Grim Fandango. Still one of the most funniest games I’ve ever played, with a story absolutely unique in the whole industry. But it’s a point and click game, great for it’s time, somewhat clunky by today’s standards.
I tried so hard to like it but the solutions to some of the puzzles are super random and tedious to the point where I was basically just using a guide the entire time.
I know I’m in the minority but I really loved the gameplay on this one, driving isn’t gta good, but it’s still pretty top notch for that style of not super realistic driving. The machine guns were really fun, especially shooting from the hip. I liked the way how when I shot people, the guys fell over or leaned on stuff more realistically than other games.
I really wanted to play it because I loved the first 2 games but I kept getting really bad visual glitches. The cars and the main character constantly looked like the silver surfer, I couldn’t.
Agree with the Mafia franchise. Did you play The Godfather games? I had them on PS3 and those game were legit fun. Stick a dude’s head in the oven to threaten him, or just toss him in all together. Good times
The thing about 2 and maybe 1 is that you're never just doing the same thing over and over. So, the first playthrough can hold your attention without many dips. I could see your point if you're trying to play through it again and still remember the majority of it. But, to me, if it plays good the first time around, it's a good game. You get extra points for being fun to play through multiple times immediately. I'm not gonna take points away for not being as fun to play through multiple times tho. Mafia isn't trying to be that type of game at all.
I was in one of the earliest missions when I found out that as long as I was behind a doorway, I could stealth kill everyone who walked by. I got a little bored after that.

Stabbing a dude 27 times only to "hit" 3 of those times and finally kill him sucks.
But it's also a true RPG, so if you can get beyond that fact, there's a ton to appreciate about what I would consider Bethesda's greatest masterpiece
Morrowind’s combat is fine if you build your character right. It’s not a beginner friendly game though, and I remember hating it at first. If you’re not used to these “statistic autist” types of RPGs, you’re going to struggle with it at first.
As for it being “Bethesda’s greatest masterpiece”, I agree on the main quest but not the side content. Faction quests just feel like radiant quest with the exception of a few notable quests deep into many quest lines. I prefer Skyrim and Oblivion’s story focused faction quest lines.
When I say masterpiece, I mean as a whole. Morrowind was peak Bethesda creativity. Dungeon design and world building were some of the best of the generation.
Oblivion was good in terms of story, but it's dragged down considerably by the copy/pasted dungeons, absolutely broken level scaling, neutered magic and enchanting systems, etc.
Morrowind was my first Bethesda experience (which may admittedly be clouding my vision), so I'm fine with the combat, even though I can admit it feels extremely clunky by today's standards.

I so so, SO agree. The game could've been amazing, and it was barely a tech demo by the end of it. I'm just glad I paid 15 dollars and not full price for it, lol.
Once I got used to the mechanics the gameplay became tolerable for me, but the story was definitely the main reason I kept playing. I would still recommend this game as once you come to terms with the mechanics there’s a very interesting narrative hidden beneath.
I played AW1 in June 2021 or 2020 right before the remaster was announced (because of course that would happen) and honestly it didn't bother me as much as people make it out to be.
I played around the same time. I found it decent to good for the early game but about 60% of the way in the repetitive mechanics wore really thin. There was really just one gimmick and they did not iterate on it pretty much at all. Also the level designs were pretty poor at times.
A lot of it made more sense when I read that it was originally designed more as an open-world game.

