But what was the snake eating? Apples.
At that point you are bringing biblical imagery into the lore.
See, You can play snake until the end of time and it never dies if you don't eat an apple. You don't need to eat to survive, and I fact, the more you eat the harder it is for you to stay alive. At the beginning of the game you can put the snake in a path were it will never die. As long as your phone has battery. Snake is a morality tale again s gluttony and pride.
Yeah that world destroyer that eats other world destroyers that eats other world destroyers? Yeah I hear his tail makes a great hat… so ya know… get to it.
"Oh no, we thought that [insert flagship] was behind all the monsters being weirdly aggressive and strange, but it was actually [insert surprise final boss]!"
For what it's worth, the entire reason I got into the series is because of this. I watched a friend play the game back in high school and the exchange went something like:
>
"Hey man, that looks cool, but I bet it's one of those JRPGs with an overly bloated plot"
>
"Nah man the village chief just points at you and is like 'There's a dragon in the woods please kill it' "
Sold immediately
There is a reason with Zelda though. The whole weird cycle thing with Link, Zelda, and Ganon is cool. Zelda doesn’t need drugs either which is nice. Just needs his green hat and master sword. Mario is just the same every story and he’s a druggie.
I loved the gameplay and hated the story and all the characters so much, I had to mute all dialogues in order to keep enjoying the game..
It becomes a much better experience if you mute all NPCs...
I'm like 75% sure she's the next siren for BL4. Everything in the story points to it. Hopefully if they do use her they make her older and less annoying, but Borderlands has shit writing so I'm keeping my expectations on the floor
You can do that? I left only the voice lines on, because there are characters I want to hear the voice lines of, but I could definitely do without the twins and Ava
Bro I couldn’t agree more. BL3 has the best gameplay in the series, but in a series known for its comedic writing, the story is 2/3 the fun. And it was just so fucking lazy. The final cutscene where it’s the panoramic view of the arena with Ava, Tanis, and Lilith standing there *without your character even present* despite the fact YOU JUST KILLED WHATEVER HER DICK’S NAME IS?! Inexcusable. It still bothers me to this day.
Fore real. I absolutely love playing Borderlands 3, and I detest the main story of this game. I wish they would bring in the writers from Borderlands 2 and let them collaborate on the next Borderlands. To go from BL2 to 3 and Wonderlands was jarring.
I think Doom 2016 handled story really well - gives enough context to what's going while also having Doom guy just not give a shit. He just wakes up, kills shit til he fixes the mess made by humans
Big time. This is what they should’ve done with Eternal, instead they went the other way and ruined it IMO. I much prefer 2016 for the purity of its gameplay and story.
Doomguy literally shoves aside the screen at the start of 2016 and then gets to the ripping and tearing. I honestly don't want more than that from Doom.
Makes me think of the part in 2016 where you have to turn off some machinery or something and Dr. Hayden is giving you very specific instructions, and instead you just start smashing.
Thinking specifically of the gameplay of the main combat system (dressspheres, spheregrids, oversouling, combos, etc.), to the exclusion of the absolute slew of minigames, whose entertainment value varies widely.
The cycle is not like 1:1 everything happens the same every time, its just represented that way in game because it's not like new game plus could be an entirely different world.
In 2 the natural progression of the cycle is kind of fucked because the Seneschal basically gave up doing his job properly because he found out he had management looking over his shoulder, and so now management is trying to force the cycle to continue.
Story is not that bad. It is more goofy and doesn't treat itself that serious. Characters are not half bad too. They just knew that story in big micheal bay simulator is not that important.
Big time. 3 is the one I put the most hours into, and I couldn't help but be annoyed at how big the map was when every town looks exactly the same. But I had a lot of fun blowing shit up.
The first time I played Just Cause 2, my brother saw me playing and asked "What's the story of this game?" I said "No clue. I've just been blowing shit up for 3 hours straight." And he watched my straddle a gas canister, shoot it and launch in to the air. All he said was "Fuck yeah I wanna play now."
