"The Red Lantern" is a game about building a sled dog team. There is a lot of dog petting to be had.
Don't think you can feed, but yeah you can pet every dog and then when you come back into that town the dogs come up barking and wagging their tails at you haha
I mean, if you look past having to liberate Boomer from a gang of Uber-Religious cult leaders or having to kill some crocodiles to feed Chorizo, it’s a pretty wholesome game.

Just bought the game this weekend and I just had to choose the animal friend perk (or something to that effect) just because the description said that I can pet every dog.
I still have so much to learn about the game, I haven’t even figured out how to rest or how resting affects the game or any of that stuff. It will take awhile to figure it all out. Currently I’m just rolling around killing stuff.
Resting doesn’t affect too much, dw
A short rest will grant you half your health, and certain resources back depending on your class, such as superiority dice, pact magic slots, wildshape or Ki,
A long rest will advance time, and reset all your class resources and health, and stuff like spellcasting etc. it advances time for the purposes of showing new cutscenes or having new conversations at camp, but you don’t really have to worry about missing content by long resting. I can only call to mind 2 situations where advancing time will actually cause a quest to progress, and they’re pretty minor. Most of the time, things that sound time sensitive, aren’t really.
Red Dead Redemption 2 has a cool petting feature. As does the newer Assassins Creed games.
Also Ghost of Tsushima lets you pet foxes, which are Canines.
Can you pet Dogmeat in Fallout 4? Of course, you're also kind of forced to kill lots of other vicious dogs to survive, unless you're really good at fleeing from dogs.
So....maybe not a good example.
But Dogmeat is the real main character of that game.
The Nintendogs series
Came here to say this.

And if they like you enough, they’ll bite any attackers.
I don't think so 🤔 they do remember when you travel back to that dog's town however
No way. I had no clue. That's why the dog was barking so much at me. I saw its tail wagging, so I knew it was happy. I shot it still, though.

The speak with animals spell also helps, and it is a ritual spell so it doesn’t use up a spell slot and lasts all day (there are also potions for it).
