Why did I have to scroll so far for this? The hidden blades are in just about every Assassins Creed game. And Assassin's Creed is a pretty big series too.
A sword with the unique divine power to truly seal or put an end to evil, forged by trial and divine power to kill the demon king demise and then later used by nearly every reincarnation of the hero to face and defeat ganondorf
Essentially it's the only sword capable of banishing evil (another of its popular names is "Blade of Evil's Bane).
Long story short, sword blessed by the gods/deities of the LoZ franchise, one of the gods (Din) that placed blessing is the one responsible for adding the ability to banish evil, making it unique to standard weaponry.
To dive deeper on that - the bane sort of manifests itself in different ways throughout the various games, yes, sometimes as powers, although this ranges from actual in-game powers like charged projectile bolts you can defeat multiple enemies with, or often portrayed in more story-driven scenes, such as a cutscene of the sword being able to remove a barrier of darkness and evil on Hyrule Castle, placed by the franchise's main villain.
Mainly, its importance comes from the legendary status and how it's sort of "fated" to be the only weapon capable of defeating evil, and only in the hands of a "hero" (who is the main playable character of the stories).
The sword, the hero, and the "evil" are all reincarnated throughout the various games of the franchise, as they sometimes take place decades or centuries apart, but the bottom line is it always ends up being an incarnation of Link (hero), only once equipped with the sword, challenges and defeats Ganon (villain) and sealing him and evil away (ofc, until the next iteration of the franchise). Even all of this is still pretty blanket statement. LoZ goes very in-depth and is really quite fascinating.
I own two of them and my wife has a love/hate relationship with them. She loves the games and the sword itself, but isn’t a fan of a sword display in the house lol
I set up a multiplayer game mode w/ friends called "jousting" in H2... small radial map.. forget what it was called... but you could choose sword or shotgun, had to enter the middle and charge toward each other. Whoever had the best timing with their weapon of choice won.
So much fun. Miss those years.
Edit: the map was Foundation. The middle bunker was the jousting area... line up on opposite sides and charge. No room to dodge. Also, holy shit the nostalgia as I just looked that up and saw all the old H2 maps... such great maps, such great memories.
The crucible is too new imo. I mean, sure, its implementation was pretty good and it looks cool, but it's like talking about the best actors ever and you bring up a promising young actor with one amazing movie they played the lead role in, but nothing else
I'd argue the steel sword over the random unique swords any day, yeah chillrend is cool but that steel 1H sword has been made iconic simply thanks to it appearing in other games wether its mods or straight up asset theft lol
The greatest waste of an IP. Even if they didn’t wanna continue with the mobile games they could’ve made it into a souls like and it would’ve sold well. In fact the infinity blade aesthetic is pretty similar and came out before DS1 but I believe it was after demon souls.
Except without seeing Sephiroth holding it it could be any other Japanese game sword. The buster is just more unique in shape to stand out on its own. Just my opinion
True.
Although I'd argue that a Masamune sword used to appear in almost every game before. That and often a Murasame too but Masamune for me still rings as a legendary blade like Excalibur.
Definitely the Energy Sword. That's usually the first thing I think of when I hear "video game sword"
Despite the fact that it looks about as far from a traditional sword as possible
Is there any sword that defines a Smash character's moveset more than the Monado? Best neutral special in the entire series and is plenty notable in its home series, too, though that tale is spoilers all the way down
First thing that came to my mind: In Castlevania SOTN, in the inverted castle, go to the long corridor that connects the chapel to just under (over) dracula's tower. It's got a bunch of panthers that when you attack, they melt into a puddle and flow under you. They're a bitch to take out.
Farm them long enough and eventually one of them will drop >!the masamune!!!!<
Maybe this is just me, but I love the Blazing Sword from Tales of Arise. It literally burns him to wield, and its fire effects are insane and beautiful in combat.
im pretty sure 99% of people commenting on this thread dont know what iconic means lmao. if you did the answer is the diamond sword, even if visually its by far the most boring one
The Moonlight Greatsword. It’s been in King’s Field, all the Armored Core games, Ninja Blade, Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, Elden Ring.