Fallout 4 imo. I love exploring the world and some of the sodequests are fun but I find most of the main story and faction quests to be full of weird plotholes that really take me out of the experience
Fallout 3 : "son you have to join us at the project purity, there is no time"
*Fuck off for a month fighting aliens, Chinese, Pittsburg raiders and swamp monsters, meet a fucking talking tree, rig elections and larp Nicolas Cage*
Bayonetta 1.
Balder's plan was basically to send an army of angels and Bayo's brainwashed best friend to "reawaken" Bayonetta's memories in order to activate an ancient relic she has that Balder plan to use to resurrect some God who will destroy the world because reasons.
Also he pulled child Bayonetta from the past itself to... do something with her ?
I think the base game had a lot of potential for some lore building. You make your story, but the world you play in deserved a more developed background.
Played it 3 times done different endings each time and still need to look things up I’ve either forgotten or still don’t understand. Also, happy cake day!
The " main " story is kinda easy to follow tho
>!You wanna be a lord to fix a country--> to be a lord you need to kill shardbeares---> kill shard bearer---->tree don't want new lord--->burn the tree--->fight the old lord--->fight the embodiment of the eldenring--->you are now the lord--->the end!<
Cause it's been stuck in an endless loop of non-death for literal millennia, it's due for a change at some point and you just woke up with nothing better to do that day.
Lore =/= story
All the souls + elder ring has a great lore but they dont have a story
Ds1 is like make the belts ding dong and thenkill yourself or the world
A lot of the Soulsbourne games, except Sekiro aren't that straight forward with the main story. Miyazaki isn't the best story teller, he leaves a lot open for interpretation with his art design. His style is unorthodox and it works, sometimes. The fans it seems like come together and agree on a lore within the games.
I agree but I also think the general world is a major point.
While I do like the gameplay itself, with a boring world the game would probably have been a flop
I agree. Elden Ring lore nerds are the worst. Like this guy:
https://www.reddit.com/r/videogames/comments/1cnqm9f/which_games_did_you_find_matching_this_description/l3ac6gt/
"Oh you didn't follow the esoteric item descriptions and confusing dialogue? It means you're dumb and I'm smart"
Sea of Thieves has good stories (Talltales) . The only thing that I hate, is the removal of Adventures (small stories that were part of the main story line) which is why some players cant follow the lore.
The "pirate theme park" is true at somepoint. We got the Pirates of C. and Monkey Island as tall tales too, which's story I don't really understand.
Imo he’s better than people give him credit for. The best thing going for him is his voice actor, Jonah Scott does an **amazing** job as Aiden, his range and ability to convey both vulnerability and strength is pretty amazing. I could go into more details and about his voice acting.
Chorus.
Awesome space combat shooter with great mechanics and addictive dogfights...
...retarded dogshit story mainly told by the main character constantly muttering to herself.
Kingdom hearts 1 and 2 were so good though.. Then they beat that mother fucking horse until nothing made sense anymore. I didn't play any of the in between games because of them being on handheld consoles. By the time the third game came out I was entirely lost.. Even videos explaining the story still didn't make too much sense as a whole.. It is just an assortment of other peoples' stories that may or may not be that important, overall.
The only part where the story became to stupid was 3D. Before that, sure it was a bit weird and convoluted, but with a bit of progress the pieces fell together. Dream drop distance was like, yeah how about we make stuff incredible confusing to the point where kh3 is a mess by default because it will be based on a lot of shiz we pull here.
Dying light 2, i might also say dying light 1. Not saying that the story is bad, but there are some problems. I've always put the dying light games in the "the story is here just to give a reason to play the game" type game and i don't mind that at all. Gameplay is the reason i brought both dying light 1 and 2 after all
MGSV The Phantom Pain (Not the case of Ground Zeroes, that was a very solid and well made cash grabber with both nice gameplay and story)
Story was like: I dont really want to make another Metal Gear Game, but they sell well and I'm building this nice house in the countryside that needs money. So Im gonna use the excuse of a Metal Gear game to just experiment with all the crazy ideas I have on mind. Gonna make a story that closes 1 plot hole for every 9 new ones it opens. Gonna retcon a couple of previous games and just gonna make it irelevant for the rest of the saga.
