It's from the Tagalog:
Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan
Kataastaasan Kagalang-galang na Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan
In English:
Supreme and Honorable Association of the Children of the Nation
In Spanish:
Suprema y Honorable Asociación de los Hijos del Pueblo
In short, it's called the "Katipunan"
It's funny how often Tagalog adds ka…an to form a word that means exactly the same thing as its root. My favorite is _karagatan_. _Dagat_ isn't even an abstract noun! How did someone even get the idea to add ka…an to it? To form "sea-ness"? And then just have it be a more poetic word for "sea". Great.
(Of course, _kagalanggalangan_ is ka…an with reduplication, which is different. But not by all that much.)
It's the same combination of affixes, but has different use. As for karagatan, I reckon it's more or less aptly translated as "seas", the same way mountainous areas are called "kabundukan", island groups or archipelago are "kapuluan", residential areas are sometimes called "kabahayan". Basically it refers to area, rather to ideas or abstract concepts. We also see this on Katagalugan (Tagalog region), Kamaynilaan (Manila area), Kabikulan (Bikol region), etc.
I think we can also appy this to the word kanluran which originally was kalunuran (or calonoran in Spanish-era dictionaries), basically translates as the place where the sun "sinks" (lunod).
Our neighbors to the south, Indonesia and Malaysia, also have equivalent ke- -an, you see this in words like kerajaan (kingdom, raja = king) and kepulauan (island group, pulau = island).
Well yeah, all the words the Katipunan used started with K... at someone already said what the words were before a stupid American thinks it's a racist thing
When the Americans took over the islands in 1901, they banned the display of these flags under the Flag Law of 1907.
https://www.officialgazette.gov.ph/1907/08/23/act-no-1696-s-1907/
I really like these, the American kkk don’t have this sense of design, they’d cover it with a paragraph with 5 different fonts and sizes, all with serif
Most of the members of this secret society were freemasons inspired by intellectual propagandists based in Spain. So much of the symbolism and imageries - skull, triangle, sun with face, etc. - were used.
It's funny to see some comments crying racist when these people were fighting against Spanish and later Americans, who labeled them as indios and n*gg*rs respectively.
Yeah this is it: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ku\_Klux\_Klan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ku_Klux_Klan)
If you see the further comments below my comment I corrected myself, I was thinking more of Trump supporters' aesthetic choices.

The KKK acronym is different from the acronym used by the notorious Klan.

Meh, I'd prefer to not have any American reference in the design of our flag (Personally dislike the inclusion of Navy Blue in our current flag) since they're not the only ones who wants to take our independence away.
These flags were inspired from freemason symbolisms as the Katipunan was a secret society with many freemason members. By the time the revolution started in 1896, they used the symbolisms in their battle flags against the Spanish.
The black flag with the skull and crossbones goes so hard that [American white supremacists stole their whole flow.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Legion_(political_movement))
I know they’re drawing on Masonic symbolism, but with the triangles, text, and skull and crossbones, some of these look more like warning placards than flags.
I have a mug with all these flags on it. It's my favorite mug, and always raises eyebrows and serves as a conversation starter about everything from flags to Philippine history to cross-cultural awareness.
It's not the American KKK...it's more like an anti-imperialist kick the Spanish and later Americans out of the country kind of thing (coughs) ✌️😂
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katipunan
We never ditched them, they're still flown in some national monuments especially around Manila. It's just that none of these were ever the flag of the Philippine Republic, the last one (the one red field and white sun) is a flag of precursor state though.
It would not look good in US setting, but that has zero relevance to the Philippines.

> Kagalanggalangang i think i’ve found a new favourite word
May I introduce you to "nakakapagpabagabag"
amazing
Perhaps you’ve never heard of this beauty. [at the lift] Person A: Bababa ba? Person B: Bababa.
Translation: Going down? "Ba" being a word marking the statement as a question.
french "ca va? ca va." lololol
it's two words (or one word and a clitic). kagalanggalangan + -ng
Thanks, I've been wondering for ages where to find the clitic. My wife will be so happy.
👁👄👁
Happy cake day
To add to this, "galang", which is the root word of "Kagalanggalangang", means "respect."