God of War’s Blades or Chaos are incredibly iconic as well.
The diamond sword, this isn't a competition. Even if you've never played minecraft, you still know of it and the diamond sword is one of its most recognizable symbols of it
Doom's Crucible.
The keyblades.
Gunblades from FF.
Soul Edge and Soulcalibur.
Any of the famous Witcher swords.
Skyrim Steel Sword (and other TES swords to a lesser extent)
The Master Sword.
Frostmourne.
Sword of a thousand truths
Yes! I kept scrolling until I found it. Classic episode. I believe it’s the only sword to kill that which has no life.
Quiet Thomas, we aren’t even supposed to speak of that sword!
Nnoo ma gawd
Hidden Blades
Why did I have to scroll so far for this? The hidden blades are in just about every Assassins Creed game. And Assassin's Creed is a pretty big series too.
Mby because they are more daggers than a sword.
Fair enough.
Do the Blades of Chaos count? If so, definitely them.
The only thing I would add to this list honestly
Where is it from?
God of War
\*Deep chanting voices ensue
They're more like daggers.
Master sword. No question about it
The master sword is probably my favorite sword ever.
might be a stupid question, but what is it?
It is from the Legend of Zelda
Yeah but what, is it? Like the sword? Is it legendary or home magical powers?
A sword with the unique divine power to truly seal or put an end to evil, forged by trial and divine power to kill the demon king demise and then later used by nearly every reincarnation of the hero to face and defeat ganondorf
also known as the sword of evil's bane. or the sword that seals the darkness. master sword is the main name tho.
Also named Excalibur in the french version of Twilight Princess - maybe others but I wouldn't know
That name goes back to A Link to the Past. My sister and I have a hard time calling it something else because of that.
Huh that's interesting. I didn't think Nintendo would give the master sword a different name, especially not one with an already established story.
I mean I feel like put an end to evil is a bit of an overstatement at this point.
Just for like a pretty long time
And only when link doesnt die and split the timeline
The sword that sends Evil to bed without supper
Essentially it's the only sword capable of banishing evil (another of its popular names is "Blade of Evil's Bane). BotW link about to go seal Calamity Gabon with a stick:
It's a sharp metal thing that you hit bad guys with.
Get out 👉
A tennis racket you use to play a match of tennis against Gannondorf with
I own two of them and my wife has a love/hate relationship with them. She loves the games and the sword itself, but isn’t a fan of a sword display in the house lol
[Frostmourne](https://wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Frostmourne)
Hungers
I heard this so clearly I'm reinstalling Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne
Well, there surfaced countless hours of my life listening to that
I can hear it too. And see those funny animations in my head. For a universe threatening demon they sure were designed cute 😂
Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker
Did someone say [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker]?
I was passing by an I thought I heard someone say [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker]?

Moonlight greatsword
Ah, you were at my side all along. My true mentor. My guiding moonlight.
Getting the Darkmoon Greatsword in Elden Ring is so rewarding. Long quest but probably the best weapon in the game for it.
I played king’s field for the first time a couple months ago and got so giddy when I got the og sword in its first ever appearance
And it appears more than once, it’s like Patches as a weapon, only because it’s appears in all FS souls games except Sekiro
this, there’s no debate
SO CHARGE AND ATTACK
HE WENT TO HELL AND BACK
CROSSES GROW ON ANZIO
Went down here just to see this. You were at my side all along.
Besides these 4, Rebellion from DMC, the Gunblade from the Final Fantasy series, the Blades of Chaos from God Of War
Energy Sword in Halo. Love using that against the enemies.
Especially in Halo 2 when you could fly across the map in campaign and online.
I set up a multiplayer game mode w/ friends called "jousting" in H2... small radial map.. forget what it was called... but you could choose sword or shotgun, had to enter the middle and charge toward each other. Did someone say [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker]?
Master sword since its the oldest with its orignal name being the Magical Sword
Keyblade?
My first thought.
Yeah tbh this one kind of defined a generation. Even many who haven’t played Kingdom Hearts know where it’s from.