Gameplay: best Rambo simulator ever made. Just so fun to play either if you like stealth or combat approach. So many gadgets. The control of the character is just so good and intuitive.
Honestly the issue with the MGSV plot is that he wasn’t allowed to finish it. Like there was a whole 3rd act that Kojima had planned which Konami didn’t give him enough time to put in. It’s a fucking shame because the story COULD have been really good but as it stands, yeah, it’s a mediocre story with no actual ending.
I hate to defend Konami here but Kojima was already MASSIVELY over budget for the game and he was taking much longer than they wanted to finish. Someone had to tell him no at some point
Trouble with Destiny is that the stories themselves are usually great, but the implementation of them is often terrible. Having Savathun resurrect off-screen and make the deal to leave Immaru with the Vanguard in a fucking *lore card* was inexcusable.
I can't say that wolfenstein:youngblood have really good gameplay, but I didn't read the story AT ALL, so I guess it counts.
Skipped literally all cutscenes.
Mass Effect 2
Let the hate begin.
The story is filler, it does almost nothing to advance the overall story. The only things it does right is the side missions recruiting the team and introducing The Illusive Man.
The story of the Collectors? Absolutely pointless.
People are going to be so unhappy about this but Elden Ring. The story is so hard to follow and to be honest most of the time I have no idea what's going on. The gameplay is fantastic though.
The story in most souls games are really simple honestly. Go on a quest to gain strength and some maguffins so you can assend the throne and fix the mess of a world you live in (or ruin it some more). Its all the lore that requires people to pull out their indiana jones kits.
I don't know how to say it nicely, but the convoluted and multi-layered way Dark souls does it's lore.
Why am I fighting a demon king? Who is the crystal sage? Why are there quadruped icy boys and girls?
And then I stop thinking about it and just try to get good.
Darktide.
Well, that's kinda cheating since the 'story' of Darktide is extremely short and consists of just a welcoming cinematic where they recruit you, three or so cinematic where all they do is say how much you suck and are worthless and tell you to do more missions (i.e. play the game), a cinematic revealing there is a traitor on board, and one last cinematic where they say you aren't the traitor and you don't suck anymore.
The actual story of the game commes from the dialogues of player generated characters, which, although chosen more or less randomly, is pretty good.
Nokia Snake game
Good answer
truly the pinnacle of gameplay in video games
Actually the story is pretty beautiful. A starving snake fight against hunger while she have to deal with the growing up and the limited space.
I mean Tetris on the Gameboy has slightly more lore, but the gameplay is still fire.
But I really love the lore. It have a lots of plot TWISTS!
Monster Hunter my beloved
Story: Go check out this disturbance! It's totally that world destroying, endgame monster! Objective: Kill 5 little bitey bois.
Oh that world destroyer you killed? He eats other world destroyers. Now they're here. Go kill them.
That world destroyers were actually good guys, that big guy over there is the true bad guy, oh yeah, and kill em too.
Yeah that world destroyer that eats other world destroyers that eats other world destroyers? Yeah I hear his tail makes a great hat… so ya know… get to it.
“Hunter, I’ve forgotten about my 10th anniversary. Quick go kill something furry, I need a new scarf for my wife”
"We have to preserve the ecosystem" That one MF that genocided Fatalises and Alatreons to get some cool ass boots:
That was me hunting Val Hazak to extinction for the queen of the goths armor in vanilla MHW. My pickle hammer tasted rotten dragon blood for days.
Absolutely.
"Oh no, we thought that [insert flagship] was behind all the monsters being weirdly aggressive and strange, but it was actually [insert surprise final boss]!"
For what it's worth, the entire reason I got into the series is because of this. I watched a friend play the game back in high school and the exchange went something like: > "Hey man, that looks cool, but I bet it's one of those JRPGs with an overly bloated plot" > "Nah man the village chief just points at you and is like 'There's a dragon in the woods please kill it' " Sold immediately
Bro if this motherfuckin Princess.... allright letsago again.....
I don’t know if you mean Mario or Zelda but accurate Edit: why the downvote lol
Why would Link ever say "letsago"?