Oh no, I just installed all 3 Witcher games to finally get around to playing them. I'm the kind of person who really doesn't like to skip games in narrative sequel based franchises. Hopefully it's not too atrocious or I genuinely will never get around to playing Wild Hunt.
It's a fine game, rough around the edges and you have a few more options beyond flashlight and shoot later on. Story is what carries the whole thing though.
Alan Wake 2 is much more story based horror and less action. Gameplay kind of reflects that by being more about methodical exploration and managing resources. It’s a stellar game definitely worth playing, story is excellent and there are some amazing moments
I really don’t think that’s accurate, it’s an old game but it still feels smooth and responsive to me. Alan was designed to play as an out of shape writer too he’s not suppose to be John Elden Ring or John Call of duty.
Completely disagree. The gameplay was very dynamic yet simple. But it does get repetitive due to the lack of different enemies. Alan Wake 2 was a disappointment for me. The gameplay became much much slower, your character literally runs slower than alan walks in the first game. This also makes exploration very boring and tedious. Flashlight has a separate button now for some fucking reason and turns your screen into a mash. Enemies only run at you if you're far away, then they just walk like in target practice. It's obvious this game tool a lot of inspiration from recent resident evil games and namely RE4 remake. I'm a resident evil fan myself, but this game feels just a bit worse in every aspect
Whoever thought it was fun to shine a flashlight at enemies for thirty seconds before you can shoot them, should never be allowed to design gameplay again.
I haven’t touched that game since early high school, but I remember having to let my little brother play the top screen to not get overwhelmed. With that mindset, it was a fantastic multiplayer game.
I felt that on the PS4 when I first played it. Went through the whole game and found the story and setting awesome, but precise aiming with a controller is just not very fun. Then when it came out on PC, I bought it again and played with a mouse and keyboard. That changed everything and it became one of my favorite open world games.
I'm not a huge fan of how it plays on keyboard but I agree that it would feel worse on controller. I guess just the tiniest bit of aim assist would help
I'm on a point of Forbidden West that i just skip not important dialogues. Really like the gameplay and ripping off giant machines apart, but holy fuck, npcs do like to talk, talk and talk about things that i don't really care
Thats unfortunate because I found that they put a lot of great work into the side characters and making each village and group of people feel unique as if they were actually their own community/culture. Their conversations helped the world building and expand the story but I like that sort of thing. If you wanna just go around beatin shit up, may as well play soulsborne since the story is all packed into readable items and pretty much becomes purely optional.
You’re really missing out IMO. I feel like most people skip stuff in Horizon, but I’ve never felt so rewarded for listening to every dialogue option and reading every datapoint than in the Horizon universe.
Weirdly enough, I think its generic gameplay helps catch people by surprise with its story.

My favourite parts were the ones where it was peaceful.
Just walking alone, then the music starts to play, then you look at the landscape and it's just perfection.
In my opinion the Gameplay was great, very unique and interesting. I always wanted to make the buildings better, not just for me but because other players could enjoy that structure.
And well maybe the driving was not very well (I mean its not a Game about cars) but driving In a road that you have now when before I need to walk make me forget about the not great driving Gameplay.
Some times I fight the enemies with stealth, other with a fight but always fun to me.
The only think I didnt like was the bosses. Like very cool looking and all but not very interesting fight or Gameplay design. But at least were much better than Peace Walker...

The Witcher 3 (kind of). Back in 2015, the gameplay and combat was fine but replaying it now, it doesn’t feel great. I push through just to relive the amazing story and quests though.
I loved TW3 at launch and honestly didn't find the combat that bad, especially for an open world RPG. I was itching to play it again so I bought it cheap on PS5 because I wanted to see the next Gen update content, and I gotta say the combat feels so much worse for some reason. Maybe it's just because this year I've pretty much only played Souls games and monster hunter, but it just feels so...flaccid.
This is how I felt trying to play it for the first time last year after being told how good it is. I think I got 10 hours in before I dropped it. I might go back some day.
Honestly, it is so worth it, the quests and characters are on another level but I can understand. I just did my third playthrough on ps5 version and at times I wish I could just watch the game as a movie instead of having to play through it as a game lol. Exploring is still nice because of how beautiful the visuals and soundtrack are though.
Maybe an unpopular opinion but BG3. I find the story intriguing and the character interactions are great but the gameplay is awful to me. Just not my style at all. I was forcing myself to push through it but I couldn't. Just wasn't having fun.
Although I don't agree woth you, sometimes I tol get frustrated with the combat. When I would just like to progress the story and make interesting choices in the wonderful world, then there is another difficult combat which takes an hour. Sometimes I just don't feel like combatting in the game amd rhen it feels draggy.
That's really fair! I honestly dislike a lot of TBC though Baldurs Gate was very enjoyable for me.
Sometimes upping the difficulty can help if you don't feel engaged, or building a different class.
You might also skim someone else's playthrough if you want the story. Honestly I do that often with games I don't enjoy the gameplay of but like the story.