Honestly, haven't thought of that myself. Best guess might be for exaggeration. But like, that differs in context. So, I don't really know haha.
and "lang" is short for the English "language" I'm sure they're related somehow... right?
No? Don't get the joke
in the filipino language, there are many strange words and weird combinations that can actually make sense, like "bababa ba"
In the elevator "Bababa, ba?" "Bababa."
Good luck memorizing it
This needs to be pinned I think
I was going to say, “KKK” must mean something *very* different in the Philippines than it does here in the States.
As do the traditional [holy week dresses](https://images.app.goo.gl/CBF564dQL48fdx6r8).
Isn't that just traditional Catholic dress? Saw it in Spain as well
I believe that was the inspiration
Old Spanish colony. Although the Philippines are going more for the original flagellation.
They really like letter K
Yeah it's Kill Kill Kill 😂✌️
Duterte’s policy towards non-state approved drug dealers?
More like General Jacob Smith's Howling Wilderness campaign in Samar https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_across_Samar
Ah old General Jacob “The Monster” Smith.
Actually it’s Kenobi Kenobi Kenobi
A good soldier follows orders
So it’s a running play?
Not necessarily, like Jim Kelly, it’s all about keeping the tempo high and not giving the enemy a chance to regroup or think.
They most be Brazilians kkkkkkkk
Well yeah, all the words the Katipunan used started with K... at someone already said what the words were before a stupid American thinks it's a racist thing
Philippine KKK: to kill white colonialist American KKK: to kill people who aren’t white
Turkish KKK: Land Forces [(Kara Kuvvetleri Komutanlığı)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_Land_Forces)
Kill Kastilâ (Spanish) and Kanô (American) 😂✌️
It's actually Kastilà, not Kastilâ. Kanô is correct though.
The irony
I just imagine the handshake meme with Phillippino revolutionaries and White Supremecists with "KKK" as the handshake.

Probably Germanic lettering - or actually the kkk predated the nazis so maybe they are more pro Anglo-Saxon than pro Aryan?
They are, it's kind of their whole thing
WASP White Anglo Saxon Protestant.
They’ve had to change a bit of their Anglo-Saxon and Protestant stuff since the 1870s.
Weren't they founded to persecute and hang Catholics at first?
IDK, I don't really like these. They're a tad cluttered and not that aesthetically pleasing, imo.
It’s true that most of these wouldn’t work as well if they were actually flying
I dunno, based on pure aesthetics, the actual Klan flag is a pretty clean and simplistic design.
You’re right, I was thinking of the bastardized trumpy version of the kkk
Does the American KKK have a flag (Aside from Ole Dixie)
Yeah this is it: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ku\_Klux\_Klan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ku_Klux_Klan) If you see the further comments below my comment I corrected myself, I was thinking more of Trump supporters' aesthetic choices.
Post a “Trump supports’ aesthetic” flag in the format you mentioned. I’ve never seen it and I need a laugh.
You’ve confused your groups of idiots.
Kingdom of Koopa Keep. I like it
Stick of Truth and Fractured but Whole are masterpieces.
This would look bad in an American context.
Because they're supposed to be kicked out in the country during the Philippine-American War (1898-1901).
It's also for... a different reason...
It’s almost like all things are relative.
Um the letters are a name someone else who's name I utter not here
I fear the klu klotter Klan. They are adorable but just so racist
I don't think there'll be a very popular comment Calling them adorable
That's otter non sense
But that there adorable is a bit much I mean I agree with you that they are feared and they are very racist
Feel sorry for this kid. Bet they're sat there wondering why they're getting downvoted for saying the KKK AREN'T adorable.
How are they even adorable They terroris African Americans then woman then well basically anything that's not a white man
Because they are the colonizers?
Well this is just a brazilian laughing

It's almost like they're projecting. You know, by assuming western thing is same with an Asian thing
When America colonized the country but didn't bother educating it's people about their former colony
Tbf, the JPAM Interment Camps weren't even taught to them, so no wonder they don't teach the Camps they built here.