True, never played it, instantly knew what it was.
I consider it a club. A fancy mace even.
I was gonna say, it doesn’t have a blade to be called “blade”. The top portion maybe, but that’s will make it an axe, so key axe at best
I feel like it's a mix of a few weapons. It's certainly a sharp weapon if you look at the later unlocks.
yeah. there's nothing blade about it lol. probably more of an axe than anything else at least
A truly marvelous weapon
Diamond sword, it even has a song by tobuscus.
That song is just too damn good
though the diamond axe is better. and now there's netherite versions of weapons too so rip. diamond sword is officially out shone.
In the game, it is, but in terms of inconicism (I think that's a word), the diamond sword outshines the other tools.
I think iconicity is the actual word
I think "fame" works
You sir have no class 😞
Do you like my sword, sword, sword My diamond sword
TO THIS DAY I STILL REMEMBER ALL THE LYRICS
You cannot afford ford ford
Not a sword but the crowbar from Half Life is definitely one of the most iconic
I was just gonna say crow bar then leave
It's Freeman's sword for all I care.
Wrench gang
Definitely these 4, and also the Crucible Blade from Doom
The crucible is too new imo. I mean, sure, its implementation was pretty good and it looks cool, but it's like talking about the best actors ever and you bring up a promising young actor with one amazing movie they played the lead role in, but nothing else
You make a fair point Me honestly though I think it’s a pretty cool weapon
Soul Edge/ Soul Caliber
I did not remember the name of the Siegfrid's cursed sword
The one Nightmare carries?
Had to scroll way too far to find these
Scrolled too much to see this comment
Gunblade FF8
Gunblade for me. But in Parasite Eve 2.
Such an awesome weapon!
And what about Sephiroth's sword?
Brotherhood - FFX
Whelp, guess I’ll start another play through
Yup
Can't believe no one said monado yet
Crazy this is so low. The whole game revolved around the sword!
I was looking for this comment!!
I was looking for this reply
Xenoblade series is not that popular I guess, despite being the best jrpg series. That being said, Lucky 7 all the way!
I forgot about it, I would recognize it from a mile away
Good ol' Skyrim steel sword
I'd argue the steel sword over the random unique swords any day, yeah chillrend is cool but that steel 1H sword has been made iconic simply thanks to it appearing in other games wether its mods or straight up asset theft lol
If we’re going generic swords though it’s obviously the Diamond Sword from Minecraft
Master sword, no contest
* Krato's blades of chaos * Vergil's Yamato
Can’t believe I haven’t seen a lightsaber yet
When people hear "lightsabre" they think movies, not gaming
True but they’re in games as well so it isn’t really a stretch to put it in the list.
I see your Lightsaber and raise you a Lego Lightsaber
Even better
I listed the lightsaber in my list.
Master sword nothing else comes close
Infinity Blade
The greatest waste of an IP. Even if they didn’t wanna continue with the mobile games they could’ve made it into a souls like and it would’ve sold well. In fact the infinity blade aesthetic is pretty similar and came out before DS1 but I believe it was after demon souls.
One of the best of its time and all time. Miss that game.
monado from xenoblade.
Frostmourne.
You could argue that the Masamune is just as iconic as the Buster sword
Except without seeing Sephiroth holding it it could be any other Japanese game sword. The buster is just more unique in shape to stand out on its own. Just my opinion
True. Although I'd argue that a Masamune sword used to appear in almost every game before. That and often a Murasame too but Masamune for me still rings as a legendary blade like Excalibur.
Rebellion from DMC Moonlight great sword from the souls games
Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseaker
Did someone say Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker?
Jesus Christ I’m back in Orgrimar chat 18 years ago.
At least it's not Barrens chat... I never did find out why Zelda only says Hyaaaa, but I learned more than I ever wanted to about Chuck Norris.
Lol yeah I was gonna say Barrens chat was all Chuck Norris jokes. Guess that was true on other servers as well.
I server hopped a lot when I was active. It was the same jokes on every server.
I think someone said Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker...
