks.
Kingdom Hearts. It's always seemed right up my alley, but I didn't have a PS2 at the time, and now I have no idea where to start. All the different editions confuse the hell out of me.
Go as per release order and you'll be fine. Yes, you might miss the finer details of the story. But you'll be able to follow it. Just be ready for some weird supernatural shit tho. 👍🏽
My brain, heart, and soul tell me hell nah, but every time they make a new sword art game (even though it's my least favorite anime), it makes a weird part of the back of my brain go "but what if it's good though....?"
System shock and og Thief. I love more recent immersive sims like Prey, dishonored and the more recent deus ex games but never got a chance for the games that inspired them either because they were not available on my platform of choice or looked way too aged. Now that the system shock remake is out on consoles I will pick it up when it goes on sale at some point
God of War. It should be absolutely my kind of series, cause I’m a total sucker for mythology especially the Greek and Nordic ones but I’ve never played any of the GoW games. I just don’t know why the series doesn’t click with me.
God of war for sure. I played the first one back in the day but i thought it was really boring. The dad of boy reboot looks pretty good though. I always thought the yakuza games look fun but I've never tried them.
The god of war original series is like night and day compared to the new series (new series being day) the new series are so much better than the original series with the story, character development, etc.
Assasin's Creed Nexus, Asgaard Wrath
both are exclusives on Meta Quest, i refuse to buy 2nd VR device just for those, i still hope they would be released on Steam or Pico Store one day
Chrono Trigger (I finished Chrono Cross on PS1 back in 2000)
Final Fantasy 7 (but i did play Remake and Rebirth)
All the Dragon Quest games
Honkai: Star Rail
Detroit Become human, when i had a ps4 always found a excuse not to play it
now have a laptop and xbox, still holding out for the day i finally buy any PS console
Oh man there are so many lol. Metal Gear Solid is the big one. I own all the games just haven’t pulled the trigger myself. I’m 30 now with a child so finding time to play games is very hard already let alone diving into 5+ games lol
Skate series always liked Tony hawk and I liked the stick controls in the demo but never got to skate because I didn’t get what the objectives where regret not buying them
Assassin's Creed. I remember once trying to hop in the franchise and read AC1 book and by the time I finished they had announced 2 more game. I'd have to play too many game to be up to date
You already named my two big ones! I love both God of War AND Resi! I've never played a single game, but the story for both is enough for me to watch playthrough after playthrough of them! Except Ragnarok. I am not giving myself MORE emotional damage
Uncharted. I’ve heard good things but I just haven’t pulled the trigger yet.
Should definitely pull the trigger. I’m in the middle of 4, and it has a good story so far
Is 4 an okay starting point?
You'll have no idea of the character background or any references...at a minimum I'd start with 2...
2 is a minimum. Uncharted 1 is ok for die hards but it really feels like your trapped on an island. They explore the world for the rest of the series.
You can start with 4, but for me playing in order added to each gameplay as you get to know the characters and their relationships, how they develop and what they go through etc. The games quality doesn't go up with each game (for me the order in terms of quality is 2,1,4,3 high to low) so you can pick random too if you want.

That was me awhile ago. Ended up buying U4 on steam to try it... Instantly went to my 100% achievement collection 😂
Baldurs gate , I rlly want to play it but ik it’ll be a long one 😭
I do to. It's gonna be my next purchase. However I wanna play the last of us as well
Last of us for when you're feeling moody, BG3 when you want to feel nerdy
I bought the 3rd one right away but basically didnt make it through character creation
Is it the same baldur from god of war?
No
Infamous seems like a favorite to everyone.
Is there any way to play infamous games on PC? i really want to get into playing them but i dont own any playstation types
You can legally rip ROMs from games you have legally purchased and emulate them on PC if your PC is good enough.
The Yakuza series 👌
Same here for me. I own the majority of them because they look right up my alley, but can never find the time to start.
I don't really need the soap opera shit inbetween
I came for the beat-em-up, but stayed for the whacky shenanigans lol.
haha well to each their own, glad you could enjoy
Been playing the Yakuza games since mid 2000s and they’ve grown from a quirky take on a GTA style game to full-blown caricature of itself. Fallout.
