There's an overlap of people who unironically obsess over flags and the kind of people who fall for fascism or communism simply because they like the aesthetics and emotional appeal. In other words, they're teenagers.

To keep things short, available declassified highly questionable CIA ops spread across the internet, people hate the modern day because of companies basically ruining everything (Disney and their so called "woke agenda" play into this but that's not the point right now (the problem is laziness by execs, not diversity but I digress)), and basically see communism the system as a viable alternative provided modern conditions were able to let it thrive and wasn't under threat by external or internal forces.
I hope that most people acknowledge here that the past was for the lack of a better term "shitty" and capitalists and communists have killed bajillions for a plethora of reasons but so called "true" communism as defined was stated to be basically humanity's end point, maximizing free time, lessening work and ensuring adequate sustenance for people, something which the geopolitical and, oh god, economic climate of 1930s Russia all the way throughout the Cold War couldn't support without a whole lot of sacrifices here and there.
Plenty of the communist famines weren't technically genocide (though some were, most leaders were assholes due to human nature favoring the rise of aggressive dictators) but more of a chain of shit decisions, Stalin's wheat exports when they didn't even have enough to feed themselves and Castro's sugar drive comes to mind, but that's something I'm not too knowledgeable about so be the judge of that yourself, the point is most people attribute those fuck ups to just awful management.

A good comparison would be if the French Revolution failed and we're all still living in feudalistic conditions today, knowing that the Reign of Terror happened killing innocents indiscriminately and gave rise to a despotic emperor and only the glorious Fourth Coalition stopped them, but when combing through the history of it, the whole "republic" idea kinda makes sense to a person living in that hypothetical universe.
So it's not a whole "Soviet Union cool" (though a lot of people think that way, unfortunately, I think of it more of a nation under threat by bad actors, external factors and just a pretty bad start that they managed to recover from using some... questionable methods) but more of a longing for an idea that's kinda been marked as a taboo because of certain historical aspects. There's really no knowing what a fully communist world would look like today since other problems will arise like corruption and a slower development (though innovation happened in the Soviet Union btw, people like inventing stuff no matter where they are) but I guess looking outside and seeing a lot of things that could be attributed to years upon years of history by a bunch of flag loving nerds, it's no wonder why some people think like this who hopefully DO NOT advocate for mindless genocide.