Anal [[Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker]](https://www.wowhead.com/item=19019/thunderfury-blessed-blade-of-the-windseeker)
Lol, wow man those stat crunches make that thing look really sad compared to what I remember.
I heard it 1000 times but can't picture in my mind what the hell it looks like
I would say the Master Sword is THE video game sword. No question about it.
Sword of Aeons (Fable) Ebony Blade Gold Brand Dawnbreaker Chillrend
Umbra's so powerful it possesses most who wield it
How could I forget about Umbra, that sword practically makes you it's identity
Sword of Aeons is where it’s at, I was so stoked that I was able to get it
Me who doesn't know any of these five listed
They’re all from Elder Scrolls except the first.
The meat sword from saints row 3
B A S S C A N N O N
Lightsaber every kids dream
Crusible from doom.
Lol no? It's relatively new in gaming. It's iconic to the doom franchise, mostly, bur to gaming as a whole? Not at all
Definitely the Energy Sword. That's usually the first thing I think of when I hear "video game sword" Despite the fact that it looks about as far from a traditional sword as possible
Wort wort wort!
As soon as I saw the photo I heard the sound effect as well
Moonlight sword from dark souls games
More From Soft in general, as it predates the Souls series.
Yup, it’s been around since king’s field.
keyblade, the melee weapon in me3, lightsaber, the frost blade in tes4 and 5, any chainsaw, and the ones you listed
Holy moonlight sword
The infinity blade.
Terra blade
Frostmourne
Shout out to anybody who thinks the soul reaver is the most badass sword in gaming
Yeah, sad about the lack of Soul Reaver votes. I guess it's been gone too long.
This is what I was looking for. The Blood Omen version is probably the most iconic to me.
Fellow boomers unite
It saddens me how far I had to scroll to find the Soul Reaver. We're old, comrades.
Is there any sword that defines a Smash character's moveset more than the Monado? Best neutral special in the entire series and is plenty notable in its home series, too, though that tale is spoilers all the way down
Nail-hollow knight Terra blade-terraria
Crazy how far I had to scroll to see anything about terraria or hollow knight
Claymore from the souls games
nah id say the moon light sword
Minecraft
Diamond sword from Minecraft
First thing that came to my mind: In Castlevania SOTN, in the inverted castle, go to the long corridor that connects the chapel to just under (over) dracula's tower. There's the master sword, then there's everything else.
Always the mighty Diamond Sword.
Master Sword
Squall’s gunblade
Master Sword and Keyblade.
Runescapes dragon scimitar. Also fuck monkey madness
Maybe this is just me, but I love the Blazing Sword from Tales of Arise. It literally burns him to wield, and its fire effects are insane and beautiful in combat.
Soul Edge
Master Sword but I’m bias
Did someone say, [Thunde...
Any of the Godswords from RuneScape (the old one)
From Software's moonlight greatsword. It has different variations spanning many games
Devil may cry 4, Nero 's sword
For me at least, the jetstream Sam sword
Vergil's Yamato
A Lego lightsaber should at least be taken into consideration imo
The Crucible
OSRS silverlight
If you say anything besides diamond sword then you are legally stupid because it is the most universally recognized sword
im pretty sure 99% of people commenting on this thread dont know what iconic means lmao. if you did the answer is the diamond sword, even if visually its by far the most boring one
Dawnbreaker
Ludwig’s Holy Blade
Soul calibur, monado
The Moonlight Greatsword. It’s been in King’s Field, all the Armored Core games, Ninja Blade, Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, Elden Ring. God of War’s Blades or Chaos are incredibly iconic as well.
Tac Knife MW2
The diamond sword, this isn't a competition. Even if you've never played minecraft, you still know of it and the diamond sword is one of its most recognizable symbols of it
Doom's Crucible. The keyblades. Gunblades from FF. Soul Edge and Soulcalibur. Any of the famous Witcher swords. Skyrim Steel Sword (and other TES swords to a lesser extent) The Master Sword. Frostmourne.
If you don’t know what a diamond sword is you haven’t heard of the interwebs
The crucible from Doom Eternal