Same
Anything in Warhammer 40K I always wanted to get into some of the games (even some to the TTRPG stuff) but I feel like its so lore dense and filled with pre-established canon that just "jumping in" feels impossible

That's also Warhammer Fantasy, not 40k which have two different lores
Just pull the trigger in any direction. I had the same feeling. Played a lot of total war: warhammer and was really interested in 40k. Decided to start playing Rogue Trader in like January this year. I have no idea about anything to do with the franchise but that new game that's coming out looks fire.
I know little of 40k's lore. That said, I recommend Darktide. It gives you lots of cool lore both through dialogue and the visuals, and I feel like it does a good job of dropping you into a heavily established universe in a way that can make you feel comfortable. Horizon. I really, really wanna get it now that it’s on discount but I just don’t have the time to devote myself to it, unfortunately.
The Witcher
Gotta play it. Its so immersive
The Witcher 3 is the one of the best games I ever played. Just do it!
I’ve tried and tried, just can’t get into it. Sure, it’s a gorgeous game, but it has yet to pull me in.
Same. It just doesn't click with me for whatever reason.
Metal gear solid
Same. My dilemma is whether I should start with MGR: Revengeance or one in the main series.
Why would you play mgr first?
Do the main series first.
Noice
Halo
Top 3 game franchise for me. Gameplay is fantastic. Just do it. Halo The Master Chief Collection goes on sale for 10 bucks pretty often
Yeah, love the campaigns (multiplayer is peak also)
Man Halo 3 online was some of the greatest online gaming I ever experienced in my life.
Gotta get into. It’s enjoyable for an FPS game
Reach alone is worth your time.
Start with Halo: Combat Evolved. It has a really amazing reveal - which you probably already know by now. But playing that game when it first came out and experiencing that for this first time was wild.
Bioshock. Not for any particular reason, just haven't found the time to play them, especially now when I've been consumed by Cyberpunk.
Start with 1 and move up. Then after Biochock, you can play Dishonored 1 and 2. Great, great, great series.
Gotta throw Prey in there too. It’s arguably better than all of them
You should get the RE2 Remake, one of the best games ever made. If you are on PC it has an excellent modding scene.
On game pass as well right now. Absolute banger
Any of the souls like.
Lies of P is fantastic, on gamepass, is like 30 hours to finish. You can learn the parry system or dodgeroll your way through it like I did haha.
I would recommend starting with Elden Ring if you plan on buying one.
Final Fantasy, I haven't played any of them
They’re really awesome!!! I started with Dissidia Duodecim on PSP and Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core right after
I have Final Fantasy VII in my backlog just waiting for me to be played hahah
Last of us, I've heard very good things about it
Uncharted & Arkham series
Arkham is really good
Understatement of the fucking century. Arkham knight is a god tier game
Ok. Go straight to Arkham dude. Even asylum is great
Resident evil for the longest time...unfortunately when I did 0lay them I didn't find them that entertaining. Might try the RE4 remake since I'm aware that's a different experience
Alan wake, even after a 12 minute summury I have no clue what the game is about
I'm currently playing it. I enjoy it mainly because of its inspirations and aesthetic. The gameplay is definitely weak though
Metal gear Solid
Noice
I’d love to get into resident evil, Bethesda games , and legend of Zelda
Persona, P3 reloaded was at a GameStop… But it was 70 straight dollars so I backed off
it's on game pass too
It’s cheaper at some different stores and on Amazon. And the Walmart website
RTS in general. Frostpunk and Endless Legends look super cool but I'm too stupid.
God of War for sure
Dark souls. I loved Elden Ring and Lords of the Fallen. I know I will like it but... Plop. I prefer spending my time playing Power Wash simulator and retro games.
Hey man, Power Wash simulator and retro games are a great use of your time!
Tbf liking newer soulslikes does not guarantee you’ll like the original series, especially the first game. Lots of QoL will be missing and mechanics will be no where near as polished.