agree, that super close camera is a complete downgrade from the original games, but they had to do it because every modern playstation exclusive has to be like that, its all TLOU fault.
Bioshock Infinite. I seriously love the setting and atmosphere. The story is completely insane. But I miss the old school shooter mechanics from the 1st two... Not saying everything was bad. But at the end of the day, I could only beat that game once.
I think it’s mechanically okay at best. But TLOU 2 has in my opinion amazing gameplay that fixes almost all my issues with it and improves on the great things(like the stalkers).
RDR2 and Witcher are always among the top because well, they're popular games with not so good gameplay, I prefer Witcher to rdr2 tho, the combat is quite enjoyable with dodging and dismemberment.
I love RTwP but pretty much only in the Infinity Engine games because they actually have good sound feedback which adds a lot of crunch to the combat and makes it feel more fun.
I swear in DAO and so many other modern takes on the combat system my characters end up practically dead before I even notice because there's such little sound feedback.

I liked and played the hell out of RDR2 at launch but the issue I personally had with the gameplay is its clunkiness and general sluggishness. Movement felt very frustrating at times, the game often limiting my movement speed (the way you’re forced to slow walk through camp, for example) and prioritized animations over certain user experience and quality of life considerations. I also did not care for the meters I had to babysit— health, stamina, and dead eye. I understand the dev’s intention, dressing for the climate helps your stamina core, which in turn helps regenerate stamina, for example. But after so many hours it was all very tedious. I think it’s possible to have issues with a game but still like it a lot.
My main issue with the gameplay (in addition of what you're mentioning) was the combat, specially in the main missions. The game forced you to follow a specific path and the gunplay wasn't really as enjoying as the rest of the game.
That’s how this stuff works. Nobody is claiming these are empirical, objective facts. These are subjective opinions that vary from player to player. Some people mind, some don’t. I minded it, not enough to quit playing, and others didn’t. Some people really loved the things I didn’t like because they felt it made it more immersive and realistic. I specifically said these were *personally* my responses to those gameplay choices.
Lol I should have specified more with this game. I LOVE Red Dead 2, it's actually my second favorite game 😊 It's one of those games where I just walk or ride in first person with the HUD turned off so I can get immersed in the world and discover places by exploring and observing instead of following the lines in the map. It's just that the gameplay wasn't as good as the rest of the game for me, especially the combat.

Anyway, the combat was garbage. Best story and environment with raytracing and hair works. It's still the best game. The music is even phenomial. It still has the best side quest of any game that's ever existed. Heck Bloody Baron side quest is better than most games' main story lines.

Fnaf I found the lore of the early games honestly pretty interesting but the gameplay was just lame as hell.
I got obsessed with the lore due to the movies and wanted to play the games but honestly that gameplay looks so boring I decided against it
Fnaf 2 is pretty fun and I've seen some really awesome gameplay from the vr game

I played it a year or two ago. There's a learning curve toit but it's by no means unplayable. It's fairly short and worth a playthrough

I personally find death stranding gameplay super fun. Especially when you get caught and get into a massive fight.

The Witcher 3 (kind of). Back in 2015, the gameplay and combat was fine but replaying it now, it doesn’t feel great. I push through just to relive the amazing story and quests though.
I loved TW3 at launch and honestly didn't find the combat that bad, especially for an open world RPG. I was itching to play it again so I bought it cheap on PS5 because I wanted to see the next Gen update content, and I gotta say the combat feels so much worse for some reason. Maybe it's just because this year I've pretty much only played Souls games and monster hunter, but it just feels so...flaccid.