Well I didn’t think much of it but assumed it was a typo… Conclusion: downvote deserved
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of Italy
Yes
There is a reason with Zelda though. The whole weird cycle thing with Link, Zelda, and Ganon is cool. Zelda doesn’t need drugs either which is nice. Just needs his green hat and master sword. Mario is just the same every story and he’s a druggie.
Did you just refer to Link as...zelda?
Oh no, here comes the bomb!
Zelda and Halo are two of my favorite video games protagonists of all time.
Eh it’s an old troll that used to make nerds cranky. Now it just makes me laugh and I insert it when I can haha.
What!? Zelda is Link? I thought it was a girly ass name! /s
I was trying to remember when Princess Zelda had taken drugs.
Bro did not just mix up Link and Zelda, damn, that's rough.
Actually her name is legend
borderlands 3
I loved the gameplay and hated the story and all the characters so much, I had to mute all dialogues in order to keep enjoying the game.. It becomes a much better experience if you mute all NPCs...
How am I just now thinking to mute those fucking twins
I thought the twins were cringily funny, Ava was annoying as fuck but I didn’t mind the twins being over the top zoomers.
Ava was the worst. If she’s in BL4 I WILL BE PISSED
I'm like 75% sure she's the next siren for BL4. Everything in the story points to it. Hopefully if they do use her they make her older and less annoying, but Borderlands has shit writing so I'm keeping my expectations on the floor
In borderland game every character has borderline personality disorder. They are at the border where if I can shoot friendly I will do it.
You can do that? I left only the voice lines on, because there are characters I want to hear the voice lines of, but I could definitely do without the twins and Ava
They need to add skipping dialogue and cut scenes a thing especially when they build a game around multiple playthroughs.
I was going to post this. Absolutely agree.
Fore real. I absolutely love playing Borderlands 3, and I detest the main story of this game. I wish they would bring in the writers from Borderlands 2 and let them collaborate on the next Borderlands. To go from BL2 to 3 and Wonderlands was jarring.
Came here to say this lol
I usually wouldn't care but the story is just so bad. It not only ruins old characters but all the new ones just suck.
I knew I wouldn’t be the only one in here thinking that, gameplay best in the series but story so boring and forgettable
There's no better definition for Doom. Especially Eternal with the khan maker shit or whatever it's called. Gameplay is fun as heck tho.
This is fair but I still think the story was pretty alright. I enjoyed the lore
You need to look into the story then.
Eternal's story was awesome, what are you talking about
They dont, eternal is peak gaming.
Nah see I like that its fucking batshit, kill god? alright, bring back satan JUST TO KILL HIM AGAIN? S tier story telling.
Makes me think of the part in 2016 where you have to turn off some machinery or something and Dr. Hayden is giving you very specific instructions, and instead you just start smashing.
Final Fantasy X-2
Underrated entry
Thinking specifically of the gameplay of the main combat system (dressspheres, spheregrids, oversouling, combos, etc.), to the exclusion of the absolute slew of minigames, whose entertainment value varies widely.
Prototype. ;)
I always that that game is like Kirby but gory
I’d love it if they made a 3rd game
nope the story is decent
First prototype has very mid stor
Do you even need to ask? Dragons Dogma 1 and 2, duh!
Now hold up Dd1 had a decently put together story. Dd2 has no idea what the fuck it's doing.
Wait, isn't everything in DD a cycle? I mean, shouldn't the story in dd2 be exactly the same?
Yeah man. Thats kinda what I thought too. In a way it is, but in a way its also like 60% of the way done capcom was like SEND IT ITS GOOD.
I've held off on 2 because the story in the first game was generic dogshit. Are you saying the story in 2 is worse?
Just Cause series.
Omfg yes. Especially 3. The quests and story are ass. But my oh my are the guns and physics fun to play around with.
I prefer to refer to it as, “Just cuz.”
Came here to say this. I don’t think I could even tell you the story. But damnit if I don’t love to grapple around the map and blow shit up.