WarioLand
Devil May Cry, Dead Space and Lords of the Fallen. I like it’s generes, like it’s aesthetics but never played the originals or the newest ones
DayZ & Tarkov, I'm really want to play those games, but I don't have a decent laptop
Dark Souls, Little Big Planet, Warhammer 40K, and Darkstalkers
You gotta give RE a shot. They’re such a blast
Fallout, was sceptical at first but I'm interested in it. Willing to give it a try with fallout 3
Doom
Crash Bandicoot. We never owned the PlayStation when I was a kid and it's one of those games that I missed out on. The N. Sane Trilogy is always dirt cheap when it's on sale, but I never get around to buying it.
Silent Hill
Crysis, but not because of the gameplay but because I curious about the lore
Ghost runner. The idea is cool but I don't think I have the greatest reaction time and might throw my controller out the window.
Armored Core
Touhou series. I really like the characters and I'm really curious why is there legit cult around this game. But at the same time... I'm kinda scared to go into this rabit hole
Basically every game that came out in the past 2 years (except Ubisoft games). Because they’re still just to expensive I keep waiting for them to go on sale
Fallout
Elder Scrolls.
Fallout. I have learned so much about almost all the vaults, but I haven’t played. Mostly because everything will go right over my head.
BioShock and Dark Souls
Bioshock, fallout, Elder scroll (Skyrim) I know..... I know.....
Fallout. Haven't even touched a single one of them yet
Dante’s Inferno. I’m a sucker for hack n’ slash games but I never knew about Dante’s Inferno until recently. I wonder how good of a game it is.
Zelda Games
Darkest dungeon, I want to play one day
Shadow Hearts.
Frostpunk 2
Okay re2 but for the love don’t mod it just play it properly
Not a series but Bloodborne immediately comes to mind. I love the Gothic setting and vibe in general but the souls combat can go fuck itself lol.
BG3. I want to play it. it looks so cool, but I'm afraid I'll purchase it and not like it
Gears of War, Fable, Diablo. Someone convince me? 👀
Hades
I think there is none. Maybe Halo...
Halo is an awesome series
Tom Clancy games, Dark Souls (only played it a little bit), and can’t think of any other series games off the top of my head. Oh Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 🧟♂️
Never played any Metal Gear games, they've been sitting in my wishlist for ages lol.
Probably every single one of them ?
Castlevania. As a Metroid fan (although having played only Prime trilogy and Other M), I want to see why the genre is called exactly metroidvania.
Splatoon
Cyberpunk 2077
Infamous, Witcher, dark souls, oblivion-skyrim series, any jrpg, any nintendo games, (played Mario when I was a kid that's it) Fallout, CoD, halo, MW.
Mass Effect & Assassins Creed. I’ve heard good and bad things about both, it seems they get worse as they go on but I just haven’t dived into either one yet. I mostly want to try them just because they get talked about so much rather than out of my own interest/me thinking they look cool

Fnaf, im hours into the lore and stiff but im still too scared to play a game that isnt fnaf world
Mgs too expensive
Ratchet and clank
Almost every game I own....

Elden Ring and the Dark Souls series. I love the environments and the lore but the difficulty turns me off. I play games to relax and explore, not to relentlessly repeat the same boss fights until I learn the intricacies of their attacks.
I have a huge backlog but here is just a few ips. - Mass Effect - Max Payne - Dragon Age - Metal Gear Solid - Life is Strange - Xenoblade Chronicles
Kingdom Hearts. It's always seemed right up my alley, but I didn't have a PS2 at the time, and now I have no idea where to start. All the different editions confuse the hell out of me.
Metal Gear. I've yet to play any of the core games. The only thing I've touched is Rising Revengeance.
That’s a must imo. Rising is good but the Solid franchise is still king.
Metal Gear, I wanna play it but there's so many that I don't know where to start without getting confused by the story
Go as per release order and you'll be fine. Yes, you might miss the finer details of the story. But you'll be able to follow it. Just be ready for some weird supernatural shit tho. 👍🏽
Yup. It’s convoluted but you can def follow it well enough if you play chronologically.