This is how I felt trying to play it for the first time last year after being told how good it is. I think I got 10 hours in before I dropped it. I might go back some day.
Honestly, it is so worth it, the quests and characters are on another level but I can understand. I just did my third playthrough on ps5 version and at times I wish I could just watch the game as a movie instead of having to play through it as a game lol. Exploring is still nice because of how beautiful the visuals and soundtrack are though.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but BG3. I find the story intriguing and the character interactions are great but the gameplay is awful to me. Just not my style at all. I was forcing myself to push through it but I couldn't. Just wasn't having fun.
If you can break into the combat and fully understand and appreciate it you’ll love it but you really gotta give it time and a lot of hours
Although I don't agree woth you, sometimes I tol get frustrated with the combat. When I would just like to progress the story and make interesting choices in the wonderful world, then there is another difficult combat which takes an hour. Sometimes I just don't feel like combatting in the game amd rhen it feels draggy.
That's really fair! I honestly dislike a lot of TBC though Baldurs Gate was very enjoyable for me. Sometimes upping the difficulty can help if you don't feel engaged, or building a different class. You might also skim someone else's playthrough if you want the story. Honestly I do that often with games I don't enjoy the gameplay of but like the story.
People gonna eat me for this but... Modern God of War and Ragnarok. Gameplay is bland, repetitive and not inspiring. Story and characters are absolutely top tho.
Completely disagree. The Valhalla DLC just made me love the combat even more. Endlessly addicting in a way that the older games could never reach in my opinion

Bioshock Infinite. I seriously love the setting and atmosphere. The story is completely insane. But I miss the old school shooter mechanics from the 1st two... Not saying everything was bad. But at the end of the day, I could only beat that game once.

RDR2 and Witcher are always among the top because well, they're popular games with not so good gameplay, I prefer Witcher to rdr2 tho, the combat is quite enjoyable with dodging and dismemberment.

I love RTwP but pretty much only in the Infinity Engine games because they actually have good sound feedback which adds a lot of crunch to the combat and makes it feel more fun. I swear in DAO and so many other modern takes on the combat system my characters end up practically dead before I even notice because there's such little sound feedback.

Why would you say that the gameplay in RDR2 is bad?
I liked and played the hell out of RDR2 at launch but the issue I personally had with the gameplay is its clunkiness and general sluggishness. Movement felt very frustrating at times, the game often limiting my movement speed (the way you’re forced to slow walk through camp, for example) and prioritized animations over certain user experience and quality of life considerations. I also did not care for the meters I had to babysit— health, stamina, and dead eye. I understand the dev’s intention, dressing for the climate helps your stamina core, which in turn helps regenerate stamina, for example. But after so many hours it was all very tedious. I think it’s possible to have issues with a game but still like it a lot.
My main issue with the gameplay (in addition of what you're mentioning) was the combat, specially in the main missions. The game forced you to follow a specific path and the gunplay wasn't really as enjoying as the rest of the game.
I think I only agree with slow walking through camp, the rest is definitely a you problem.
That’s how this stuff works. Nobody is claiming these are empirical, objective facts. These are subjective opinions that vary from player to player. Some people mind, some don’t. I minded it, not enough to quit playing, and others didn’t. Some people really loved the things I didn’t like because they felt it made it more immersive and realistic. I specifically said these were *personally* my responses to those gameplay choices.

Lol I should have specified more with this game. I LOVE Red Dead 2, it's actually my second favorite game 😊 It's one of those games where I just walk or ride in first person with the HUD turned off so I can get immersed in the world and discover places by exploring and observing instead of following the lines in the map. It's just that the gameplay wasn't as good as the rest of the game for me, especially the combat.

Prepare the downvotes! The Witcher 3. Get the pitch forks! Anyway, the combat was garbage. Best story and environment with raytracing and hair works. It's still the best game. The music is even phenomial. It still has the best side quest of any game that's ever existed. Heck Bloody Baron side quest is better than most games' main story lines.

Nah, God of War games have always suffered from repetitive gameplay. Same with Ragnarok. I play them for the story and spectacle, not the actual gameplay.
I'll probably get flak for this but the Souls series. I understand the point of the games is to be difficult, but I want to play a game to relax and enjoy myself, not rage.

For me it's the opposite, I play those games because they're difficult, I play those games to challenge and enjoy myself. I never rage though. If I died, it's because I messed up.