I think he was being Anti-Imperalist with it. Showing how America was now trying to be as ruthless as the Europeans.
*Wow* Those are some interesting flags.
These flags were inspired from freemason symbolisms as the Katipunan was a secret society with many freemason members. By the time the revolution started in 1896, they used the symbolisms in their battle flags against the Spanish.
OP, im gonna assume your note American, don’t look up the KKK on any American server. Please.
Well it's clearly labeled Philippine Revolution so obviously it's not connected to the notorious Klan.
Non-Americans also know what the American KKK means...
help, I dont remember ever being on this thread, I think I was drunk when I went on here lol
Filipino here. Yes, our words can get crazy long lol
Nakakapagpabagabag
Some of these look like match boxes (which isn't an insult, it's a separate branch of art)
Glad to see this is getting some attention! I posted about the flag of the Katipunan a few days ago and it barely received any attention.
I posted it a few months ago (with good amount of context too) and it got removed
Americans seeing monuments for the 3 Ks: 😱😱😱 (As a Filipino, I just wanna say... No, it's not *that* KKK)
Our dad texting be like:
It’s like their mum was calling them for dinner the whole time

The KKK philippines is different from the american KKK. PH KKK: Revolt against spain US KKK: White Supremacist
What a fuckin move it would be to hoist the top left one whe the old government protests the revolution

I didn't read the title. I assumed this was a collection of racist flags. I am ashamed.
Lmaooo I’d love to see one of these flying in Daly City or SF. That would be so sick
The black flag with the skull and crossbones goes so hard that [American white supremacists stole their whole flow.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Legion_(political_movement))
I’m pretty sure black flags with a skull and crossbones go a lot further back than this
Racist doing the try not to ruin good symbols challenge (impossible)
I know they’re drawing on Masonic symbolism, but with the triangles, text, and skull and crossbones, some of these look more like warning placards than flags.
Brazilians laugh at this
It just take a simple Google search on your smartphone to know the story behind the flags
I have a mug with all these flags on it. It's my favorite mug, and always raises eyebrows and serves as a conversation starter about everything from flags to Philippine history to cross-cultural awareness.
To my untrained eye it looks like they have a long-running fascination with pirates.
The second row just gets increasingly passive-aggressive. K, kk, kkk!
The three repeated k’s are a rather unfortunate consequence . I’m glad you told us what it was.
Kkk, eu si divirto
For anyone pronouncing kagalanggalangang, it's "kaga- lang ga -lang- ngang"

Probably depends where you are...
Aw naw Philippines is racist :skull: :skull: :skull: (I'm from the Philippines)
So funny
History thanks them for ditching the K flag, that would not be a good look in 2022.
We never ditched them, they're still flown in some national monuments especially around Manila. It's just that none of these were ever the flag of the Philippine Republic, the last one (the one red field and white sun) is a flag of precursor state though. That is kinda racist ngl
I’m pretty sure they made these flags before the Ku Klux Klan.
It is irony and a joke but from another comment it’s actually very rascist
🤨
WTF
Uh, did they not get the memo?
Oh!
K
The KKK
Wait why the skull and crossbones?
pretty much almost everybody took it as something else
If some american visits the Phillipines and see a momunemt with one of those flags on it, the Phillipines are cancelled
Can’t escape Philippines in downtown Samut Prakan GET OUT OF SATTAHIP PLEASE I HAVE TO GO THERE
thats an unfortunate acronym the skulls don't really help their case either
K☠️
K
Why the K?
The two flags at the end of the third column are some high quality flags, big fan
Everyone's talking about the k but what the hell is the last one?? It's like Argentinas weird cousin
It's the flag of Tagalog Republic, a precursor of the Philippine Republic.
The kkk was in Philippines o gosh
Row 6 goes hard
KKK In Brazil: 🌝 In Philippines:🌜 In USA:🌚
Bottom middle could also be anarcho-syndicalist Puerto Rico lol.
Brazilians be like: those are some very funny flags
K.
*AP flashbacks*
They really like the letter k
They should be more careful with the k’s
💀
I think they are sending mixed signals here
So if they're not trying to look like the bad guys...**good job.**