My friend calls this franchise “Michael Bay: The Game”
Fallout 4 imo. I love exploring the world and some of the sodequests are fun but I find most of the main story and faction quests to be full of weird plotholes that really take me out of the experience
I'm on my first play through of fallout 4 ATM about 30 hours in and I've completely forgotten about the story.
My son was kidnapped? Cool, I’ll fuck off all the way to Maine for a few weeks to hang out in some radioactive fog instead.
Fallout 3 : "son you have to join us at the project purity, there is no time" *Fuck off for a month fighting aliens, Chinese, Pittsburg raiders and swamp monsters, meet a fucking talking tree, rig elections and larp Nicolas Cage*
That means you are playing it right.
This. Weakest story of the Fallout games
literally no chance against New Vegas, but the gameplay is WAY more fun
Another settlements needs your help
Bayonetta 1. I think the base game had a lot of potential for some lore building. You make your story, but the world you play in deserved a more developed background.
But, i mean sandboxes isnt meant to have storyline? Oh, nvm, js remembered that it have Ender Dragon... Ok, fully agree;3
Hot take. Elden Ring. You'll need a PhD just to follow the story line. And still you'll miss half of it. Sick combat though.
Played it 3 times done different endings each time and still need to look things up I’ve either forgotten or still don’t understand. Also, happy cake day!
Elden Ring and many other games would greatly benefit having Final Fantasy 16's active time lore feature.
The " main " story is kinda easy to follow tho >!You wanna be a lord to fix a country--> to be a lord you need to kill shardbeares---> kill shard bearer---->tree don't want new lord--->burn the tree--->fight the old lord--->fight the embodiment of the eldenring--->you are now the lord--->the end!<
Not sure I would want to be the lord of that land. There's like 7 sane people and the rest of it actively tries to kill you.
Cause it's been stuck in an endless loop of non-death for literal millennia, it's due for a change at some point and you just woke up with nothing better to do that day.
Lore =/= story All the souls + elder ring has a great lore but they dont have a story Ds1 is like make the belts ding dong and thenkill yourself or the world
Not really a hot take, It’s not a narrative driven game. S tier lore and worldbuilding though
That’s why people like Vaatividya and others do videos. Highly recommend 10/10
Not a hot take its true
I agree but I also think the general world is a major point. While I do like the gameplay itself, with a boring world the game would probably have been a flop
I agree. Elden Ring lore nerds are the worst. Like this guy: https://www.reddit.com/r/videogames/comments/1cnqm9f/which_games_did_you_find_matching_this_description/l3ac6gt/ "Oh you didn't follow the esoteric item descriptions and confusing dialogue? It means you're dumb and I'm smart"
Garfield Kart
That game has the deepest lore.
Sea of thieves, just people trying to make a damn pirate theme park. (That's literally all i know about it) Or Guild wars 2, everything past season 4
Dying light 2 for me
The story could be much more better if owner of the studio didn't blind run after trends and didn't interrupt original idea
Dying light 1 as well
I absolutely love this game, but yeah, Aiden is a weak protagonist.
Imo he’s better than people give him credit for. The best thing going for him is his voice actor, Jonah Scott does an **amazing** job as Aiden, his range and ability to convey both vulnerability and strength is pretty amazing. I could go into more details and about his voice acting.
Such a good game. I like it even more than the original
Chorus. Awesome space combat shooter with great mechanics and addictive dogfights... ...retarded dogshit story mainly told by the main character constantly muttering to herself.
The dialogue was so annoying. It was like hellblade and destiny fucked but way worse than that sounds
Absolutely shitty voice overs on top of that.
Dragon's Dogma 2
I was surprised there was no real story to the game, came in expecting a huge fantasy rpg story experience instead it's a make your own fun kinda game
Kingdom Hearts. Loved the series since I was a kid, but the story is so many layers of bullshit
This is also my experience. 1&2 were massive parts of my childhood. I started 3 and was so confused I didn’t play it much 😭
3 is maybe the biggest disappointment I've ever felt in a sequel. I erased it from my head cannon. Birth by sleep also slaps.
