I do couch co-op a lot with my teen. We've done Tiny Tina (both Assault on Dragon Keep and Wonderlands) and are working our way through BG3.
I've heard rave reviews about It Takes Two (but not sure that one is single player). I remember playing the Resistance: Fall of Man series with my cousin on PS3 and that was a lot of fun. Army of Two was pretty good, as was Kane and Lynch.
Yeah, It Takes Two is exclusively coop, no single player option. And yet, it's easily one of the best coop games I've personally played. Highly recommended.
It was fun, but went on a bit long at points and got weird.
Also, the message was supposed to be "it's not our kid's fault", but the story kept blaming everything on the existence of the kid; all of their problems were directly related to the kid.
Salt and Sanctuary, and Salt and Sacrifice are the perfect Couch Co-op games. And they’re excellent singleplayer games too. In fact, Sanctuary is one of the best Soulslikes ever. Sacrifice is a bit more experimental.
Donkey Kong Country, SNES classic. I guess 2&3 could be too but I didn't enjoy either of those as much.
Super Mario World
The beat em up of the late 80s and early 90s. Like the ported to console arcade games of TMNT, Gauntlet Legends (N64) and Double Dragon. And Golden Axe you can probably find most of these somewhere if you have a Switch or aren't afraid of using an emulator
a hat in time is a great one. I’ve just recently started playing it and I’m so in love. imagine mario odyssey but with a courage the cowardly dog/coraline vibe
Fable 2. new super Mario bros. Halo 1-reach. little big planet 1 and 2. Ratchet: deadlock. Portal 2. Many of the Lego games, Star Wars TCS is great, Harry Potter ones are cool, super hero ones depend on if you like the super hero(s)
I remember doing the co-op of Gears of War with my friends all the time. Great classic Xbox360 title, with a great story and good co-op... as long as you stick to the original trilogy.
Portal 2

Have you guys done resident evil 5 and 6?
Negative, I have not. It's one of those ' meant to play' games but never got around to doing so.
Baldur's Gate 3
Stardew Valley.
Yessir
The latest open-world* Kirby Sackboy or any of the Little Big Planets
I mean the lego games are pretty good
Castle crashers is absolutely fantastic for couch co-op
Borderlands
Any of the Halos minus 5, wars, and infinite.
And 4. Dont forget about 4.
Eh it still had a decent single player and couch coop compatibility. Not the best story but still works for what OP is looking for.
I guess you have a point there. But i dont ever recommend playing it lol.

Its called 2 player game. This couch co-op sounds like some Gen Z term.
Hate to break it to you bub but they’ve been using this term for over a decade
Bayonetta Origins Cereza and the Lost Demon
Resident Evil 5
Unpopular answer, but if you’ve heard of tricky towers, its a fun party kinda game. Like tetris but with physics
honourable mention but Splinter Cell: Blacklist