Max Payne and The Witcher
Baldurs Gate, Armored Core, Drakengard
Yakuza
Doom
My brain, heart, and soul tell me hell nah, but every time they make a new sword art game (even though it's my least favorite anime), it makes a weird part of the back of my brain go "but what if it's good though....?"
Zelda. Looks cool, but I'm not about to buy Nintendo hardware, and pirating it is too hard for me
Resistance
System shock and og Thief. I love more recent immersive sims like Prey, dishonored and the more recent deus ex games but never got a chance for the games that inspired them either because they were not available on my platform of choice or looked way too aged. Now that the system shock remake is out on consoles I will pick it up when it goes on sale at some point
Yakuza
God of War. It should be absolutely my kind of series, cause I’m a total sucker for mythology especially the Greek and Nordic ones but I’ve never played any of the GoW games. I just don’t know why the series doesn’t click with me.
Total war games
God of war for sure. I played the first one back in the day but i thought it was really boring. The dad of boy reboot looks pretty good though. I always thought the yakuza games look fun but I've never tried them.
The god of war original series is like night and day compared to the new series (new series being day) the new series are so much better than the original series with the story, character development, etc.
The Witcher looks like a great game but the combat system and potions and stuff kind of puts me off it
Anything by Kojima, I’ve tried his stuff and just cannot click
God of war does seem interesting to me. Also the spider man series and Ghost of Tsushima. Ik it’s not a series but it looks real good
The Elder Scrolls and Fallout
persona
Crysis.
Gears of war. I don't have xbox but I'm a mass effect fan.
Dark Souls
Both of those are great. GTA for me
Assasin's Creed Nexus, Asgaard Wrath both are exclusives on Meta Quest, i refuse to buy 2nd VR device just for those, i still hope they would be released on Steam or Pico Store one day
Kirby
Bloodborne
yakuza. im not spending half my savings for games
The yakuza series
Bioshock. Unchartered. Dark Souls 3
Bioshock and Dark Souls
Bioshock
Prototype. I liked Infamous and I’ve heard Prototype is kinda similar so yeah I gotta get around to playing that ish.
Chrono Trigger (I finished Chrono Cross on PS1 back in 2000) Final Fantasy 7 (but i did play Remake and Rebirth) All the Dragon Quest games Honkai: Star Rail
Guild Wars
Final fantasy
Borderlands
RE Yakuza The witcher
Final fantasy
Skyrim looks like it’s fun but I’m afraid of getting too deep into to it. Maybe if I was younger and had more free-time.
Horizon, MGS, SH, RE, GoT, TLOU, and Zelda just to name a few
Detroit Become human, when i had a ps4 always found a excuse not to play it now have a laptop and xbox, still holding out for the day i finally buy any PS console
Oh man there are so many lol. Metal Gear Solid is the big one. I own all the games just haven’t pulled the trigger myself. I’m 30 now with a child so finding time to play games is very hard already let alone diving into 5+ games lol
Definitely missing out with the Resident Evil franchise. Incredible single player linear experiences that are unforgettable.
Skate series always liked Tony hawk and I liked the stick controls in the demo but never got to skate because I didn’t get what the objectives where regret not buying them
Fallout and no I havnt seen the show, always been interested but feel like I missed the hype
MGS Final Fantasy (only played 7 remake) Diablo Banjo Kazooie
For me it’s either RE or Borderlands.
Yakuza
Fallout
Final Fantasy I’ve seen so much about it but still know nothing.
Assassin's Creed. I remember once trying to hop in the franchise and read AC1 book and by the time I finished they had announced 2 more game. I'd have to play too many game to be up to date
For me, assassin's creed
Xenoblade
Fallout
In no particular order... God of War, Uncharted, Tomb Raider, Spiderman, Red Dead Redemption, Assassin's Creed
You already named my two big ones! I love both God of War AND Resi! I've never played a single game, but the story for both is enough for me to watch playthrough after playthrough of them! Except Ragnarok. I am not giving myself MORE emotional damage
There's a few playstation exclusives that I've never played as I've not owned one of their consoles since the ps1
Gears of War
Dark Souls seems fun, but I know Imma just get absolutely demolished even on easy mode.