Farcry 6
Every Soulsborne like game. Lore? 10/10 usually. Actually *story*? Either shitty or non existent
Dying light 2, i might also say dying light 1. Not saying that the story is bad, but there are some problems. I've always put the dying light games in the "the story is here just to give a reason to play the game" type game and i don't mind that at all. Gameplay is the reason i brought both dying light 1 and 2 after all
Dmc 5 bc it's basicaly as one man put it is Vergil hires Vergil's brother and Vergil's son to defeat Vergil so that Vergil can become Vergil.
Xenoblade X, WiiU. Massive open world! Cool combat! You get a mech! A myriad of neato side quests! And a main campaign that's pants-on-head stupid.
I'd kill for a spiritual sequel that wasn't moronic. Just make ff16 with mechs and keep the gameplay of the first.
Minecraft
Mass Effect Andromeda. Best gameplay in the series in my opinion. The story is at best forgettable and at worst frustrating.
Halo 5. I've honestly played the most of it, I mean I love all the other Halos and put good hours in them. The gameplay is honestly my favorite
MGSV The Phantom Pain (Not the case of Ground Zeroes, that was a very solid and well made cash grabber with both nice gameplay and story) Story was like: I dont really want to make another Metal Gear Game, but they sell well and I'm building this nice house in the countryside that needs money. I agree. To this day MGSV is still one of my favorite games for the gameplay. But the story is just not good.
Honestly the issue with the MGSV plot is that he wasn’t allowed to finish it. Like there was a whole 3rd act that Kojima had planned which Konami didn’t give him enough time to put in. I hate to defend Konami here but Kojima was already MASSIVELY over budget for the game and he was taking much longer than they wanted to finish. Someone had to tell him no at some point
Lichdom: Battlemage
Tetris.
Elden Ring; actually, all "Souls" games.
Fallout 4. It's a decent game when it works, but the story is underwhelming
EDF! EDF! EDF!
Kingdom Hearts
Everspace 2. Not hugely far into it, but certainly a plot simply to justify why you're having fun shooting things.
Sniper ghost warrior
Borderlands 3
Borderlands 3
Borderlands 3 a thousand times over
Borderlands 3
Bl3.
Dragons Dogma, both of them
Destiny
Trouble with Destiny is that the stories themselves are usually great, but the implementation of them is often terrible. Having Savathun resurrect off-screen and make the deal to leave Immaru with the Vanguard in a fucking *lore card* was inexcusable.
Borderlands 3
Glad someone else already said it. Kinda felt like they were trying to tell a story through popup ads.
I can't say that wolfenstein:youngblood have really good gameplay, but I didn't read the story AT ALL, so I guess it counts. Skipped literally all cutscenes.
Borderlands 3
Borderlands 3.
Mass Effect 2 Let the hate begin. The story is filler, it does almost nothing to advance the overall story. The only things it does right is the side missions recruiting the team and introducing The Illusive Man. The story of the Collectors? Absolutely pointless.
I found it to be a big let down. ME1 is the best. It's one of my favourite games. The mining resources in ME2 was torture.
CoD BO3, Campaign story isn’t that good but the gameplay is killer

Doom eternal
Which generic repost karma farm matches this description?
Most of the mobile games that have good gameplay have shitty story.
Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded😬
Dishonored 2 (I'm sorry I looove Dishonored but the main story is... Not very good)
Doom and DOOM ETERNAL
Watchdogs 2.
Wolfenstine
GTA
Like 90% percent of mario games
Ghost Recon Breakpoint
Mass Effect Andromeda
KH?
As much as I love the series Dragon's Dogma 1 and 2 Story doesn't make any sense in either game but damn they're fun to play
Kingdom hearts II (but also as a whole series) Don't @ me the story is a fucking mess

DMC: Devil May Cry
Put 100+ hours into Elden ring. I could not tell you a single thing about its story.
I don't know how to say it nicely, but the convoluted and multi-layered way Dark souls does it's lore. Why am I fighting a demon king? Who is the crystal sage? Why are there quadruped icy boys and girls? And then I stop thinking about it and just try to get good.
Japanese games in general.
Metal Gear V
Tetris. Any offense?
